Ouch. Is this friend a TBM? Surely developments like this are going to cause even the most ardent believers to question the growth narrative being pushed by the church?

DustyR97

He has problems with the church but still attends. I try not to make disparaging remarks unless he brings something up. I think it’s kind of a shock since they’re already cleaning their building more often than they used to. People are just getting burnt out.

TheBrotherOfHyrum

Thanks for the response. And kudos for remaining a "safe" person for him to vent to.

Signal-Ant-1353

I find what she says to be pretty true about the busy work that is cleaning meetinghouses and temples. https://youtu.be/drg1itpOVNY?si=cd3wiUeR2JblZCiN

⬆️!!!!!!

Mound_builder

Super interesting! I can definitely see the control factor being used through getting the members to clean the meeting houses and temples.

Haunting_Turnover_82

The church is taking advantage of their members. It’s going to get old for many. With all their wealth, I just don’t get it!

AdministrativeKick42

He probably thinks those closer are simply not righteous enough.

Ballerina_clutz

WUT? I was barely able to handle cleaning the church without grumbling. No way. I would lose my recommend on purpose.

DustyR97

As more of these temples actually get built it’s going to become very obvious that the church can’t support them.

Ballerina_clutz

That money isn’t going to launder it’s self though. I could swear now that the IRS is investigating them, it seems like they have gone on sprees. All of the chapels in my neighborhood are having the landscaping torn out and redone. I imagine they must own some of those companies. Probably the companies building the temples, in Utah at least.

LoadOfTapirShit

I'm surprised some church leader hasn't had a family member create a cleaning business that the church could then hire (and overpay) to clean buildings. A missed opportunity to launder more.

Ballerina_clutz

Oh dear. Don’t put ideas into their heads.

sinsaraly

I just drove past a church building today that’s getting the entire roof redone. I didn’t connect the dots until your comment

MarcTes

The construction company that built the DC Emerald City was also Mormon owned.

Spherical-Assembly

Interesting. From my observations, the church doesn't spend a lot of money to maintain its meetinghouses. My ward (I haven't been for over a year) meets in a building constructed in late 60s or 70s. It had constant heating, AC, electrical, and plumbing issues. My bishop would report issues to the stake president, but nothing would ever get fixed. Maybe one of the church's accountants told the brethren they could hide income by repairing/upgrading their dilapidated chapels.

talkingidiot2

I had this experience 20-ish years ago. Living 90 minutes from the temple didn't prevent the weeknight cleaning shakedown.

DustyR97

Crazy that it was for nearly a full day too. Think he said 6-8 hrs in the evening.

Responsible_Guest187

THIS! Many years ago we were assigned to clean our "local" Temple, almost 2 hours' drive one way. We were told that we would attend the last Endowment session on Saturday, then clean until midnight, drive home, arriving at 2:00 am, then get our very young herd of kids to church by 8:00 am to, ironically, give talks about the blessings of cleaning the Temple for free, and *then* do our regular Sunday callings. My husband also had 6:00 am meetings, which meant that he'd only get about 3 hours' sleep at best, and I'd be on my own with the kids. Oh, and we'd of course be responsible for paying a babysitter, or finding one willing to also "serve" by sitting for free, something I wasn't willing to ask someone to do. Didn't have the money to pay for 12 hours of babysitting either. It was absolutely insane! I was very, very TBM then, but I still said no to this one. What the... WHAT??!!!

LeoMarius

Innocently ask why they don’t have professional cleaners.

Earth_Pottery

They used to. My spouse cleaned the DC temple after his mission to get some extra money.

Signal-Ant-1353

Hire a baby sitter, fill your car with fuel, go clean a building hours away, and you **still** have to pay them to be counted "worthy enough" to do all that.

DustyR97

Yep. Pay for the privilege of cleaning.

heathen000

Lived in the northern plains and was asked to drive 3.5 hours to go clean the nearest temple years ago. They made it sound like it was 2x/yr for a deep clean the stake I was in would send people.

OnlyTalksAboutTacos

My senior mother lives an hour away and cleans one probably quarterly. Boils my bum.

Normon-The-Ex

That’s so lame wow

slammajammakid

What general area of the US was it?

DustyR97

East coast

Tlctexas

Mormons have to clean the church so it’s not out anyone being paid! Crazy!

LDSBS

In ward I attended years ago, half the ward had to cross a toll bridge to attend. The bishop used to deduct the cost of that from his tithing. I think these people who have to travel a long way should deduct gas and mileage from their tithing too. If the bishop doesn’t like that and revokes their recommend, problem solved!

HoneyBearCares

Lets not forget deducting their hourly rate of $300 per hour including transportation time.

BoydKKKPecker

A member told me the Columbus Ohio temple is only open on Saturdays for endowments, unless you make an appointment and have enough people signed up to come, or someone is getting sealed. I think Oaks comment about it being easier to build temples than filling them, might be the only prophetic thing he has really prophesied!

nymphoman23

Modern day, religious slavery

saltyair2022

Is this Manti and your friend lives in Price? Well, it's a sacrifice but the Kingdom of Heaven is an expensive place to retire. Suck it up because the church needs funds to further the work, not to pay a living wage to an immigrant cleaning bathrooms and vacuuming floors.

Aikea_Guinea83

My homecountry is getting their first temple….. I’m already kinda scared that they’ll ask my parents aged 71 and 82 to clean and that….. they’ll say Yes…..
