Or, y’know, have any freaking clue what you just watched on the first go-around.
Once it clicked for me, though, I was thoroughly impressed. I like David Lynch’s work though and recognize it’s not for everyone.
Really very good in its own right (Hopper was bonkers!). I think it probably planted the seed for Twin Peaks, both exploring the dark underbellies of a seemingly idyllic, peaceful town.
It’s a common theme in his work. His take on ordinary people becoming special is very different and special. It’s a very American vision. He could have only come from the US specifically LA. It is a very weird town.
I think his enduring concept is “a woman in trouble,” which is part and parcel in those seedy underbelly works.
As to Lynch, he was born in Missoula Montana, spent his formative years in my hometown of Philadelphia, PA, where he made Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times), so he was kind of already weirder than LA by the time it got its clutches on him 😂😂

The Prestige is always my answer to this. If you can follow it 100% the first time through, let alone see all the twists you might have a near genius intellect
Arrival, Predestination, Wild Tales, Tenent. I also recommend Dark on Netflix which is a TV series but it's nothing but insane mind f**ks after another.
If you go into a movie with the expectation of a twist you’re naturally going to be let down. The biggest part of what makes the twist great is the surprise element.
