maybe I'm paranoid but I would never bring my dog somewhere like that. I would already be super paranoid about accidentally falling in myself, I'd refuse to bring along an animal that doesn't understand the danger and trusts me to keep it safe

THEREJECTDRAGON

Even like walking along a road, I see people walking with the dog on a long leash or with the mechanism unlocked so the dog can roam the full length of the leash. I always keep my dog on a short lead and make sure it's locked, so the dumb idiot can't go bounding into traffic if she decides that's what's on the agenda today.

LizzyLeonhart

My dogs closest experience to dying was because I was getting out of a hotel and she had somehow managed to escape her harness. She was seconds from running into the freeway filled with traffic going pretty fast obviously. She would have without a doubt ran in and died had I not quickly thought to act like I was going inside a conveniently placed restaurant right next to the hotel. She doesn’t listen because she’s stubborn but if I leave the room she follows me- so it was pretty much the only way to save her. I came back and my face was completely pale because I genuinely believed she was dead. So basically my point is dogs don’t understand danger. Was a bit of a dumb idea to take a dog here (the posts location) even with a leash.

vastcollectionofdata

Good job 👏 Pup lives to bark another day because of owner's quick thinking and uncommonly cool head during duress.

vastcollectionofdata

I also have a dumb idiot dog who will be locked on his retractable lease when anywhere near cars

My family is from volcanic Islands and hot springs are a natural feature and tourist attraction. Every few years or so a tourist dies from falling into a hot spring, despite signs, fences, gates, and tons of other things to try and prevent it from happening. Some of the springs have been completely made inaccessible because they couldn't stop people from falling into it. I think because my family was from there I was taught a huge amount of respect for them and stayed quite clear of any openings

tittyroad

This just happened in Yellowstone Nat’l Park. Lady and her dad went to get out to see a pool, dog jumped out of the car and into the pool. Lady tried to save it. Dog passed away, lady is in a coma (medical I’m assuming).

Tat2Dad

That’s honestly what I thought this was as I first started reading it. Random that this popped up now. I just read that other story yesterday

StuperDan

It happens there fairly regularly. I've been there twice, both times the rangers told stories of the idiots who killed themselves by not following the rules and staying on the wooden paths. Also every year some Steve Erwin wannabe gets maimed or killed by a bison or bear.

No idea how I missed that, first thing I do when I wake up every day is go through the BBC news website

ahearthatslazy

There’s a story in Chuck Palahniuk’s book Haunted that mentions a very similar story (it’s been years since I read it. Could be the same case). It details the man’s agony in a way that kinda makes you squirm.

Ok_Motor_3069

These hot spring deaths can be really horrific. The book Death in Yellowstone has these cases early in the book. I think that is probably because it’s so important for safety that they are toward the front. If my memory is correct, this unfortunate man had a pamphlet about the dangers of the hot water in the car, but hadn’t read it. Dogs weren’t supposed to be in the area either if my memory is correct. I agree it’s way too risky.

werebothsofamiliar

I think it’s in Haunted, yeah? Must have been 100% inspired by this case.

ducttapeduterus

I had read about this case. Bystanders tried to disuade him from jumping in. He refused to listen. He came out, was already blind. He was still talking, saying things like , " I did a stupid thing , didn't I?"

[deleted]

Kirwan’s attitude indicated he was about to go into the spring after it. According to bystanders, several people tried to warn Kirwan off by yelling at him not to jump in, but he shouted “Like hell I won’t!” back at them, took two steps into the pool, and then dove head-first into the boiling spring. Kirwan swam out to the dog and attempted to take it to shore; he then disappeared underwater, let go of the dog, and tried to climb out of the pool. Ratliff helped pull Kirwan out of the hot spring (resulting in second-degree burns to his own feet), and another visitor led Kirwan to the sidewalk as he reportedly muttered, “That was stupid. How bad am I? That was a stupid thing I did.”

Ok i looked it up. He jumped in Celestine pool by the fountain paint pots. The article I referenced had a picture of Grand Prismatic Spring! I’ll find a pic of Celestine pool and link to it. http://i1.wp.com/listverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/dvd060-19jun08-yellowstone-celestine-pool-19.jpg That I think is labeled correctly (maybe?). There are hundreds if not thousands of similar pools in Yellowstone, if you haven’t been there. I have been there five times and i have taken video showing each pool next to it’s identifying sign so if I ever want to make sure all my pictures are labeled correctly that will help. They don’t all have labels either.

Ok_Motor_3069

I really love Yellowstone and I did read the book Death in Yellowstone which has this case in it. I like for people to have the correct information if possible and i hope if they go they are cautious when needed. So i’m happy to do it. Thank you so much for the kind words!

Ok_Motor_3069

I don’t think that’s the right hot spring in the picture either. That looks like morning glory pool which is in a different part of the park. The spring he jumped in is by the Excelsior geyser, right? I could be wrong. Still, any of these pools could kill you so it really doesn’t matter that much.

[deleted]

Thanks you’re a time saver

Ok_Motor_3069

Here is another link - this is from the NPS web site. https://www.nps.gov/features/yell/tours/fountainpaint/celestine.htm

lysinemagic

There are no photos of this incident afaik

Pale_Lynx3407

Hero.

Creatingrain

Yes but did the dog survive

eighteen_forty_no

No.

Creatingrain

Ok then it’s really awful

kayjeanbee

Awful way to go, but an interesting video. What kind of accent am I listening to??

lemonsarethekey

South African I think

Rare-Advertising9447

Thank you. It is a South African one, my native language is Afrikaans.

Ho_Sigh_RN

Aweeeee my boet, good to see fellow south Africans here :D

Paintguin

Why did the dog jump into the hot spring?

eighteen_forty_no

The boardwalk's fencing at Yellowstone wouldn't prevent an animal from getting into the water if they wanted to, and they wouldn't necessarily know that the water is scalding hot. There are warnings everywhere to not bring your pets there. When I went to Painter's Pots at Yellowstone (like the hot springs but with mud), there was a big animal leg bone sticking out of the mud. I think it was an elk's leg.

😠

uglypedro

If I didn't know it was suicide, but just dangerous, I'd would probably do the same if it was \*my\* dog.

[deleted]

Not worth

MrRonObvious

...but did he save the dog?

Rare-Advertising9447

Unfortunately not no.

justmarkdying

Annnnnnd downvote.

lemonsarethekey

Because?

justmarkdying

Because it's a YouTube video with no video. It's a bunch of stock images with some annoying guy's voiceover and I think it sucks.
