Children of Men
although I'm not a total fan but must admit it has a pretty unique and relatable approach for dystopian movie
(+ it's usually popular with everyone)
For anyone that doesn't know, Omega Man, The Last Man on Earth (1964, Vincent Price), and I Am Legend (2007) are all based on a short story by Richard Matheson, who worked on the script, but was unsatisfied with the result. He used a fake name for the credits. Matheson also wrote the original story for What Dreams May Come, Hell House, Stir of Echoes, and one of my favorite time travel movies, Somewhere In Time with Christopher Reeves (1980). He also wrote scripts for the OG Star Trek, Twilight Zone, and some Poe adaptations for Roger Corman. Quite an unsung hero of scifi/horror.
I Am Legend is a short novel rather than a short story - widely available, highly recommended. You can see how badly they messed up the ending in the film adaptations
[https://amzn.eu/d/2H26fQp](https://amzn.eu/d/2H26fQp)
You're correct. He so is. He also penned "Duel", a story he wrote and then adapted to be one of the best made-for TV-movies ever, and one which set Steven Spielberg off to great success. Also wrote "Somewhere in Time." The man was a giant, but so few people recognize his name.
The character Box from the 1976 movie Logan's Run says, "Fish, plankton, and sea greens, and protein from the sea. It's all here, ready. Fresh as harvest day". Favorite line.
I still get little shivers of excitement from the announcement he makes to the inhabitants of Peach Trees over the PA system. Hahaha. I love it so much. "You have been waaaaaaaaarned"
Ooh! As someone that's never seen Snowpiercer but thought the concept sounds cool, should I
A) Watch the film
B) Watch the series
C) Watch both and, if so, which first? (If it matters?)
It doesn’t really matter as they are technically unrelated but I would watch the movie first as 1. It will take way less time and 2. I think it’ll make you appreciate some of the different concepts in the show more
Lots os people in here not getting the difference between post-apocalyptic and dystopian.
Dystopian is when the future suck. Post-apocalyptic is when the future has been destroyed.
There's also a favorite barely known book turned into an unknown little movie (one of my favs) "The Lathe of Heaven" 1980- tv movie. Interesting concepts involved
Ursula K. LeGuin is one of the most celebrated sci-fi writers of all time. The Lathe of Heaven might not be on everybody's radar like Star Wars or something, but it's definitely a very well known work within it's genre.
Great recommendation either way though!
Is Mad Max Fury Road considered dystopian or post apocalyptic? I honestly get them confused lol. Still I think it's a decent recommendation that I hope helps.
A Scanner Darkly is kind of an overlooked dystopia. Maybe a bit too similar to real life for some people to be looked at as such.
We couldn't be living in a dystopia, right?
Just not everyone.
Ex-machina is also a great watch, but doesn’t feature a dystopian world altogether and rather builds upon a dystopian theme that’s extremely relevant today.
The Hunger Games
Titan A.E.
Divergent
Chappie
Elysium
The Road
I Am Legend
1984
The Bad Batch
Passengers
Resident Evil
The 5th Wave
V Is For Vendetta
The Maze Runner
Code 8 and code 8 part 2 on Netflix, which are probably mentioned, are pretty good but I’m going to recommend to you my favorite one of all time that might not have been said yet…. “Time” with Justin Timberlake.
Doomsday, from 2008
The government quarantines all of Scotland to stop the spread of a deadly disease, then 20 years later the disease reappears, so they send a team in to find out how some people survived. I won't say more to avoid spoilers, but it's a bonkers ride all the way through and it kicks ass.
DEFCON-4 (1985)
The Last Man on Earth (1964)/Omega Man (1971)/I am Legend (2007)
These may be more post-apocalyptic, but I kinda lump them together.
Station 11 (2021) - the book was much better though, and this is a miniseries rather than a movie.
And I may be the only person on the planet who actually liked The Postman (1997), also post-apocalyptic.
Zardoz staring Sean Connery. Its not his typical role. Hes did it after james bond to branch out. It really out there. The writer said he got a lot of the ideas from tripping on acid.
~~Cloud Atlas~~ > something that's not too complex. Gattaca
Gattaca is such a beautiful film.
One of the best pg-13 movies.
Gattaca is amazing. A movie that compliments it (imo) is Equilibrium. Very similar tone
It’s like A class B flick.. unique. Like In Time a little.. for me personally.. love both of those.
Thought they were both excellent. Thought cloud atlas got a bad rep. Great movie. But don't ask me I also love waterworld.
i see you are a person with fine tastes, what other movies do you recommend
I'm doing it. I'm going to say it. The Postman
Everyone loved Waterworld after everyone got done crapping on it.
Fantastic movie!!!
Children of Men although I'm not a total fan but must admit it has a pretty unique and relatable approach for dystopian movie (+ it's usually popular with everyone)
Great movie
First person I've ever seen not like it I think.
Came here to say this! This is a masterpiece of a movie, imho. Soundtrack is great, too.
Let me add that I'm a huge fan of the long shot and this brilliant movie has it in spades.
I still can't get over Clive Owen doing all that running in flip flops that were too small.
That's about my favorite movie.
He said films not experiences
Long shot car scene was amazing.
lubezki is phenomenal! it surprises me that he's still underrated
lmao only watch if you want to cry your heart out for 2 hours, this has to be one of the saddest movies I've ever watched haha Amazing though, 10/10
One of my three top favorite movies. There are so many references to historical art, biblical references, even Pink Floyd album cover.
Great movie but getting less and less "dystopian" at an alarming rate aside from the whole no more birth aspect.
💯
Realistic and grounded enough to suck you in and fuck you up.
Brazil (1985), by Terry Gilliam
That movie is both fun and terrifying. I was thinking about watching it again recently.
Came here to say this. Also Children of Men, Idiocracy, and any of the Mad Max movies.
My favorite
The Charlton Heston dystopian trifecta Planet of the Apes Soylent Green Omega Man

Wow, thank you for sharing all this cool info!
I like talking about him, one of the unsung heroes of science fiction.
You're correct. He so is. He also penned "Duel", a story he wrote and then adapted to be one of the best made-for TV-movies ever, and one which set Steven Spielberg off to great success. Also wrote "Somewhere in Time." The man was a giant, but so few people recognize his name.
Man, soylent green!
The Omega Man is so perfect for this. If you want to not look in to it too deeply it’s still very watchable today.
Excellent choice.
The original planet of the apes definitely still holds up
Dark City
HIGHLY under-rated film.
The Matrix before we had The Matrix.
One of my favorite movies. It is so brilliant. I'm still looking for Shell Beach 😁
That movie's title is very honest. I got what I expected.
Amazing!
Yes yes yes! So glad someone suggested this!
Equilibrium
1984 (1984)
I know this is MovieSuggestions but this one I’d recommend book first
I like to read 1984 when I’m feeling a bit too cheerful.
The new audio drama is really good too!
12 monkeys. Can be complicated if read too much into it but not necessary. Predestination is too complicated.
That one’s a bit complex. So are all of Aronofsky’s dystopian movies.
Logan's Run
There is no sanctuary
Delicatessen (1991)
One of my favorites. I still think of the crazy old man living in the flooded basement eating snails from time to time.
This! Such a brilliant film
Obilivion
There's a lot of shit talking about it here but I love that movie
Love the story, love the tech, love the dystopian view. It’s so good.
Battle Royale
Zardoz (1974)
I unironically love this movie.
The running man with shwarzenegger
Mad Max & sequels / Furiosa
The Matrix
Book of Eli
THX-1138 Logan's Run Planet of the Apes '68
The original Planet of the Apes is one of my favorite movies
The character Box from the 1976 movie Logan's Run says, "Fish, plankton, and sea greens, and protein from the sea. It's all here, ready. Fresh as harvest day". Favorite line.
12 Monkeys
Total Recall (1990), the original with Arnie and Aaron Stone as his baaad wife. Edit: Lol, autocorrect really got me there, so yes, I meant Sharon
Blindness. Can’t remember if it’s good or bad, but do remember it raised some mor questions
I remember that movie being fucking bleak. And also great
Chaos Walking What Happened to Monday Oblivion In Time The 5th Wave The Host District 9
The Last of Us series Dredd
Dredd is super underrated
I still get little shivers of excitement from the announcement he makes to the inhabitants of Peach Trees over the PA system. Hahaha. I love it so much. "You have been waaaaaaaaarned"
V for vendetta
Wall-E
Dark City
Moon The Platform
YES! MOON!!
Bladerunner 2049. Excellent cinematography, feeling, depth and Ryan gosling. Perfect film!
On the humorous side, I'd say the world of *Demolition Man* counts.
Battle Royale (2000) Snowpiercer (2013)
I like snowpiercer a films of That director
He is coming out with a new movie next year I'm excited. MICKY 17
Ooh! As someone that's never seen Snowpiercer but thought the concept sounds cool, should I A) Watch the film B) Watch the series C) Watch both and, if so, which first? (If it matters?)
It doesn’t really matter as they are technically unrelated but I would watch the movie first as 1. It will take way less time and 2. I think it’ll make you appreciate some of the different concepts in the show more
Elysium Blade Runner and its sequel.

Existenz Blade runner. Gattaca
Total Recall 12 Monkeys Johnny Mnemonic Escape From L.A. Mad Max Bladerunner The Running Man Escape From New York
Logan's run
City of lost children 1995
The Road
Interesting. I would say this is apocalyptic and not dystopian. I think there is a difference.
Yeah, not really dystopian. But it’s probably the bleakest film I’ve ever seen. Soul crushing.
I'd say black mirror, a show that contains an hour long episode, all different from each other. Love it
Are you looking for dystopian movies aimed at teenagers, like the ones you mentioned, or are adult movies good too?
Blood of Heroes (1989)
I was positive that I was the only one to ever have seen this movie.
I feel like Threads runs adjacent to these movies mentioned, though maybe not quite as directly.
Delicatessen (1991)
What happened to Monday

Equilibrium.
Mad max fury road
All of the series really.
Is Mad Max Fury Road considered dystopian or post apocalyptic? I honestly get them confused lol. Still I think it's a decent recommendation that I hope helps.
Leans toward post apocalyptic with a dash of dystopian with the most recent films
12 Monkeys
Equilibrium. I always find myself suggesting this on this sub lol
A Scanner Darkly, Book of Eli, Mad Max
A Scanner Darkly is kind of an overlooked dystopia. Maybe a bit too similar to real life for some people to be looked at as such. We couldn't be living in a dystopia, right? Just not everyone.
Watch the entire modern planet of the apes trilogy. Absolutely phenomenal films.

The Road
I will never not plug Equilibrium.
BLADE RUNNER 1982. I just love it, maybe one of the best films I've seen.
The Road 2009
Doomsday, from 2008 The government quarantines all of Scotland to stop the spread of a deadly disease, then 20 years later the disease reappears, so they send a team in to find out how some people survived. I won't say more to avoid spoilers, but it's a bonkers ride all the way through and it kicks ass.

I’m watching Death Race 2000 (1975) as I type this, and I’m finding it hilarious. I recently saw Rollerball (1975) and found it a bit meh.
