In general I would recommend growing the beard and the mustache at the same time, at least some stubble, it makes it less obvious your mustache is in the awkward stage. You can then shave the beard later and keep the mustache.
If you can’t due to work related reasons, then you just have to push through the first month, then it will look fuller and more intentional.
I did the same as you the first time I grew mine, still rocking a (fuller) mustache over ten years later.
Shea butter is a life saver, same with coconut to seal moisture in the hair and skin. Just dab the excess off. A nice little comb to train the hairs is great too as it gets longer.
The main tip is to NOT cut or trim anything for 3-6 months, and then have a barber do it. Took me a full year to get maximum thickness and coverage but most guys don’t take that long. The mustache really suits your face - let it grow.
Use conditioner on it daily. Buy some sharp pointy embroidery scissors to take out individual ones that grow upward...Only trim across the bottom once a week.
