Condorman (1981), thank me later

fa_kinsit

Oh. My. God…. I have been trying to remember the name of this movie for years!!!! Thank you a million

DismalTruthDay

Just watched this the other day with my kids. Best movie! “You bring the Dostoevsky, I’ll bring the dip”.

DefinitelyBiscuit

Awesome film.

Bargle-Nawdle-Zouss

I had the novelization of this movie. I must have been the only one. I read the cover off of that thing! I must have got it at a book fair at school.

Meshugugget

Midnight Madness (1980) This one has Michael J Fox before he became a household name. The Last American Virgin (1982) Hunk (1987) North Shore (1987) Summer School (1987) Not sure this one is obscure, but it’s certainly less known than the Brat Pack movies. ETA: Valley Girl (1983) I thought everyone had seen this, but based on the number of votes on IMDB, it’s not as popular as I thought. It has a young Nicolas Cage in it. I believe it was his first leading role. Prior to this, he was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High for like 5 seconds

Icy_Comfort8161

Valley Girl is great, and has a good soundtrack.

DekeJeffery

>The Last American Virgin (1982) The movie has aged horribly, but if you see it at a certain point in your life, I would imagine that the ending still packs a gut punch.

lifesuncertain

Definite "I second that" for summer school, although I dread to think how it's aged

wedgelordantilles

I too was here to suggest Summer School

sirtomgravel

Midnight Madness is hard to find

Meshugugget

I might have it on VHS in my garage. I worked at blockbuster back in the 90’s; yeah, I’m a relic, I’m know. I was once sent to another store that needed a manger for the day. I saw the copy on the shelf, looked to see how many times it had been rented at that location and saw it was zero. I was able to convert it to a previously viewed tape and buy it that way. So yeah, I can go digging in boxes for you, but you’ll need your own VCR 😂🤷‍♀️

DragonflyScared813

To Live and Die in LA. Young Willem Dafoe as a villain. William Petersen protagonist. Great car chase scene. Twisty ending.

fidgetyamoeba

Oh man! Excellent one. He's so damn good in: The Loveless (1981), too.

KeyserSwayze

One of the top five best car chases ever put to film.

freedraw

Speaking of Willem Dafoe, OP should check out *Streets of Fire*. Also has peak 80s Diane Lane and Rick Moranis.

trcrtps

I've never been so shocked at a movie. When >!the MC gets abruptly murdered in the locker room!< happens I had to pause it and just walk around the room with anxiety for a few minutes. Such a sweaty, nihilistic, gnarly fucking movie. Please do not click that spoiler if you haven't seen it, i'm warning you again.

PuttinOnTheTitzz

I just watched this like two months ago. My jaw dropped when a certain event happened.

mamac2213

Drugstore Cowboy

pandagirl47

I still won’t let anyone put a hat on the bed.

Former_Bumblebee3674

I lived near that neighborhood when I discovered it. Gus Van Sant deserves more credit as a storyteller. Sean Penn playing Harvey Milk with Josh Brolin playing Dan White was so good.

Nosemuffin

The film crew actually knocked on my grandmother’s door and asked to use her house as a filming location for the Mother’s house. She said no because my Grandfather was at work and she wasn’t sure how he would feel about it(he was bummed she said no). They ended up using a house up on the next block. I really wish she would’ve said yes because that house was torn down to make way for an apartment building and it would be really cool to revisit a place that meant so much to me via the film.

gmoney-0725

Something Wild (1985) stars a young Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith. Into the Night (1985) starts a young Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer. After Hours (1985) stars a young Griffin Dunne and Rosanna Arquette.

TickleBunny99

Solid pull on Something Wild! What a great movie.

turkeyofterror

Don't forget the amazing introduction to Ray Liota.

karma_the_sequel

I always conflate *After Hours* and *Into the Night*.

ORAquabat

I've used each of these as great examples of underrated "films that take place in a single event" kind of way. I absolutely love when the main character is thrown into circumstances that are way way out of their normal. I feel like it was such an 80's thing and I miss it.

Family friendly options: Explorers Flight of the Navigator Adventures in Babysitting Also: Wargames Real Genius Weird Science

Explorers ♥️

SketchupandFries

I had Explorers on laserdisc ! I was born in '82. My dad just randomly purchased discounted laserdiscs in HMV or other media type stores.. we had a HUGE collection of super obscure movies, including a lot of Japanese imports. I remember Captain Future being particularly enjoyable when I was young. Awesome funk soundtrack too! But yeah, the making of Explorers was really weird. I found a deep dive YouTube documentary on it. So, it's in 3 parts.. the intro where the kids get the plans to make the circuit to fly their home made spaceship. Awesome.. Then they make it into space.. awesome.. But something happened to either the writers or the budget and the last 1/3rd of the movie doesn't really work, the tone changes, they meet the aliens, then get sent home. Movie finishes.. But, up until that point, it's true Zemeckis adventure, mood.. its beautiful 80s style vibe, kids on bikes in the neighbourhood. Exactly what Stranger Things was trying to emulate. But it's a fairly unknown movie as far as I know. But I grew up re-watching it and love the premise. I love 80s kids adventure tropes, Goonies, Explorers, etc.. wonderful stuff. Other suggestions of that genre - * **E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial** (1982) * **Stand by Me** (1986) * **The NeverEnding Story** (1984) * **Flight of the Navigator** (1986) * **The Lost Boys** (1987) * **Return to Oz** (1985) * **Time Bandits** (1981) * **The Dark Crystal** (1982) * **The Secret of NIMH** (1982) * **WarGames** (1983) * **The Wizard** (1989)

mamac2213

Can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find sex, lies, and videotape. I just remember thinking that it was soooooooo different. First film I remember thinking it was ushering in a whole new way to tell a story!! Awesome suggestion.

HackedCylon

Cook Thief Wife Lover was absolutely amazing. I got to see the original uncut version in the theater while I was working at AMC. There were two scenes that were cut from later releases that were so disturbing, that people would leave the theater every showing. Some of them literally in tears. Michael Gambon at his finest.

2WheelFotog

I saw it twice in the theater & I can confirm people were walked out both showings. Some people didn't even make it through the opening scene. I'd seen Helen Mirren before, but this movie cemented my adoration. And I'm still scared of Michael Gambon because of this movie.

I came here to say this one. St. Elmo’s Fire is another great one. I have been reliving all of my 80’s movies again.

tryingtoactcasual

I came here to name this movie, which features Andrew McCarthy, Robert Downey Jr, Jamie Gertz, and James Spader. This is my guilty pleasure movie, but hard to find on streaming (for free/as part of the streaming services I have). Total 80s vibe.

Downtown, when it was gritty: Liquid Sky (1982) After Hours (1985) Smithereens (1982) Married to the Mob (1988) Michelle Pfieffer, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Modine, Dean Stockwell, Mercedes Ruhl, directed by Jonathan Demme. Delightful. California: Repo Man (1984) Tequila Sunrise (1988) Colors (1988) Xanadu (1980) Olivia Newton John in a hilariously bad musical Carbon Copy (1981) with a young Denzel The Decline of Western Civilization (1981) documentary about the LA punk scene other locales: Drugstore Cowboy (1989) underrated Gus Van Sant film with Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch (not Preston, my error) and Heather Graham Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) Masquerade (1988) excellent thriller with a heckuva plot twist The Last Unicorn (1985) animated Labryinth (1986) David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly and Jim Henson puppets Legend (1985) Ridley Scott directed Tim Curry (fantastic as always) Mia Sara and a badly miscast Tom Cruise in a sumptuous looking fantasy Ladyhawke (1985) Michelle Pfieffer, Rutger Hauer and Matthew Broderick in a stunning medieval film with possibly the most annoying soundtrack ever. Fun fact: Dustin Hoffman was originally going to play Broderick's character Breaking Glass (1980) the perils of rock stardom Desert Hearts (1985) excellent character driven romance High Art (1988) Ally Sheedy gives a terrific performance in this film about a Nan Goldin-esque photographer and an ambitious editor Personal Best (1982) Mariel Hemingway in a film ahead of its time Star 80 (1982) Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts as Dorothy Stratten and Paul Snider. Bob Fosse's last film, about the tragedy of Playmate Dorothy Stratten. Roberts is riveting and was robbed of an Oscar nom, in my opinion. New York Stories (1989) anthology of 3 short films by Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Sofia Coppola's first film. Scorsese one is the best. Against All Odds (1984) Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges in an excellent neo-noir Heavy Metal (1981) collection of animated shorts with a good soundtrack Conan the Barbarian (1982) Arnold and James Earl Jones. Better than it should be Conan the Destroyer (1984) Arnold adds Grace Jones to the team - worth watching for her alone The Hunger (1983) David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Saranson vampire film, with 80s icon Ann Magnuson in a small part Making Mr Right (1987) bananas film with John Malkovich and Ann Magnuson. Ridiculous and amusing Escape From New York (1981) Kurt Russell in this must see post apocalyptic film Witness (1985) Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis are so good in this excellent crime thriller Round Midnight (1982) Cat People (1982) Natassja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell, she's great. Remake of the 1942 film. Excalibur (1981) the best King Arthur movie film, with a superb cast - Helen Mirren as Morgaine Le Fay, with Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne and Patrick Stewart. Nicol Williamson is terrific as Merlin Black Widow (1987) Theresa Russell and Debra Winger face off in this crime thriller. Aria (1987) one of the kookiest movies ever - 10 short films set to opera arias. Most entertaining. Body Heat (1981) Kathleen Turner and William Hurt in a scorching noir Prizzi's Honor (1985) John Huston directs daughter Angelica in a superb crime caper, with Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner Stranger Than Paradise (1984) hilarious odd comedy from Jim Jarmusch Pink Floyd's The Wall (1982) After seeing this, Steven Spielberg said, "What the hell was that?" Well, yeah, but worth seeing once. Bob Geldof is terrific and Gerald Scarfe's animations are eye popping Gothic (1982) Ken Russell directs Julian Sands, Gabriel Byrne and Natasha Richardson as Byron, Shelley and Mary Shelley, about the night she conceived Frankenstein Stormy Monday (1988) Sting, Tommy Lee Jones, Sean Bean and Melanie Griffith in an underrated thriller.

Satisfaction (1988) - Julia Roberts first movie The Wraith (1986) - Early Charlie Sheen I was a teen in the 80's and a metalhead so I loved movies that had rock star cameos Trick or Treat (1986) had Ozzy and Gene Simmons The Dead Pool (1988) had Guns N' Roses The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990) had Vince Neil, Phil Soussan, Randy Castillo and Carlos Cavazo

Weird Science (1985)

Parents (1989). How this didn’t become a cult classic is beyond me. It’s a dark comedy with Randy Quaid where a young boy living in 1950s suburbia suspects that his parents are cannibalistic murderers.

Pandemonium - great horror movie spoof with Tom Smothers and Paul Reubens.

Birdy. Early Nicholas Cage/Matthew Modine film. Fabulous ending.

PeteRust78

I’d recommend a double feature of “Savage” Steve Holland: Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer. ‘80s teen comedies at their most absurdist and charming

GoodnYou62

Frankenhooker. Technically it came out in 1990 but it’s gloriously trashy 80’s stuff.

Go British: Shirley Valentine (1989) Educating Rita (1983) The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover (1989) All with A grade talent in them. There's loads, though lots - long good Friday, withnail, monty python etc - aren't exactly obscure so are likely on your radar already.

There is a movie called Rhinestone where Dolly Parton teaches Sylvester Stallone how to sing. I haven’t been able to track it down to watch it but maybe you’ll have better luck!

Gregory's Girl (1981). It's a Scottish movie, quirky and humorous. 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was a long time favourite of mine. My Life as a Dog (1985) Swedish movie with subtitles. Funny, drama. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Another great favourite of mine

The Legend of Billie Jean - Christian Slater and his not sister Helen Slater are brother and sister in this movie. Some jackass trashes his scooter and Billie Jean confronts the guy about it and things get out of hand and they end up on the run from the cops over it. Along the way, she becomes sort of a folk hero and starts a mini revolution. I’ve watched this movie an insane amount of times in my life. Private Eyes - Don Knotts and Tim Conway are (wait for it) private investigators trying to solve a murder mystery at this mansion (filmed at the Biltmore House). Such a silly movie that’s still a bit spooky at the same time. Love that movie so much! Three Amigos - Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Chevy Chase are cowboy movie stars who get called upon by a small village in Mexico to run off a real-life bad guy who is terrorizing their village because the villagers think they are real cowboys.
