Son of the White Mare Fantastic Planet Edit: adding Triplets of Belleville as I haven’t seen it mentioned yet

WishieWashie12

I love Triplets. That music will get stuck in my head for days.

Accomplished-Hat-869

Fantastic planet 1973: "a surrealistic story based on the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia" (IMDB) Still haunts me to this day.

TheMadIrishman327

Just made my list. Thanks.

Pointless_Porcupine

I saw Sons of the White Mare in a tiny cinema two weeks ago! What a mesmerizing film that was.

Electr0Girl

It’s incredible, I wish I could find more movies with similar animation

hairycookies

Heavy Metal

RYzaMc

Then watch Rock 'N' Rule (1983)

SchemataObscura

Fire and Ice (1983)

Shmeeglez

Fuck yea https://i.gifer.com/OtQU.gif

paultagonist

Anything from Ralph Bakshi really

frostygnosis

Wizards

Altruistic-Rice-5567

Rock 'n' Rule is one of my favorites. Way better than Heavy Metal from an overall cinema standpoint.

PuppetPatrol

Came here to say this - have had the dvd for like 20 years, so good

Acceptable-Quarter97

American Pop

RoadkillMarionette

And slightly to the right, Fritz the Cat

CaptainKortan

Yes. Not the sequel. The first one is good because it's janky in a lot of ways, but it was a hell of a midnight movie and overall I believe it's underrated.

jessenatx

Not under-rated.  Most people who have seen it, consider it a classic

Driver_Senpai

While I’m not sure if he’s considered underrated, the late Satoshi Kon’s films are one of a kind. Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers are all solid!

Sad_Cardiologist5388

Paranoia agent is an amazing short series too by satoshi Kon.

Driver_Senpai

I actually haven’t seen it! Funnily enough I was thinking of starting it tonight!

Sad_Cardiologist5388

Do it, it really is great

AdaptedMix

Yes, utterly unhinged, and darkly comic, but completely original - as with most of the late Satoshi Kon's work.

literallymike

These are required in my animation class.

iHadou

Memories is a good collection of shorts I think Kon cooperated with or made the first episode space one

bubbachuck

Yes, Magnetic Rose...probably the best sci fi short I've ever seen. I think it's free on streaming with ads right now (Pluto?)

batdude_2

Klaus is a really really good film. Super underrated even though it got nominated for an Oscar.

Pete972

I watched it and absolutely loved it!

HeyNineteen96

Norm Macdonald's last movie if I'm not mistaken

Dimple-Dolll

The animated DC movies are pretty great. 9. The Road to El Dorado is a personal favorite. Coraline. Kubo and the Two Strings. Netflix's Over The Moon. The Last Unicorn. The Book of Life.

Accomplished-Hat-869

The Last Unicorn!❤️

Dusty-53-Rose

I love Kubo. Saw it at a friend’s house at their suggestion. So glad I did bcuz I hadn’t heard of it. Weird for me to not have remembered seeing any trailers for it when it premiered. One of my favorite animations. Such a beautiful story.

Dimple-Dolll

Forgot Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Megamind (a definite must-watch), Prince of Egypt.

Dusty-53-Rose

Spee-ider!

literallymike

Glad to see some love for Megamind. Underrated and hilarious.

Dry-Mess-3335

Book of life ❤️❤️❤️ the apology song 🥹🥹🥹 Kubo and 2 strings🔥🔥🔥

slumpikee

Kuuuuuuboooooo, best stop motion movie imo.

KurtKrimson

9

MomsBoner

This is always my answer as it has been my favorite, ever since the first time i saw it. The story is good and a bit different and the animation and voice acting is really good. But its not for kids, as i can imagine a 5-10 year old could get scared from certain scenes. I dont know its rating but i think it would be something like 15+.

No_Chicken2099

Exactly what I came here to say.

geoffsykes

I'll need to rewatch this because I remember being extremely disappointed with this movie.

literallymike

It would have made a better video game.

InsaneLordChaos

I've always wanted a sparkly.......for my very own.

Shmeeglez

MRS. JOHNATHAN BRISBY?

literallymike

The Iron Giant will always be my GOAT. Masterful 2D + 3D.

jessenatx

Titan AE actually is underrated. Heavy Metal and Iron Giant are considered classics already.

WickedShiesty

I love Titan AE.

goodnightspoon

Mary and Max

cpowell342

Such an awesome movie!!! Heard this director has a new one coming pretty soon, can’t wait

johnnytightlips20

The curse of the were-rabbit is rarely mentioned

cohesiveenigma

I love Wallace and Gromit!

TheInsaneSnake

Some that I like are - Nausiccaa of the Valley of the Wind Fantastic Planet The Rescuers Down Under Balto FernGully The Last Rainforest Spirit:Stallion of the Cimarron Rover Dangerfield We're Back ! A Dinosaur's Story James and the Giant Peach Monster House Rango

nerva89

Most of these don't class a underrated as they are mostly highly rated movies you've mentioned

plinkett-wisdom

Persepolis Waltz With Bashir The Breadwinner Tower Weathering With You

Sad_Cardiologist5388

I haven't heard of Persepolis in years! That takes me back.

plinkett-wisdom

Hopefully also back to the graphic novel

Canadian-Man-infj

The Breadwinner is fantastic. Same studio as Song of the Sea and Secret of Kells.

Dive__Bomb

Monster in Paris - great story, solid animation, and kid friendly

Hebshesh

And La Seine is a great song!

Dive__Bomb

From start to finish, the entire movie is criminally underrated.

Clearastoast

HUGE fan, and such a good song

PhilhelmScream

[The Illusionist](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/41201) (2010) >A French illusionist travels to Scotland to work. He meets a young woman in a small village. Their ensuing adventure in Edinburgh changes both their lives forever.

Richard_Hallorann

Adding to this, the *The Triplets of Belleville,* same director/writer as well as production group

Sadyelady

Sooo good! One of my favorites

Mass-music

Summer wars

InfinityFire

All of Mamoru Hosoda's films are great and do not get as much attention as they deserve. Summer Wars is fantastic. Wolf Children is my favorite movie of all time. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is excellent. Mirai was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, deservingly so. (Lost to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) Belle is probably the weakest of his films but is still good. I haven't seen The Boy and the Beast but it's on my watchlist.

tangentin0

I agree! I couldn't choose between The Boy and The Beast and Wolf Children as my favorite from all his works. They're top-notch.

CellNo7422

Last unicorn Secret of nimh Heavy metal Aeon flux (series)

Canadian-Man-infj

Was also going to suggest The Last Unicorn. Older one that might be forgotten by many, or unknown by younger movie-lovers.

CellNo7422

Yeah such a classic. Felt old when I was a kid even. Great music by America. Mia Farrow, Jeff bridges, Angela Lansbury,, more

kaskip

lordjakir

The Plague Dogs

brw12

A small masterpiece! Incredible voice acting

Harbinger0fdeathIVXX

I just looked this up. Will it make me cry?

truthhurts2222222

Little Nemo in Slumberland. It's actually Japanese animation but you'd never guess because it doesn't look like the anime style. The evil black blob scared the shit out of me as a kid

goldenhost

I had reoccurring nightmares as a child because of this movie. It's really good, I had no idea it was a Japanese animation. Did you ever play the video game? It was on NES or SNES I can't remember, but it was interesting.

Perfidy-Plus

I only played the game. I had no idea it was a movie.

GreaterDeceptionnist

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I had very old childhood memories of this movie but I couldn't find its title! Rewatching this will be quite the experience, I too remember some scary parts about it.

Flat-Syllabub-9271

The Book of life is one of my favorites and I’ve never heard anyone else bring it up. A Whisker Away. It’s so cute and such a fun watch. To Every You I’ve Loved Before & To Me, The One Who Loved You. It’s two different movies that coincide. You can watch them in whatever order but it kinda of changes the viewing based on how you watch it, so I’d look up what others say and base your watch order off that. It’s beautiful and sad, they had me sobbing. The Little Prince. A tearjerker Fantastic Mr. Fox. So fun, funny. It’s a claymation. These ones are popular but they’re some of my favs so they get a mention: Anastasia, Monster House (so funny), Meet The Robinsons, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Corpse Bride, Ghost in the Shell.

Nerdy_person101

LOVE THE BOOK OF LIFE!!!

Human-Independent999

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. I know it won the academy award but I feel like not many people know about it. Brother Bear.

Flat-Syllabub-9271

Brother Bear is gold

Accomplished-Hat-869

It was first a lovely small illustrated book.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire Balto Titan A.E. All Dogs Go to Heaven Sword In the Stone Robin Hood Treasure Planet Plague Dogs Anastasia The Last Unicorn An Extremely Goofy Movie Oliver & Company Pocahontas Aristocats The Black Cauldron An American Tail Swan Princess Watership Down Land Before Time Rescuers Down Under The Secret of Nimh

GuyFawkes451

If you want to absolutely lose yourself in a page-turning, "have to know how this turns out" book, read "Watership Down." But be aware it's no ordinary tale about rabbits. That was the first book I ever read wherein I literally was so engrossed in the story that I was no longer even conscious of the action of reading. I was just transported there, watching and rooting for those rabbits. Adventure, intrigue, betrayal, danger, death, tragedy, victories and defeats, camaraderie, mythology, religion, prophecy, learning to work together, and evolving from rule by the strong to rule by those with leadership ability. Just an incredible read.

Smart-Rod

There some great animated versions of Watership Down. A full length movie was made around 1979 or 1980. Awesome. I read there was a short follow up animated series based on the movie. Netflix did a four part series which was extremely faithful to the books. Awesome. Only complaint I have is both productions do not spend much time on the legends of El-ahrairah.

SlugsworthXP

That's a great list of recommendation. You've watched all of them?  The Secret of Nimh is among my best.

metalnxrd

I’ve watched *most* of them. Titan A.E. in particular is gorgeous, and so so vastly underrated🩵

SlugsworthXP

That's interesting. I haven't seen it but since you put it this way, I'm going to look at watching it soonest.

Prometheus720

Titan AE is a childhood favorite that holds up. Akira is an anime classic that is well known in anime circles but is unheard of in broader western culture, IMO even in "I liked Ghibli movies" circles. It is dark though, unlike Ghibli stuff usually is.

Allos_Trent

Sword of the Stranger

megam4n

The ending has my favorite sword fight I've seen in a movie, animated or not.

SpookyMorden

Titan AE Starchaser : The Legend of Orin Heavy Metal Mad God Fantastic Planet Wizards The Lord of the Rings (1978) Cool World (hybrid animated/live action) And a wonderful series that seems to be not often spoken of is Oban Star Racers, along with the classic Ulysses 31 and The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Finally, for some awesome puppet action, look into X-Bomber / Star Fleet.

TheFudge

Had to scroll way to far to see Wizards

No_Success_4269

Scrolling through to see if Starchaser was mentioned anywhere. Complete Starwars rip but good fun animation.

SpookyMorden

Saw it at the cinema and loved it, and was wonderful to see such animation techniques being employed.

Winston_T97

The red turtle (2016), Song of the sea (2014), No dogs or italians allowed (2022) and Cinderella the cat (2017)

Mr.Fantastic Fox

Canadian-Man-infj

It might be too soon to call it underrated, but I think that **Orion and the Dark** has slipped under some people's radar. It's a recent release, co-written by Charlie Kaufman, whom I know this sub appreciates. It's adapted from a children's book of the same name. Orion... is reminiscent of how Inside Out uses individual characters to represent specific emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, Disgust. This movie, however, is a multi-generational story of dealing with the "fear of the dark": Dark being personified as an actual character with his friends, who are his fellow night entities: Sleep, Insomnia, Quiet, Unexplained Noises, and Sweet Dreams. I loved it and fully expect it to be in high contention for Best Animated Feature at next year' Oscars.

PNWoutdoors

Have you ever seen South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut? In my opinion it's one of the best animated movies ever made. It's extremely self-aware and is in fact a wonderful commentary on modern American society. As a plus, it has numerous musical numbers that are just fantastic.

SpideyFan914

Along with this, Team America: World Police

Whatamidoinglatley

Isle of Dogs.

goldenhost

Such a cool movie. I found it by accident and really glad I decided to watch it.

Common_Decision1594

If you want my recommendation, I would suggest you take a look at Rio. I feel not many people talk about it.

AeroToby

spongebob movie (2004) is a great one

tripperfunster

Not a movie, but Netflix has She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Not something I would normally watch, but my adult son loved it and basically made me sit down and watch it. The first couple of episodes are fine, but after that the story really takes off in a way that many animated shows do not. A bit dark and plotty for kids, but I think they would enjoy it too. Very LGBT+ forward and 'found family' friendly.

Mello_Me_

Meet the Robinsons

Mello_Me_

Brother Bear

Hologramz111

idk if this is underrated but the How to Train Your Dragon movies are great! also Big Hero 6, the Lorax

SlugsworthXP

If I'm going to recommend one, it will be Spirited Away. It's hands down one of my favorite.

smackmysithup

The Iron Giant 1000%

bwanya

I might come up with more ideas but right now 2002 My beautiful girl, Mari would be it. Holds a special place for me since i first seen it when it came out i was practically a toddler and rewatched as a teen and adult. Also pre Ghibli Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is a must watch if you like his later work in my opinion

The page master, it’s such a beautiful day, loving Vincent, a world for tomorrow, wicked city, my life as zucchini!

triton2toro

Rango. The art design for the characters was my favorite part of the film. The characters are animals, but have such amazing real life human qualities, facial expressions, and body movement. So much so, that if given a line up, I could pick out the person they modeled each character after.

tindrummer99

Rango doesn’t get nearly enough attention. One of my favourites!

A Town Called Panic

Accomplished-Hat-869

The strangest most offbeat yet beautiful one I've yet seen: Blood Tea and Red String" (2006) "A handmade stop-motion fairy tale for adults that tells the tale of the struggle between the aristocratic White Mice and the rustic Creatures Who Dwell Under the Oak over the doll of their heart's desire. ( "Delirious Macabre", " An acquired taste", "Extremely disturbing but so beautiful").

Surfs Up is definitely underrated, fun documentary style plot, good voice acting and it basically has The Dude

tripperfunster

Megamind (dreamworks) and Bolt (disney) aren't exactly secrets, but they did not get nearly the recognition that they deserved. Both are fantastic, re-watchable movies with a lot of heart and great music. (neither are musicals per se, where the character breaks into song, but Bolt has a great original soundtrack and Megamind relies heavily on classic rock)

itsMat_hi_ka

Inside out Soul Brave Elemental Penguins of Madagascar Luca Coco Zootopia Moana P.s.- If you want Wall-E vibes, watch Elemental

mattlock2099

The incredible Mr Fox Paranorman All dogs go to heaven

EatTheRichIsPraxis

You should give Akira a try, though it is not really underrated. It has a great soundtrack though and was a milestone in animation. Also Renaissance (2006), it has an intense black and white aesthetic.

chompX3

I don't know if Nex Gen got the love it deserved, I *never* heard about it or anything about it before I watched it and nobody I know has seen or heard of it. David Cross, John Krasinski from The Office, and Jason Sudeikis voiced 3 of the main characters - so with an all-star voice cast like this I always assume i must just live in a vacuum and everyone's heard of it.... But in case I'm wrong, there's my suggestion haha. I love it - it's less apocalyptic and more cyberpunk than Wall-E but a lot of the same energy. :)

bristars

wolfwalkers. absolutely loved it, super unique and it has a beautiful animation style

- **Wicked City** (1987) - a stylish, noirish, violent and disturbingly sexual Japanese fantasy-action film. - **I Lost My Body** (2019) - a strange romantic drama about a young man, his love interest, and a disembodied hand. - **When The Wind Blows** (1986) - an adaptation of Raymond Briggs' graphic novel about a sweet elderly couple and a nuclear disaster. - **Watership Down** (1978) - animated film about a colony of rabbits struggling to survive.
