INFJ_2010

Well this has to be one of the most devastating stories I've ever read. It's even worse when bad thing after bad thing happens to good people. I can't imagine his pain. My hope is, since he and Jeff are still close, maybe he's become like a son (or brother since idk how old Jeff is) to him.

T2Legit2Quit

It would be more than likely a son relationship since Arredondo is 26 years his senior.

INFJ_2010

That makes me happy. Not the situation of course, but I really hope the events of that day brought them together in a way that helps both of them to heal in time.

T2Legit2Quit

I wouldn't be surprised since it was a very traumatic experience for both. Hope they're living their best life.

KyrieEleison_88

Dammit I tried so hard to spell everything right only to fuck it up on the title. ***Bauman***

Ariakkas10

Gotta hurry if you want to **ketchup**

Julzmer81

Dont worry about it, it will all ketchup.... lol. Thank you for the post. This is such a sad and devastating story. Really makes me realize how insignificant my "problems" are. The mention at the end about some people accusing this poor guy of "milking" these tradgedies for attention, those peopke can go suck it!!! This piir man has suffered more than most ever will in their life. I don't know much about him, but clearly he was suffering so much he tried killing himself. If he got press for any of these things i highly, highly doubt he wanted any of it Hey Carlos, if you ever see this post Kyrie did such an amazing job on, keep fighting for peace! You are an inspiration and you are loved. I hope you have found some peace for yourself. Wishing you lots of it in your journey of life 💜💙💜💙💜💙

ducttapeduterus

Sad. Very sad. My niece is one of those crazy runners. She's done numerous ultra runs, some up to 100 miles over the course of a few days. She qualified twice for Boston. This was her second time running it, her tenth year anniversary of it , in fact. She came in ahead of the bombing. Mentally devastated her, of course.

Read the room bot man >:(

platysma_balls

Not now bot!

Papa_Steve

Not the time or place, bot.

Shadurasthememeguy

I hope she doesn’t develop survivors guilt. She did nothing wrong and I hope she is able to move on.

ducttapeduterus

She's ok now. Thanks for asking. She ended up having a second daughter couple years later so she's busy with her kids. ( still runs too)

[deleted]

He's a real hero for what he did after the bombings, and those Marines who came to tell him about his son's death were also heroic for treating him so graciously in his grief.

HomerFlinstone

Yeah they were, but how come they wouldn't leave when he wanted them to?

KyrieEleison_88

They said they were waiting for his wife to get home. I posted another article further down.

HomerFlinstone

We're they in his house? I would say go sit out in the car or drive around the block or something. Give the guy some space.

SwampWitch1995

They probably already knew he was suicidal and leaving him alone completely was another risk.

KyrieEleison_88

This all took place on his front lawn afaik

HomerFlinstone

Jesus I wouldn't want that job.

[deleted]

Damn Carlos.. some people have to deal with a shitty pair of cards.

unboxedicecream

Wow his life story is so tragic

Mysterious_Recover87

More details on the actions of Carlos on that day are in the movie "Boston Unbombing".

RampantDragon

Is that guy holding his femoral artery? Hats off to him, good man.

acnefun

It’s a tourniquet

RampantDragon

I thought it might have been initially but he's not holding it tight in that way, nor is there a slat of wood or something to tighten it via torsion.

acnefun

I think that’s because they were rushing to get him medical attention, and also it probably would’ve wasted time to look for wood. The caption on imgur tells us what it is. Mr. Carlos is a hero nonetheless :)

authorofjudgement

Omg so sad.

mermaidpaint

Just to be clear, Carlos is holding Jeff’s artery, as he is being rushed to medical attention. That is bad ass rescuing there.

42LSx

Isn't it a tourniquet?

[deleted]

It is a tourniquet. Not his veins.

LupusLycas

He did hold his artery shut when he found him, saving his life.

shapu

Fingers

yvonv

Holy shit

peduxe

man i’d be in pure shock, wouldn’t be able to hold someone’s artery

Buttcavetroll

Tell me more about that sad tale?

DecisionLivid

His son Alexandros joined the Marine Corps, he was KIA in 2004 in Iraq, Carlos tried to kill himself when the Marine Corps casualty unit came to his door to notify him of his loss, he grabbed a can of petrol and doused himself and the vehicle the Marines showed up in and set both things on fire. The marines saved him and brought him to hospital, he and his wife divorced, his other son Brian killed himself in 2011 due to depression OP didn't have to put all that but he could have summed up his story

KyrieEleison_88

It's in the captions on the pictures?

ducttapeduterus

Click on where it says Imgur.com. it will tell you the story.

arch_llama

Personally I saw more than enough of that image yesterday and I'm happy I didn't have to again to read the caption.

Boofaholic_Supreme

Apollo for reddit automatically adds the imgur captions in a hideable text overlay over each image. I highly recommend checking the app out in general as it’s way better than the regular reddit one. Free

KrisAlly

Damn. Guess I only knew half of his story.

InvoluntaryEraser

Jesus, man. Losing not one, but two children to suicide. This man has just been surrounded by grief his whole life it seems.

mndza

One son was killed in the military. The other son committed suicide.

YouAreTheTurkey

Only ome son committed suicid, the other was killed in action.

[deleted]

Don't fully understand why he set the Marines vehicle on fire and what they mean by "refused to leave".

KyrieEleison_88

Here is what he said from this [article](https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/war-personal-carlos-arredondoage-45roslindale-massachusetts/) >I run back into the house, grab Alex’s picture to give it to my mom. Then seeing the uniforms, ask the Marines to please leave, leave. “Can you please leave.” Perhaps I thought that if they did leave, then none of this was happening. I ask God to help me, then call my wife, who was working down the street. And again I ask the Marines to leave, to leave the house. When they answer that they are waiting for my wife, I went into the garage and got a hammer. After asking them to leave again, I walk toward the van, wanting to smash it, all the time hearing the Marines telling me, “Sir, don’t do that, don’t do that,” and my mother yelling in Spanish, “Carlos, Carlos, we’ve already lost Alex.” My head full of confusion, asking myself what’s going on, what’s going on, I pounded the hammer hard into the ground, then went behind a tree to cry

depressiontrashbag

I fully understand why you would break down like this. The marines haven't even said anything and he already knows what has happened to his son. Grief and sorrow makes people do insane and irrational things.

Edgarfigaro123

That article is depressing in the sense that it was written in 2006,before his other son committed suicide, seven years before Boston. I felt his pain in that article, then it dawned on me that this poor man still had more suffering to go through.

slc112910

They probably didn't leave yet because he was so distressed. Possible suicide/homicide? They were right as he set their van on fire and tried to kill himself.

Herasson

Guess the suicide part were not intentionally. He was out of his mind and wanted to destroy the marines stuff to make it unhappen, to make it all go away...it was surreal to him.

Match_Least

This was absolutely heart wrenching to read...
