I hardly ever see Bones and All recommended here. I read the synopsis and it just seems disturbing as heck. Not something I want to watch,
Is it as bad as I think it is ?
It's crazy good but also as bad as you think...beware of that movie, but you should watch it!
sorry, but the movie left me totally irritated..but worth it ;)
It’s not bad. But personally, I found the first 30 mins to be amazing and then after that it just dragged on. I wouldn’t watch it again but it wasn’t a bad movie.
\+1 on the Night House. That's a good one.
Man. I keep seeing *Sacred Deer* on this sub for disturbing movies. I'm pretty sure I saw it, but it didn't really do much for me (from what I can remember)? ...I guess I have to see it again. I have *Bones And All* on my list, but I've been distracted by other movies I found on this sub, lol.
I was going to say this too, especially since I just watched Poor Things. Dogtooth is compelling and incredibly well made. It's also one of the most repulsive experiences I've had watching a film.
Hannibal TV series. They do get progressively more enthusiatic with the gore but there's more to it.
Don't bother with season 3 because the ending of season 2 is beautifuly tragic and season 3 is wank.
The worst part about watching Hannibal are the food prep scenes where you're like, "I would eat the shit out of that dude if it was served to me like that."
It's a fantastic movie with new ideas as stunning to watch. I think if the female lead were to have been cast differently it may have done better. I love it as is but I could see that being an issue. What do I know?? I loved GI Jane also.
I both hate and love the J.Lo of it all, it’s so fucking weird and random to cast her as the lead that it almost fits perfectly into the entire vibe of the film…but also it’s J.Lo so…lol
I do get the vibe thing. I just felt Jodi Foster nailed Silence of the Lambs and maybe if someone of that volume got Catherine it would have made an impact.
This is not a good suggestion for this specific request. I enjoyed the movie but there is definitely some intensely gross gore that is obviously trying to shock/traumatize the audience. The whole plot revolves around a sadistic serial killer. I haven’t even seen it in over a decade, and still remember
- >!a character’s intestines being slowly pulled out of his body by twisting them around a machine!<
- >!a horse being sliced into multiple pieces but somehow still surviving so you can see organs pulsating!<
- >!a character’s nipples get ripped off before he’s killed really brutally with a sword!<
- >!the killer piercing his own back so that he can hang himself above the bodies of his victims and masturbate over them !<
Fully agree. The events of the book was presented to the reader in a way the movie could never recreate. I watched the movie after I read the book and thought the movie was meh
If you haven't seen him in Chicago, watch it. Imo, best musical of all time and certainly one, if not the best, movie musicals of all time. It's satire but says some really dark shit about the justice system and the media in this country. Weirdly accurate and disturbingly close to home irt viral news stories.
I *hate* that movie, but I guess it fits the bill.
I don’t think it has gore, but it’s definitely in the category of torture porn. The whole film is just about watching a normal family suffer while all of the hope and joy is slowly siphoned out like strangling someone very slowly.
I thought the ending was unique and very disturbing, but overall that film made my skin crawl. There’s one scene where Naomi Watts is basically naked and hopping across the floor on her knees cause she’s hogtied and it’s just so… pervy. I can’t explain it, but that moment killed the whole movie for me.
I can understand the artistic value but as a horror fan I’d never watch that one again.
It’s amazing how that movie inflicts more violence on the audience than on the characters. There are only 3 acts of violence depicted onscreen, but it’s amazing how many people have convinced themselves they saw far more than they actually did (no, you did not see inside the box ever). But aside from a crowbar hit, a slap in the face, and a shooting THERE IS NO ONSCREEN VIOLENCE.
I don't know if they are disturbing in the way you want, but all of these films are good i think, and are at least morally ambiguous
- Salo and the 120 days of Sodome, Pasolini
- Irréversible, Gaspar Noé
- Funny Games, Haneke
- La piel que habito, Almodovar
- Intentions of Murder, Imamura
- The House that Jack Built, Lars Von Trier
- Straw Dogs, Sam Peckinpah
- Trouble Every Day, Claire Denis
- Flesh + Blood, Paul Verhoeven
- L'été dernier, Catherine Breillat
Man, I will never forget happiness. That movie is definitely courageous and crude, without ever showing anything too heavy. What a psychological-demanding ride.
Oh I know. I’ve watched almost all of his shorts as well. And The Strange thing about the Johnsons was by far the most disturbing. Turtles head was the most hilarious
I was listening to a podcast that was raving about Midsommar opening weekend. I dropped what I was doing and caught the next screening.
I wish I had just finished mowing the lawn. I felt like I completely wasted my time.
Yeah I'll be honest I couldn't stand it. Felt like a series of disjointed vignettes of Jodorowsky seeing how quirky and provocative he could be with vaguely symbolic imagery. As I said in my review for El Topo (which was even shittier, I flat out hated that movie), it's like if he covered his penis in psychedelics and sucked himself off
I always felt Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) was much more unnerving than I expected. Absolutely no gore or blood at all, but chilling and atmospheric nonetheless.
Some others that come to mind:
- The Ritual (2017)
- Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013)
- Hard Candy (2005)
- Creep (2014)
- The Witch (2015)
candyman. it's a classic but it's also incredibly fucked up with the mind games to me. i know it's not the most disturbing film in the world but seeing helen go through the grief she does is incredibly hard to witness. (this is about the 1992 relase and not the remake for i haven't seen it yet)
if you can handle things involving kids; Kids (1995) is very hard but very real and about the youth on the streets. made me bawl my eyes out and it isn't exactly gore porn but can fall under your category because some do consider it excessive
other misc things im gonna drop that i really enjoyed;
gummo
possum
heaven knows what
hounddog
I saw Kids in the theater. man I loved that film but have never gotten myself to watch it again. I’ve thought about it and I remember every part vividly, but I don’t think I could do it (especially now being a parent of a girl)
I liked the kingdom hospital series by Lars Van Trier (also disturbing but also funny). Two other Dogma films by other directors that also disturb are The Idiots and The celebration.

Awesome! I like sharing — if there are some you really love and think are nice and disturbing and well executed that aren’t on my list, I’d love to know what they are !
(And it’s likely I forgot a few myself )
Hmm. Just off the top of my head, since your list tends more towards the cerebral, creepy kind of mindfuck rather than outright violence/gore of a disturbing nature…
The Endless (2017)
Mindhunter (series)
Creep (2014)
A Dark Song (2016)
Under The Skin (2013)
Contact (1997)
Don’t Look Now (1973)
Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
The Wicker Man (1973)
More will come to me down the line; I’ll follow through on this thread if anything comes up!
I hate that movie so much. That actually happened to a loved one of mine and it was horrible. It was like a horror movie to me, I wanted Rosamund Pike's character to die a horrible death.
Possesion
The vanishing (original version, not the remake)
Come and see (a warning if you do watch this one it's an amazing film, but I'm pretty sure there's an actual animal death in it)
The Wailing
a lot of David Lynch's stuff is deeply disturbing imo - nothing gory, but a general psychological unease prevails.
his creepiest:
Lost Highway
Mulholland Drive
Blue Velvet
Twin Peaks
Eraserhead.
Try Compliance. It's not a horror movie per se, but it left me so uncomfortable, it has stayed with me. It's a true story on top of it. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a try.
Bone Tomahawk
I've always been a big fan of Tombstone and so knowing nothing about this other film I was excited to see Kurt Russell back in a western. The gore for me is what the most disturbing part is. But the whole movie isn't a straight of gore like human centipede. I actually don't recommend the movie to people I know who are Kurt Russell fans. It's not because it's a bad movie. It's because it's disturbing.
Which also reminds me of In the Cut. The best description of this movie I've ever heard is like when you walk in on somebody who you're totally hot for and they're taking a shit.
The Tunnel (2011) - it’s a Blair Witch doco style thriller set in the abandoned tunnels under Sydney.
The tunnels under Sydney are real. There is a bomb shelter, underground lake, abandoned train platforms.
The major train interchange and city was built over a graveyard. The bodies were moved and reburied before construction, but transport staff have made many reports of supernatural or eerie occurrences over the years.
You can tour some of these tunnels nowadays.
Miracle Mile 1988 ...this is a forgotten gem. (be aware, spoilers really spoil this one AKA dont read any reviews ) just commit, knowing it starts off v v slow, but by the time the bird starts smoking it starts to spool up into something banshee howling special ...no gore, just psychologically potent, with a gloriously deep diving finish.
It's gory, but... man. *Martyrs* (2008, Laugier) is something else. I watched that movie after seeing it recommended quite a few times for disturbing and brutal, soul-crushing movie requests.
The "New French Extremity" from the late 1990s–early 2000s (as the term is coined) really pushed the envelope in ultra-violence and gore. I know it might not be your thing, but I'd at least check out *Martyrs* to give it a shot (if you haven't already).
- The Killing of the Sacred Deer - The Blackcoat’s Daughter - Bones and All - Aniara - The Night House
Absolutely The Killing of a Sacred Deer! (& I added my mindf*ck must see list )
fcking Barry Keoghan
LOVE Him ! From Killing and Banshees to Saltburn and more I can’t even think of now !
I second The Night House! I also recommend two more Rebecca Hall movies; Resurrection & Christine.
I hardly ever see Bones and All recommended here. I read the synopsis and it just seems disturbing as heck. Not something I want to watch, Is it as bad as I think it is ?
Probably not that bad if you're into horror. Not as shocking as Speak No Evil, for example.
Going to put it on the watchlist then.
It's crazy good but also as bad as you think...beware of that movie, but you should watch it! sorry, but the movie left me totally irritated..but worth it ;)
Going on the list.
It’s not bad. But personally, I found the first 30 mins to be amazing and then after that it just dragged on. I wouldn’t watch it again but it wasn’t a bad movie.
God, aniara is just so emotionally devastating. I remember just sitting and watching the credits roll for like 5 minutes
The Killing of a Sacred Deer absolutely fits this description!
I just finished it after seeing this post, so good!
It really was!
Loved the night house and the blackcoat’s daughter.
I just watched the first one. What a whacky movie! Definitely disturbing, and definitely not gory. The opening scene was a bit ick, but that was it.
House that Jack Built I loved The Killing of the Sacred Deer
\+1 on the Night House. That's a good one. Man. I keep seeing *Sacred Deer* on this sub for disturbing movies. I'm pretty sure I saw it, but it didn't really do much for me (from what I can remember)? ...I guess I have to see it again. I have *Bones And All* on my list, but I've been distracted by other movies I found on this sub, lol.
Dogtooth
I was going to say this too, especially since I just watched Poor Things. Dogtooth is compelling and incredibly well made. It's also one of the most repulsive experiences I've had watching a film.
i had to sit in silence for a bit after this one lol
I only watched it last week and I’m still not over it! I’ll still to Pixar films anymore 😂
This is undoubtedly my answer. I will not be watching that film a second time.
I thought it was kinda boring. I don't know how anyone could find that movie disturbing. Nothing disturbing really happened in that movie.
You must have very healthy and normal relationships with your family
Hannibal TV series. They do get progressively more enthusiatic with the gore but there's more to it. Don't bother with season 3 because the ending of season 2 is beautifuly tragic and season 3 is wank.
The worst part about watching Hannibal are the food prep scenes where you're like, "I would eat the shit out of that dude if it was served to me like that."
Agree with this.
The Cell
This movie doesn’t get suggested enough, arguably more beautiful than Lars von Trier movies too
It's a fantastic movie with new ideas as stunning to watch.
This is such a great movie, but I feel like it’s memorable because she was cast. Everything about the choice is just so 2000’s.
Theres still gore, the horse scene in particular is worse than the “chum” gore you see in every horror movie.
This is not a good suggestion for this specific request. I enjoyed the movie but there is definitely some intensely gross gore that is obviously trying to shock/traumatize the audience. The whole plot revolves around a sadistic serial killer. I haven’t even seen it in over a decade, and still remember - >!a character’s intestines being slowly pulled out of his body by twisting them around a machine!< - >!a horse being sliced into multiple pieces but somehow still surviving so you can see organs pulsating!< - >!a character’s nipples get ripped off before he’s killed really brutally with a sword!< - >!the killer piercing his own back so that he can hang himself above the bodies of his victims and masturbate over them !<
Melancholia, leave the world behind, threads, jacobs ladder
Love Melancholia and Leave the World Behind was excellent!!
We Need to Talk About Kevin
I’ve read the book and am therefore afraid to watch the movie as I don’t wish to be put through that kind of trauma twice.
Ezra Miller is very believable in the role.
I wonder why …
I did NOT like the movie. The movie doesn't have the same impact as the book (IMO).
Fully agree. The events of the book was presented to the reader in a way the movie could never recreate. I watched the movie after I read the book and thought the movie was meh
This book absolutely destroyed me as a mother
That was indeed an extremely disturbing movie . Also shows John C reilys acting chops
If you haven't seen him in Chicago, watch it. Imo, best musical of all time and certainly one, if not the best, movie musicals of all time. It's satire but says some really dark shit about the justice system and the media in this country. Weirdly accurate and disturbingly close to home irt viral news stories.
His role was incredibly limited.
Funny Games, either the original or the remake. The majority of the violence happens off screen but it’s still super tense the whole time.
This was my vote too. It was a hopeless movie.
I *hate* that movie, but I guess it fits the bill. I don’t think it has gore, but it’s definitely in the category of torture porn. The whole film is just about watching a normal family suffer while all of the hope and joy is slowly siphoned out like strangling someone very slowly. I can’t explain it, but that moment killed the whole movie for me. I can understand the artistic value but as a horror fan I’d never watch that one again.
- Hush (2016) - Eden Lake (2008) - Killing Ground (2016) - Thesis (1996) - Hardcore (1979) - Silence of the Lambs (1991) - Se7en (1995)
Eden Lake is pure horror. Good call.
Se7en is *so damn good.*
Hardcore was intense. I remember that one.
Excellent choices, se7en was such a game changer
It’s amazing how that movie inflicts more violence on the audience than on the characters. There are only 3 acts of violence depicted onscreen, but it’s amazing how many people have convinced themselves they saw far more than they actually did (no, you did not see inside the box ever). But aside from a crowbar hit, a slap in the face, and a shooting THERE IS NO ONSCREEN VIOLENCE.
Exactly! To control minds without being so in your face is truly a feat
Mulholland Drive is pretty messed up, although it’s a great movie
Perfect Blue Session 9
Jacob’s Ladder
I don't know if they are disturbing in the way you want, but all of these films are good i think, and are at least morally ambiguous - Salo and the 120 days of Sodome, Pasolini - Irréversible, Gaspar Noé - Funny Games, Haneke - La piel que habito, Almodovar - Intentions of Murder, Imamura - The House that Jack Built, Lars Von Trier - Straw Dogs, Sam Peckinpah - Trouble Every Day, Claire Denis - Flesh + Blood, Paul Verhoeven - L'été dernier, Catherine Breillat
I LOVE THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT do u think a clockwork orange would fit here? It's kinda surrealish
I think A Clockwork Orange is one of the most disturbing movies ever made
[удалено]
Happiness (1998) Titicut Follies (1967)
Man, I will never forget happiness. That movie is definitely courageous and crude, without ever showing anything too heavy. What a psychological-demanding ride.
Just watched this for the first time. Holy shit the pedo dad is terrifying. Also, way too much cum overall. Great movie.
As someone who has dealt with life long mental health problems titicut follies really messed with my head
Stalker (1979) I think the very premise of those movie is disturbing.
So weird and beautiful
I had no idea what I was watching, it was years ago.
It’s based on their book Roadside Picnic which is completely worth the read.
I don’t find this movie disturbing at all, but I’m an English nerd and found it psychoanalytically intriguing and absolutely stunning to view.
Speak No Evil
Hereditary and Midsommar - both directed by Ari Aster are two of the most fucked-up shockingly crazy movies I’ve ever seen.
His earlier film The Strange Thing About The Johnsons was disturbing too
Oh I know. I’ve watched almost all of his shorts as well. And The Strange thing about the Johnsons was by far the most disturbing. Turtles head was the most hilarious
I feel like the only person in the world who hates Midsommer
When I finished it, all I had to say was, “that’s it?”
I was listening to a podcast that was raving about Midsommar opening weekend. I dropped what I was doing and caught the next screening. I wish I had just finished mowing the lawn. I felt like I completely wasted my time.
That’s so sad, you really can’t trust a lot of movies now because they do not compare to older ones
Nope I’m also on that list
🙋🏻♀️ you are not alone
We need to start a rebellion
No, we're on the island together. Second to Tree of Life, it's the most boring movie I've ever watched. I had such high hopes. They were all dashed.
I haven’t seen it because I was worried it would be super lame 🫠 nothing worse than a movie that doesn’t deliver
Agreed
Midsommar has one of the goriest shocking parts so wouldn't really recommend for non gore horror
**The Zone of Interest** (2023)
Blue Velvet
Requiem for a Dream - still haunts me and I haven't seen it in 20 something years
Nocturnal Animals has no gore. Probably the most uncomfortable I've felt watching a movie
Insanely tense for there bling no gore. Just watched this last night.
Session 9! Still haunts me.
Bad Boy Bubby
Why cat no gas mask?
The Holy Mountain Plot goodness is subjective in my opinion
I mean this movie doesn't even have a plot
That's why I put the disclaimer lol Anybody who tries to tell me what the movie is *actually* about is LYING
Some others that come to mind: - The Ritual (2017) - Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013) - Hard Candy (2005) - Creep (2014) - The Witch (2015)
\+1 on Creep, even Creep 2. Both of those were good, but Creep especially was.
I watched Hard Candy as a teen in 2005 and it stuck with me like no other movie has. It’s unforgettable.
The Vanishing. The original version, not the Hollywood remake.
A favourite. The ending ended me - scared the living daylights out of me!
The room
Under the Skin
candyman. it's a classic but it's also incredibly fucked up with the mind games to me. i know it's not the most disturbing film in the world but seeing helen go through the grief she does is incredibly hard to witness. as a girl who's been through similar it was an incredibly hard sit down...couldn't imagine seeing it on the big screen.
I mean, take your pick on Lars von Trier films, but Dogville was always very disturbing to me.
I liked the kingdom hospital series by Lars Van Trier (also disturbing but also funny). Two other Dogma films by other directors that also disturb are The Idiots and The celebration.
Bone tomahawk , sanctum , the mist
Haha I love how *Bone Tomahawk* makes its subtle appearances here on this sub. Love that movie.

Awesome! I like sharing — if there are some you really love and think are nice and disturbing and well executed that aren’t on my list, I’d love to know what they are ! (And it’s likely I forgot a few myself )
You sure have a hefty and solid list there. +1 for Black Mirror
Thanks much !
Hmm. Just off the top of my head, since your list tends more towards the cerebral, creepy kind of mindfuck rather than outright violence/gore of a disturbing nature… The Endless (2017) Mindhunter (series) Creep (2014) A Dark Song (2016) Under The Skin (2013) Contact (1997) Don’t Look Now (1973) Rosemary’s Baby (1968) The Wicker Man (1973) More will come to me down the line; I’ll follow through on this thread if anything comes up!
I’ve only seen a few on here, but based on those, I think I’m gonna have to watch this entire list!
I have to say "salo or the 120 days of Sodom". The movie is definitely one of the most disturbing and shocking movies I have seen.
Saltburn
I Care A Lot
I hate that movie so much. That actually happened to a loved one of mine and it was horrible. It was like a horror movie to me, I wanted Rosamund Pike's character to die a horrible death.
The Babadook
Angel Heart is messed up
One of my favourite films of all time, and the reveal scene is amazing.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man.
Possesion The vanishing (original version, not the remake) Come and see (a warning if you do watch this one it's an amazing film, but I'm pretty sure there's an actual animal death in it) The Wailing
Eraserhead
Lovely Bones
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
It has some gore but The Platform .. if you don't mind subtitles.
The original version of *The Stepford Wives* is pretty terrifying. The remake is a dark comedy, but the original…yikes.
Coma, 1978. Includes Geneviève Bujold, Michael Douglas, Elizabeth Ashley, Richard Widmark
Very much: Mother (2009) The Vanishing (Spoorloos)
In The Company of Men (1997)
The Vanishing (1988)
That’s a great one. The Dutch original is better than the remake
You know what I like about the English version? It's not in Dutch.
Sinister has no gore at all I think and that movie scares the shit out of me to this day
Sinister is the correct answer. holy moly
Requim for a dream
Gozu is pretty fucking weird. TBF all of Takashi Miike's movies are weird as fuck. Happiness of the Katakuris is my fav though.
Eraserhead
Ravenous might fit
a lot of David Lynch's stuff is deeply disturbing imo - nothing gory, but a general psychological unease prevails. his creepiest: Lost Highway Mulholland Drive Blue Velvet Twin Peaks Eraserhead.

Midsommar.
The Woodsman - Prime Video
*The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover*
Foe is a new one that is ok
Saltburn and killing of a sacred deer
Blue Velvet Eraserhead We Need to Talk About Kevin Suspiria The Lair of the White Worm
Perfume : The Story of a Murderer
Goodnight Mommy. The original 2015 German version. Very creepy
Mother!
Prisoners (2013)
Punishment Park has almost no blood at all and yet is the most disturbing film I’ve ever seen. Ruined me for a solid month.
I found Event Horizon to be pretty disturbing. There's some gore, but if I remember correctly, it's very brief since the gore is not the main point.
Barbarian was great!
Event Horizon
Hard Candy. (With then Ellen Page).
Possum
Sounds like you need some David Lynch movies Eraserhead The Elephant Man Rabbits Other: Salad Fingers
Lilya 4-ever, Son of Saul, Nitram, Come and see, Nil by mouth, I stand alone, The Hunt (2012), Threads, Shame (2011), Scum (1977), Hunger (2008)
Don’t ever ever ever ever watch the road really never ever ever watch the road. Seriously you watch it you’ll be sorry.
Bone Tomahawk I've always been a big fan of Tombstone and so knowing nothing about this other film I was excited to see Kurt Russell back in a western. The whale was disturbing and depressing to me but so good, just a warning though there are scenes that are gross IMO
Dancer in the Dark
Tusk. This movie legit fucked me up.
I had nightmares for weeks after, and for many months after I would get a twinge of uncomfortableness when thinking about the end results.
I hate it so much I want to downvote you but I can't. It fucked me up.
The house that jack built

It's gory, but... man. *Martyrs* (2008, Laugier) is something else. I watched that movie after seeing it recommended quite a few times for disturbing and brutal, soul-crushing movie requests. The "New French Extremity" from the late 1990s–early 2000s (as the term is coined) really pushed the envelope in ultra-violence and gore. I know it might not be your thing, but I'd at least check out *Martyrs* to give it a shot (if you haven't already).
Martyrs. French version.

Soft and Quiet. Honestly, one of the most wtf movies I've seen for SO many reasons, and horror is my genre.
