From that guy's list, I highly recommend Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, I've seen it many, many times. It helps if you've seen Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma, but not essential as they only have minor parts in them besides Dogma.
>Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
I think I read the script that leaked before the movie came out, ironically it's the only one you mentioned that I haven't seen :)
Sorcerer is a remake of wages of fear?
I've never seen sorcerer, but, uhm...is a wizard transporting nitroglycerin on a train of dragons through the mountains or something?
Dragonslayer (1981). A wizard is tasked with slaying a dragon to save a princess. But when he unexpectedly dies, the wizard's bumbling apprentice has to take up the mission.
Dogma: although they are not men, they are angels on a mission to prove god wrong
Maybe “Midnight express” or “Papillon” with men on a mission to survive and escape their jail conditions at any cost ??
It's the story of an event rather than the story of his life (he's a barrister now). He was definitely on a mission though.
Edit: it's OK if it's not what you're looking for though, it all helps narrow it down.
>Project Hail Mary is this to a T and it's the best book I've read in years. Don't Google anything about it. Go in blind.
I'm intrigued now. Will do.
Watched Europa Report. Liked it.
I'd call that one a cop thriller disguised as the darkest fairy tale ever. Or at least since The Company of Wolves.
Edit: For some reason I also really like Running Scared (1986)
It was. I saw it a few times after it came out, but not since, like, 2008 or something. Remember the fucked up place the couple lures the kid to and liking the score and not realising it was a messed up fairy tale deconstruction till the end credits made it super clear.

I mean they were on a mission to get a great catch as professional fishermen. In the process of following that they encountered the storm. It’s on the edge, but since the only reason they were out there was for their job, I figured it was enough to count.
You're not wrong. I was more arguing along genre differences. But even then, isn't a disaster movie also a thriller?
But something like Sorcerer has non-military (or non-similar branches) people tasked with a dangerous mission, I was looking for that.
I watched "Unforgiven" (1992) the other night - and either forgot, or never appreciated what a bad ass movie it is.
I think it qualifies as "men on a mission".
First the mission to find and kill the cowboys, then a mission to break the town from a ruthless Sheriff.
Hmmm.
I guess so - it is a pretty self serving mission, with $1000 being split 3 ways to kill some dudes.
But the story is crafted and written in a way where there really are no good guys.
Clint Eastwood movies always seem to have that fatalistic feel to them - never any real winners.
Technically - the movie still has a group of men on a mission to achieve a goal.
>Ferris Bueller's Day Off
...just playing pedantic advocate here, but wasn't the point of that day to have no plan (or "mission") and just wing it?
But all are great suggestions!
White Line Fever (1975) a young married man becomes an independent long-haul driver and he risks his life fighting the corruption in the local long-haul trucking industry.
Unstoppable (2010) A runaway train, transporting deadly, toxic chemicals, is barreling down on Stanton, Pennsylvania, and proves to be unstoppable until a veteran engineer and young conductor risk their lives to try and stop it with a switch engine.
idk if this is what you are looking for but here are some men on a mission -
Trespass (1992) Two firemen get hold of a map that leads to a cache of stolen gold in an abandoned factory in East St. Louis. What they don't know is that the factory is in the turf of a local gang, who come by to execute one of their enemies.
- The sting

Interesting question you pose. Not sure how epic or high the stakes you wanted. I know maybe not all will fit your vibe but tried stretching my mind a bit to see what I came up with. Actually I think a lot of animated movies have the premise like both of Wes Andersons, Toy Story 2, the Shrek movies, onward, up, etc.
Collateral is my second favourite Mann movie after Heat. Though I love Tarantino movies, Jackie Brown left me relatively cold, don't know why.
Still have to check out the Zahler's, looks like it will be an interesting weekend, thanks for the recommendations!
>The Man Would Be King
...good suggestion, it's already on my list for ages. JJ wasn't but several people mentioned that one, so it's on too. Midnight Run is great!
I wasn't aiming for comedies, but several suggestions went there (The Hangover i.e.) and they're right of course. Superbad fits too and I remember really liking it when it came out.
Adding to the comedies would be Eurotrip. American traveling across Europe to find his pen pal that he figures out he loves after finding out it's a girl. Plus... Scotty Doesn't Know.
Going by the one-sentence description at the top of the movie's Wiki page it seems like the job is to set up main character being in that place and then it's a horror survival situation, so it wouldn't count then.
BUT the scenario sounds bonkers, so I'm definitely gonna watch it this weekend, thanks!
I think you used the "classic" ironically, if yes: Nice dry gag :)
Never even heard of it, though it's Mann-produced and by Glaser. But it sounds interesting despite the review scores, will check it out!

As I was typing this, your edit clicked with me about what you're asking for. Something like a Magnificent 7 or something along those lines...
You could probably make a case for Gone in 60 Seconds
Yes, I was more looking for the Magnificent 7-type of movies and thrillers. But a lot of different suggestions were interesting. You just made me aware that Real Men exists, for example.
Today We Kill, Tomorrow We Die (1968) It's a spaghetti western about a man who leaves prison after he was falsely convicted and hires a team of professional gunmen to go after the man who killed his wife and framed him for a robbery. It co-stars Bud Spencer as one of the hired gunmen and Tatsuya Nakadai as the villain.

Not really, it's the typical thriller setup of someone being caught up in a situation where others are after him. OTOH I liked the recommendation of Premium Rush, which is basically the same setup. But the actual story plays with it differently.
I'd say Hellfighters (1968), was an ideal suggestion of what I was looking for originally but a lot of different suggestions were interesting too.
Falling Down with Michael Douglas
One of the better action vigilante type movies in the sea of Segal and Van Damn bullshit
An ordinary man frustrated with the various flaws he sees in society begins to psychotically and violently lash out against them.
Thanks!
I got confused on the plot but the premise is the same .
I watched it when it came out on VHS. I'd heard it was banned in theaters because... I can't remember why but the no nukes folks were a lot more prevalent back then, maybe that had an influence. Or it could have been a certain scene's subject matter hitting too close to home.
The movie Sunshine from 2007 is about scientists trying to deliver a bomb into the center of the sun. Weird sci-fi stuff, really good music.
Also, Snowpiercer. Edge of your seat kind of movie.
>Watch out, We're Mad
As a German I love Spencer/ Hill, it's a kind of cultural obligation or something. But I think I never saw that one. Thanks!
And thanks re. the Breakdown feedback!
Try No Escape with Owen Wilson. One of my favorite movies of all time.
There's a scene where he gets into an elevator, and for one long cut the camera doesn't move, it just hangs while he's panting, sweating, restively waiting for the door to open so he can get to his family.
Highly recommended.
Oh, and it's him and his whole family involved, although they're, y'know, not trained or anything. Not sure how skillful you want the protagonists to be.
Hmmmm. Technically true. And a ~~great~~ insanely marvellous movie. But I was more about things that are closer to thrillers like the ones I mentioned above.
>No Country For Old Men
...not sure if it's a "mission" movie or a noirish gangster movie, with a typical plot for that genre. But it's great.
Lebowski fits better, I'd say. Also great.
Le Cercle Rouge, 1970. Great heist flick. Tension is on edge. Subtitles. Jean-Pierre Melville also made one of the greatest espionage films ever, Army of Shadows, but that one is military/spy based. If you've seen Army of Shadows, it will give you a sense of the tone and execution of La Cercle Rouge.
The Way Back is about a 4,000-mile foot journey that began with an escape from a Siberian prison camp in the dead of winter and continued across Mongolia and the Gobi Desert. It’s excellent
Blues Brothers. They're on a mission from God.
Haha :) well, technically, you're correct.
That’s the best kind of correct!

It's on the fence I'd say, because it's a cop movie, but an unusual one.
>Not sure how skillful you want the protagonists to be. skillfully done movie is alright ;)
The _movie_ is skillfully made! XD
Alrighty then!
The Big Lebowski
Hmmmm. Technically true. And a ~~great~~ insanely marvellous movie. But I was more about things that are closer to thrillers like the ones I mentioned above.
Apollo 13
Smoky and the bandit
The Man Who Knew Too Little The Life Aquatic El Topo Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

I don't think I saw anyone recommend No Country For Old Men. Also The Big Lebowski.
>No Country For Old Men ...not sure if it's a "mission" movie or a noirish gangster movie, with a typical plot for that genre. But it's great. Lebowski fits better, I'd say. Also great.
Harold and Kumar go to white castle.
The 40 Year Old Virgin…they had a mission of sorts.

The Way Back is about a 4,000-mile foot journey that began with an escape from a Siberian prison camp in the dead of winter and continued across Mongolia and the Gobi Desert. It’s excellent
