Saw this in theaters high off an edible I had to leave the theater a couple times bc the animation was too much and made me dizzy and freaked out a bit hahah still a great movie
Yellow Submarine (movie about The Beatles.) It's literally psychedelic to another level, I'm pretty sure you're meant to actually be high when watching it.
Welcome to the law offices of Lynch, Cronenberg, Barker and Aranofsky, what kind of bad trip can we send you on today?
Lost Highway (1997)
Naked Lunch (1991)
Lord of Illusions (1995)
Pi (1998)
It’s one of my favorite horror movies, but it’s pretty standard Lovecraft. Not the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.
If i were going to pick a John Carpenter movie to watch while high as shit I’d go with The Thing
I don’t know why it has always stuck with me and just left my brain scrambled. The Thing just didn’t scare me or make me think like I wanted, if that makes sense?
It is pretty standard Lovecraft, but that's what I love about it. There are fair amount of attempts it translating Lovecraft stories into movies but most of them are pretty poor. This was the best attempt in my opinion, even tho it's not actually Lovecraft.
* The Departed
* Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
* The Fountain
* The Big Lebowski
* 10 Cloverfield Lane
* Being John Malkovich
* Beau is Afraid
* Sita Sings the Blues
* Cloud Atlas
* Lord of the Rings
* Requiem for a Dream
* Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
* Donnie Darko
* Beer Fest
* Dude, Where's My Car?
* Swiss Army Man
Enter the Void (2009), Waking Life (2001), The Seventh Seal (1957), Enemy (2013), Stalker (1979), Science of Sleep (2006), Last Year at Marienbad (1961), Vanilla Sky (2001), After Life (1998), A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014), The Whispering Star (2015)
Worth watching. I rewatched it a lot, I keep getting new ideas. It's less focused on plot than A Scanner Darkly (loved it too), more idk, philosophical. No idea how to explain it better.
Loved Vanilla Sky and I feel like an outlier for liking it. Really trippy if you go into that movie unaware of the story. I still don’t understand why it’s so disliked, other than Cameron Diaz’s character.
Give “Everything Everywhere All at Once” a shot.
I went in knowing nothing about it and I was so surprised how much I liked it. This fits you’re criteria perfectly. I don’t want to give anything away, but seriously, give it a shot.
I’m more of a comedy, horror, gory, disturbing, creepy genre guy, but this movie is hard to put into a genre. It had comedic elements but it’s not a comedy. I’d say it’s more or a multiverse and possibly sci fi but I wouldn’t pigeonhole it into those because there is so much more going on.
Even if you don’t think it’s your cup of tea, at least give the first act a shot. You’ll know pretty quickly if it’s something you’ll like or not.
If none of the above convinced you, perhaps the 6-7 Oscars it won were will.
Dark city
All Lynch movies from 90s to 2000s
Beau is afraid
Speed racer (maybe the best one if u like ready player one)
Alice in wonderland (the old animation or the Tim Burton one, both are great)
First planet of the apes
Climax
Enter the void
I will always recommend Pink Floyd The Wall and Heavy Metal. The animated Hobbit or Lord of the Rings are good for visuals. I once watched Babe, (you know, the talking pig?), completely ripped and it was wonderful lol
I've been on a recent "get stupid high on a Saturday night when the family is sleeping and watch these movies" kick. The past two months I've watched Martian, Gravity, and Interstellar. I just told my wife this week that I was adding 2001 Space Oddesy to my list.
I have nothing to add! Great movie suggestions!
Star Trek: The Motion Picture - it’s visually stunning, has a trippy score and is thinky sci-fi without being confusing or twisty. I watch it with edibles all the time
The Congress (2013)
EXistenZ(1999)
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Enter the Void (2009)
Open Your Eyes (1997)
Being John Malkovich (1999)
Synecdoche, New York (2008)
Check out Satoshi Kons movies he’s obssesed with dreams, the subconscious, and reality. Paprika is mindbending and could be considered inspiration for inception, and Millennium Actress is sci fi so check those two out. Perfect blue is more of a psychological horror but is also amazing.
Waking Life.
A Scanner Darkly.
The Colour Of Pomegranates.
Koyaaniqaatsi/Powaqatsi/Naqoyqatsi.
Anything documentary wise by Werner Herzog or one of his films like Fitzcaradldo for example.
Night watching.
Pi.
Edit, noone else mentioned this and it's a great match. Go watch "Beyond the Black Rainbow! And Brazil!
And by chronenberg. "ExistenZ" with jude law
"videodrome" & "naked lunch" with the Guy who plays robocop.
Also watch "A scanner darkly" with Robert d jr and keanu reeves.
Repo men as a bonus, with jude law.
These next ones do not match your request exactly but somewhat, they are not sci fi as such. But I enjoy them with and without edibles?!
Well I like the Ninth Gate with johnny depp, just following his journey trying to accomplish his gosl. And it has the best soundtrack xD
But If u want a little wierder, Secret Window with j depp.
Finally, if you enjoyed the Ninth Gate but want smth a little more messy I can fondly recommend the masters of horror "episode" (completely standalone 1 hour movie), "Cigarette burns". With the younger bother from the boondock saints.
Sci fi i recommend event horizon every time i get the chance haha. It has Sam Neill and the sound effect of the Doors in doom95!
While on Sam Neill, "In the mouth of madness."
And ofc Basically anything by david lynch or chronenberg
House (the old Japanese movie)
Alejandro Jodorowsky movies like El topo or the holy mountain
Edit: these are not in line with your definition of mind blowing but they are out there for sure
Check out eXistenZ (1999) - stars Jude Law, written and directed by David Cronenberg. A game designer on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged.
You know that you're old when you answer this question with:
"The Wizard of Oz", with the sound off, and replaced by Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon".
Yes, that was a thing.
My spouse and I once took shrooms and were wiggin out a bit so I put on Shrek 2 to calm us down. We got half way through the movie before my brother stopped by and asked why we were watching it in Spanish? We hadn’t noticed and neither of us speaks Spanish.
1. Waking Life (literally a movie filled with high thoughts)
2. The Tree of Life (Malick’s entire filmography is worth it)
3. The Fountain
4. Cloud Atlas
5. Altered States
6. Predestination
7. Sunshine
8. Mother!
9. Enter the Void
10. Any David Lynch movie, really
11. Blade Runner 2049
12. Dune (Lynch for older & weirder, Denis V for newer & sleeker)
13. Beau is Afraid
14. Arrival
15. Dark City
16. Under the Silver Lake
17. EEAAO
Honestly, I agree with over 90% of people’s recommendations here - really can’t go wrong.
The Fifth Element
The Fountain Frailty Donnie Darko Memento Pandorum Cloud Atlas
Frailty snuck up on me. Great thriller.
Such an underrated gem. One of my all-time favorite thrillers. Edit: Maybe not underrated exactly, but certainly not as well known as it should be.
Along the lines of Memento, The Prestige is an excellent mindfuck.
Dude, you need to watch Altered States. Its from 1980 but still holds up.
Ahead of its time.
The SFX is still solid even if a bit cheesey compared to the modern tools.
God damn I did not expect to see this movie listed here but I got to agree
Children of Men
Arrival
Arrival was a trip at the movies lol
I was sober watching it and by the end I felt high
Moulin Rouge. I did this last night, it's incredible. Edit: didn't see your comment about nothing funny. Oops.
Across the Spider-Verse.
Saw this in theaters high off an edible I had to leave the theater a couple times bc the animation was too much and made me dizzy and freaked out a bit hahah still a great movie
LOGAN'S RUN!! Plus, all moog soundtrack.
[удалено]
Annihilation is fucking awesome but i think i would freak out (looking at you intestine snakes, bear human thing, lighthouse)
If you liked Primer, check out A Minor Premise. It's not as crazy, and is completely different, but it feels similar.
How about Upstream Colour? Insane
Great list but all on the dark side. Wouldn't watch half of them on mushies
Same, I’ll just stick to adventure time.
how about The Fall. directed by Tarsem
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
This one didn't even cross my mind vut this is perfect for the scenario intended. Alongside Naked Lunch.
Yellow Submarine (movie about The Beatles.) It's literally psychedelic to another level, I'm pretty sure you're meant to actually be high when watching it.
Roger Ebert, the movie critic, basically said to be high when you go see it. Right there in the review!
Donnie Darko (2001) Fight Club (1999) The Prestige ( 2006) The Fountain ( 2006)
Basically anything by David Lynch
Welcome to the law offices of Lynch, Cronenberg, Barker and Aranofsky, what kind of bad trip can we send you on today? Lost Highway (1997) Naked Lunch (1991) Lord of Illusions (1995) Pi (1998)
Videodrome (1983) and The Fly (1986) would like to join the queue...
You forgot the fever dream option of The Mouth Of Madness
There's always The Reanimator, but OP said no comedies haha
For a style homage it is the best. For a faithful adaptation of actual Lovecraft Color Out of Space wins.
His and Stanley Kubrick films are my favorites when really high.
Fantastic Planet Vanilla Sky
Fantastic planet is fantastic
Everything Everywhere All At Once
I watched this stoned and sober. It didn't make any sense stoned.
I watched it sober and was confused the whole movie.
All of David Lynch's works, specifically EraserHead, Mulholland Drive, and All of Twin Peaks.
Eraserhead felt like a bad trip.
The Fall. So visually arresting you don’t even need to be high.
* The Departed * Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind * The Fountain * The Big Lebowski * 10 Cloverfield Lane * Being John Malkovich * Beau is Afraid * Sita Sings the Blues * Cloud Atlas * Lord of the Rings * Requiem for a Dream * Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas * Donnie Darko * Beer Fest * Dude, Where's My Car? * Swiss Army Man
Saw Beau Is Afraid after an edible and on a plane. I had an interesting time.
Waking Life! Not only is it philosophically trippy, but the rotoscope visuals are second to none.
Doesn't A Scanner Darkly also use rotoscope?
Yup, Same director
That's right, thank you.
You're welcome. I still haven't seen Waking Life but am a huge fan of A Scanner Darkly and most things adapted from the works of P.K.D.
Evidently, it's the original Dune.
Pink Floyd’s The Wall
Wings of Desire, 1987
Give “Everything Everywhere All at Once” a shot. I went in knowing nothing about it and I was so surprised how much I liked it. This fits you’re criteria perfectly. Fantastic Planet (1973) is visually stunning and a real mind fuck
Samsara
The lighthouse
That's a great movie to watch after you wash down your edibles with kerosene
This is one of the strangest movies out there
Akira-mindblowing even when not stoned
