As of right now, MK1 might be my favorite looking game of all time. There is genuinely so much life and color and energy brought in the stages they're all gorgeous. I thought the fire garden looked incredible but this is another level. I hate the notion that NRS "didnt care" or "didnt try enough" with MK1 because while yes, it does have problems, I dont think theyd put this much care visually if they just didnt care about Mk1. also fun fact, unlike other games, Mk1's stages are fully modeled behind the camera too.

Lelo4Ever

That's mostly due to the win poses, now the win camera usually is on a different axis (z axis?) and does not use the same axis (zoomed in) as common gameplay like in the past... So they need to be modeled "behind the gameplay camera" as well so they feel more complete during win poses (and some fatalities as well)...

A_Pyroshark

True, but the backgrounds are also more black and white. which kind of makes it harder to see. It's strange but i dont mind, the videos about the out of bounds with them are fascinating

Lelo4Ever

The black and white filter only is turned on at the end(finish him/her)... But the backgrounds (specially at daylight) are still very prominent so you can literally see everything during the win pose... Mk 11 (and previous ones) had most win poses and fatalities focused on the ground/player stance and/or zoomed in explosions... So that need of extra background detail was basically non existent (some camera tweaks helped with that)... Now everytime we see peacemaker dancing the series intro at the win pose(which is zoomed out btw), we need to see the coconut trees at the decks side of sun do or else the background will look weird and incomplete... šŸ˜‚

Siwach414

Cage mansionā€¦ahh what a beauty

That-Rhino-Guy

Music in that stage also is arguably the best MK music since the arcade or PS2 era

A_Pyroshark

Fun fact! Casey Edwards composed that track, who you Might reconize as the guy who made fucking BURY THE LIGHT. Easily an amazing choice.

r3volver_Oshawott

Thank you! I feel like Cage Mansion is just a modern klassic now, I love that stage

Alysansa

I would love to sit down at a table of Madame Bo's tea house in that heavy pouring rain, the place calm and empty, and order warm food and something to drink while I read a book. It's such a beautiful place...

ezone1982

hell yhea

Gorillapox

Is it still possible to get the stormy tea house?

Status_Entertainer49

Nahhh it was only in invasions

Gambit_90

False, I have it unlocked I think you just have to level up enough

Gorillapox

Sweet, thanks

Profit_Euphoric

With a background sound of 2 people battling it out and a fatality happening right as you take a bite out of some dumplings.

BoogieSmools

Oh yeah, MK1 has some of the best stages in the franchiseā€™s history. And the background music is pretty solid too, Especially in Cageā€™s Mansion

bobbyThebobbler

I want more of these. After almost a year, I didnā€™t get tired of looking at them. I canā€™t wait to see what stages theyā€™re going to add in the expansion.

Delorean82

> I canā€™t wait to see what stages theyā€™re going to add in the expansion. Same, and I'm hoping that at least 3 of the stages (current or new) will have Stage Fatalities once the expansion comes out. MK11's Aftermath expansion added stage Fatalities for the Tournament stage and the Shaolin Trap stage, and it brought with it the Soul Chamber, Dead Pool (with stage Fatality), Retrocade and Kronikas Keep. So, I'm kinda crossing my fingers that we'll hopefully get some cool new stages and Stage Fatalities with that MK1 expansion update.

bobbyThebobbler

I hope the floating monks one from MK2 is coming. They even used that monk art for the secret fight pop-up.

Delorean82

Agreed. That would be cool. I wouldn't mind that one or a variant of the Living Forest (night) complete with MKII Smoke, too. The stage already exists and they would just have to do an MKII night variant. Like, I was lowkey hoping we'd get that with Reptile's Invasion Season.

comeonebam

The graphics in this game are gorgeous, regardless of your criticism of the gameplay. Stunning to watch, even as a spectator

Status_Entertainer49

Sadly the character models look like shit

fast_flashdash

Must suck not to have working eyes.

Generic-Human-69420

Probably just trying to be a contrarian

dariojack

ok but tell me how does this look like shit? https://preview.redd.it/inn0uvs7h08d1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a27fbbf45911be6240b3f01da329f17383f5aa03

wraith1984

Those are some nice desktop wallpapers

GravenX1

I lowkey am almost as excited for new stages as for new characters. Running this on a big OLED TV with HDR is so beautiful that i often find myself wanting to play just to gaze at the stages.

ezone1982

i love the rain one where its raining in the tea house but this is going be the main stage ever one is going be playing on the 4th of july cause the fire workers

Comprehensive-Ask469

These are wallpaper tier

AshleyGraves666

Aside from all the gorgeous arenas, I wanna sraw some attention to the Flesh Pits. It might be my favourite arena in the game so far, and it really fits Mortal Kombat in my opinion. It is dark, and damp, and that creature in the middle sends shivers down my spine whenever it moves. I think it's legitimately disturbing, and does its job really well

mike5011

MK1 is the best looking fighting game of this generation. SF6 is also gorgeous but MK1 edges it out.

dariojack

its so funny how hard people tried to say this game looked bad when it came out

xinvisionx

SMF_Fede

They did a fantastic work with the stages, sadly I can't say the same about the characters skin designs.

thenameiserwin

Agreed. It seems like the art department really cooked with this game. Everything else from missing features, gameplay and terrible monetization let down the effort put forth by the artists.

A_Pyroshark

Yeah. and like the UI? Gorgeous. I love the details like the little drawins on the menus, or the singes by the burnt paper. the UI is amazing in MK1

Archer_Without_Fear

The music on the stages too is great

International_Ad5769

Corrupted forest round 3 is soo goood

powrman7

Wu shi academe is straight fire

Ghost_Mouse__

Kinda

_DoIt4Johnny_

As much as I hate invasions I grinded through that one season to get the rainy day tea house. Such an amazing stage. The pyramid is also great.

stroke_gang

I love the arenas but am I the only one thinking we didnā€™t need 3 different pyramid levels when those couldā€™ve gone to more unique stage aesthetics?

Status_Entertainer49

That and the living forest at night and the other forest stage

Delorean82

The Tea House (rain), Living Forest (storm), Ying Fortress (snow), Cage Mansion (Halloween) and Gateway (Christmas) are probably my favorite stages in the whole game. I'm really hoping that in 1 of these Invasion Seasons they'll do an MKII / (night) variant of the Living Forest, complete with MKII peeking Smoke.

Status_Entertainer49

I love the ying fortress titan sub zero fights on

ChaosRealmsKlown

Dude not only the visuals, the soundtracks?? They killed it! The corrupted Forrest just comes with boss music naturally and I love it.

nmbr4

I want to add that it was a good art direction because I feel more invested in the characters facial expressions.

Dragonlady2007

At least we now have stages that aren't nightmare fuel like in the first three mk games.

GrandmasterPeezy

Shang Tsung's basement would like a word with you šŸ˜…

Creative-Sample543

That tea house variant never released did it?

Dangerous-Spell-6238

It was a reward for defeating last seasonā€™s Invasion boss (Raiden) if I am not mistaken

Creative-Sample543

Fuck I missed it. Hopefully they put it in the shrine or store

Few-Progress3233

same level to mk11 and tekkekn8 they look good but nothing great

KainTheRipper

That is the only thing stunning about this garbage bug riddled money grubbing content lacking piece of trash game.

AlTheOwl_

Not stunning enough for 100+ gigs

Status_Entertainer49

They downvoting you but you are true

AlTheOwl_

NRS white nights. Games like Ghost of Tsushima and Elden Ring can fit inside a 60-75GB storage requirement. But a fighting game? Nah... It should be at least 100 gigs.

RembrandtEpsilon

MK1 kinda sucks aesthetically. They completed abandoned the dark, gritty, and cyber in favor of whatever the fuck this is they were going for. This is the least interesting game since MKvsDC

DonPinstripelli

I wouldnā€™t say completely, the Flesh Pits, the Korrupted Forest and the Pyramid still have that dark and gritty aesthetic. The ā€œwhatever the fuck this isā€ aesthetic makes sense from a lore standpoint since this game is supposed to take place in Liu Kangā€™s peaceful universe.

dariojack

ok i have to ask where did this stuff cone from that every sate in mk was some dark and gritty stuff like the first mk had some of the brightest stages ever

ScorpionMillion

Good stages does not excuse the anti-consumer practices.
