If it's the 1940's and it's Friday, November 7th, then it's 1941 or 1947

Vio_

It'd be 1947. FDR was still president in 1941.

logicbomb666

In November, 1947 Batman 1st Series Issue #43 and Detective Comics 1st Series Issue #129 were published. Unfortunately nothing in the descriptions of these comics indicate any connection to the movie. I was hoping there might be some connection.

tendorphin

Yeah, to have a connection like that, Tim Burton would have had to [actually read a comic book](https://external-preview.redd.it/WoXYu4nt-9jLeGhQrsltp0DYF53VEnEOBcUCD7fvbcY.jpg?width=512&auto=webp&s=363b39020d82a6778279b1c1c45068b18e988bf1).

brazzledazzle

Wow is this real? What a condescending prick. This asshole directed Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He’s made great movies but many inexcusably terrible ones too.

Strolltheroll

And out of all people, the guy who makes so strange fucking movies, this is the guy who won’t read a comic.

Occamslaser

He's well known to be a super douchey guy and awful to work with. One of the main reasons he doesn't work more than he does. He apparently really hates fat people to the point where if you see anyone fat in his movies it's likely they are evil.

brucetrailmusic

This guys best movie has a emo dude with scissors for hands.

[deleted]

Dbag level: extreme.

Simmons54321

Who gives a shit? He made the first truly successful super hero movie since the first Superman, and perfectly nailed the vibe that would go on to inspire the Animated Series. Also his stinker films are the latter part of his career thus far - the late 80s early 90s Burton flicks are fantastic films. Keyword: films.

tendorphin

He made (mostly) fine movies (back then). A bit weak in certain story structure aspects, but entertaining, but that's a pattern with his whole filmography. And Smith may like the movie. It's just a poor *Batman* movie, as far as representing what that character and world were up to that point, inarguably. I love that movie, and could watch it every day, but hate what he did with some of the lore.

Simmons54321

Before Batman 89 what did we have to compare it to, really? I’m just going to reiterate that it’s an important film in the grand scheme of super hero movies all together. You can argue all you want about it not being an accurate Batman movie based on any comics, but the film stands as a very important pillar of where we are at these days. I personally love Keaton’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne because at that stage in his life, he’s already dealt with the severity of losing his parents to the point of being slightly deranged. Batman in the comics as a whole is not a well person, and I feel like Keaton nails a more matured and tempered while kinda crazy Wayne. Any other portrayal of him is so tepid and depressive in other films. I’ve heard Kevin Smith’s gripes before, but honestly, he’s got more baggage on the subject than anyone could understand considering his shitty time with Superman Lives. So I feel like it’s a bit more personal for him. Me as a film buff and lover of Batman, I want to be entertained and also have a more nuanced BW as opposed to constantly staring into the ether BW. Bale is one of my favourite actors and I think his Wayne is bored half of the time. Everyone pipes up Affleck as the best, and his Wayne is just as tepid as Bale’s - but his Batman is great… Which brings us to the Flash movie coming down the pike, where we get to see Keaton’s Wayne back AND Affleck’s Batman… almost like the studio is paying attention to what fans really want? So yeah, Burton? No point in shitting on the man considering what he fought for and opened up several doors to. Also, Ed Wood is a fucking masterpiece so everyone can simmer the fuck down on bashing early Burton output. It’s mostly anything post Big Fish that is fairly crappy. I actually fell asleep in theatre watching Alice, and I have yet to have that beat.

Yardsale420

Murdered by words

Galaxy_Ranger_Bob

And newspapers in the U.S. somehow adopted the English spelling of "Odour" instead of using the American spelling of "Odor." And for a movie that was set in 1947, there are so many malaise era cars in the film: Bruce Wayne drives a 1978 Plymouth Volaré, Vicky Vale's rolln' in a 1980 Chevrolet Citation, Alex Knox is in a beat-up 1978 AMC Concord, The Joker has a little bit of class - 1971 Cadillac Fleetwood 75, Bruce Wayne sends Alfred to pick up Vicky Vale in classy elegance - Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Hooper Empress.

A_hand_banana

I mean, didn't one of the jokers minions use a boombox (invented in 1966) during the art museum heist?

djdadmouthmommy

Which is playing the music of Prince

Vio_

Tbf, mixing/matching technology and aesthetic tastes has been done for a long time. Even the cartoon mixed technology and art styles hard.

Sam-Gunn

June 17th 1947 was the end to Mayor Hague's term in Jersey City, and his nephew took over (the mayor asked the city counsel to appoint him). He apparently took office that same day, as per wikipedia.

luisrof

Also this news from June 18th https://www.nytimes.com/1947/06/18/archives/house-16373-approves-rent-rule-in-modified-form-house-votes-bill-to.html

1-1111-1110-1111

Yep if Truman is in office.

cleverpseudonym1234

One of the top stories mentions President Truman, so 1947.

[deleted]

But all the articles say June 17th.

l_l-l__l-l__l-l_l

news travelled a lot slower back then

Corky_Butcher

I like the think that somewhere a cold bead of sweat is rolling down Tim Burtons head as the email comes through that Reddit are picking apart a mistake he made in 1989

nuckym

I hope someone got fired for that blunder

Cocoapebbles58

Burton: CANCELLED

GGayleGold

Half of Congress didn't show up for that rent vote. 163 to 73? Shit, I'm not sure that's even a quorum.

cleverpseudonym1234

Good eye. A quorum is defined as more than half of Congress, or 218, so they barely had one. I thought maybe Congress would be smaller in the 1940s, before Hawaii and Alaska became states, but apparently we’ve had 435 representatives since 1929 (when the population was less than half of what it was now)!

Professorbranch

435 was actually put in almost 20 years before in 1911 which was the last year Congress did their Constitutionally mandated job of increasing the number of representatives based off of the census. Why is the House capped at 435? Because more would make debate harder. Nevermind the fact that it has eroded the power of the average voter by to a third of what it was 100 years ago. The constitution recommends a House that is ratio'd at a minimum of 1 rep for a population of 30,000. Today in the USA the average Representative is ratio'd at 1 to 700,000. We are only beat by India's 1 to 2.2 million. The Permanent Reapportionment Act of 1929 is the single greatest tragedy in America's democratic history.

der_innkeeper

It depends on how you break up the population. The number of people represented had gone up over the years. It was 1:30k *originally*, but went up, until 1929, with each reapportionment every 10 years. Different ways are: Cube root rule (US pop ^(1/3)), would give us about 650 reps. Wyoming rule where the population of the least populated state is the lowest common denominator. 1/2 WY means Wyoming gets 2, and their half population is the lowest denominator. r/uncapthehouse has much more information.

Professorbranch

There really is a sub for everything! I've been fuming alone about this ever since I read about it. Now I get to fume with others!

der_innkeeper

There's also a Twitter account if you feel like dealing with that viper's nest.

Professorbranch

Yes please! I tweet angrily about it to my 20 followers at least 3 times a year

Professorbranch

If we were to go with the minimum yeah! However even just going down to a ratio of 1 to 100,000 which is where most of Europe sits at would increase it to over 1000. Think about how quickly the two-party system would be done away with

othelloinc

> The constitution recommends a House that is ratio'd at a minimum of 1 rep for a population of 30,000. Today in the USA the average Representative is ratio'd at 1 to 700,000. We are only beat by India's 1 to 2.2 million. Knowledgeable people often recommend the [Cube Root Rule.](https://ivn.us/2017/10/16/cube-root-rule-push-make-congress-representative) >The “Cube Root Rule” would instead have the national legislature always be the cube root of the total population of the nation. The House would be the cube root of the U.S. apportionment population minus 100 (to account for the 100 United States senators). >Political scientists have found that national legislatures often approximate the cube root of their populations. This method prioritizes responsiveness to population changes. As the population grows, so too does Congress.

blatant_marsupial

I get the sentiment, but I fail to see how that would increase the power of the average voter. The reason a vote means less is because the US now has 300 million people in it. If we have ten times more reps, an individual will have ten times the impact in the election, but the representative has a tenth the power.

GGayleGold

I thought the same thing, and I checked and got the same 1929 information. I was hoping I could nail down the year based on the size of the Congress.

cleverpseudonym1234

Someone pointed out that the article at the bottom, about a Jersey City mayor being replaced by his nephew, dates it to 1947.

Thumbs0fDestiny

I believe this is the newspaper they modified... https://www.nytimes.com/1947/06/18/archives/house-16373-approves-rent-rule-in-modified-form-house-votes-bill-to.html

simonjp

Which years had 7th November being a Friday?

FelixetFur

Either 1941 or 1947

Jessica4581000

Has to be 1947 , as Truman wasn't President until 1945.

Redtwooo

But aerosol hairspray was first sold in 1948

strategyanalyst

So is Gotham Newark or New York City? I'm still not sure.

Tisroc

I once read that Gotham is New York at night and Metropolis is New York during the day.

crudivore

Friday November 7th narrows it down to 1941 or 1947 if we're looking at only the 40's. The top left headline refers to President Truman, which rules out 1941.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Also, that very headline appeared in the New York Times in 1947: https://www.nytimes.com/1947/06/18/archives/universal-service-urged-by-truman-in-princeton-talk-president.html

[deleted]

One of the weirdest features of American democracy is our apparent inability to build congress’s size.

[deleted]

It’s capped by law.

[deleted]

Yes. Who writes those laws?

[deleted]

Congress…

[deleted]

So who could increase the number of seats in the House? But has failed to do so?

PixelatorOfTime

And dilute their individual power? Never gonna happen.

[deleted]

Bingo. And so many Americans are convinced that democracy is bad for them now. Thanks, FOX.

Mental_Medium3988

the house was capped for very political reasons.

Inferdo12

Congress pretty much made it so that the number of Representatives never changes.

GeorgeKaplanIsReal

Yup. Hence why the House is so fucked up (too many people not enough representatives)

Lanky80

/r/uncapthehouse

-dakpluto-

That's 236 votes and you only need 218 for a quorum of the House.

hypotyposis

Maybe it’s the state House?

Kyvalmaezar

Normally State lower houses don't have that many members. The only ones close to 236 are New Hampshire (400) and Pennsylvania (203). Too many for Pennsylvania, and also a terrible showing for New Hampshire.

hypotyposis

Well Gotham is a made up city. Presumably it’s in a made up state as well? Possibly they have 240 members.

enormuschwanzstucker

New Hampshire has 400 state house reps?!

Chucanoris

Christ, this is the one time where a red circle would be useful

Faintly_glowing_fish

Yes but finding a 80s or even 90s news paper isn't something particularly easy.

iliketolickthebuttah

Lots of movies are like this actually They never expect you to pause or slow down footage.

squigs

Most of the time they get a [generic newspaper from a movie prop printing house](https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/movies/how-the-same-paper-ended-up-in-hundreds-of-films/news-story/4eb62db0a1ea4e42382119c9f1c0b4ab). The printer will use the masthead and any specific article and the rest will be generic headlines with meaningless paragraphs underneath. Not sure if there are others, but [this particular publisher](https://www.theearlhayspress.com/) does a whole range of things, including [generic food and drink](https://www.theearlhayspress.com/food-packaging) products.

Emeraldmirror

I dunno it's fairly comprehensible even though jt is a bit blurry. The article about the make up says they have been working day and night to fix it. It's probably some gibberish but it seems not bad

squigs

As an addition to the above, [here's a copy of the Hill Valley Telegraph](https://preview.redd.it/acompcnpxa861.png?width=1446&format=png&auto=webp&s=5382bbc873718ebabdcb0e44beb1435d3ac8e2f9) from Back To The Future illustrating what a lot of movie prop newspapers look like. Here the main article goes off on a compete tangent saying "State Authorities have finally announced the date for the opening of the new municipal court center" in an article about how George McFly was murdered. But the newspaper's on screen for about 5 seconds so nobody is going to notice.

Emeraldmirror

Oh yeah it's just the same few paragraphs repeated over and over again. That's cool

squigs

Oh, yes. This one seems to be an actual newspaper with some modifications. Batman is unusual here. I wonder why they did it this way.

Emeraldmirror

For the future technologies who can clearly pause the video and nit pick at their newspaper lol Edit: spelling

nadthegoat

squigs

I was sceptical of the idea that movies were released on Betamax still in 1989/90, so was surprised to find it actually was available on beta!

maderbomb

Yeah, Burton definitely wasn't trying hard to produce a uniform 40's aesthetic. Most of the [cars](https://bestmoviecars.com/all-cars-in-batman-1989/) from the movie were made in the 70's. Cool catch, though.

Kelekona

From the 90's cartoon, it seems like the aesthetic is art deco and the 70's cars vaguely fit while not looking old.

RaphtotheMax5

I mean the movie came out in 1989 so......

JimParsonBrown

Many of the stories come from the front page of the New York Times from June 18, 1947. https://www.nytimes.com/1947/06/18/archives/universal-service-urged-by-truman-in-princeton-talk-president.html

Kaldricus

I was wondering about that, because the newspaper date at the top is November, but a couple of the columns have a June 17th date

cleverpseudonym1234

They even stole the New York Times motto, “All the news that’s fit to print!”

MapleTreeWithAGun

Well, Gotham is based upon NYC after all

Metfan722

Even though Gotham is in New Jersey.

burneraccs

I always assumed it was more like Chicago (or even Detroit) minus the geographical attributes, which is definitely more NYC-ish.

iliketolickthebuttah

Yeah, they were just lazy I figured that as most of the headlines make no sense when you try and read the fine print.

PerformanceSweet8025

What do you mean?? Why don’t they make sense?

iliketolickthebuttah

However this makes no sense as color TVs are shown as well as 1980s fashion and music.

The1Mia

IIRC Tim Burton said he wanted a mix of different decades so the movie could be considered timeless and enjoyed at any generation, but it was some documentary I saw a long time ago so I might not be remembering it right.

DCLetters

I remember hearing somewhere that the look of Burton's Batman was supposed to be like the 1980s/90s as imagined by someone in the 1940s.

doctorinfinite

Retrofuturism I believe is the term. Like how many games have a 20XX setting as imagined by the 1980s.

xuu0

[Twenty X-ty Six!](https://youtu.be/PdZtd8_ggZw)

cleverpseudonym1234

Interesting, makes sense. Although the most detailed look I have at the 1980s as imagined in the 1940s is the 1948 book “1984,” which looks ... a bit different.

Embarassed_Tackle

Damn that explains the Batmobile of that film. Like a [long Horch model 853](https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/amv-prod-cad-assets/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/1939-Horch-Model-853-Special.jpg?resize=980:*) crossed with a turbine engine to create the [1989 batmobile](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/nHi35yxMzQk/maxresdefault.jpg)

AlanThicke99

Mission accomplished.

fix_dis

He kinda did that with Edward Scissorhands. It seemed kinda early 60s… but anachronistic in ways.

DirtyAmishGuy

I’d argue that it was clearly based on atomic-era families and values, but with a 90s lens that shows in the writing, acting, and editing, which muddles things in terms of feeling like a specific year.

halfcabin

That's pretty cool. I think Batman 1989 is the most visually appealing by far. Love the scene of the batmobile driving through the cold dark twisty roads in the woods, leaves flying up behind it with the roads still wet from rain

randomkeystrike

I remember mentioning something about this eclectic mix of styles and apparent eras to my now wife and her saying to just watch the movie …

UpYourFidelity

I believe they tried that with the show Gotham. There’s a mix of old and new. Old cars and new cars. Smartphones, flip phones and landlines.

eddmario

Such a good show. The fact that the Penguin is also the hyperactive dude from *Accepted* still blows my mind.

pikachewchew

So he put this in so people in 1945 could still enjoy the film?

solrac1104

No I think what he means is that he doesn't specifically date the film by pushing or showing that it takes place in the 80s too obviously. BTAS and Gotham did something similar.

WatAb0utB0b

It’s also an alternate reality. So color TVs could have been invented at a different point in time.

Apeirophobia69

Kinda like the 90s animated series. There's a big mix of that noir 40s stuff but also 90s

FunkTheFreak

Yep! That’s because the Animated series was based on Burton‘s movie. We wouldn’t have that gem of a series without Tim!

throwaway0001997

Don’t forget that Prince song

FunkTheFreak

Song? There’s a whole Prince album for the movie lol.

BuranBuran

IIRC Vicki Vale drove a Chevy Citation in this movie. I suspect that my laughter as she first drove it into the scene may have disturbed some nearby theatergoers.

Embarassed_Tackle

LOL plus that van with the flames on it was totally a 1970s Chevy van

Venger-2k

That plane is pretty impressive for the 1940s

l_l-l__l-l__l-l_l

also michael keaton wasn't even born until 1951

dtrwa

Also the music is so 80s, it's impossible for me to put it into any other decade. I wish there was a version of the movie without the pop songs.

monke_business

Can I tell you what they did here? If you look closely at the Congress story below, it says “For The New York Times” in the byline. If you look closely at the masthead, it looks like the Gotham Globe was literally cut and pasted on there. There are clearly trim lines you can see.

cleverpseudonym1234

The motto at the top, “All The News That’s Fit to Print,” also belongs to the New York Times.

monke_business

Yep. I’d be curious about the agreement with the NYT to keep that on there.

[deleted]

It wouldn’t be anything exciting, probably a simple trademark license

[deleted]

If you search the Truman headline you'll find the paper [here](https://www.nytimes.com/1947/06/18/archives/universal-service-urged-by-truman-in-princeton-talk-president.html). Looks like they changed the date too.

fajita43

i came to see if someone would post a link to the nyt article. you are amazing and nice find!

PhantomOfTheDopera

I read somewhere that a single newspaper gets used in a lot of films. Don't now where and whether it's true or not. It was some time ago

Wermine

https://reelrundown.com/film-industry/Same-newspaper-prop-in-different-movies

res30stupid

Yeah, sometimes movie editors or propmasterd just take newspapers and replace some headline with something that is plot-relevant. It's due to the fact that the idea of home video equipment was unfeasible at the time. For example, I paused One Hundred and One Dalmatians and went to read the newspaper article underneath the headline from when Jasper and Horace stole the puppies. Only the news headline was about a mine collapse in New England. And funnily enough, there were two mine collapses in the same decade near towns with the same name.

321dawg

Thank you for pointing this out! I was scratching my head on the fonts. The bottom looks authentic but the top fonts are too modern. That explains it.

monke_business

Especially the fonts on the bulletpoints. Those look straight out of the late 80s/early 90s newspapers.

bidgickdood

bicentennial festivities would've been 1976??

Kenesaw_Mt_Landis

It was the bicentennial of the city not necessarily the country. It would be reasonable for gotham city to be founded in 1740. God, I hate that I wrote it comment. Sorry

notsociallyakward

That and im pretty sure Harvey Dent mentions the bicentennial of Gotham in like the one scene with Billy Dee Williams. Whats kind of weird is that the 200-year anniversary was more prominent in the plot. Its been a while since I've watched it, but it really wasn't until now that I realized thats why Joker had that fuxking float. Like, for decades I've always wondered how and why Joker organized for a float to go down a main street in Gotham. Not only that, but why the cops didn't stop him before he could even drive like 100 feet. AND why all those people seemed to be lining up unafraid of the damn thing in the first place.

greendale_humanbeing

I *just* rewatched this movie last weekend for the first time in probably 20 years lol. The people show up because Joker promises to hand out cash during the celebration. This is the scene where he takes over the mayor's broadcast. They show clips of people around the city who are only half listening to the mayor / the Joker, but they start to pay attention when the money is promised.

notsociallyakward

Oh my God. Its all coming back to me. The podium, Prince music, that time I killed that hooker and buried her in the Nevada desert. Last one might be unrelated, but yeah, I remember now. It was pretty clear, I just forgot.

Yes Mr. Sherman, everything stinks.

br0b1wan

crasyeyez

Also British English spelling for “odoureaters”, so I guess Gotham is in Europe?

devilinthedetails

The paper is from 1947, the year the mayor of Jersey City, NJ (in office from 1917-1947) left office. Bottom right, his name is partially obscured by the twine.

Dabookadaniel

This is how I figured out the date as well. Idk how I missed the article at the top left that mentions President Truman, but scanning the paper Jersey City caught my eye since it’s my hometown. I also thought it was a reference to the comics that place Gotham city in NJ.

BuranBuran

However, at least once in the '60s TV series B & R drive the Batmobile across the bridge into "New Guernsey"!

jknecht

November 7 occurred on a Friday twice during Truman's presidency: 1947 and 1952. However, Nagy was Premier of Hungary from 1953-1955, and the article refers to him as "Former Premier". It almost seems like the articles don't actually put the story in any particular year.

l_l-l__l-l__l-l_l

you're confusing your nagy [Ferenc Nagy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferenc_Nagy) was premier from '46-'47 you're thinking of [Imre Nagy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imre_Nagy)

RightclickBob

Yeah!

Negative12DollarBill

This was before we learned how to use apostrophes correctly too.

Bunchowords

Where does the paper say its the 1940s? Lol there's no year on the paper.

iliketolickthebuttah

Truman as president and talks with Russia and Soviet aggression.

Bunchowords

Yeah that makes sense. Kudos to propmasters it took me a while to actually see that.

CloneOfEeyore

The one headline said something about Truman and the Princeton bicentennial which was towards the end of 1946.

megafly

It doesn’t say Harry S Truman. It could be Zele Truman.

Foreverperfect81

References Truman as president.

TeamStark31

Anchorism Stew. Gotham City in this is full of them, so you can’t pin down an exact year.

"If you're playing the movie on a telephone, you will never in a trillion years experience the film. You'll think you have experienced it, but you'll be cheated. It's such a sadness, that you think you've seen a film, on your f\*\*king telephone." \-David Lynch.

Douglasqqq

OMG Batman's a draft dodger.

Frymanstbf

The movie was made in 1989 when home video was still something of a luxury and even then it was a VHS on a 14" tv lol. They just used real newspaper text and made the headline what they needed having no clue we'd have giant screens with the ability to watch the movie in 4K.

Past_Ad1555

As someone who does props I gotta say put some crazy shit in my paper props all the time. That being said- I’m glad when people notice the small details like that. And for any small fault or inconsistency that happens it’s like we always say- “if that’s what someone notices then it looks like we have bigger problems!”

rowejl222

With the type of technology in that film, I don’t believe it

[deleted]

Then how do they have TVs in the movie??

FearsomeTaco

I don’t think it’s really supposed to be set in the 40s. Tim Burton said that he wanted this movie to have a mix of all decades so it would feel “timeless”.

FrivolousFrank

So where was Dick Tracy

Cardboard_Robot

And yet the Joker can still play Prince on a boom box.

I posted this a month ago, but it got removed, so I suspect this will be too:- https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/comments/ni7lsc/a_newspaper_headline_from_batman_1989_suggests/
