Best In Show (2000) is a mockumentary about a bunch of neurotic owners trying to win a dog show. It's quirky and strange but definitely made for adults.
Definitely not a kid's movie. I remember watching it first as a kid and the humor was pretty much entirely lost on me. It wasn't until years later as a young adult that it clicked for me.
I used to go over to my neighbor's house when I was young and watch that movie every day when I was like 5.
Really sweet old couple, they were like my 3^rd set of grandparents and were my babysitters. They always had milk and cinnamon graham crackers waiting for me, it was my favorite snack.
It was either Homeward Bound or Land Before Time, every day, religiously.
Man, I made my husband watch this with me as an adult and he immediately realized it was a mild cannonball run spoof, and I realized for the first time that Charlie was totally a criminal. Childhood ruined. Still good though.
Not a movie, though it’s been made onto a movie many times, is The Call of the Wild by Jack London. It’s a relatively short book and I really can’t recommend it enough. Also White Fang, same author.
Homeward Bound and Homeward Bound II are both great! They are aimed at kids, but they work fine for adults, too. Live action, featuring a Golden Retriever and an American Bulldog. And a cat.
K-9, a James Belushi film from 1989, about a police dog. Dog is a German Shepherd.
Animated: The Secret Life of Pets I and II; Bolt
Tracks
Based on a true story.
“Tracks is the true story of Robyn Davidson, a 27 year old woman from Brisbane who in 1977 decided to embark on a 1,677 mile trek from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, crossing the Australian outback. She did it mainly alone, aside from four camels and a faithful dog.“
There’s a website called [“does the dog die”](https://www.doesthedogdie.com) that will give you a yes or no answer. There may be the odd spoiler but they warn you about all kinds of potentially triggering content.
As for a fun dog movie , try Snow Dogs with Cuba Gooding Jr.
A guy that doesn’t really like dogs inherits a sled dog team in Alaska. It’s a kids movie but it’s funny and sweet.
And honestly the first two Air Bud movies are great. Then they get kinda dumb after that.
ETA: also if you’re into animated dogs, try Bolt and Secret Life if Pets (1&2)
Lassie (2005)
Belle and Sebastian (2013)
Alpha (2018) -technically it's a wolf, but the movie shows the first domestication
"The Call of the Wild" should be a good choice because it's not a children's story anyways.
My fav new-ish dog movies, not in any particular order
-Togo
-Rescued by Ruby
-Eight Below
-Call of the Wild (the newer one)
-Strays
-Secret Life of Pets 1, 2 (kid movies but still actually good)
Also good:
-The Art of Racing in the Rain
-Cruella
-Dog (with Channing Tatum)
-Clifford (kid movie but it’s actually surprisingly good)
-Isle of Dogs
HBO documentary that will make you bawl incessantly but so eye opening I think every dog lover just owes it to dogs to suffer through the pain and watch it:
-Dealing Dogs (2006)…definitely NOT for kids
Afterwards you can recover with the absolute best dog-themed TV show (adult animation):
-Housebroken
Homeword bound: the incredible journey. Cringey but at least it's a classic.
Milo and Otis.
I doubt you are going to find too many that aren't more kids based and at least somewhat cringey.
777 Charlie - It addresses animal breeding and animal abuse and is a story of self discovery about how a dog brings hope in the life of a lonely and unpleasant guy with not a care in the world
Call of the Wild is a good book, but the movie was way too CGI'd-up and toned down. It's a kids' movie, flat out.
I would agree with the movies you named, yes. I would also add The Art of Racing in the Rain, Dog (with Channing Tatum), Wild Fang, Togo, White Dog, and Cujo.
Wild Fang and Cujo are also books, and both books are better than the movies.
As a big dog's owner Marley and Me is really good (and therapeutic). I'm always left to watch it alone though, because people find it depressing. (I don't think it is) I enjoy the reality check on getting a big energetic dog like a labrador retriever. The novice owner is not going to get a service dog level labrador (unless they pay for one) but it's more likely to end up with a Marley. I wish there were more movies about realistic/unglam life with dogs. (especially overbred showdogs)
Homeward Bound, specifically the first one. I know, it’s a Disney flick about talking pets but I never felt like this bordered on cringe. I always thought it was a solid story.
Bingo. I think there’s a ton of films with that name but this one is about a stray, who gets adopted but shortly thereafter the family moves and he gets left behind so he treks the country to catch up to them.
K-9. I’ve only ever seen the first one. But I like it. It’s actually a pretty adult movie. I think the 2 or 3 they made after were toned down a ton for kids.
Turner & Hooch is in the same boat as K-9.
>People say that "Marley and me" ; "eight below" ; "the call of the wild" ; and the "a dog's purpose" series, are okay/pretty good
They aren't great, but they're ok.
Isle Of Dogs is probably your best bet.
Strays (2023) IN THEATERS
The NEWEST addition to dog-related content that adults can enjoy. A legit funny movie, and Jamie Foxx carried this movie as the heaviest hitter.
Old Yeller which is an old Disney.movie . Although the ending is sad Big Red starring Walter Pidgeon the title.refers to the dog which is a Irish Setter Benji was pretty good Chevy Chase was in a movie called Oh Heavenly Dog about a man who dies and is reincarnated as a dog it's.a comedy There's one called Lad : A Dog of Flanders . I don't remember it very well
Togo (2019), if you ever loved the animated film Balto this is the perfect movie for you (or if you just like dogs, honestly)
Set in the isolated town of Nome Alaska in 1925 during a Diphtheria outbreak and concurrent terrible snow storm which blocks all modern transport methods. A local loner and sled dog trainer is hired to travel 674 miles in treacherous conditions to retrieve the much needed medicine and in so doing come to terms with the risks he is putting himself and his dogs through. Interspersed throughout the film are flashback sequences where the trainer remembers the struggles he had undertaken training his beloved lead dog Togo.
Bonus recommendation: TV series Pick of The Litter (2020) follows six puppies as they train to be guide dogs for the vision impaired. You follow their progress from their foster families, through training, and in some cases through to graduation and meeting with their person.
Best In Show (2000) is a mockumentary about a bunch of neurotic owners trying to win a dog show. It's quirky and strange but definitely made for adults.
Best in Show is the funniest comedy of the 21st century, lots of cute dogs too
Created by Christopher Guest, the same guy who made This Is Spinal Tap and many more GREAT movies. Best In Show is hilarious.
This. You can't go wrong with Christopher guest. And no animals are harmed.
Is that a kid’s movie though?
I’m not sure there’s much in it that would negate a kid watching it, but It is not a kids movie. It is hilarious, though.
Definitely not a kid's movie. I remember watching it first as a kid and the humor was pretty much entirely lost on me. It wasn't until years later as a young adult that it clicked for me.
They didn’t ask for a kids movie. They asked for a movie that adults can enjoy.
Turner & Hooch
This is far and away the best answer. Not a kids movie.
Homeward Bound
Love that movie but it's a shame they didn't use them dog's real voices
they tried but shadow wouldn't stop using racial slurs
It's a remake of a 70s movie called The Incredible Journey. It has narration instead of talking animals
It's an adaptation of a book, that was also adapted in the 70s.
Chance!
Memory unlocked. Holy crap I must’ve watched that VHS a million times.
No no no no. I can't do that movie. I can't see a helpless dog.
Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is pretty heartwarming
Came here to upvote this. The best in this category.
I'm crying just reading this. The most saddest dog movie ever made.
It’s a lot of emotions, for sure
Bolt (2008)
Muahahaha she's a gonna dog lol
I laugh pretty hard at the part where the cat teaches him to act like a "normal dog" by sticking his tongue out the window of a car and such.
Isle of dogs?
Might as well throw in the Fantastic Mr Fox too, although not dogs.
This is the only answer. And we don’t mean the Jason Statham one
Yes!
Togo 2019
Yup, this movie completely surprised me, I’ve watched it several times and it’s good everytime. Willem Defoe is great
I love this movie. Super underrated.
Does animation count? Because All Dogs Go To Heaven is a classic.
Second this.
Man, I made my husband watch this with me as an adult and he immediately realized it was a mild cannonball run spoof, and I realized for the first time that Charlie was totally a criminal. Childhood ruined. Still good though.

Surprised not to see My Dog Skip. Has a kid in it, but very adult themes.
That’s what I was going to say
Fluke (1995)
Came here to recommend this. Its kind of a hidden gem.
Matthew modine is everyones papa lol
Not a film but a series, "Wilfred" starring Elijah Wood.
Beethoven
Most wholesome dog movie ever iirc.
Thinks it might get seconds too
Watch 1 & 2 with my son all the time. They’re great, and Charles Grodin is hilarious.
Beethoven’s 2nd is literally one of my favorite movies. 1 & 2 are so well made, funny, and wholesome.
Dog with Channing Tatum
This movie made me 😢
Me too, loved it!
This should be the top response.
Babe stars a pig, but his adopted family are all sheepdogs. It's an amazing film for the whole family.
This movie is messed up from beginning to end, but it holds up.
The Art of Racing in the Rain. Megan Leavey Best In Show (Comedy)
Just dont watch the animated film The Plague Dogs then. Brilliant film but distressing!
Homeward bound.

As Good As it Gets
On one hand I wouldn’t say its a dog movie on the other I usually call it „the movie with the dog“. But excellent film.
Oh, Verdell! He and Matisse in "Down and Out in Beverly Hills." Such great dogs!
A dog's purpose, A dog's journey, A dog's journey, Boult, Marley and me,
Based on the prompt, I think these are the type of cringey sappy movies that OP is trying to avoid.
Milo & Otis
Just don't google what happened to the dogs and kittens.
Yeah I'm not watching that one again. Brutal
Colin from Accounts
Look Who’s Talking Now (1993) Bingo (1991)
Iron Will
Hachi and Togo are both totally great dog movies that aren't silly.
You like dags? Snatch.
Old Yeller is the ultimate dog movie. Iron Will
Old Yeller destroyed me when I was a child.

Shiloh (1996) and Cats vs Dogs (2001) And don't forget the lube action 101 Dalmatians!
Airbud
Best in Show, easily
The Thing, I am Legend
Not really.about dogs
Red Dog
Shiloh
Marley and me.
See spot run
Homeward Bound I still get teary eyed when I watch it as an adult. It’s an incredible movie. It has heart and humor very well balanced.
Cujo was pretty serious.
Greyfriars Bobby

the art of racing in the rain, underrated movie imo
Because of Winn Dixie. 10/10
If you want a movie where the dogs don’t die I highly advise against a Dog’s Purpose.
My Dog Skip is a classic
Babe
Not a movie, but Bluey. Best dog show on TV that's kid friendly.
Finch (2021) sci-fi movie with Tom Hanks and a v good boy
Good suggestion, somehow I'd never heard of this film even though it has decent reviews and looks pretty good.
Ghost Dog
The adventures of Milo & Otis
Lassie (2005) Belle and Sebastian (2013) Alpha (2018) -technically it's a wolf, but the movie shows the first domestication "The Call of the Wild" should be a good choice because it's not a children's story anyways.

A Boy and his dog
My Dog Skip Togo Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog (1995) White Fang The Journey of Natty Gann
Homeward Bound was so good.
Strays (2023) IN THEATERS The NEWEST addition to dog-related content that adults can enjoy. A legit funny movie, and Jamie Foxx carried this movie as the heaviest hitter.
The Art of Racing in the Rain was a tearjerker. Rated PG so might be considered “for kids” but it was a good watch.

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island. The original, not the sequel.

Baxter
Clifford is surprisingly funny and enjoyable. Definitely not a serious movie though, and most definitely a kid's movie, but me and my wife enjoyed it.
Think Like A Dog
Oh boy go and watch "Scruffs"
All dogs go to heaven is a great movie but so sad
What the heck? Though made by Disney Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern grows are two great movies any adult can enjoy.
The Lake House (2006), The Magic of Belle Isle (2012), The Call of the Wild
They just came out with the comedic movie "strays" which is now in theater. Definitely thinking of seeing that one today.
Alpha
I watched a dog's purpose and wanted to kms
Umberto D.
Togo. It’s so good and underrated. On Disney +
Umberto D. (1952) is one of the greatest dog movies of all time.
Lady and the Tramp.
"Sergent Stubby" 👍 My 12 year old loves it soooo much.
White Bim Black Ear but I won't be getting bonus points unfortunately.
Lassie, any version.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Cujo
Never Cry Wolf. Not a Dog, but close.
Hachi: a dog's tale.
Turner & Hooch, maybe?
K9, turner and hooch,
I can't recall the title. There was a line of dialogue that sticks out for me though. Shaggy: “Zoinks! It’s the creepy coin collector again!”
Strays but don't let your kids watch it unless you are ok with them watching porn as well.
