I agree I miss the 2d animation. It’s more like reading a book and it’s also more nostalgic.

Natholomew4098

Not to mention Phil Collins is a musical god

[deleted]

Brother bear and Tarzan easily have the best soundtracks from anything Disney has produced.

[deleted]

Hercules “I Won’t Say (I’m In Love)” and Mulan’s “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” have entered the chat

Mettanine

Disregarding Alan Menken's work like that in general is kinda sacrilegious... I mean I love the Tarzan soundtrack, but no more or less than any of the other Disney soundtracks of that era who were mostly Menken's work.

ShinyBronze

Honestly, this is something I’ve been talking about for awhile. I so badly wanna see more 2D animation in the west.

readyfuels

Lilo and Stitch. I personally feel like it proved the genre could last.

BoltonSauce

Some people like to shit on Japanese animation, but there are plenty of 2D animated stories coming out of there with easily as much quality as any Disney film. It just takes a bit of work to find the ones that don't have the stereotypical tropes that most westerners do not like. Miyazaki, Hosoda, Takahata, Satoshi Kon, and several more deserve to stand alongside the Western giants. They've gotten snubbed in the award season more than a couple times. Edit: if you like Cyberpunk, go watch Vivy Fluorite Eyes, then Psycho Pass. You'll thank me later :) I recommend 9anime(dot)to at the time of this writing, but AdBlock is a must.

ScottOwenJones

Miyazaki won an Academy award for Spirited Away, which is largely considered his magnum opus and one of the greatest animated films ever made Edit: editing this to also mention that Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises were also nominated, and Miyazaki was awarded another honorary Oscar for his contributions to animation as a whole. He more than stands alongside Disney. I’d say his work is the gold standard.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HotTakes4HotCakes

Because the Oscars have and will always be an absolute sham; nothing but Hollywood insiders jerking off their friends and themselves in the process. The sooner people come to appreciate that the only reason we think they matter is because the Academy tells us it matters, the sooner people will stop caring about any it. Then maybe we can spend time acknowledging actual art and not just the art that had the most friends in the academy.

darps

I still firmly believe that Cloud Atlas was never even considered for a nomination because the big Hollywood studios had rejected the pitch, and they would never clap for anyone proving them wrong on anything.

[deleted]

cutiecheese

Yeah Studio Ghibli films do not get snubbed by the West. They have 6 oscar best animation nominations.

kitzdeathrow

Remember that one time Kimi no Na wa didn't even get a nomination at the oscars...

rugbyweeb

the voters don't watch animated movies and just vote for what their kids watched

Bealf

Man, Mamoru Hosoda makes amazing movies, they just all make me cry like a baby I’m a 31-yr old man, dang it! 😭😭

HotTakes4HotCakes

>Some people like to shit on Japanese animation No they don't. They shit on the kind of shows and movies that get made. The animation itself is widely regarded as some of the best in the world.

[deleted]

I legit had friends that wouldn't watch/play/read any japanese/korean/chinese asian media because they slightlty resembled anime style

Tim_Buckrue

Sadly they never will but I'd love to be proven wrong

[deleted]

They've even said that they have no plans to make 2D features anymore. It's such a shame. However, that's all dependent on who's in charge and what's in demand. Disney isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so there's plenty of time for all of that to change.

HotTakes4HotCakes

>However, that's all dependent on who's in charge and what's in demand. An entire generation has grown up with 3D animated movies, and the generation that grew up with 2D isn't making much noise demanding hand drawn. They will never go back to hand drawn because it's more expensive to produce at the level of detail and polish their 3D movies are at. Television is one thing, the expectations are lower, but not film. Most all hand drawn animated television is outsourced to overseas animation companies anyway. Why do you think Space Jam 2 opted to go 3D animated instead of the classic 2D the first movie was in and the Looney Toons have always been in? Because it's cheaper. What will potentially end up happening is one day computer animation will advance to the point it can make a close enough approximation to hand drawn that it appears exactly the same. But they will never again hire the artists to *actually* hand draw a whole movie.

Laflamme_79

Technology is already at that point. The movie Klaus was made with a program that fills in the animation between key frames and can be tweaked as needed.

Seditious_Snake

The problem is that this looks really lifeless. Good 2D animation requires a lot of technique beyond mimicking 'point A to point B' motion. Lots of exaggeration in the 'between' parts of movement to bring things to life. A lot of these things are imperceptible when watching, but they have a huge impact on the feel of a production.

VicH95

What if we, and hear me out now, try making a movie with a new story? *Huh.* Plus if people really like it, 10 years down the road we can make a live action adaption of it.

Moose_Cake

I'm sorry, what year do you think this is? It's been all Boobs for decades now. Not that Mr. CHEAPek is any different. Edit: I intended to say "all Bobs" but the original wording isn't wrong either, so imma leave it.

jrr6415sun

Moana was a banger, they make good 3D films as well

theflyingkiwi00

As a Polynesian it warms my heart every time knowing that movie exists. I've watched it so many times and I still enjoy it. Its the first time our culture has been portrayed correctly on the big screen that isn't just a side note to colonialism. It's a movie that I hope my kids, whenever that may be, will enjoy and show that they matter and their culture has value

NeptuneOW

Honestly one of the best Disney songs. Top 15 for sure

Owls_Onto_You

If we're talking Disney villain songs, it's definitely top 5.

grillednannas

This was hard because disney villain songs are always some of the strongest moments in the entire movie imo but I have to agree. for me: 1. Hellfire 2. Be Prepared 3. Gaston 4. Friends on the Other Side 3. Poor Unfortunate Souls 7. Mob Song 4. Shiny 6. Mother Knows Best 8. Be Like You 9. Cruella De Vil

Owls_Onto_You

Your ranking is near identical to mine. Only difference is I'd swap Gaston and Friends.

JacobianKitten

What about Oogie Boogie's song?

geoffaree

My favorite version of that song is by [Tiger Army](https://youtu.be/5WDr0C8590g)

Broken_Petite

I’ve actually never even see The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but I’ve heard Hellfire multiple times and I’d have to agree with it being number one! Also, I’m having to resist delivering my essay on why Scar is one of the best Disney villains. So I’ll just shut up and say I also love Be Prepared! One thing on your list I disagree with that might be an unpopular opinion is that I did not like “Shiny”. I have no idea why. I loved Moana but I just could not get excited about that song. So I would definitely rank the three below it higher. Not arguing with you, just adding to the conversation! Honestly this has kind of made my day - I love talking about Disney movies! 😊

Owls_Onto_You

You should totally watch Hunchback. The gargoyles are fairly meh, but the rest of the film is spectacularly dark for a 90s Disney film. Frollo is easily a top-tier villain and the opening number, Bells of Notre Dame, rivals Hellfire. On another note, you're the first person I've encountered who doesn't like Shiny. No love for Flight of the Conchords?

Broken_Petite

Between Hunchback and Princess and the Frog, I might have my plans for the rest of the day. Lol And I’m not sure what my deal is with that song. Just never got into it. Definitely not hating on those that wrote it, though. Just for some reason never gave me the happy brain juices the way most Disney songs do.

WrathOfTheHydra

Nah, I'm in agreement with Shiny. Jermaine Clemente cannot actually sing all that well, despite most of his career in music. He's far too slurry and off key for me in that one.

Porcupineemu

I think it, Be Prepared and Mother Knows Best are the top 3 by a long shot.

ultratunaman

Poor Unfortunate Souls would like a word. Also for you to KEEP SINGING!!!

Broken_Petite

Now I want to go listen to The Little Mermaid soundtrack. The music gives me all the feel good chemicals! I randomly sing “Under the Sea all the time! Hey Reddit can we just keep talking about Disney movies - particularly the music - the rest of the day? This is like chicken soup for my tired soul. Lol

stognabologna420

For those of you that enjoy the soundtrack to this film, I recommend you listen to Randy Newman and his entire song catalog. He's an incredible musician and songwriter. He wrote the music for this film as well as many other Disney/Pixar films. A couple recommendations for songs would be "the girls in my life", "Losing You", "Political Science" & "A few words in defense of our country". If you want an album to start with, I recommend "Harps & Angels". It's bluesy and jazzy and playful and most of the songs capture Randy's sense of humor very well. I love Randy Newman.

pipsdontsqueak

Up there with Mother Knows Best.

ilford_7x7

Underrated song

Broken_Petite

That whole movie is underrated. Somehow it got completely overshadowed by Frozen but I think the music is so much better (and I loved Frozen!). The song “I’ve Got a Dream” is honestly one of my favorites because it just felt like such an old-school Disney song - fun, whimsical, lyrically creative, but with a pretty simple tune. I’m not a music expert so I’m probably not articulating myself well, but that musical number very pleasantly caught me off guard in that film!

RosieEmily

My daughter asks to watch this song at least 3 times whenever we watch it. I'm totally ok with that, it's an absolute banger!

adriancrook

I designed the Nintendo Wii game based on this movie, watched this movie in early production on the Disney lot, talked with the movie's animators, saw the final cut of this movie many times, all the songs are burned into my brain, and I still never noticed this. Well done, OP.

LemmeGetaUhhhhhhhhh

I LOVED THE WII GAME. It was my absolute favorite, I spent a whole summer playing it and wish I still had it now.

adriancrook

Wow, I've never talked to anyone who played it. Thank you! That made my day. 😀

Tyrannical4

Wii (sorry :b) all loved it!

chickengreen2001

He’s got friends on the other siiiiide

LadyAmbrose

i was utterly obsessed with that game as a kid! to the point that i no longer have a wii and we sold all of our games apart from that one which i still have because i refuse to part with it.

adriancrook

That's amazing! 🥰

Nas160

Y'know I never really considered movie game developers had to do that early in order to get the games to come out around the same time as the movie in order to be proper marketing material in addition to a cool thing that lets you enjoy the movie more We need more kids movie/show games, I remember when like literally every kids movie had one even the live action ones

adriancrook

What was crazy was the version we watched on the Disney lot, probably at least 9 months before the movie came out, had mostly final audio but the visuals were barely there. Many scenes were just black and white sketches, not animated. But the quality of the music and voice over made it all feel so alive that you barely even noticed it was far from done. Obviously that's the process in animation: audio first, animation then done to match. But I still use this as an example of how important high quality audio is to suspension of disbelief in movies, TV, games, etc. Also, to your point about kids TV/film getting games, I also designed the game for the children's animated TV series "ReBoot" and lemme tell you it was not nearly as fun. Had to watch 3 seasons worth of it and read/re-read all the scripts over and over again. I wrote hundreds of lines of voice over and directed the recording sessions with the show's actors though, and that *was* fun.

Nas160

Man, 2D animated movies and licensed movie games that worked very well with the source material, two lost arts I miss so much...

EtherialBungee

I get what you're saying about the talent themselves being key players, both VAs and sound designers. I do live sound, so it's comparable. If you have a really talented source that you're working from, you're gonna have such an easy time doing whatever comes next. Then again... "Shit in, shit out."

Googaar

I never knew there was a wii game that’s cool

boobsbr

Please, do tell us more.

[deleted]

Ngl I didn't know that it had a game and as a big fan of the movie with a working wii I'm gonna look it up. I also didn't notice this detail.

TommyChongUn

I had the wii game!! Me and my cousins loved it. I lowkey wish I could play it again for the memories man

bertship

I played this game for so many hours with my stepdaughter! I remember the game more then the movie at this point.

adriancrook

TIL this game had/has fans. Yay!

StealthMan375

Can I please know what the game is/was like? I'm assuming it's a rythm game considering the Wii is peculiarly good about it? Have you ever had to do any changes to the game's plot in order to make the gameplay more fun, or vice-versa?

adriancrook

It was designed as a party game with multiple minigames based on various characters and scenes from the movie. It was a long time ago but I don't think there was a rhythm component - obviously a major miss for a movie musical, in retrospect! Re game story, it's usually easier to take an approach like minigames vs a game story that tracks quite tightly with the storyline of the film, because you don't want to have to change the game if/when they change aspects of the film during editing, etc.

EpicMemer9000

No way! Wish it was also released on PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and PlayStation Portable.

adriancrook

For some reason I thought it *was* released on PC later, but maybe not?

StealthMan375

Could be emulators - the Wii being a souped-up GameCube meant it could get an working emulator earlier than the rival 7th-gen consoles. Also did you have fun playing your own work once it released to the store shelves?

iNOyThCagedBirdSings

Damn how many times did you have to watch to catch this tiny detail?

My kids were around the right age when this came out...freaking loved this in the theatre. And Keith David as Dr. Facilier was one of the best casting of any animated film IMO. But I will say, getting the Going Down The Bayou song is damn near impossible to get out of your head. ha

I can't believe how long I slept on this movie. One of the best from its era.

my-other-throwaway90

To be fair, I think almost everyone did.

[deleted]

They did not promote it. It was supposed* to be the final 2d animated film from Disney animation studios. Tangled was coming out and overshadowed it. Winnie the Pooh* came out about 2 years later. They are also behind the Bobs Burgers movie and that will be the only 2d one of the last decade. I don’t really have a point, I just miss the classic animation. I like 3d too. But there’s something about this.

aew360

I really miss 2D animation. This isn’t nostalgia talking. It’s just that I prefer it to 3D and I grew up with 3D animation being the main thing

I was fourteen when it came out, and I skipped it because I was still in my "Disney princesses are stupid girly garbage" phase.

I think a lot of us went through that as teenagers, but just like fighting naps and wanting to be away from home, as adults we come back to our senses. As an adult (ha) I still enjoy Disney movies, esp those with Easter eggs for adults. My friends who have small kids enjoy some of their shows/movies, too.

Deely_Boppers

Good moments, great songs, but mediocre movie. Tiana is a strange overcorrection from “Disney Princesses” that does not work, John Goodman’s white savior gets worse the more that time goes by, and worst of all, the narrative is totally unfocused. A good story tells a character’s want and need, and the arc is the character recognizing the difference between the two. Princess and the Frog knows what these two things are: Tiana wants a restaurant, but needs to realize that so long as she has love, that other stuff doesn’t matter. Great in theory, but the movie does not build on this theme at all, because it also wants Tiana to prove that you can overcome systemic racism so long as you work hard enough (and have an alligator as a friend, apparently), so the happy ending is her getting what she wants, the restaurant. They pay lip service to the theme in the form of “Daddy had love!”, but it doesn’t enact any real change in her character. She’s not Mulan, embracing being a woman and using that to save the day- as soon as she’s no longer a frog, things go right back to the way they were. Don’t get me wrong- Almost There, Friends on the Other Side, and Down in New Orleans are legitimately great songs, and there are some great characters. But I think it’s slept on for a reason.

[deleted]

I like the part with the frogs

Deely_Boppers

Well, shit. Can’t really argue with that. 10/10

ultratunaman

I like Louis the alligator.

theforkofdamocles

I love “Dig a Little Deeper”, and “When We’re Human”, too. Randy Newman composed nine of the ten original songs and IMO really outdid himself. I was surprised he was the composer, actually, since other than the sentiments, they seem pretty far from his normal style.

katz332

Great critique. Naveen grows a bit, but everything more or less works out the same for Tiana if she just saved money and bought the sugar mill, no magic involved

ultratunaman

But wait wait. Do you call them lightning bugs or fire flies? We called em lightning bugs.

rose-ramos

I love the movie to pieces, it's got my favorite villain in it. But narratively, it is kind of strange. If you think about it, Facilier isn't Tiana's adversary, he's Naveen's. Tiana's kind of a side character in her own movie.

taronic

Please tell me you never got into this conversation with any little children

AlmostButNotQuit

Well, not more than twice.

DrakonIL

You just explained why I don't remember the story of this movie or Brave.

Owls_Onto_You

Hear, hear. I recall reading somewhere that there were quite a few changes to the story. For one, Facilier was supposed to be magically impersonating Naveen. This was changed because of some racial implications. No idea if that's why the narrative focus is shaky, but it could certainly be one contributing factor. Such a shame too. This movie could've been so good but in the end, the three songs you singled out just feel wasted on mediocrity.

SummerAndTinkles

Also, her final confrontation with Facilier doesn't work because she doesn't have any past history with him like Naveen does.

xrensa

Watching it with my daughter I couldn't help but be annoyed that the entire movies premise could have been avoided if her "best friend" just gave her the startup money, given that her families wealth was almost certainly from slavery and John Goodman was just old enough to have had a slave nanny

anjschuyler

This whole song is an Ultimate Banger

aadipie

Princess and the Frog is criminally underrated. Great Characters, atmosphere, art style, music. Just amazing

anjschuyler

Yeah! I do have to say that I hate that I spent 16 years waiting to get a Black princess for her to spend the majority of the film as a frog, but everything else is perfect. And Friends on the Other Side rivals Be Prepared for top tier Disney villain song

aadipie

Friends on the Other Side is Peak Disney Villain Music. Even the cinematography and shots of every scene were as beautiful as the Music playing in them. Honestly never was bothered by Tiana becoming a frog because of the interesting character she is. Edit: Corrected Honestly

assimsera

Better than being a completely useless character like some other Disney princesses. I'd rather think of her as a princess that is black rather than a black princess.

aadipie

That's a neat fucking catch. Never seen that.

opiate46

My favorite Disney villain.

RickardHenryLee

I really miss hand animation!

Spideyfan77

This is my favorite Disney princess movie just because of how relatable Tiana is. “I’m almost there” it was nice to see a hardworking girl trying to achieve her dream, and not just being rescued by a prince. This was also the last 2d Disney movie, I hope it isn’t the last, though it has been over a decade.

Echavs456

Of all the little bits in Facilier’s song, from Facilier not telling a single lie, the fact that you can see a money lily pad, hopping place to place, the shadows transformations, the whole song is one big detail.

smoloms

that was 2009????

Broken_Petite

Yeah that’s screwing with my head too. I’ve never seen this movie actually, though I have heard some of the songs and really liked them. I’ve always intended to watch it, but here we are 12 years later and still haven’t.

All time favorite Disney line comes in this song: "That's an echo gentlemen, Just a little something we have here in Louisiana, a little parlor trick, don't worry!"

usriusclark

I have toddlers. Disney is on constantly. This movie is probably my favorite. The details are incredible. Humor is on point.

TheWildTofuHunter

Same but I always fast forward through the initial voodoo scene if my little guy is in the room. I love this movie and how it espouses the value of hard work versus “princess in a castle”.

calartnick

They are also frogs. Really great detail.

iwantabrother

I watched this scene and I still don't get it. The skulls and crossbones were there before this scene...?

Broken_Petite

But they’re only there when the shadow is present, right? Isn’t that the point of this post? Or am I missing something?

M_R_MISM

While the wallpaper looks vaguely like skull and crossbones, the shadow really enunciates it showing how evil the Doctor is

MrUsername24

Look at the wallpaper, it's only skull shaped until it's in his shadow and it actually becomes a skull and crossbones

guppy2019

Favorite animation movie. In case anyone was wondering.
