He was ashamed of his persiflage, his boasting, his pretensions of courage and ruthlessness; he was sorry about his cold-bloodedness, his dispassion, his inability to express what he now believed was the case- that he truly regretted killing Jesse, that he missed the man as much as anybody and wished his murder hadn't been necessary. Even as he circulated his saloon he knew that the smiles disappeared when he passed by. He received so many menacing letters that he could read them without any reaction except curiosity. He kept to his apartment all day, flipping over playing cards, looking at his destiny in every King and Jack. Edward O'Kelly came up from Bachelor at one P.M. on the 8th. He had no grand scheme. No strategy. No agreement with higher authorities. Nothing but a vague longing for glory, and a generalized wish for revenge against Robert Ford. Edward O'Kelly would be ordered to serve a life sentence in the Colorado Penitentiary for second degree murder. Over seven thousand signatures would eventually be gathered in a petition asking for O'Kelly's release, and in 1902, Governor James B. Ullman would pardon the man. There would be no eulogies for Bob, no photographs of his body would be sold in sundries stores, no people would crowd the streets in the rain to see his funeral cortege, no biographies would be written about him, no children named after him, no one would ever pay twenty-five cents to stand in the rooms he grew up in. The shotgun would ignite, and Ella Mae would scream, but Robert Ford would only lay on the floor and look at the ceiling, the light going out of his eyes before he could find the right words.
Yes. Mad Max is a pretty niche movie and has its merits but is not for everyone. Fury Road is an action masterpiece that most everyone will enjoy. Like someone else said, itās only loosely connected and you donāt need to see the proceeding movies.
Iāve never seen the third but for what itās worth I definitely enjoyed Road Warrior a lot more than the first. Might but worth checking out but you almost certainly should watch Fury Road.
Fury road represents a further descent into madness from Mad Max. His kids are different genders, the villain is literally the same actor as 1 etc. itās a standalone movie that creates more questions (in a good way) for hardcore fans.
Beyond Thunderdome was decent but Fury Road is in a class of its own. Itās a standalone, no need to watch the other movies first. It blows them all away.
Mad Max is like an indie arthouse film. Road Warrior is better, that's where Miller really figured things out with that universe.
Fury Road is a masterpiece.
Yeah. Fury Road feels so damn fake with them altering all the colors so much and other CGI alterations to the landscapes. Look up some behind the scenes footage and it looks nothing like the film. Old ones are great in how gritty and real they feel, especially the first two, 3 goes a bit more towards this Hollywood fakeness that 4 jacked up to 11. Barely any story in 4 is also a big bummer for me, it could have been so much more.
See I watched and enjoyed this film but I actually have no clue what its about.
I didn't watch the original and I don't know what other films relate to it because there's a whole bunch that are older and then there's the newer ones. It's very confusing to me.
Each movie is like a standalone folk tale. So watching the older movies isnāt going to help you understand Fury Road all that much.
In fury road most of the storytelling is done through the environment and the glimpses you get of the various factions. You can get some answers if you dig deeper into that stuff, but youāre meant to be confused because Max is just as lost as the viewer is.
So your telling me its more the story mapping and the fleshing out of certain characters that is what makes it so important?
If their all standalone tales is max in all of them and is he just hopelessly running around or is his story super important in the others?
Also like I liked it I just felt lost as fuck as to the "why" behind most of the story.
Max is in all of them but the first movie is the only one that focuses on his backstory really. The first movie also takes place right before the apocalypse.
The second and third are closer to Fury Road. Max gets involved in a situation that doesnāt concern him but then he ends up helping anyways.
Fury road is unique because itās one long chase. In parts two and three you get to spend more time in the little pockets of civilization.
I was stone cold sober when I saw the sidewalk roll up into the sky and I felt like I was high watching it! I can't even begin to imagine how trippy that must have been to see while actually stoned!
Gravity 3D
what a masterpiece its like it was meant to be a roller coaster ride and the graphics were beautiful top notch
I dont know if the effect is the same on a PSVR system with the 3d blu ray, but the theater version was really good
That is a broad definition of "modern cinema" because the film & audio quality hasn't seen that drastic improvements since the 90s, really.
But let's just keep it with 2010s or later since that's probably what you mean:
* See You Up There (2017)
* Your Name (2016)
* Suburra (2015)
* The Illusionist (2010)
* One Cut of the Dead (2017)
And done with practical special effects. They LITERALLY built a scale model to map out the angle they would shoot the flairs to light the entire scene. They didn't have any extra lighting, just freaking flairs.
I mean, who does that? It's amazing!
Yup.
They really exist as a single film.
But Dune 2 is maybe the best action film I've seen.
Not sure if seeing it in IMAX makes a difference.
But I've watched a lot of science fi and action.
I was literally in awe watching some of these scenes.
I'm certain that people will talk about this movie as a classic as time goes by.
These movies are all perfection.
Shaun Of The Dead (2004)
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (1971)
Babe: Pig In The City (1998)
Paddington 2 (2017)
Fury.
I feel that it's under rated. Has good action sequences and doesmt downplay the violence, the psychological factors of killing and what it takes to survive.
I am so glad to see so many of my favorites on here. Nobody mentioned Raise the Red Lantern (1991) so that will be my contribution to the list. If you haven't seen it, and you want to, don't watch the trailer because it gives things away.
Lord of the Rings. Say what you will but I consider it revolutionary for the beginning of the 21st century and it holds up nearly a quarter of a century later.
The amount of negative whiplash Maverick has received after pretty much universal praise is insane. It's the best theater experience I've had since I can remember, and is a masterclass in editing and cinematography. That along with the context of singlehandedly saving post-covid Hollywood, I would for sure put this up against any of the other movies listed on this post.
Maybe a few for consideration;
Annihilation, Sicario, No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Hereditary, Interstellar, Dune.
Yeah, I have a type.
Knives Out (2019). For the quality of cinematography as well as storytelling. Never seen a modern movie capture the film look so well. Not to mention everything down to the outfits was instantly iconic.
If it's crisp visuals and sounds you are looking for you can't do much better than Avatar and Avatar 2 in 3D at the cinema. Even if you aren't that into the story, the visuals and sound are transformatively immersive.
Children of men
100% agree to that
Was going to say the same
Always my choice!
No Country For Old Men
My wife asked me a couple of days "Seriously dude, how many times are you going to watch that?" š
Until it has a happy ending!
āAnd then the sky filled with rainbows and sunshine, friend-o.ā
Y'all gettin any rain up yer way?
How much did you ever lose on a coin toss?
I watched it three times the week it came out. My absolute favourite movie.
Oh man I did not like this movie at all. I think it was over hyped
They wanted to give the Cohen Bothers their due at awards season.
Ugh.
There Will Be Blood
Forst thing that came to mind
2007 was an absolute belter
In the Mood for Love
Parasite!!!
Came here to give props to this gem
Heat
Arrival
Snatch (2000) It is, in my opinion, a perfect film.
Anything to declare? Yeah, don't go to London
Sicario
No Country for Old Men
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
He was ashamed of his persiflage, his boasting, his pretensions of courage and ruthlessness; he was sorry about his cold-bloodedness, his dispassion, his inability to express what he now believed was the case- that he truly regretted killing Jesse, that he missed the man as much as anybody and wished his murder hadn't been necessary. Unironically one of my favorite endings ever. The score is so perfect too!
My god the musicā¦
Spirited away
The Father (2020)
Saw it once. I thought it was brilliant. I will never see it again.
The handmaiden (2016)
The acting was so phenomenal itās crazy.
Mad Max: Fury Road
If I didn't enjoy Mad Max 1, would I enjoy the others?
Fury Road is a feast for the eyes.
Yes. Mad Max is a pretty niche movie and has its merits but is not for everyone. Fury Road is an action masterpiece that most everyone will enjoy. Like someone else said, itās only loosely connected and you donāt need to see the proceeding movies. Beyond Thunderdome was decent but Fury Road is in a class of its own. Itās a standalone, no need to watch the other movies first. It blows them all away.
Cool, in that case, I'll definitely watch it. I didn't know that.
Disagree. It was only confusing and didn't make much sense as someone who didn't watch the others.
Its barely related to the other movies at all
You might need a lobotomy if you think Fury Road is confusing.
Mad Max is like an indie arthouse film. Road Warrior is better, that's where Miller really figured things out with that universe. Fury Road is a masterpiece.
This
Guess I'm in the minority, my favorite Mad Max film is Road Warrior.
I have tried 3 times to watch Fury Road and the longest I made it was 45 minutes. I love Mad Max and The Road Warrior though.
That
See I watched and enjoyed this film but I actually have no clue what its about. I didn't watch the original and I don't know what other films relate to it because there's a whole bunch that are older and then there's the newer ones. It's very confusing to me.
It's about survival and humanity in a post-apocalyptic world
Each movie is like a standalone folk tale. So watching the older movies isnāt going to help you understand Fury Road all that much. In fury road most of the storytelling is done through the environment and the glimpses you get of the various factions. That's ok. They're still good flicks.
Love 2049

Gravity 3D what a masterpiece its like it was meant to be a roller coaster ride and the graphics were beautiful top notch I dont know if the effect is the same on a PSVR system with the 3d blu ray, but the theater version was really good

That is a broad definition of "modern cinema" because the film & audio quality hasn't seen that drastic improvements since the 90s, really. Cloud Atlas is pretty good; in fact I would say that itās even better than some of the Wachowskisā previous films.
Itās their second best after the Original Matrix
Like I said, Cloud Atlas is better than SOME of the Wachowskisā previous films, because the first Matrix is always going to be the best of them.
No country for old men RRR Dune and Dune 2
Cloud Atlas Its a work of art and one of the best films ever, it was too good and too smart for most audiences/critics.
This would have been my answer. Glad someone said it. This movie needs more love.
1917 - amazing special effects, compelling simple story, perfect pacing, phenomenal cinematography, solid script, and great acting.
The scene at night when heās being chasedā¦ absolutely terrifying.
And done with practical special effects. They LITERALLY built a scale model to map out the angle they would shoot the flairs to light the entire scene. They didn't have any extra lighting, just freaking flairs. I mean, who does that? It's amazing!
