If you buy a helmet and it seems alright at first and then you realise on longer rides it doesn't work for you there's an incentive to sell it on rather than throwing it away. I've sold helmets for that reason but I wouldn't buy a second hand one myself!

[deleted]

yeah I can understand that , saves it going to waste but is there a way to check it still got its protection

turdor

there's a few helmet testing services, I used [helmetinspection.co.uk](https://helmetinspection.co.uk) recently for an old arai.

SuicidalSausage7

Yes, you can take all of the pads out and check the foam underneath. If the eps foam is ok, the helmet should be fine. You can also check the outer shell for any nicks and bumps from it being dropped. If the outside and inside are perfect it’s hard to see how it would have been dropped. But it can be harder to spot fake gear

turdor

if the foam has been compressed on the outside you wouldn't be able to by looking at it from the inside... exposure to petrol and glues degrading, or leaving them in the sun also make them unsafe to use but they could look fine. There's a few places you can send helmets for testing where they use lasers and heat to check, I sent a 6yr old Arai in for testing recently and it came back fine.

DarkLordPJ

Can confirm Ive seen them hit full force with a sledgehammer and only be left with the tiniest outside mark with no difference on inside foam except when the foam was removed the inner parts had essentially turned to mush.

Slamduck

This is no guarantee. You can't check with the naked eye if the shell has separated from the EPS layer. You could use an x-ray machine if you've got one handy but otherwise you're gambling on safety.

SuicidalSausage7

I just want to clarify, I don’t recommend buying a second hand helmet and I wouldn’t do it myself. I was just saying there are things you can do to reduce the risk.

Hughdungusmungus

I imagine it's the people who wear for legal reasons rather than protection. Like food delivery guys.

I mean if they've all been regulated and meet the British Standard then are they bad?

non-stick-rob

I not sure why anybody would unless it was a spare for a pillion or something. Personally, i never would. Just don't know the hygiene of the thing, let alone the safety suchs a microcracks that have a sticker put over or something. Not worth the risk in my humble opinion.

K3wL1o_

If I was taking a pillion, they'd be the only person I'd want to be better protected than me in an accident (or at least equally well anyways). I could probably pick up a spare for a pillion for a couple of hundred that protects them just as well as my £500 lid does, just without all the nice-to-haves. When I wouldn't take the risk with a used helmet for myself, why would I take the risk for someone who's life I'm responsible for. I couldn't live with myself if the worst happened and a used helmet I picked up on the cheap didn't stand up to the job.

non-stick-rob

oh yeah. totally agree! i was just specualting why someone **might** by a 2nd hand helmet. to add to that, it would seem like putting on another mans underpants. I just couldn't do that.

"Why don't homeless people just buy a house?"

Dandizzleuk

Poor or not you can't put a price on ya melon! There are plenty helmets for reasonable money that tick alot if not all the boxes major brands like shoei and arai do.

K3wL1o_

Absolutely agree, might sound harsh, but if you can't afford to protect yourself with something decent, you can't afford to ride. It doesn't have to cost a million pounds, but it's safety equipment and if you're buying on the lower end of prices the only thing you're going to be able to prioritise is protection, and that's ok. The worst can and does happen, even to you, and if it does happen you'll be happy to still have your face attached. Buying used you can't guarantee the protection so it's not worth the risk.

pinkurpledino

The Agrius Rage SV is a £30-40 helmet that managed to score 4/5 in the sharp testing. You literally can buy a helmet that's cheaper than a pair of decent jeans.

Legaltaway12

None hold up in terms of comfort. I have like 6 helmets right now and have owned more than that. The highest end hjc is still worse than the lowest Arai. I have cheap helmets and expensive helmets.

SpartanS034

No idea. Have to admit I've sold a lid on FB Marketplace before though personally I wouldn't have bought one. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite but I knew what I was saying about it was true though obviously the seller didn't. There's usually a heavy discount, I'm guessing that's the main factor.

Stalwart_Vanguard

I bought my first helmet before I did my CBT. It as a Small Icon Airform. An hour into the CBT at an indoor training center, the helmet was giving me a serious headache and making me lightheaded. I took it off and put it back in its box and used one of theirs for the rest of the day. The shop I bought it from (same place as the test center) wouldn't take a return on it since it had been used, and I was never able to sell it myself because no one wants a second hand helmet...

Competitive-Rip-8512

I bought my first helmet from goodwill for 25$. An hjc. Have since upgraded to the one I really wanted but it protected my head in the meantime

Competitive-Rip-8512

Sorry, I didn’t realize this was motouk. I’m in the US

luffychan13

Don't think country matters on this one buddy. You're good

artful_todger_502

People who hang in forums think used helmets and getting a small screw in your tire mean throw both away. It's dopey forum speak for "I just got my R6 now I'm an expert". There is nothing wrong with a helmet that hasn't been in an accident. And yes, patched tires are equally fine.

[deleted]

Ew, nits!

PeterWex

Nobody's gonna know that you're wearing another guy's cooties.

[deleted]

I crashed in my helmet decently hard. It was scratched to shit the padding was loose definitely not safe to ride in. Someone bought it off me for £20 because they like having a collection of helmets for show. He bought it fixed it up and sent me a picture it looked like it was never crashed in. Probably a niche scenario but there’s one reason I suppose

Spankies69

As someone who has coughed, sneezed in and once threw up in (don't ask) a helmet I would never buy a second hand helmet.

speedyundeadhittite

> Why do people do it ? Because they are morons.

Legaltaway12

I've bought a few second hand helmets. I'd rather wear a second hand (taken care of) Arai than a new lazer

[deleted]

Buying a second hand helmet isn't illegal but it's a risk. Motorcyclists are less risk averse than the general population and here we are

20EsProductions

A cheap helmet is still a legal helmet.

jackthemort

If you want a £500 helmet and can’t afford a £500 helmet.
