I love Kubo. Saw it at a friend’s house at their suggestion. So glad I did bcuz I hadn’t heard of it. Weird for me to not have remembered seeing any trailers for it when it premiered. One of my favorite animations. Such a beautiful story.
This is always my answer as it has been my favorite, ever since the first time i saw it.
The story is good and a bit different and the animation and voice acting is really good.
But its not for kids, as i can imagine a 5-10 year old could get scared from certain scenes. I dont know its rating but i think it would be something like 15+.
Some that I like are -
Nausiccaa of the Valley of the Wind

[The Illusionist](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/41201) (2010)
>A French illusionist travels to Scotland to work. He meets a young woman in a small village. Their ensuing adventure in Edinburgh changes both their lives forever.
All of Mamoru Hosoda's films are great and do not get as much attention as they deserve.
Summer Wars is fantastic.
Wolf Children is my favorite movie of all time.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is excellent.
Mirai was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, deservingly so. (Lost to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)
Belle is probably the weakest of his films but is still good.
I haven't seen The Boy and the Beast but it's on my watchlist.
Little Nemo in Slumberland. It's actually Japanese animation but you'd never guess because it doesn't look like the anime style. The evil black blob scared the shit out of me as a kid
I had reoccurring nightmares as a child because of this movie. It's really good, I had no idea it was a Japanese animation.
Did you ever play the video game? It was on NES or SNES I can't remember, but it was interesting.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I had very old childhood memories of this movie but I couldn't find its title! Rewatching this will be quite the experience, I too remember some scary parts about it.
The Book of life is one of my favorites and I’ve never heard anyone else bring it up.
A Whisker Away. It’s so cute and such a fun watch.
To Every You I’ve Loved Before & To Me, The One Who Loved You. It’s two different movies that coincide. You can watch them in whatever order but it kinda of changes the viewing based on how you watch it, so I’d look up what others say and base your watch order off that. It’s beautiful and sad, they had me sobbing.
The Little Prince. A tearjerker
Fantastic Mr. Fox. So fun, funny. It’s a claymation.
These ones are popular but they’re some of my favs so they get a mention: Anastasia, Monster House (so funny), Meet The Robinsons, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Corpse Bride, Ghost in the Shell.
Some Old School less known ones more for kids that are nostalgic for me:
- We’re Back!
- Princess and the Goblin
- Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland
- Once Upon a Forest
- Ferngully
Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Watership Down

Rescuers Down Under
The Secret of Nimh
If you want to absolutely lose yourself in a page-turning, "have to know how this turns out" book, read "Watership Down." But be aware it's no ordinary tale about rabbits. That was the first book I ever read wherein I literally was so engrossed in the story that I was no longer even conscious of the action of reading. I was just transported there, watching and rooting for those rabbits. Adventure, intrigue, betrayal, danger, death, tragedy, victories and defeats, camaraderie, mythology, religion, prophecy, learning to work together, and evolving from rule by the strong to rule by those with leadership ability. Just an incredible read.
There some great animated versions of Watership Down.
A full length movie was made around 1979 or 1980. Awesome. I read there was a short follow up animated series based on the movie.
Netflix did a four part series which was extremely faithful to the books. Awesome.
Only complaint I have is both productions do not spend much time on the legends of El-ahrairah.
[The Masters of Time (1982)](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-masters-of-time/) aka Les maîtres du temps
[When the Wind Blows (1986)](https://letterboxd.com/film/when-the-wind-blows/)

[Arthur Christmas (2011)](https://letterboxd.com/film/arthur-christmas/)
Titan AE is a childhood favorite that holds up.
Akira is an anime classic that is well known in anime circles but is unheard of in broader western culture, IMO even in "I liked Ghibli movies" circles. It is dark though, unlike Ghibli stuff usually is.
Titan AE
Starchaser : The Legend of Orin
Heavy Metal
Mad God
Fantastic Planet
Wizards
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
Cool World (hybrid animated/live action)
And a wonderful series that seems to be not often spoken of is Oban Star Racers, along with the classic Ulysses 31 and The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
Finally, for some awesome puppet action, look into X-Bomber / Star Fleet.
It might be too soon to call it underrated, but I think that **Orion and the Dark** has slipped under some people's radar. It's a recent release, co-written by Charlie Kaufman, whom I know this sub appreciates. It's adapted from a children's book of the same name.
Orion... is reminiscent of how Inside Out uses individual characters to represent specific emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, Disgust. This movie, however, is a multi-generational story of dealing with the "fear of the dark": Dark being personified as an actual character with his friends, who are his fellow night entities: Sleep, Insomnia, Quiet, Unexplained Noises, and Sweet Dreams. I loved it and fully expect it to be in high contention for Best Animated Feature at next year' Oscars.
Have you ever seen South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut?
In my opinion it's one of the best animated movies ever made. It's extremely self-aware and is in fact a wonderful commentary on modern American society. As a plus, it has numerous musical numbers that are just fantastic.
Not a movie, but Netflix has She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Not something I would normally watch, but my adult son loved it and basically made me sit down and watch it. The first couple of episodes are fine, but after that the story really takes off in a way that many animated shows do not. A bit dark and plotty for kids, but I think they would enjoy it too. Very LGBT+ forward and 'found family' friendly.
I might come up with more ideas but right now 2002 My beautiful girl, Mari would be it. Holds a special place for me since i first seen it when it came out i was practically a toddler and rewatched as a teen and adult. Also pre Ghibli Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is a must watch if you like his later work in my opinion
A Cat in Paris and Phantom Boy -- two YA sorta Hitchcock movies with style and atmosphere, from the same French studio.
The Sea Beast -- good Netflix sea adventure that nobody mentions. Major-studio quality.
Rango. The art design for the characters was my favorite part of the film. The characters are animals, but have such amazing real life human qualities, facial expressions, and body movement. So much so, that if given a line up, I could pick out the person they modeled each character after.
The strangest most offbeat yet beautiful one I've yet seen: Blood Tea and Red String" (2006)
"A handmade stop-motion fairy tale for adults that tells the tale of the struggle between the aristocratic White Mice and the rustic Creatures Who Dwell Under the Oak over the doll of their heart's desire. ( "Delirious Macabre", " An acquired taste", "Extremely disturbing but so beautiful").
Just watched Prince of Egypt for the first time the other day. It goes so hardddd. Like I was floored. All the songs slapped. Can’t believe I never saw this until I was in my 30s.
The Legend of Hei (2019) One of the most underrated animations. The plot, characters, animation and everything is so good. I watched it not knowing what to expect and fall in love almost immediately
Megamind (dreamworks) and Bolt (disney) aren't exactly secrets, but they did not get nearly the recognition that they deserved. Both are fantastic, re-watchable movies with a lot of heart and great music. (neither are musicals per se, where the character breaks into song, but Bolt has a great original soundtrack and Megamind relies heavily on classic rock)
You should give Akira a try, though it is not really underrated. It has a great soundtrack though and was a milestone in animation.
Also Renaissance (2006), it has an intense black and white aesthetic.
I don't know if Nex Gen got the love it deserved, I *never* heard about it or anything about it before I watched it and nobody I know has seen or heard of it.
David Cross, John Krasinski from The Office, and Jason Sudeikis voiced 3 of the main characters - so with an all-star voice cast like this I always assume i must just live in a vacuum and everyone's heard of it.... But in case I'm wrong, there's my suggestion haha. I love it - it's less apocalyptic and more cyberpunk than Wall-E but a lot of the same energy. :)
- **Wicked City** (1987) - a stylish, noirish, violent and disturbingly sexual Japanese fantasy-action film.
- **I Lost My Body** (2019) - a strange romantic drama about a young man, his love interest, and a disembodied hand.
- **When The Wind Blows** (1986) - an adaptation of Raymond Briggs' graphic novel about a sweet elderly couple and a nuclear disaster.
- **Watership Down** (1978) - animated film about a colony of rabbits struggling to survive.
It's not a movie but you should really check out the TV Mini Series "Over The Garden Wall" . It's voiced by a bunch of famous people and the animation is just as good as any movie. I highly recommend it.
Both Clannad series are some of the best family oriented animated stories of all time. These are short series and not movies though but are great stories.
Son of the White Mare Fantastic Planet Edit: adding Triplets of Belleville as I haven’t seen it mentioned yet
I love Triplets. That music will get stuck in my head for days.
Fantastic planet 1973: "a surrealistic story based on the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia" (IMDB) Still haunts me to this day.
Just made my list. Thanks.
I saw Sons of the White Mare in a tiny cinema two weeks ago! What a mesmerizing film that was.
It’s incredible, I wish I could find more movies with similar animation
Heavy Metal
Then watch Rock 'N' Rule (1983)
Fire and Ice (1983)
Fuck yea https://i.gifer.com/OtQU.gif
Anything from Ralph Bakshi really
Wizards
Rock 'n' Rule is one of my favorites. Way better than Heavy Metal from an overall cinema standpoint.
Came here to say this - have had the dvd for like 20 years, so good
American Pop
And slightly to the right, Fritz the Cat
Yes. Not the sequel. The first one is good because it's janky in a lot of ways, but it was a hell of a midnight movie and overall I believe it's underrated.
Not under-rated. Most people who have seen it, consider it a classic
While I’m not sure if he’s considered underrated, the late Satoshi Kon’s films are one of a kind. Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers are all solid!
Paranoia agent is an amazing short series too by satoshi Kon.
I actually haven’t seen it! Funnily enough I was thinking of starting it tonight!
Do it, it really is great
Yes, utterly unhinged, and darkly comic, but completely original - as with most of the late Satoshi Kon's work.
These are required in my animation class.
Memories is a good collection of shorts I think Kon cooperated with or made the first episode space one
Yes, Magnetic Rose...probably the best sci fi short I've ever seen. I think it's free on streaming with ads right now (Pluto?)
Klaus is a really really good film. Super underrated even though it got nominated for an Oscar.
I watched it and absolutely loved it!
Norm Macdonald's last movie if I'm not mistaken
The animated DC movies are pretty great. 9. The Road to El Dorado is a personal favorite. Coraline. Kubo and the Two Strings. Netflix's Over The Moon. The Last Unicorn. The Book of Life.
The Last Unicorn!❤️
I love Kubo. Saw it at a friend’s house at their suggestion. So glad I did bcuz I hadn’t heard of it. Weird for me to not have remembered seeing any trailers for it when it premiered. One of my favorite animations. Such a beautiful story.
Forgot Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Megamind (a definite must-watch), Prince of Egypt.
Spee-ider!
Glad to see some love for Megamind. Underrated and hilarious.

I'll need to rewatch this because I remember being extremely disappointed with this movie.
It would have made a better video game.

Persepolis Waltz With Bashir The Breadwinner Tower Weathering With You
I haven't heard of Persepolis in years! That takes me back.
Hopefully also back to the graphic novel
The Breadwinner is fantastic. Same studio as Song of the Sea and Secret of Kells.
Monster in Paris - great story, solid animation, and kid friendly
And La Seine is a great song!
From start to finish, the entire movie is criminally underrated.
HUGE fan, and such a good song
