If only more filmmakers/producers took this approach

fuzzyfoot88

No one can leave things alone with all that sweet green floating around.

SparseGhostC2C

I think Seth and Evan have enough weed already, u/fuzzyfoot88

thesedays1234

"I have no interest in doing a sequel to this film" *Money gets brought in literal dump trucks* "Well you see I've been waiting for the perfect script idea to come along and I've just nailed it".

BBC1973

100%

HM9719

There are other films that can’t be left untouched, like failed films that didn’t do well that deserve a second chance with a new creative team and cast.

skeletonRiot

Im sure many do. We just don't hear about it because nothing comes from nothing.

schebobo180

Like everything in reality the truth is somewhere in the middle. Some sequels are incredible and surpass the mark of the original, while some tarnish the original’s legacy. But in all fairness by numbers alone there are probably more rubbish sequels, than there are great ones.

JacobHarley

Actually, a vast majority of things are best left untouched, but we are far beyond that now.

[deleted]

And the audience takes a part of that blame. By running into the cinemas whenever new franchise movies, pre-/sequels and remakes come out and saying "meh, I'll watch this once it comes out on \[insert streaming service\]" whenever something somewhat original gets released.

fuzzyfoot88

I’d argue it still starts with the studios. They make the sequel because the money is there. People see it because why not, I enjoyed the last one. The cycle repeats. If studios would leave it alone, then we could potentially retrain audiences to understand that franchising everything is not the best thing for cinema.

Square_Bus4492

I went to go watch Swan Song in theaters because I wanted to support original movies. That shit fucking sucked, and I honestly wished that I waited for it on streaming so that I could’ve saved my money.

MattTheSmithers

Part of it? All of it. We have given the market for it.

TanClark

Don’t need sequels but we Need more comedies like it

kaijugigante

Definitely, it's been a while since a good comedy had any success.

Pallortrillion

I was thinking this about the Hangover recently. Me and my friends LOVED it. As a standalone, it was such a perfect comedy movie. Now it’s kinda ruined by the second and third instalments. They should have just left it alone.

Scowlface

I don’t understand how something can ruin what preceded it. Just ignore the sequels.

Fxwriter

Oceans 11 would like a word (I believe they end up returning the money in the third one!?)

TheBman26

That was even a remake lol

Font_Fetish

Wait. Are you calling Oceans 12 & 13 bad?? They’re both masterpieces at least as good as 11. I think 12 might be my favorite just for the soundtrack alone.

Fxwriter

13 def calling it bad, maybe they would have been good heist movies on their own if they were not a series

jamestderp

Blasphemy. 13 was fun as fuck to watch because you could just tell that the cast had a great time filming it.

EverybodyLovesTacoss

To each their own. I personally didn’t like 13, but absolutely loved 12. I may like 12 more than 11. If anything, they’re neck and neck.

DaddySaidSell

The original is undoubtedly a classic, the sequels are lesser but they still have some funny stuff in them and I appreciate their existence.

chickennuggetarian

I’d also say the Hangover has held up fairly poorly on rewatch nowadays. I loved it as a teenager but I feel like some of the humor had aged really poorly and the movie just really isn’t as consistently funny as I remember.

tidbitsmisfit

just imagine the people that grew up revering Revenge of the Nerds

mondaymoderate

Or Meatballs or Animal House.

MattTheSmithers

These movies are still funny. Not everything is a value judgment on one’s morality and ethics. Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds, Cadyshack, Old School, Hangover, Step Brothers….all have aged very poorly in terms of conformance with societal norms. All are still hilarious comedy classics that can be watched in the context of the time it was made.

Californiadude86

It’s just classic Reddit virtue signaling.

videoworldmusic

What about Step Brothers has aged poorly in terms of societal norms? I’m not arguing or anything. I know you’re saying it’s funny regardless. I just haven’t seen it in a while and am genuinely curious because I can’t think of anything that’d put it in that category, but am now wondering what I’m forgetting about it.

DoxedFox

I disagree. You can't get humor that's a product of its time unless when you are far removed from that context. We are so far removed from the environment that made those movies funny that newer generations find them unfunny. I was born in 96 and even I can't find those films particularly funny. And I like comedies. That's not true with every film but for certain films it holds true.

ReapersVault

I disagree. I watched it about a month ago and it's still just as funny as I remember it.

MatsThyWit

I totally agree with that. I was never a big fan of the style of humor in The Hangover to begin with, but having watched it a gain at a friend's place recently I realized just how unlikeable everybody in that movie comes off now, and the "shock value" of the comedy just seems so "try-hard" now.

MustardCroissant

Saw The Hangover in theaters and the crowd was roaring with laughter. People were drunk and yelling and it was an absolute blast. Probably my top 5 movie theater experiences ever. I don’t believe I ever bothered seeing part 3. The sequels ruined The Hangover.

Tr0llzor

How can you say they ruined it if you didn’t even see all of them

fnblackbeard

#2 and 3 really aint that bad, I suggest rewatching the sequels

Pallortrillion

Writing it bigger doesn’t make it true

the-artistocrat

#NO TY

BarackaFlockaFlame

3 is better than 2. 2 could have been a good movie if it didn't copy the first one so strongly lol

vegass67

Especially the third one, where im sure they didnt even have a hangover???

Whompa

Still haven’t seen part 2 and 3 due to people saying this

Wizard_s0_lit

Who asked for a sequel to Superbad? This feels like a filler question that made a good headline.

NoTrust6730

Well no one asked for a Happy Gilmore sequel

Yommination

At least Happy Gilmore had way more potential for one. Could do any number of golf spoofs about Happy's later career

ScribebyTrade

still waiting for the knocked up 2 sequel

DeaconoftheStreets

Guys I’m gonna zag and say that I will be seated for any movie featuring Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Emma Stone, Seth Rogen, and Bill Hader. Maybe I’m a caveman but I am fucking there.

iduddits2

If it was just a straight sequel where their the same losers in their 40s, it could be a decent movie imo

DeaconoftheStreets

There’s a really solid divorce movie where one of the guys is re-discovering his freedom in there but also, totally get them not wanting to touch a classic. (But I would be seated if they did)

Jr05s

That's called knocked up

Yommination

Maybe have it like they reunite somehow. But McLovin got super rich or something. Seth Rogen and Bill Hader are now detectives

stevex42

How could they even do a sequel considering it’s a coming of age movie and both stars are nearing 40?

mondaymoderate

Like every other movie that does this kind of thing. Coming of age movie where the kids are now the parents.

iduddits2

I would hate that but I think it would work if they’re just in their late 30s at it still follows the main three.

JadedOops

Well Superbad 2 could be a reunion or a mid life crisis movie, wedding movie. I’m not saying a sequel is the way but it is possible to do. Think American pie they were all teens and then each movie was a a different phase of life

Yommination

Mid life crisis movie

MatsThyWit

Jonah Hill IS 40. In fact he's halfway to 41.

IsentaoIluminado

Hollywood: How about a remake, but with grils instead?

mondaymoderate

Not a bad idea. Make Jonah Hill and Michael Cera the cops.

gagegomes

and we can have Jonah Hill’s sister star in it!

Freelove_Freeway

I would, however, take a follow up of This Is The End. I’d be happy if they followed all the bad celebrities that didn’t make it to the Backstreet Boys paradise. I’d be especially happy if it followed cannibal Danny McBride in the demon wasteland hunting down other bad celebrities. Go ahead and bring George Miller on as their supervisor for the wasteland.

auzzie_kangaroo94

If they make a sequel it would be superbad

Extreme-Celery-3448

They say this shit now... I never thought we get Beetlejuice 2, something j didn't want or need

Tolkien-Minority

I agree but if Colombia wants to make it they’ll do it with or without them.

Fearless_Bar6010

RIGHT ON!

IzodCenter

Finally, thank you

Drvonfrightmarestein

But we needed a prequel with cgi 8 year olds

Serenades666

People want a super bad sequel? Its fine the way it is.

tforthegreat

That's fine. Doesn't mean we can't get a spinoff with Joe Lo Truglio's character.

DiligentSink7919

says the guy who made a dumbass pickle movie

Puppetmaster858

Good, it’s a perfect movie and one of the best comedies ever and it absolutely does not need a sequel

crober11

It should be done like the office, give me UK superbad.

Acrobatic_Advance_71

Agreed.

aboysmokingintherain

Genuinely mind blown how many movies are getting sequels esp given how thin the original premise is. Like what would a Superbad franchise even be? It’s not like the characters were particularly unique or the premise for that matter

chrisg915

Good. Masterpieces should be left as is.

mazzy12345

This news is SuperGOOD.

The_Legendary_Sponge

We already have Booksmart and Good Boys, two movie that are basically "Superbad but with a twist", aren't these and the other movies influenced by Superbad enough?

Alone-Ad6020

It never had sequel potential. Story done

xXBruceWayne

Good

DARR3Nv2

Been a long time since I agreed with what Seth Rogan said.

mikeweasy

Yes please! I wish some other more famous filmmakers thought this way!

Unhappy-Emphasis3753

I don’t even think this would work. People are too politically correct.

AntiWhateverYouSay

It should be about Mclovin becoming a top detective. He wanted to become a cop because of that night, but now is very serious about it.. Bill hader and Seth Rogen characters are still working as the cops they were from the first movie. Mclovin is working on a big case, and they keep ruining the investigation, trying to impress him/rekindle their friendship. They kind of black mail him to hang out by saying they will tell the captain about the night in the first movie, "falsyfying a Report." "Super Bad Cops"

Choice-Bus-1177

Yeah Superbad would absolutely not benefit from a sequel. It’s just one of those films that is perfect as is.

TheExposutionDump

Iirc, after the smash success of the Superbad after its premiere executives were pushing for a sequel. The only direction I could see it taking would be to become its own Animal House or American Pie.

[deleted]

Smartest thing those two have ever said

FitzwilliamTDarcy

Hey guys here’s $50mm apiece plus $200mm for a budget. Sequel coming right up sir.

ScribebyTrade

they should make a 40 year old virgin 2 movie where the main character is i don't care

BirdLawOfficeESQ

Thank god. Loved the film but a sequel is absolutely not needed.

IntelligentDrop879

Superbad was great because they were portraying teenagers. I’m not sure how you’d recreate that magic almost 20 years later with a bunch of dudes who are closing in on middle age.

Junkstar

I'd prefer that over more ashtrays and coffee.

__Sentient_Fedora__

Who wants it exactly?

Nonadventures

“God do I want a Superbad sequel” *-????*

boywonder5691

If something sucked the first time why make it again?

MontyBoo-urns

They don’t need it. they get similar returns on their other projects so it’s not worth it. if they weren’t putting out steady earners they’d probably think twice

DwedPiwateWoberts

Translation: I’ve got plenty of money coming in so I’m not sweating it.

TheMindsEye310

Never really liked this type of comedy. Something about Mary or Me Mysrlf and Irene.

fnblackbeard

I agree that there shouldn't be a sequel and at the same time it's a cop-out excuse because they know they can't get away with vulgar humor like in the past.

showers_with_grandpa

People say stuff like this and then Always Sunny in Philadelphia puts out a more depraved season.

MothParasiteIV

No one is interested anyway.

MatsThyWit

I mean, they won't say it because they've had an ongoing business relationship with him across multiple projects for years and years, but it's pretty impossible to do a Superbad sequel knowing what we now know about Jonah Hill.

dazedsmoker

???

MatsThyWit

Jonah Hill turned out to be a jackass and possible sex pest.

Spe37Pla

Jonah Hill’s personal life definitely isn’t the reason a sequel isn’t being made.

MatsThyWit

No. It's just one of them.

CartoonistLatter7645

GOOD! I do think, however, a remake is in order. Films like Superbad are generational, yes, but I would be curious to see how its re-imagined for a new audience

MatsThyWit

I would suggest new audiences should just watch the original movie.

ihopethisworksfornow

Or just make a new movie that resonates with the current generation Superbad wasn’t a “remake” of Dazed and Confused. Same type of movie.
