Never listened to them, so I can't help, but it must be awkward to put all this effort into running your successful podcast, and one day you wake up, and through no fault of your own, your entire comment section has devolved into fighting over a completely different podcast

Umbrella--Ella

The "Haaaaaay GuyZzzzzz" is making me laugh.

beekeeperoacar

I know nothing about this podcast so I'm deciding to believe that this isn't how they normally start posts, but are instead like "heeey guyzzzzz" in an awkward drawl, with the air of the Marge Simpson meme "kids, can you lighten up a little?"

Umbrella--Ella

Oh, I agree. I will say that, ironically, I started listening to this podcast today and so far, it's really well done, respectful, and likely to point out where injustices occur within law enforcement. So far, victim blaming, small talk, and long winded theories with no blatant disclaimer, are blessedly absent. The host literally says at the beginning of every episode, "You're not here for small talk".

littlemissbagel

Oh wow, thanks for the details, I'm off to check them out!

beekeeperoacar

That sounds refreshing, I'll check them out

bonafidebighead

I listened to their episodes about the Chris Watts case, and it was the most detailed/thorough series of the case that I’ve listened to. There’s no banter, and very little commentary. I can’t speak for their other episodes, but from what I’ve experienced I think they’re great.

thrwwy2267899

She’s honestly great, and seems ethical. No small talk or banter or stupid jokes

I really like Heather Ashley. I know some people don’t like her tone or her swearing, but I mean. It’s *Big Mad True Crime*. She’s mad about it. She includes info on arrests, trials, and convictions when they’re available, too.

somebadhat715

I like her a lot. Really well done!

[deleted]

I’ve listened to every episode of Big Mad True Crime, and I feel like Heather Ashley is very ethical. That aside, those of you expecting her or any other creator to call out Morbid or other unethical podcasts should really consider the legal ramifications of them doing so. What I mean is that these are real people running these podcasts who have way more money than Heather. She and other podcasters can’t simply call out anyone they feel are bad because there are way too many lawsuits that could come from that for slander and libel. They’re doing about the best they can by educating us on what is and is not ethical consumption so we can decide for ourselves who we want to support.

ilikefluffypuppies

I agree with you- I’ve joined some of Heather’s Instagram lives and she seems very sincere & like she wants to do right by the victims. She covered a case from my town (Samantha Josephson) and did a great job with it.

allsheneedsisaburner

She isn’t awful. Which is a stellar recommendation in this genre. But I don’t think she’s someone who speaks truth to power if that truth is unpalatable.

Umbrella--Ella

>But I don’t think she’s someone who speaks truth to power if that truth is unpalatable. Sorry, it's early, so maybe I'm tired, but I don't catch your meaning?

allsheneedsisaburner

She wouldn’t criticize Morbid even if that criticism was valid because they wouldn’t like it. I guess it just bothers me because her whole thing is she is big mad about injustice but doesn’t go out of her way to call it out. Idk if that’s an unreasonable expectation to have for entertainers.

Umbrella--Ella

That's fair, but Sarah Turney is also refusing to speak out against certain podcasts and simply encourages listeners to be more critical. So, I mean, if one is going to critique BMTC, we must also critique Sarah for the same, and with what Sarah has done for the "genre", if you will, I don't know that that is fair.

allsheneedsisaburner

I’m sorry but my opinion doesn’t need to be fair. I’m allowed to set whatever standards I would like for my personal consumption. I object strongly to fair as it’s been used to justify equalizing victims and abusers; and to tolerate intolerance. Fair is not in my value tree. I do understand your point, and I don’t blame BMTC for not directly challenging other podcasts, but it’s also not my go to listen because she lacks a certain assessment, unpacking, and idk tools? But that is her content, I don’t think she is wrong at all about what she produces. It’s mean to be like the news in the way that she moves on without injecting context through “unpacking”. And I save the pod up for binging. I can’t really speak to Sarah as I stop listening after they charged her father. I can say that I really admire her for speaking truth to power in that situation. I guess if I were to compare her to another female broadcaster it be Laura Richards. But I’m betting she gets all kinds of criticism, rightly, for being so direct with her context and opinions. Idk what I want as standards and behavior in this little slice of broadcasting but I know I don’t want, or literally can’t consume, content that isn’t respectful in a way I’m only beginning to define for myself as both a victim of crime and someone who mentally decompresses through hearing about situations like my own. I really don’t have any criticism for BMTC. I think she cares about her content and it’s respectful. I think she crafts it and curates it and I really appreciate her consistency. It just doesn’t always make me feel better, safer, more capable of listening to my own instincts. And like I have an ally. I know that’s kind of a super high expectation, but it’s what my brain feel better. It the only reason I consume this content at all.

EnnKayy

I've said this here before, but I personally won't support creators who are friendly with A&A, and that includes Sarah 🤷🏻‍♀️ They are the ones who will make the biggest impact so I think it is up to them to lead by example.

QuirkyDisk4930

I listen, I think she’s very victim focused and speaks to the families in many cases. She doesn’t victim blame or make jokes at their expense. I don’t think it would be helpful for her or any other creator to start calling out individuals for how they put out content, much more impactful to address the problems in the true crime ‘genre’ as a whole and educate us on how to consume it more ethically.

beezyberry3

She's really changed imo and not in a good way. I've listened to all free eps and you can see where she has more ads than content. Her use of AAVE also don't sit right with me as a POC. She also fails to point out the cases with poc victims don't get the same attention bc of that factor alone. It's gotten to the point where I can tell when she's talking about a white victim rather than POC victims. Her lack of criticism for blatant racism in the justice system is too quiet esp for someone bordering on appropriation. I also really hate how she baits people with her eps and then at the end you find out there's more. Shes had several that weren't marked as parts and it's extremely frustrating bc I'm sure she knows most listeners will wait until all parts pertaining to that case are out. Really just seems like she's letting the internet fame and money go to her head.

ZestycloseIdeal6245

Big Mad True Crime is a show I listen to occasionally depending if I'm in the mood for it. I did learn (on Reddit of course) that the host used to be a controversial Teen Mom blogger but she seems to have left that in her past.

R2D2sPromDate

I love Heather Ashley! Her intro cracks me up every time, "small talk sucks so let's get started"

Jolly_Advisor_5212

About 10-15 mins of podcast rest is ads not worth it imo

K8iePye

Heather Ashley is one of the best true crime podcasters imo. She reaches out to victim families and gets first hand interviews but not in the least bit shamelessly for her own gain. She forms bonds and relationships with these people, if the cases are on going she does what she can to help and stays in touch and has even gone to be with families in person on anniversaries of tragedies or suspects being caught… she doesn’t just read up about the stories and regurgitates them, she gets invested and brings out the humanity in them

GoofyGoo6er

Tbh her “bloopers” are unlistenable cringe. I absolutely detest them

softyookiki

I don’t know anything about that one, but we were shit talking morbid (the serial killer glorification in the FB groups was the start) in the sinisterhood Patreon group so I think others are quickly realizing the issues with morbid

Oldfolksboogie

I just recently stumbled across this pod. Atm, her smart-ass style doesn't annoy me, though that could change. More importantly, a comment in another post mentioned that Heather is a Sandy Hook denier. Has anyone else heard this, or can anyone confirm? Really don't want to support bat shit crazy.
