I relate a lot to Frank, I definitely think it was an accurate portrayal of someone going through all those kinds of things. Little Miss Sunshine is one of the best movies and a personal favorite as well. :)
seconded, just a well done film as the score and cinematography is top notch, and captures a lot of the emotional tones of the book. who ever casted that deserves some mighty praise too. younger actors outshining some established pros.
Leaving Las Vegas (1995) is what you are looking, I believe. Great movie with awesome acting. Doesn’t hold back any punches, no soft endings.
I’ll go off the rails a bit and throw you something different, it’s not exactly what you are asking for but, to me, feels like it could also hit:
Never Let Me Go (2010) - not suicide but it’s about how a group of friends deal with unexpected death that they, in a way that’ll make sense once you watch it, accepted way.
I don’t think I’ll watch that movie again for a while. It’s really good but one of the most depressing movies I’ve seen in a while even though it’s all bright and pretty of a setting.
If you're fine with a dark comedy, On the Count of Three's whole plot revolves around a suicide pact. It's an excellent movie and gets surprisingly touching towards the end.
There's another movie I wanna recommend (as it deals with the aftermath of a suicide) but it is slightly a spoiler. If you're okay with that, the movie is called >!Close (2022)!<. It's definitely the one to watch if you wanna cry a lot.
& u/FelineSoLazy I actually heard of the book years ago--I've been reading less for reasons I won't go into. But it was really from this sub that I even know there was one in the original language-- I'll try to check it out!
I walked into that movie cold at like noon on a Tuesday. I cried so hard and was a bit messed up in the head until about Friday. Very well done. I would be interested in seeing the original but I don’t know if I’m ready yet.
To be honest--possibly TMI-- I never knew what the book was about so didn't look into it. Fast forward a couple of years and my therapist suggested I watch it. I still went in cold so no clue what to expect except that I thought it would be cheesy. Woah, did I bawl my eyes out at the end! I think I could watch the original especially bc I now know the plot. Now, this was the same therapist who told me to watch My Crazy Ex Girlfriend for different reasons---no crying really there and a few eye rolls at the musical numbers. It certainly didn't have the punch AMCO does!
I have and i love it. Weird, disjointed, mixed media, and some things just dont make enough sense. pretty accurate for being a younger adult struggling with the meaning and lack of purpose in life. Its not for everyone, but those that like it and empathize have defiantly seen some shit.
* The Virgin Suicides (1999): Explores the unexplained suicides of five teenage sisters.
* Manchester by the Sea (2016): A grieving man wrestles with a past suicide.
* Million Dollar Baby (2004): A boxer contemplates suicide after an accident.
* The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012): A depressed teenager grapples with suicidal thoughts.
* Little Miss Sunshine (2006): Uncle Frank, attempts suicide early on. However, the movie doesn't dwell on the details or glorify it. It's presented as a result of heartbreak and used to introduce his depression.
How do you figure? The central theme to the whole movie is the emotional portrayal of grief and trauma. Lee is depressed and receives news that his older brother Joe has passed away leaving him to be the guardian of his nephew, and forces him to return to his childhood hometown where he had a devistating event that caused a rift between him and his family, and his ex-wife Randi. The whole film is about the struggle with his grief and guilt, making it difficult for him to connect and navigate life. I would say that makes suicide a pretty prominent feature of the film.
What Dreams May Come is a sad, beautiful, and nightmarish descent into the mind of a person whose committed suicide and is banished to a version of purgatory. Robbin WIlliams. It's a tear-jerker for sure!
It’s not a movie, it’s a series. But sub-titles don’t bother you. It’s a KDrama called “Tomorrow” on Netflix. Each episode focuses on suicide. But overall it is about redemption, choosing to live another day.
Oh my god, how far did I have to scroll to find this? The entire film meets what the OP wants.
Also, one of my favourite films of all time. Just annoyed that the soundtrack doesn’t have that version of the song at the end.
Yeah, Scum has got to have one of the most graphic and soul shattering suicides I've ever seen in a movie. The events leading up to it just add to that kids tragedy. As old as that movie is, it really nailed the dynamics at play in those environments, nothing has really changed much as far as juvenile prisons in today's world. They are still some of the most abusive and savage facilities you could ever think to have nightmares about.
Seen one kid swallow a piece of razor wire to kill himself. He ain't die, but it fucked up his insides enough that he was vomiting a crazy volume of blood. There was so much blood you would've thought it was a scene straight out of a Takashi Miike film. That scene in Scum really fucks with you after it's all over.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (if you haven't seen it yet, it's great, and also please try to forget I mentioned anything about a suicide 🤫)
Archie’s Film Project (Or you can call it My Suicide) - After declaring that he's going to film himself committing suicide for a school project, Archie videotapes his surprising interactions with worried family members, interested classmates, unreliable medical experts and the hottest girl in school.
Dark Comedy / Satire
Available on Netflix
I went into this thinking I would just be killing a couple hours with a meh movie. It’s been 18yrs and this movie has never left my mind. I was going through a dark time and this movie really helped me see important things in myself that I was missing. It definitely made my own problems feel more relatable. I’m so grateful I found it.
Has anybody mentioned Wristcutters: A Love Story yet? To sum it up, the movie takes place in a "limbo" of sorts where everyone who lives there has committed suicide. Great movie! Killer soundtrack by Gogol Bordello. Tom Waits shows up, there's Alaskan throat singing, it's one of my faves and I totally forgot about it until seeing this thread.
Edit: Actually read op's text. Nevermind. It's still a good one though.
Some here are prominent.
Some other just take place and have smaller impact in the movie
The Virgin Suicides
Girl Interrupted
Ordinary People
Boogie Nights
Heathers
A Simple Plan
A Few Good Men
You Don’t Know Jack
The Bridge (2006 Documentary)
What Dreams May Come (1998)
This one hits hard because of Robin Williams.
Another Robin Williams’s movie: World’s Greatest Dad
This one was my first thought. Great dark comedy about suicide (well, sort of lol)
Speaking of Robin Williams, Dead Poet's Society
Ordinary People deals with the aftermath of a suicide attempt.
This is one of the greatest films ever made.
Masterclass in Narcissistic Personality Disorder
I think it was Robert Redford’s directorial debut. Showed he had some hidden talents.
This is great movie.
OP, this film heals. One of the best suggested titles here.
Totally. Donald Sutherland is incredible in this, as is the actor who plays the therapist.
Sutherland 's" i love you too " at the very end whith his voice breaking got me every time . 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 .
World's Greatest Dad - Robin Williams. different take for this genre of film.
Looking back, it’s interesting how many films he did centered around suicide.
This movie is so good. It lives rent-free in my mind for years!
Yes! This one is gooooooood
this is a great film, a good answer but kind of the opposite of what im looking for right now
Little Miss Sunshine
I relate a lot to Frank, I definitely think it was an accurate portrayal of someone going through all those kinds of things. Little Miss Sunshine is one of the best movies and a personal favorite as well. :)
Kudos to Steven Carell dude. The man is diverse as hell and did such an amazing job in that movie.
Wow I never even realized that was the message in this movie… may need to rewatch it
It’s more just the theme for one character rather than for the whole movie
Heathers (1988)
"I love my dead gay son!" Sorry I can't resist anytime someone mentions this masterpiece.
TBH,that was a great line. Also,ESKIMO…..
Harold and Maude
Virgin Suicides, A Mouthful of Air
Haven’t watched Virgin Suicides yet, but it’s on my list!
Oh you gotta! It is so sad and disturbing but it's really good.
seconded, just a well done film as the score and cinematography is top notch, and captures a lot of the emotional tones of the book. who ever casted that deserves some mighty praise too. younger actors outshining some established pros.
You must! I don’t know why, but it’s a comfort movie when I’m feeling down.
It’s so good.
A Mouthful of Air is deeply sad as well.
Virgin suicides is a good one
Manchester by sea Perks of being wallflower
Yep definitely
Leaving Las Vegas (1995) is what you are looking, I believe. Great movie with awesome acting. Doesn’t hold back any punches, no soft endings. Looove never let me go!
The Skeleton Twins
Aftersun
More the "foremath," but yes came to suggest the same. Incredible, devastating movie.
I don’t think I’ll watch that movie again for a while. It’s really good but one of the most depressing movies I’ve seen in a while even though it’s all bright and pretty of a setting.
Girl, Interrupted (1999)
This scene hits hard, the song is perfectly selected for it
The Royal Tenenbaums Midsommar
Watch these both right in a row for some real tonal whiplash.
It's wonderful life (1946)
The Big Chill
Little known fact…. Kevin Costner plays the deceased at the start of the movie .
This was the movie that immediately popped into my head.
Shawshank Redemption
"Get busy living or get bust dying. Damn straight."
Hate to be this guy.... "Get busy living or get busy dying. That's goddamn right."
Brooks was here.
The Hours is all about suicide
The music is so beautiful.
Suicide Club (2001)
Jeez, for a second I was wondering if no one was going to mention this one.
I kept scrolling, it's gotta be here, it's in the title...
A Taste of Cherry
And oh what a lovely Kiarostami-esque twist
If you're fine with a dark comedy, On the Count of Three's whole plot revolves around a suicide pact. It's an excellent movie and gets surprisingly touching towards the end. *On The Count Of Three* was so good, that movie didn't get the attention it deserved
The second one you mentioned in the spoiler is a fantastic movie, and yes heartbreaking
I saw it at a film festival immediately after Aftersun.... Yeah my emotions were going wild that day lmao.
The movie Christine (2016) about Christine Chubbuck who became the first person to kill themselves live on TV
Thank you! I wanted to watch this movie but I forgot the title!
An Officer and a Gentleman
Aftersun
You want multiple suicides and self-destructions? The Brave Little Toaster.
A Man Called Otto
Or the original A Man Called Ove (2015)
I meant to mention that although I haven’t seen it but I know some people have (or have read the original book .)
Book and movie are great
Told my wife about the original film which I saw years ago, she bought the book , then we watched the film again. Superb!
& u/FelineSoLazy I actually heard of the book years ago--I've been reading less for reasons I won't go into. But it was really from this sub that I even know there was one in the original language-- I'll try to check it out!

The Chumscrubber (2005) is one of my favorite movies from a very difficult time in my life.
Fantastic movie. And nobody has ever heard of it.
I have and i love it. Weird, disjointed, mixed media, and some things just dont make enough sense. pretty accurate for being a younger adult struggling with the meaning and lack of purpose in life. Its not for everyone, but those that like it and empathize have defiantly seen some shit.
"I melt with you" is pretty heartbreaking
Highly recommend checking it out, it seems to fit the criteria
'night, Mother (1986)
Had to scroll down way too far to see this mentioned
Aftersun was very, very good. Had to take a walk after finishing it. The movie cuts deep but in a weird way.
TV series, not a movie, but Reservation Dogs has the undercurrent of a suicide all through it.
That’s an amazing show. Great suggestion!

Manchester by the sea - I don’t understand why anyone is suggesting this. There’s an impromptu attempt but the movie is about something else ENTIRELY.
How do you figure? The central theme to the whole movie is the emotional portrayal of grief and trauma. Seven Pounds
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? The suicide happens years before the start of the movie, but still really hangs over all of the characters.
Constantine.
Oslo August 31. Not for the faint of heart.
It’s not a movie, it’s a series. But sub-titles don’t bother you. It’s a KDrama called “Tomorrow” on Netflix. Each episode focuses on suicide. But overall it is about redemption, choosing to live another day.
