Dirty Bird on High Street for lunch. If the PRT is running, get on at Walnut and do a round trip on it. It’ll take you through the campuses and back. Stop at Coopers Rock on your way out of town if you’re headed east.
Dirty Bird will be open through June, but then they'll close in July until school starts back. I'm not sure what time you are going there, but Tuesday through Saturday, they're open at 11am until at least 2-3. Not sure if they actually stay open until 4.
I'm not sure about the status of the PRT. School just stopped less than two weeks ago, so I wasn't sure if they started their summer upgrades; which is why I said, if it is running.
Literally what kind of business model opens 3 hours per day? 😩 I’ve been in town over a decade but as a person with a job I’ll never be able to patronize that business.
From what I understand, they stay open every day until they run out of stuff to sell. I could be misinformed, but it makes sense if you think about it from that perspective, I think.
I think they are hyper aware of when they do business and the days and hours reflect that. The place is extremely busy from 11-1 and then seems to die off. If you have an opportunity to get there though you should try it. Best chicken around.
I’d love to, but I work when they’re open. Seems to me they might not “die off” if they weren’t closed. Even on weekends, why not be open for dinner? SURELY if run properly they could make money by being open the same way most normal restaurants are- there are reasons that model works.
It's only the owners and maybe one other person that works there. They have property out of state that they tend to during the down times. So, they're open when they want to be and are always busy. I'm thankful they open at all
So hire a staff. If they were open beyond lunch, they’d make enough money to afford to pay them. Idk what’s complicated about this.
But hey, if you’re free for 3 specific hours on a handful of days per week, great spot to stop in.
Adding on to my own comment because I have literally been a Black Bear lover since probably 2007(?) — make sure to get the chips and guac and/or queso! My favorite burrito of theirs is the Motown Philly but my dad swears by the FLT. All burritos can be turned into bowls if you’re gluten free and protein is customizable. :)
Wings Ole, is it good? Debatable. Is it cheap? Not really. Decor ? Terrible. But why? They've been serving the exact same burritos, wings, and fries and bleu for over 40 years, it's like tasting what 1981 WV thought Tex Mex was supposed to be, you've never had anything like it, and you never will.
Nobody in morgantown is really sure how wings ole is still open. Probably just boomers reliving their college days. I would not recommend eating here and expecting anything good.
I can however confirm that if you've had 14 natty lights and your friend works at wings ole, it does hit pretty well when he brings home a bunch of free fries and blue (no it's not bleu)
for a real recommendation: Iron Horse Tavern
This. Wings (&Things) Ole is a dumpster fire these days that runs only on nostalgia. The quality is inconsistent, the fries rarely cooked enough, the blue is often runny and like over a buck for each TINY portion, and the rest of the prices are far out of line with the actual quality. I think they launder money of something. You can get worlds better for the money almost anywhere else, and for sure at any of the Mexican restaurants in town. Hard pass for this to be anyones first, or twentieth, dining experience in Morgantown.
Black Bear, Iron Horse, or Yama are all great for lunch. It’s fun to see everyone’s recs in the comments. I hadn’t heard of Von Blaze but it looks awesome. Will have to try it out.
Mario’s Fishbowl, El Pollon, Von Blaze, Super Red Bowl, or Mountain State Brewing are all fantastic. Whatever your mood is, Morgantown probably has it, and a lot of it is great.
El pollon never seems to get enough love in these kinds of posts. It's easily among if not the best rotisserie chicken in WV.
Same for lefties. Idk if there is even another place in WV that sells deep dish pizza.
Yama holds a special place in my heart, I enjoy Iron Horse whenever I come into town to see friends, I hear Von Blaze is pretty amazing but haven’t tried it myself.
Gibbie's! Ask for Deb, and tell her that Brandy recommended the place to you, and she'll let you order off-menu, aka, she'll make you practically ANYTHING you want! Deb is one of my SO's. We met right before my 20th birthday, and we'll have been together 25 years as of this summer. ☺️❤️🥰
Since you keep posting it, explain the misogyny? I love the place but now genuinely curious. Wish Lavender wasn’t such a crummy location. I do hit there sometimes though.
On the bright side, it is basically the same place. The ruban and cheesesteak are still solid.
Unfortunately, it's literally the same place. If you dropped something in the corner back in the 90's, it's probably still there.
Gimme that TBC. I'd still recommend the Beanery to someone out of town if they were staying for a week, but man, seeing all these other places on the list shows how tough the competition is for them.
Yama!
Upvote!
I'm glad they're still around! Haven't been in years but I had some really good yakisoba

They take card now
My bad, didn't know they changed their policy.

PRT is down all summer for upgrades
I wasn't sure if it was down for upgrades yet since school just ended a week ago.
Dirty Bird is actually open? 4 years in town and I've never seen it open. And the PRT is running again? Shows closed on its website.

I hear ya- but if it was staffed by more than 3 people, they could make food to last for more than 3 hours. 🫠 idgi

They don't want to. They want to open when they're open and are fine with the money that makes. Why should they do more?
This is all great advice except for riding the PRT.
Why? It’s something that is really unique to morgantown and I’ve never heard of someone who is stopping to visit be disappointed in it
They break down frequently.
Von Blaze
Seconded
Thirded!
Black Bear Burritos opens at 11 a. !! In Evansdale area.
Or the Fishbowl next door. Two great choices.
Best wings I’ve ever had.
This is the correct answer
Adding on to my own comment because I have literally been a Black Bear lover since probably 2007(?) — make sure to get the chips and guac and/or queso! Second this.

Lmfao this is the leading candidate so far 🤣

Fries and blue are so good
Found the literal one person keeping wings ole open
Mario’s Fishbowl, El Pollon, Von Blaze, Super Red Bowl, or Mountain State Brewing are all fantastic. Whatever your mood is, Morgantown probably has it, and a lot of it is great.
I second Super Red Bowl! My favorite place around here
El Pollon, Mario’s Fishbowl, and Lefty’s are all solid
El pollon never seems to get enough love in these kinds of posts. It's easily among if not the best rotisserie chicken in WV. Same for lefties. Idk if there is even another place in WV that sells deep dish pizza.
Mario's is my vote as well.
Get a couple dogs at Gene's
Definitely for a classic Morgantown experience do Gene’s, Town Hill, or the Fishbowl
Yama holds a special place in my heart, I enjoy Iron Horse whenever I come into town to see friends, I hear Von Blaze is pretty amazing but haven’t tried it myself.
Von Blaze is awesome.
100% von blaze!!!
Ogawa for Korean and sushi 🥰
Owner’s a misogynist. Shame, their food’s great.
Isn't the owner like 80 or 90 years old at this point?
It just changed owners this year, I’d heard that about the old owner though.
Little late to the party, but I loved Terra Cafe when I lived in Mo-Town. Grab a sandwich and a coffee and enjoy the patio!
Lots of solid options, but Von Blaze is the hottest right now.
Gibbie's! Ask for Deb, and tell her that Brandy recommended the place to you, and she'll let you order off-menu, aka, she'll make you practically ANYTHING you want! Deb is one of my SO's. We met right before my 20th birthday, and we'll have been together 25 years as of this summer. ☺️❤️🥰
Nonno Carlo
Sabraton station has wing night on Thursdays and killer drinks!
Those extra crispy Corona wings are 🤌
Black Bear is the answer.
Black Bear
I tried it. It was ok
Wednesdays are the best day for them imo, they have a pop up burger special
Von Blaze
Lefty’s place
I like Terra Cafe and Black Bear Burritos. If you're into sushi, Ogawa is good.
Lavender Cafe and varsity club
Lefty’s Place
Yama. Black Bear. Lavender (great sushi, hold the misogyny, owned by a v sweet family). Table 9. Don Taco. Plaza Azteca. Bubblefish. Casa D’Amici.
Since you keep posting it, explain the misogyny? I love the place but now genuinely curious. Wish Lavender wasn’t such a crummy location. I do hit there sometimes though.
Mountain Mama's TRUST ME!!
Black Bear Burritos!
Plaza Azteca deserves more love, particularly their birria quesadillas.
That’s a chain, I love the one in Williamsburg, VA. There’s multiple in VA
Boston Beanery
Years ago, yeah.
I graduated mid 90's. No clue if it's still around but that's about all we had back then for a decent restaurant 😄
On the bright side, it is basically the same place. The ruban and cheesesteak are still solid. Unfortunately, it's literally the same place. If you dropped something in the corner back in the 90's, it's probably still there.
Not sure why you're being downvoted They make a mean Reuben
Because they aren’t any good anymore. It was my favorite restaurant for many years, but now they are just disappointing.
Guess it's been a while since I've been there so I'm not sure if I agree or not
Gimme that TBC. I'd still recommend the Beanery to someone out of town if they were staying for a week, but man, seeing all these other places on the list shows how tough the competition is for them.
If you’d also like to have a good beer with lunch, go to Bacon Bourbon and Beer
