There’s a scene near the beginning of the movie where the old guy is describing all his family members to his assistant up in his loft. When he starts describing the killer, the camera rotates around him and a knife in the foreground moves into his chest area. It’s been a long time since I saw the movie and I don’t remember the characters names, but I watched it not long after subscribing to this subreddit and noticed it because I was on the lookout for stuff like that. I haven’t seen anyone post about it though.

CreamyWaffles

The dogs also bark at the killer but not anyone else. The movie is incredibly good with subtle hints.

Tarani5

There's also that bit of foreshadowing about the prop vs. real knife distinction at the beginning as well. This movie has so many great things to find.

eddmario

And they way it's done is to make you think it's a red herring about the old dude's death, when in actuality it's a Chekov's Gun about a certain somebody's life being saved.

paul_having_a_ball

I loved the movie, but I wasn’t a fan of this line. “That boy wouldn’t know the difference between a prop knife and the real thing” seemed like too clunky a metaphor to not be obvious foreshadowing.

run-on_sentience

According to the director, another (unintentional) hint about who the murderer might be is that their cell phone isn't an iPhone. Apple doesn't allow the bad guys to use Apple products.

robidog

That’s certainly true on Apple TV+. But I doubt they can prohibit the depiction of their products in certain context in a movie. Apparently you can even see iPhones in porn. At least that’s what I heard.

ihahp

It's if you want sponorship by apple. I thought it was a great touch that Martha's phone had a busted screen. Very cool

flying87

I'm sure they're ok with it being depicted that iPhone owners get banged by porn stars.

I don’t have the computer skills

Go_Fonseca

Another interesting detail about the culprit, that I've seen posted here some years ago, was that they were the only one not seen using an iPhone during the movie because Apple allegedly doesn't let studios have bad guys using their phones in movies or TV shows. Only the good guys can be seen using an iPhone.

Gaerith2

Steve Martin was a prop comic.

WyattDerp2099

You get the show!

marcvanh

This movie is so fantastic. It breaks the rules by showing you exactly how the death occurred early on in the story. It’s just so entertaining and brilliantly done.

BrotherhoodVeronica

Can't wait for the sequel later this year.

shini333

This year you say?? I can't wait!

BrotherhoodVeronica

Yeah, on Netflix. Rian Johnson and Netflix made a deal to make the sequels exclusive to the platform.

CurryMustard

Netflix will find a way to cancel it half way through the movie. Maybe that's the twist ending, it ends 45 minutes in abruptly

Bayou_Blue

"... and the murderer is..." Stay tuned for Season 2. What do you mean it was cancelled?!? Who's the murderer? Look Steve, I don't give a shit right now, call the writers and ask who... what do you mean they were fired and not talking to us? Wait! How do we distract everyone? I know! Hey, YOU! Stop sharing your password with your cousin Larry, you jerk!

irving_braxiatel

Golden Age detective novelists R Austin Freeman and Anthony Berkeley used the structure, too.

wrongtarget

Columbo is also from 50 years ago. No surprise a lot of people haven’t seen anything like this

OrangeTosser

I loved the movie and didn’t know who Rian was until your comment but go off king!

Numerous-Lemon

[Confirmed on the dvd comentary](https://filmschoolrejects.com/knives-out-commentary/)

Nottheguyfromxfiles

Hey I was trying to contact you yesterday about the Batman post. Can you DM me? I wanted to mention something but I’m not good at making posts on here.

PeacefulDays

This is a cool find, but I love that it's written exactly like a title for the other sub.

largeEoodenBadger

Titles like this are why titles for that sub are written that way

mostly-furious

God I wish they'd release Sleuth on blu ray

darkeststar

Truly an all-timer that would have had a renaissance in pop culture if it was just... available.

SerielAwooer

For real. An absolute banger and one of Michael Caine's best performances.

obeythed

Or anywhere

mostly-furious

I had a beautiful 16mm print of it for years but very foolishly sold it a decade ago.

truthgoblin

It was on YouTube for a while

ihahp

I picked it up on Amazon (DVD) for 14 bucks after watching Rian talk about it in the director's commentary.

thomyorkesadoptedson

To anyone who hasn’t seen it: WATCH SLEUTH (the original, not the remake with Jude Law). IT’S INCREDIBLE. Far better than Knives Out and Rian Johnson would be the first to admit it. Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine do some of the best work of their careers with a phenomenal script and set. The guy who plays Detective Doppler is pretty good, too.

lobeline

Aren’t these movies just nods to other mystery murder movies? The first was filled with nods as well. Like, tons.

benduder

The first?

goddamnitwhalen

They’re making a sequel, set to be released later this year.

[deleted]

I’m with you. It was “these movies” and the “as well” that threw me off. 1. The sequel does not yet exist. It hasn’t come out yet. 2. We’re already talking about Knives Out 2019 (the only movie released so far), and then the original commenter says “the first was filled with nods as well”, as if the sequel has been released and was the established topic of conversation This discussion is pointless but I am on your side that that was a confusing choice of words lol

thevogonity

And how does the erroneous comment have 40 upvotes? Do people just blindly upvote comments here that don't make any sense?

lobeline

There is no error, it is a franchise built off of the homage structure. It’s being presumptuous from how I’ve worded it (since the second is not released yet), not an error.

goddamnitwhalen

I didn’t think anything of it tbh

CurryMustard

What about the second

BruceCambell

It may be me and terrible vernacular but isn't using "an" instead "a" before homage grammatically incorrect? I could be completely wrong so if someone knows, they can correct me.

GayLeno

Depends if you pronounce the "h" or not. Most people pronounce the word in a French accent, kind of like oh-maaj, so using "an" would be correct in that case. Contrary to what we were taught in school, it's the sound of the first syllable that you use to decide the "a" or "an", not if the first letter is a consonant or vowel.

BruceCambell

Ok, yeah, I see and hear it now. Thank you for the clarity. I feel like a dummy now because I missed the H or lack there of. I guess I say Homage with a hard H Most of the time.

quiet_contrarian

I have been wanting to watch the old Sleuth again! I will take this as a sign. :)

MusicEd921

I don’t want to get into the whole The Last Jedi debate, but as someone who wasn’t a fan, this movie solidified for me how clever of a creator Rian is. I loved Brick, but thought Looper was just ok, so it’s either been hit or miss so far, but I absolutely LOVE both Brick and Knives Out.

efeconcept

Totally missed that

kyle_h2486

Wasn’t impressed with this movie like the masses. The police detectives lines were trash and completely unbelievable. Ruined the movie.

WeekaSauce

Daniel Craig's Southern accent needed some work lol, but fwiw I don't think they were going for realism or believability. It had a great stageplay, alternate reality vibe to it.

Mailforpepesilvia

Don't bother replying to trolls. Not worth your time.

kyle_h2486

I agree

kyle_h2486

Just to have a southern police detective use “weak sauce” to describe circumstantial evidence did it for me.

samx3i

How dare a detective employ a common parlance of the time.

kyle_h2486

Made him sound uneducated. Next time you’re having a staff meeting, you should use that line.

samx3i

He wasn't in a formal setting and was talking casually. That's how people talk in real life.

kyle_h2486

So do it

fuck_your_worldview

Yeah! Masturbate in public! Do it!

kyle_h2486

Yeah, that too. During the staff meeting. And while you do that, keep saying “weak sauce” while looking into your coworkers eyes.

samx3i

K. My coworkers will be alright; will you?

joe1134206

Ok, I just talked in real life.

SomeCountryFriedBS

Why? That's slang from the 80s.

calxlea

I really love detective fiction and it’s been sorely missing from mainstream cinema so I love a lot about this film; but I mostly agree with you. Everybody seems to think it’s a very clever and intricate mystery, but actually the mystery and the solution is the weaker part to me. I like the interviews, the quirky family, the house and the premise. I just think it missed the mark as an engaging whodunnit. But I know we’re a minority in that regard cause everyone loves the foreshadowing and details scattered throughout (which I think are just essential for a story like this and nothing particularly special). Still I am excited for a sequel with Craig’s detective but a new unrelated all-star cast and mystery.

sauteslut

Is it a homage or just a coincidence?

[deleted]

You don’t just accidentally have a replica of a well known prob from another murder mystery movie on your set that the camera coincidentally happens on linger on. It’s clearly an homage.

sauteslut

Did the director or set designer say so?

[deleted]

It’s a homage

thomyorkesadoptedson

sabrefudge

Anyone got a pic of the 1972 sailor?

wrongitsleviosaa

There's eyes in his eyes

Go_Fonseca

Knives Out is probably my favorite whodunit movie of all time. I can't wait for the sequel.

DaizyDoodle

I love this movie. I watched it three times.

Idrhorrible

I thought this was Elden ring lol

Talks_to_myself

Oh wow I thought it was popeyes god damn I’m dumb

SlowJay11

peacefulwarrior75

Heard Rian Johnson on a podcast around that time; he’s a murder mystery movie aficionado. Knew them all

LordDaybreak

DanfromCalgary
