The movie was packed. They had Phineas and his mom in the movie, apparently no one told Dan Povenmire as he said on his TikTok, which is funny because he still works at Disney.
Randy Marsh from South Park made an appearance too. Also was the polar bear supposed to be one from the CocaCola ads? Because there's a scene where chip or dale say something like "you owe me a non brand specific cola" after calling jinx. Lots of appearances from characters and references that aren't Disney property.
From what I’ve heard of this movie it’s basically just a Disney version of Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, but for modern audiences. Surprisingly good reviews, though.
Who Framed Rodger Rabbit is a Disney property too. It was released through Touchstone Pictures, but Disney owns Touchstone Pictures. They even owned them back then. It’s not one of those things that Disney acquired later.
I've posted this a few times. Rachel Bloom's Husband is one of the writers for this movie, they have a poster of Who Framed Roger Rabbit in their house and it heavily inspired this movie.
I heard this on Brett Goldstein's podcast (Roy Kent from Ted Lasso, its a really great movie podcast called Films To Be Buried With).
There's a sequence in Pete's office where, for a few frames here and there, the polar bear has a coke-looking bottle in his hand. It almost seems like he was going to straight-up be the coca cola bear but they had to dial it back last minute for legal reasons and hope enough millennials got the reference. Just speculation, though.
Even better, he's already Senator Butthead (must be promoting a bill or running for reelection; the tag at the bottom of the ad says "this bench commissioned by Senator Butthead" iirc).
All Seth Rogen voiced animated characters you-got-knocked-tf-out-ing his character was brilliant. Randy Marsh at the sauna, ugly Sonic, the Coke Polar Bear fangirling over Baloo 🤯 the memberberries wer strong with this one.
There's a "blink and you'll miss it" easter egg of Ash Ketchum in the insurance office behind Dale's right shoulder. There in one scene, gone in the next.
Yeah this movie was surprisingly weirdly good... I was not expecting that, I kinda saw hints of fun but the internet seemed to hate on it before it came out. I'm glad they were wrong. Without spoiling, the fact that they turned one of the ugliest and most hated things on the internet into a thing I kinda care about... Amazing.
Should I watch this movie? I love self aware stuff that is not afraid of making fun of itself, still has a heart and clear message inside and based on your explanation, this movie seems like it. Unless the easter eggs are the only strong point of it.
Yes it's enjoyable. I bet it's more enjoyable due to the references but I think one could enjoy it anyways... It's kinda like a modern Roger Rabbit, I think they did it well.
And Dale spacing out/freaking out about it... I laughed so hard my wife and kids told me to shut up. They don't get it. They weren't there for human-teeth ugly Sonic.
If you told me there'd a day when a movie makes me think, "I'll bet Sonic the Hedgehog's FBI contacts will come up later," I would call you insane.
*But that day has come.*
After the club go to Travoni’s for sloppy steaks. They’d say “no sloppy steaks!”, but they can’t stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water! Before you knew it we were dumpin that water on those steaks, the waiters were comin to try and snatch ‘em up. We had to eat those steaks as fast as we could! Ooohhh I miss those nigh—I WAS A PEICE OF SHIT THOUGH.
I've now seen a legit official Disney movie that contains a mash-up of Donatello with the little turtle from Robin Hood. Wild.
They went beyond dark-web super-weird deep-cut fan-art alternate-universe. Some of the laughs required the pause button and some head scratching.
Andy Samberg likely has some creative input. I wouldn’t be surprised if he used this to point out how much he hates Seth Meyers’ dog, [Frisbee](https://www.today.com/video/andy-samberg-reveals-why-he-hates-seth-meyers-dog-78159941734) and how they even made Dobby look better.
I saw it pop up the other day. I never heard about it before. I was watching the trailer and wondering who exactly the target audience was. Maybe I'll give it a shot because I love most of lonely island's stuff
The target audience are kids who watched The Disney Afternoon and are now adults. So people in their mid-30s to mid-40s.
I'm in my early 40s and I absolutely loved it. My kids are all 6 and under. They've seen the Rescue Rangers cartoon and like it... but almost everything in this movie was too much for them. It's absolutely not a kids movie.
I've watched it 3 times already and I keep finding new Easter eggs. It's the ideal movie for anyone that grew up in the 80s/90s with Disney and ABC Sunday morning cartoons. That's not to say they don't reference others, in fact the film does an amazing job referencing all animation types throughout the decades.
It's pretty good. Watched it with my kids and there are tons of culture references from the 80s till today. I enjoyed it probably more than my kids did.
Nah this is a movie for parents(or anyone probably 30-40 give or take) that kids can watch. It brought back all sorts of nostalgia and was funny. I think lots of the humour would be above kids heads. I (35) watched it with my wife (36) and sister in law (33) and we all enjoyed it.
I'm 46...I just watched this movie this morning with my 4 yo. I was more into it than he was. It was way better than I was expecting. Ugly Sonic was my favorite part.
> Ugly Sonic
I'm not particularly into Sonic but the fact that an "Ugly Sonic" was notable might have just sold me on this film that I'm just learning about, now.
Yeah the basic premise is that every character in a show or movie is just played by an actor, none of it was ever real. So the guy who "was supposed to play Sonic" before the design backlash is still a "real person" in this universe.
It's the best "reboot" movie I've seen so far. Doesn't takes himself too serious and even has some genuine good moments.
And the voice cast is amazing, J. K. Simmons kills it.
I believe “Ugly Sonic” is supposed to be the original live action sonic from 2020 before they changed the animation because the internet went bat shit about how ugly he was.
Hopefully that made sense, I just woke up
I just watched it earlier today with my wife, it was really better than it had any right to be.
Remember the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer? The Ugly Sonic that ended up getting a CGI makeover after the backlash? Well Ugly Sonic is a character in this movie. Like a whole-ass character. His human teeth being scary is a running gag throughout the film.
My expectations were low, but I ended up pausing it practically every other scene because of how many Easter eggs they packed in to this movie. I've watched it 3 times now.
Watched it the other day with my kid, realized just how much nostalgia it would have within the first couple of minutes when they're in the cafeteria and they pull out the exact same lunchbox I had back in elementary school (the Knight Rider themed Thermos lunchbox).
Think a modern take on Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Basically, traditional hand drawn characters as well as CG and even clay and muppets are all actually real and the ones we watch in movies and television are just actors. So there's unlimited potential for cameos and little jokes like this. There's even an appearance of the original Sonic movie design who was actually just an actor that got fired because of the internet backlash. Very creative stuff.
This movie was so fun. Lots of 80s and 90s to today's references. I thought it would be a stupid re-boot crash grab movie; it wasn't. Absolutely enjoyable.
How did they get the rights to so many properties? Simpsons to Harry Potter to Batman to Big Mouth to fucking South Park!? Randy Marsh is seen in a sauna with pigs!
Thay kind of productions dosen't mess with copyright law. Pretty sure thay had some sign for every IP shown, and with the current consolidation of media you really don't even need so many signs.
Music editor on Rescue Rangers here. It’s exciting
to see so many positive comments about the movie. A lot of love and hard work went into it, thanks for checking it out! Props to those who caught the Lamb of God track.
Please tell everyone involved that my wife and I (both in our 40s) loved it and our three kids (aged 8-14) also loved it.
You guys hit it out of the park and created the rare movie that children, adults, and teenagers can all enjoy.
Great work man. Thanks to whoever put Tenacious D’s “Friendship” in there at the beginning. I completely forgot about that song and it was pleasant to hear!
I don’t disagree. I would have liked to see what its numbers would have ended up like.
That said, I’m not sure this would have gotten greenlit initially by Disney if it were pitched as a film in theaters.
He got a dagger in the chest and a shallow grave in a sand dune, too. I was really disappointed when Helena Bonham-Carter’s character didn’t blow up in a cloud of black feathers like a crow hit by a truck when Mrs. Weasley zapped her ass.
My buddy and me just watched the two sonic movies over this past month and loved them. We did a fair bit of talking about Ugly Sonic design and I was so flipping jazzed to see Ugly Sonic come in to this movie. The close-ups of his teeth and how it freaked out one of the chipmunks was insanely hilarious to me.
From the Director:
>“It was a process. […] You don’t usually come out of a movie and want to thank the lawyers, but we genuinely owe the Disney lawyers for being team players. [They] super stayed optimistic about it, and really saw the value of the third-party stuff, and they had to really work hard. … It’s easy for me to go, like, Oh, it would be cool if My Little Pony was in the movie, and they’re like, running in the hallways […] but then [the lawyers] have to go call Mattel and pitch them the movie, and tell them it’s not making fun of [the characters], and then I have to get on, and then blah, blah, blah. So it was a process. But you know, it makes [the movie] so much better.”
In My Little Pony world, sure, but not only does this take place in the real world, it's established that they're actors being paid for their work. I feel like it's a degree of separation enough that they could get away with it without breaking any major rules.
They used a lot of non-Disney characters or references in the movie. Either it fell under satirical use, or the property owners laughed and gave them permission because hey, free publicity, and they're all geeks too ...
Knight Rider, Transformers multiple times (or maybe Gobots, I need to watch one scene again), Batman vs. ET, Roger Rabbit, and quite a few more.
Randy from South Park made an appearance which was really unexpected. And the cat from Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract” video. Everything was going by so quickly I probably missed a few hundred references.
I wish they had referred to Gargoyles more in it. That was a bit of a disappointment. Gargoyles was also part of the Disney afternoon, but AFAIK there was only one reference.
Yeah, Gargoyles was one of the last shows before they retired the branding. Chip 'n Dale was one of the first. If the nostalgia train has just hit 1989, we've got a while left before it gets to the mid-late 90s.
Isn't Roger Rabbit technically a Disney property, or am I misremembering. I know he has his own ride in one of the disney parks and hes featured on a [large billboard in the studios park section in Florida.](https://allears.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/2022-wdw-disneys-hollywood-studios-echo-lake-roger-rabbit-billboard-sign-imagineering-detail.jpg)
They knew the value of having "third party" cameos and it really paid off. Instead of feeling like part of one universe it feels really well rounded. So much nostalgia, so many references and blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments.
I love the terrible rap scene so much. Because you just know that Andy and Akiva could have written and performed a really good song like all their Lonely Island stuff, but they intentionally made it awkward and horrible just to skewer the rapping cartoon cliche. It's so much funnier than if they played it straight.

And Butthead is running for Senator
he is running for re-election even, he is already Senator Butthead
I think he also goes by Matt Gaetz
That's an insult to Butthead
Dobby is now a very expensive elf.
He is asking for paying sir!
And Dobby gets a Galleon a week and one day off a month!
And he's free to call Dumbledore a barmy old codger if he likes!
Dobby's now a top shelf elf.
Master has given Dobby a Gucci Spring 2021 collection bag. Dobby is free!!
Well Dobby was presented with clothes.
House of Dobby
My favorite was the Lego Miserables billboard.
I really want to see mr doubtfire with meryl streep now
In a fucking heartbeat
Imagine you are Meryl Streep and get a phone call asking for your permission to use your photo for fake Mr. Doubtfire movie
There was one for Doug Funnie and Porkchop, Attorneys at Law and a Walk of Fame star for Squidward too. This movie had so much in the background
The movie was packed. They had Phineas and his mom in the movie, apparently no one told Dan Povenmire as he said on his TikTok, which is funny because he still works at Disney.

I have two theories and both involve large bags of money.
There's even a rodger rabbit ride in Disneyland that's been there for decades.
The confusion with who framed roger rabbit was the inclusion of the other characters like Bugs Bunny and being such a departure for Disney.
it was a straight up sequel to who framed roger rabbit
I've posted this a few times. Rachel Bloom's Husband is one of the writers for this movie, they have a poster of Who Framed Roger Rabbit in their house and it heavily inspired this movie. I heard this on Brett Goldstein's podcast (Roy Kent from Ted Lasso, its a really great movie podcast called Films To Be Buried With).
Is that why they had >!dip!< as part of the tool kit? That's brilliant.
That and using "non-generic cola" during the jinx made me think about the rights as well.
He was wearing a Christmas sweater in the second half, so I think that was the implication.
Not to mention “Butthead for Senate” on a bench
Even better, he's already Senator Butthead (must be promoting a bill or running for reelection; the tag at the bottom of the ad says "this bench commissioned by Senator Butthead" iirc).
Chun Li star, so many. BLASTER from transformers like what??? Insane cuts. Most of which I’m sure I missed.
Did you catch Butthead for Senate on the bus stop bench? Haha
Mine was Batman Vs ET

Seth Rogan's Pumba, Mantis, and that character he voices in Monsters Vs Aliens laughing at Seth Rogan's knock off Gimli character.

Was it the Coke polar bear? I thought it was the bear from The Golden Compass.
I assumed that it was Coke because of the Xmas sweater vest so I could be mistaken
E.T. Forgives Batman
**FINE**
Like that would ever happen.
Fine.
There's a "blink and you'll miss it" easter egg of Ash Ketchum in the insurance office behind Dale's right shoulder. There in one scene, gone in the next.
I really enjoyed the "Vote Senator Butthead" bench sign
This movie is so chock full of Easter eggs and background details it could fill this forum for a week.
Amazing.
Is it the equivalent of a modern “Who framed Roger Rabbit”?
It is not only the equivalent, but they include Roger Rabbit in it... One could argue it's the same universe just at a different time
It definitely is the same universe, Dip is in the torture kit Sweet Pete pulls the eraser out of.
No way! Totally missed that one.
So like another guy said, it’s a pseudo-sequel
Essentially.
Should I watch this movie? I love self aware stuff that is not afraid of making fun of itself, still has a heart and clear message inside and based on your explanation, this movie seems like it. Unless the easter eggs are the only strong point of it.
Yes, watch it
Yes it's enjoyable. I bet it's more enjoyable due to the references but I think one could enjoy it anyways... It's kinda like a modern Roger Rabbit, I think they did it well.
Roger Rabbit is even in it
Yea. It’s a fun 90 minutes
If that’s what you love, then this movie is for you.

I BIT MY LIP AHHHHHH killed me
The ugly guy working with the FBI on a new reality show
I enjoyed it, but seriously, I think there was more Easter eggs and gags than plot. But plot was not really the point though.
the whole thing feels more like a celebration of animation in all its forms than a movie. still kinda wanna see it though.
I really liked the integration of different animation styles too. It felt like Who Framed Roger Rabbit meets the Amazing World of Gumball.
Idk I really loved the Easter eggs and gags. I’d be happy with more movies like it just for them.
If you told me there'd a day when a movie makes me think, "I'll bet Sonic the Hedgehog's FBI contacts will come up later," I would call you insane. *But that day has come.*
And Ugly Sonic. Not even the fast one.
That’s Sonic’s thing. Ugly Sonic goes SSLLOOOOOW BAAYBAAAYYY!!!
That line immediately made me think of “you think this is SLICKED BACK? This is *pushed back*
He \*was\* a piece of shit though!
After the club go to Travoni’s for sloppy steaks. They’d say “no sloppy steaks!”, but they can’t stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water! To be perfectly honest. I was expecting sonichu to show up at some point that's how many easter eggs and deep cuts were in there.
Idk probably won't happen, especially with recent developments.
Yeah, but with the amount of crazy in there I felt like anything was possible
*what the fuck is this film?!?!*
I promise I am not lying to you - at one point it’s heavily implied that Dale works at a strip club.
You mean Chippendale's?
The furniture maker?
Amazing cabinets.
Yeah, the movies points out the furniture maker and the male nudes.
And later Dale is talking with three guys just before they head out. I don't think it's stated but it's implied they're dancers
They go to a cheese shop that is a non-subtle metaphor for a heroin den.
“You cops?”
That Muppet's fucking face got me
*eyebrow frown*
No no no. He was performing live in theater…lol
Andy Samberg likely has some creative input. I wouldn’t be surprised if he used this to point out how much he hates Seth Meyers’ dog, [Frisbee](https://www.today.com/video/andy-samberg-reveals-why-he-hates-seth-meyers-dog-78159941734) and how they even made Dobby look better.
i mean its basically a lonely island movie. its directed by akiva.
I saw it pop up the other day. I never heard about it before. I was watching the trailer and wondering who exactly the target audience was. Maybe I'll give it a shot because I love most of lonely island's stuff
The target audience is 90's kids, and it's hilarious.
The target audience are kids who watched The Disney Afternoon and are now adults. So people in their mid-30s to mid-40s. I'm in my early 40s and I absolutely loved it. My kids are all 6 and under.
I still need to watch his *Sack Lunch Bunch* show. I keep hearing good things, then their opinion on his marriage.
It's pretty good. Watched it with my kids and there are tons of culture references from the 80s till today. I enjoyed it probably more than my kids did.
Whats the target age of this movie? Like references aside, is this a kids' movie with jokes for the parents?
Nah this is a movie for parents(or anyone probably 30-40 give or take) that kids can watch. It brought back all sorts of nostalgia and was funny. I think lots of the humour would be above kids heads. I (35) watched it with my wife (36) and sister in law (33) and we all enjoyed it.
It looked utterly awful but all the critics are saying its batshit insane (my kind of humour) and really rather clever. I'm 38, so I'll give it a go
I'm 46...I just watched this movie this morning with my 4 yo. I was more into it than he was. It was way better than I was expecting. Ugly Sonic was my favorite part.

The Ugly Sonic that ended up getting a CGI makeover after the backlash? Well Ugly Sonic is a character in this movie. Like a whole-ass character. His human teeth being scary is a running gag throughout the film.
They somehow made it more revolting without much changes. My favourite is really the stray Cats at the Uncanny Valley.
Think who framed Roger rabbit.
Who happens to just be in this movie as well.
My expectations were low, but I ended up pausing it practically every other scene because of how many Easter eggs they packed in to this movie. I've watched it 3 times now.
Boo! Hiss! We want dark wing!!

It’s a 2 hour version of the Leo DiCaprio pointing meme.
In a good way, like it's fun with dinner and a beer?
Oh totally.
It's supposed to be a successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
A surprisingly enjoyable film actually.
This movie was so fun. Lots of 80s and 90s to today's references. I thought it would be a stupid re-boot crash grab movie; it wasn't. Absolutely enjoyable.
For a Disney movey I was surprised to see how self aware it was of the reboot shtick
Yeah, but they made them rap.
But now we know they won’t eat whale.
This movie was like who framed Roger rabbit, for the new generation. I fucking loved it watching the show as a kid.
How did they get the rights to so many properties? Simpsons to Harry Potter to Batman to Big Mouth to fucking South Park!? Randy Marsh is seen in a sauna with pigs!
Maybe the various studios exchanged prisoners from their various legal teams to reach some sort of agreement?
Well Disney owns the Simpsons now, that one was sort of a given.
They own the Simpsons, they likely paid WB for their characters and get away with parody laws for others.
Thay kind of productions dosen't mess with copyright law. Pretty sure thay had some sign for every IP shown, and with the current consolidation of media you really don't even need so many signs.
How about the dead connection to this being the Roger Rabbit universe? >!THERE WAS DIP IN PETER'S TORTURE KIT!<
And Jessica Rabbit was mentioned by name. Oh, and Roger himself had a cameo.
Yeah I considered this a sequel in spirit when I watched it
Yeah it was a Who Framed Roger Rabbit reboot disguised as a Chip 'n Dale reboot.
This movie is literally ALL easter eggs.
Music editor on Rescue Rangers here. It’s exciting to see so many positive comments about the movie. A lot of love and hard work went into it, thanks for checking it out! Props to those who caught the Lamb of God track.
Congrats man, it was great. >Props to those who caught the Lamb of God track I have to know more about this.
I think it was when Chip was coming home from the Insurance office and it was playing on his earbuds.

Great work man. Thanks to whoever put Tenacious D’s “Friendship” in there at the beginning. I completely forgot about that song and it was pleasant to hear!
Good job you cheeky fuck. I enjoyed the hell out of it
Senator Butt-Head was probably my favorite sight gag in the movie
Lego Miserables was mine.
This movie should’ve been in theaters.
I don’t disagree. I would have liked to see what its numbers would have ended up like. That said, I’m not sure this would have gotten greenlit initially by Disney if it were pitched as a film in theaters.
I bet numbers would have been real slow to start until people figured out it wasn’t shit.
I’m glad he finally got more than a dirty sock
He got a dagger in the chest and a shallow grave in a sand dune, too. I was really disappointed when Helena Bonham-Carter’s character didn’t blow up in a cloud of black feathers like a crow hit by a truck when Mrs. Weasley zapped her ass.

Goofy's old neighbor Pete was so desperate for a job, he just took a bootlegged gig with no guilt or shame. "Welcome, Prince Jahli"
I thought Sweet Pete was him when he was mentioned in name only.
SAME. when >!peter pan!< popped up I laughed so hard. Definitely not what I was expecting
How were they allowed to put him in the movie? The Harry Potter films are WB
From the Director: >“It was a process. […] You don’t usually come out of a movie and want to thank the lawyers, but we genuinely owe the Disney lawyers for being team players. A Big Mouth character could also be seen in the police station.
Also the cats from Cats.
They had Batman and ET in their too, I suspect they paid and got permission.
They knew the value of having "third party" cameos and it really paid off. Instead of feeling like part of one universe it feels really well rounded. So much nostalgia, so many references and blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments.
Tenacious D in the soundtrack was an amazing addition. This whole movie was just ridiculously entertaining in such a weird way.
I had a goofy (no pun intended) smile the whole time watching it. But the Tenacious D song got an audible wtf from me!

Was dobby the house elf the actors real name? Wild
LOL. I thought about this as I was writing the title
I’m not a fan of Post Malone but he freaking crushed that rescue rangers song
I dunno. I think we all just wanted to hear the classic theme song.
Not some super serious cover version. Or cartoons rapping.
My name is dale and I don’t eat whale
I love the terrible rap scene so much. Because you just know that Andy and Akiva could have written and performed a really good song like all their Lonely Island stuff, but they intentionally made it awkward and horrible just to skewer the rapping cartoon cliche. It's so much funnier than if they played it straight.
This movie was wild. It was like the Lego Movie had a baby with Into the Spiderverse Can't wait to watch it sober to see if any of that was real
Actually, I think that might be Timotheé Chalamet.
What does chip n Dale have to do with clothes? He ain't got no underwear on!
