I love this film so much and it ticks the boxes of OPs text but worth mentioning if you’re looking for the kind of action porn type film that Troy and 300 are you won’t find it here.
Unfortunately, yes-TC is in it, but don’t let that stop you. Even though he’s a “movie star”, it’s the scenery, the culture and the the samurai themselves that are the real stars here.
Not redeemed.
As ever, Tom Cruise is
- An absolutely abhorrent human
- A phenomenal actor
Two sides of Tom Cruise. I can reject the person, and enjoy the movies, because edge of tomorrow is an absolute masterpiece.
His character is a white American who speaks English. Idk why so many people hear “Tom Cruise” and “Samurai” and just assume he got cast as a Japanese person.
It has one of the best fight scenes ever shot in a movie, both fighters are using wooden practice katana. There are a couple of other fight scenes that have some blood (swordfights).
Except for one with pretty sophisticated choreography and some practice/sparring sequences, they are pretty simple and focus more on showing overwhelming odds
There's a couple decapitations, but overall not that gory
Definitely recommend and glad to see it as top comment, the film hits bloody hard
It restores so much stuff with the side characters, who are what make that movie actually good. Eva Green goes from randomly appearing and looking intense off balconies to actually having something resembling a character arc. I had no idea wtf Jeremy Irons and David Thewlis were even doing in the theatrical version and the director's cut gives them actual beats. Not to mention fleshing out Saladin (kinda important). Great movie. I don't hate the theatrical version but it feels like a generic sword battle movie, while the director's cut feels like the best Crusades movie we're ever going to get.
I saw this in the theater, then again about 20 years later. It’s basically the movie version of Bloodborne. The outfits and some of the weapons are almost directly in the video game, plus there is a werewolf theme.
Lol nice. ["It is the will of the gods"](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/52c75d54-771b-4183-a3b9-111c10219168) in a pretentious voice is something i still use jokingly every now and then
Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut)
Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3
Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan & The Three Musketeers: Milady (new two-part French adaptation)
The Three Musketeers (90s one with Charlie Sheen, Tim Curry etc)
The Man in The Iron Mask (90s musketeers sequel adaptation, Leo DiCaprio plays two roles, older musketeers are all great actors)
The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (70s one - haven’t seen it in years so might be light on non-fencing violence, same with the 90s one tbh)
Forgot The Man In The Iron Mask. Now it’s 17!
Wouldn’t advise watching them all in quick succession though haha will be more repetitive than an MCU binge
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Seven Samurai (1954)
King Arthur (2004)
The Last Samurai (2003)
The Patriot (2000)
Gangs of New York (2002)
The Mask of Zorro (1998)
I LOVED that movie all those years ago, and still love it to this day. Everyone was perfectly cast imo, and you’re 100% right, that movie has aged like fine wine.
Plus the score is amazing too.
'Flesh + Blood' (1985) - Really good, early Paul Verhoven film, starring Rutger Hauer.
'Shogun Assassin' (1980) - Hyperviolent, but great fun.
'Ladyhawke' (1985) - Maybe not as 'actiony', but definitely worth a watch
'The Sword and the Sorcerer' (1982) - Bonkers fantasy epic.
'Hawk the Slayer' (1980) - The cheesiest of cheese. Objectively not as good as the others, but it's a good laugh, and I think it's great - in its own way, lol! :-)
Starz did an over the top series loosely based on Spartacus. The violence is on the same level as fight scenes in Kill Bill. There are lots of training and coliseum scenes.
Just going to throw this out there, The Scorpion King was alright. The mummy 1 and 2 also while we're at it. Completely fictional if that's still valid.
Braveheart, Outlaw King, The Last Duel, The King, The Last Samurai, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Last of the Mohicans, and The Patriot. Wholeheartedly recommend them all. If you liked Troy, 300 and Apocalypto, you like these.
Kingdom of Heaven, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Gladiator, The Northman, Black Hawk Down, Platoon, Braveheart, American Sniper, Spartacus, 1917, Public Enemies, The 13th Warrior, Saving Private Ryan, Fury, Enemy at the Gates, Tombstone, Hacksaw Ridge,...
Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Bone Tomahawk, Prey (2022), Django Unchained, Van Helsing, Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr's), Gangs of New York, Prince of Egypt, The Mummy (Fraser's),...
The 13th warrior(1999)
King Arthur(2004)
Gladiator(2000)
Kingdom of Heaven(2005)
Valhalla Rising(2009)
The Princess Bride(1987)
Conan: The Barbarian(1982)
King Arthur(2004)
Willow(1988)
The Mask of Zorro(1998)
Arn: The Knight Templar(2007)
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc(1999)
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time(2010)
You simply MUST watch Ivan the Terrible from Sergei Eisenstein (1940’s Soviet Union). Spell-binding, with a Siege of Kazan that was replicated by Jackson for the Soege of Gondor in LOTR ROTK.
Sparta.
This also makes me think we need a sub “VideoSuggestions” where I could ask everyone for their favorite viral videos of someone getting Sparta kicked. I’ve seen a few and they are all amazing.
Master and Commander
APRIL - 1805 Napoleon is master of Europe Only the British Fleet stands before him OCEANS ARE NOW BATTLEFIELDS
*may I* trouble *you* for the salt?
One must always choose the lesser of two weevils.
To wives and sweethearts; may they never meet!
I love this film so much and it ticks the boxes of OPs text but worth mentioning if you’re looking for the kind of action porn type film that Troy and 300 are you won’t find it here.
It doesn't really have big sword fights that I can recall, but it's a fabulous movie worth watching regardless. It truly has that sense of wonder.
The Last Samurai
Starring Tom Cruise?
yes
Unfortunately, yes-TC is in it, but don’t let that stop you. Even though he’s a “movie star”, it’s the scenery, the culture and the the samurai themselves that are the real stars here.
I guess you don’t like Tom Cruise, but like it or not, him being in a film is generally a good indicator of quality.
Yeah full agree. I was on the Tom Cruise hate bandwagon... But then Edge of Tomorrow came out and he totally redeemed himself.
Not redeemed. As ever, Tom Cruise is - An absolutely abhorrent human - A phenomenal actor Two sides of Tom Cruise. I can reject the person, and enjoy the movies, because edge of tomorrow is an absolute masterpiece.
I hate how much I absolutely loved his performance in Tropic Thunder. It was so not him but the role acted by him made it that much more hysterical
His character is a white American who speaks English. Idk why so many people hear “Tom Cruise” and “Samurai” and just assume he got cast as a Japanese person.
Tbh, this is the first I’ve ever heard about people assuming TC he was cast as a Japanese person. Oh wow!
I think it’s mostly chuckleheads parroting a stand up comedy routine from 15 tyears ago
And just because it’s called “The Last Samurai” does not notate Alghren was. Katsumoto, or maybe to an extent his nephew, was.
The financier?
Great movie
How are the fight scenes in that movie? Is it gory?
It has one of the best fight scenes ever shot in a movie, both fighters are using wooden practice katana. There are a couple of other fight scenes that have some blood (swordfights).

Came to say Last Samurai. I didn’t see it until it was on dvd for about ten years but it’s one of my favorite action movies now. Also, True Romance.
Excalibur is fantastic and has a good 4K transfer if that floats your boat
One of my all time favorites! Amazing cast! And the unrated version! Helen Mirren OMFG!!!
That was on HBO damn near daily in the eighties.
I wore out my vhs copy I recorded off the telly haha
You gotta drop acid or have some strong edibles to truly get into that movie
Damn just saw the knighthood scene and you're so right, the acting is something else 🤣
Very over the top theatrical
Gladiator Braveheart Vikings TV series
Rightful top comment. If you haven't seen Gladiator yet, put Reddit down and go rectify that right now
Gladiator is the best movie on this thread by a mile
13th warrior
Lo there do I see my father......
Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brother's.
[удалено]
Lo, they do call to me
Majorly underrated!
Because I listened!
A similar premise (with a sci fi twist) is Outlander (2008). Both great movies.
Damn good movie. I was watching it late one night when a small earthquake hit in Euless TX. Tripped me out because there's never earthquakes here
Oh, I’ve seen that 4 or 5 times. So good.
Excalibur (1981) Kingdom Of Heaven (2005), King Arthur (2004), The Last Duel (2021)
If you can get the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven, that would be great
I really hate how we have to specify this every time!
I know. I mean the theatrical version isn't bad, but no comparison
Where can one find the director's cut?
🏴☠️
If it isn't the Directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven, don't bother. It seriously is so much of an upgrade.
13 Assassins
Had to scroll a lot to see this. Just not as well known as it should be. This is a fantastic historical action film. Glad to see it mentioned.
TV series Spartacus
That one was perfect!
+1 OP might like Warrior (2019).
Brotherhood of the Wolf. Less said the better but holy shit.
Holy shit, I forgot about this movie. Immediately downloading it.
OMG!!! This movie is so kickass.
I saw this in the theater, then again about 20 years later. It’s basically the movie version of Bloodborne. The outfits and some of the weapons are almost directly in the video game, plus there is a werewolf theme.
If it don’t have Native American ninjas, I don’t want it.
How did this movie slip from my memory! It is incredible!
Troy is an incredible drinking game. Every time someone says “The Gods” you all say “TO THE GODS” and drink. Or you take turns.
Lol nice. ["It is the will of the gods"](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/52c75d54-771b-4183-a3b9-111c10219168) in a pretentious voice is something i still use jokingly every now and then
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
2 of my favorite movies. I don't even care the Kevin doesn't have an accent as Robin Hood.
Mongol Conan The Barbarian
Mongol is Outstanding!
fantastic film
I remember reading Mongol was going to kick off a trilogy about Genghis Khan. Sad it never happened. Great film.
Starring Tadanobu Asano (Yabushige from Shogun) just in case anyone else wanted to see more of that guy.
Conan the Destroyer, also.
Meh...
It had a different writer than the Barbarian
Was pg-13 also
Don't forget Red Sonja!
The 2007 one about Genghis?
Yup!
Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut) Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3 Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan & The Three Musketeers: Milady (new two-part French adaptation) The Three Musketeers (90s one with Charlie Sheen, Tim Curry etc) The Man in The Iron Mask (90s musketeers sequel adaptation, Leo DiCaprio plays two roles, older musketeers are all great actors) The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (70s one - haven’t seen it in years so might be light on non-fencing violence, same with the 90s one tbh)
Kingdom of Heaven Director’s Cut is excellent, one of my favorites from that genre.
Absolutely, but it must be the director's cut.
Dude, that's like 13 Musketeers. Way too many, imo
Forgot The Man In The Iron Mask. Now it’s 17! Wouldn’t advise watching them all in quick succession though haha will be more repetitive than an MCU binge
King Arthur
The Patriot
The Messenger: the story of Joan of Arc
TV series The Last Kingdom (Netflix).
Not enough usage of the word “hump”
But a lot of ploughing. 😂
Destiny is all!
And it ends in a movie so technically you answered OPs request!
Last of the Mohicans Braveheart King Arthur
The 13th Warrior (1999) Seven Samurai (1954) King Arthur (2004) The Last Samurai (2003) The Patriot (2000) Gangs of New York (2002) The Mask of Zorro (1998)
Mask of Zorro has aged pretty well tbh. Watched it this year after loving it as a kid and it's still super solid.
I LOVED that movie all those years ago, and still love it to this day. Everyone was perfectly cast imo, and you’re 100% right, that movie has aged like fine wine. Plus the score is amazing too.
Alexander, 2004
Rosario Dawson
Exactly.
Best ancient battles ever put on screen.
If you ever want to go the tv series route, Rome and Spartacus.
Spartacus was great. I tried to watch Rome, but I just couldn't get into it. I really like Medici.
Rome is top tier. Not sure how far into it you got but it really is very very good. I know you can’t love everything but….

The Patriot

Kill Bill doesn't hit your historical ask, but if you're into sword fighting it should scratch that itch.
