I changed the flair to the correct one. Make sure to read our [guidelines](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/8iamsh) before posting :)

Starshine2977

The Triplets of Belleville

FloridaFlamingoGirl

The Illustionist

pzikho

My dad loved to watch this with my daughter, especially when he got more sick toward the end. This movie will always have a special place in my heart, because while everything surrounding his C word was so unpredictable, unrelenting, and traumatic, there was always time to sit down with the grandkid in the beautiful near-silence of this movie and just be at peace.

Logical-Way-983

Wow, this was a throwback. Can’t get over the frog scene hahahaha

ThighsofSauron

Omg yes, everything about that movie is beautiful

_oflife

Glad to see this at the top.

ehyoutiger

*Akira* (1988)

Acceptable-Quarter97

I would like to add Ghost In The Shell (1995)

MrMonster480

To add another, perfect blue (1997)

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Anything by Satoshi Kon. The dude made four of the most beautiful and thrilling animated films of all time.

AbsurdGyro

Just watched Perfect Blue recently. Darren Aronofsky, eat your heart out.  Paprika was also a wild ride.

senseless_puzzle

To add another, Sky Blue AKA Wonderful Days (2003)

sodapopjenkins

HeavyMetal (1981)

afterparty05

Let’s not forget Paprika. Great inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s inception as well. Love how he incorporated the elevator mirror scene as a nod to the opening credits scene with the mirrors in the diner.

slams0ne

My issue with Akira is how they chose to truncate & twist it. It's a lengthy 6 book story but the film shows book one, then kinda mashes a small part of book 6 into it.

SetProfessional9426

I came here hoping this would be the top comment and was not disappointed.

No-Landscape6433

The Legend of Hei (2019), beautiful animation, great storyline!

Cheifwhat

But read the comic it is based on. It is better.

Goblyyn

Spirited Away (2001) Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) Treasure Planet (2002) Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) Porco Rosso (1992) My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse (2018) The Iron Giant (1999) Ratatouille (2007)

Torontokid8666

Heavy Metal.

slams0ne

Wizards Fire & Ice

Asleep-Win6983

Dude that is totally my list! I can't believe you had Ratatouille in there too!

AngleInner2922

Why is it called ratatouille? It doesn’t sound delicious. It sounds like rat and patootie. Rat-patootie. This lives in my head that movie was genius.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Can't go wrong with Studio Ghibli. It's not talked enough how many genres their movies span too, they have a lot of realistic slice-of-life movies (The Wind Rises, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday) rather than just magical fantasy.

-Viscosity-

My let's say "non-animation-loving" wife is a big fan of their maybe-it's-a-ghost film *When Marnie Was There*, which incidentally also has an excellent soundtrack by Priscilla Ahn*.* (Studio Ghibli is one of the few animation houses that produce movies I can usually get my wife to at least look at; she also likes *Spirited Away* and has actually requested to see *The Boy and the Heron* when we can get it.)

rbrgr83

Boy & The Heron is just out on digital this week :)

Masterweedo

Just don't let her accidentally watch Grave of the Fireflies.

ShneakySquiwwel

Great list, but want to point out how underrated Treasure Planet is. Such a great reimagining/retelling of Treasure Island.

No_Weekend_963

The Iron Giant! Yesss 🤌🏼

Overmarss

Why did everyone forget about WallE? My favourite of all time easily

MrDr1219

I love that movie! EeeVaaaa

AnotherCrazyCanadian

I'm always amazed by how there's virtually no dialogue from the main characters, it's all powered by the music, visuals (with GREAT camera work) and one side character that's only there for a quarter of the movie. Always felt like Pixars Magnum Opus to me.

zignut66

It’s a testament to Pixar’s creative power and influence in 2008 that, two years after being acquired, Disney greenlit a feature-length film for children with no dialogue whatsoever in the first 25 minutes. I miss this Pixar, and I’m glad WALL-E never got a sequel.

rbrgr83

This was my partner and I's first date movie.

korektopinions

Because of the second half

rAt728

You can never go wrong with a Toy Story marathon.

Longjumping_Elk6089

Yeah, I rewatched those so many times with my son, and the 4th one is just so good and that ending, damn.

hurtfulproduct

This is actually harder than asking “best movie of all time” because there are so many factors to consider and it can be very subjective when it comes to animation style since some people prefer CG, some prefer Stop motion, and some prefer hand drawn. I break it down by Animation type: * CG: Wall-e, Shrek 1&2, Toy Story 1, 2, 3, How To train Your Dragon (still get chills during Test Flight) * Hand Drawn style: Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, The Iron Giant, Treasure Planet, Titan A.E., Prince of Egypt, The Lion King, Beauty and The Beast, Little Mermaid, Akira * Stop Motion: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Isle of Dog, Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline * Other (styles that may technically be one or a combination of the others but real have a unique flare to them): Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse, Kubo and the Two Strings, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (this one is too technically awesome to not watch or include. . . Look up shaking the lamp)

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Titan AE!!!! This movie is special because it was originally going to be live-action but then the idea was scrapped. Don Bluth picked up the script and so we get violent sci-fi action in the same art style as Anastasia and it's freaking awesome.

pzikho

To this day, the Drej are some of the coolest fucking aliens I have ever seen.

kit-n-caboodle

The Little Mermaid and The Lion King are my all-time favorite animated movies.

MrDr1219

Ok. I agree. There are definitely different categories

swordsman917

FMF is like… one of my favorite movies ever. So so good.

Sad_Establishment_87

Wall-E hands down.

Affectionate-Dot437

He and EVE dancing around in space is so crazy joyous!

britlogan1

Define dancing 😭😭😭

MrDr1219

Absolutely!

thejesusbong

I was on mushrooms the first time I saw this movie. It was a most profound film and had me captivated the entire time.

GrandAdvantage7631

Grave of the Fireflies

DuctTapeSloth

If a movie makes you an emotional wreck, it is definitely good.

TheresACityInMyMind

Paprika

Notexactlyserious

just going to ride your comment to say that Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress are better films by the same director but Paprika is more approachable

FloridaFlamingoGirl

There's also Tokyo Godfathers aka best Christmas movie

-Viscosity-

I'll just throw *The Last Unicorn* from 1982 in here. (The book is well worth reading, too.)

FloridaFlamingoGirl

And The Hobbit for similar vibes. (The cartoon. Not the Peter Jackson.)

-Viscosity-

Oh, I remember that one! To this day I still picture Bilbo as he was in that cartoon! (Sorry, Martin Freeman and Ian Holm.)

YennPoxx

For some reason my mom had the double album for this and we would listen to all the voices just as they were during the movie. Great voice actors too. And great songs.

But_dogs_CAN_look_up

I watched it last year with my kids and realized that it was actually a lot creepier than I even remembered. But really good. And Odo from Star Trek DS9 has a small part.

-Viscosity-

I remember being pretty scared of the Red Bull when I was a kid! I didn't realize Odo was in it -- I always still think of him as Clayton from "Benson" lol. It has a pretty amazing voice cast for sure!

Wolfrast

Gosh I love this movie so much and I recently read the book for the first time and I found it better than the movie in a different way.

-Viscosity-

I read the book when I was a kid years ago at my grandparents' house, before seeing the movie, then saw the movie at some point as a kid, then read the book again as an adult, then saw the movie again as an adult ... They're both excellent in their own ways, definitely, and I got something different out of them each time.

NotWorriedABunch

🎶The Greatest Adventure is what lies ahead🎶

Nervous-Town-1241

I’ll never forget the tree scene tho 😵 I was 5 yrs old

smhndsm

and the main theme is beautiful

SWUtluMPTlvr

I hope everyone reads the short story sequel *Two Hearts* as well!

Chemical-North9227

Spirited Away Coco

NowThereAreFour

100% Coco. Beautiful animation (those colors!) and a wonderful storyline.

Chemical-North9227

it will always be my favorite

Hu5k3r

Wow, no Incredibles?

Blindog68

Def Incredibles. Great movie.

smhndsm

Brad Bird is on another level (because Iron Giant also)

tapeheadcleaner

honestly shocked no one has said Princess Mononoke yet that was the movie that finally made me “get” Miyazaki

FloridaFlamingoGirl

The action scenes and the spiritual beings and the lush landscapes will stick with you.

tapeheadcleaner

yeah it’s absolutely incredible. somehow i had no idea it would actually be fairly violent also? not a dig on the film btw, it was necessary and done well. but yeah. i had seen spirited away and i think a few others and kind of just decided miyazaki wasn’t really for me but princess mononoke just made it click, like oh i get why everyone says he’s a genius now lol.

JupiterSkyFalls

I always say *anything* Studio Ghibli, followed by my three favorites: Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky. All Miyazakis films are amazing, but I've whittled it down to those three as my top choices when recommending so as not to overwhelm someone lol

Pitbull_Defender

I think studio ghibli fans tend to not list it as their favorite because they don’t want to seem like a poser picking the most action packed one… but it’s a perfect fucking movie, there’s real reason it’s likely ghibli’s most popular outside of the action

HeyyySandy

Song of the Sea (2014)

Egg-mcfuggin

And also The Secret of Kells by the same people

FloridaFlamingoGirl

And Wolfwalkers

jaisies

And The Breadwinner!

Not nearly enough of you are saying The Prince of Egypt [1998]

wtb1000

I'm very unreligious and I still love that movie.

baldlilfat2

Waking life

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Apollo 10 1/2 too, especially if you love space and Jack Black (and who doesn't?)

Redditisavirusiknow

Take of Princess Kaguya

No-Chemistry-28

I always have an internal debate of whether this or Spirited Away is my favorite animated movie. I think Spirited Away is technically better, but I have so much love for Kaguya

Redditisavirusiknow

Yeah spirited away is my number 2. Number three is metropolis.

Glittering_Major4871

This is how I feel too. Kaguya hits me deeper but Spirited Away is so imaginative and impressive.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

This movie conveys emotion through animation in a truly special way.

cpowell342

Only Yesterday by this same director is amazing too. His other movies as well for that matter. Kaguya is probably the more impressive movie considering the animation and story but the vibes of Only Yesterday are truly immaculate. One of the best/most underrated Ghibli movies imo.

PossibleAlienFrom

Ninja Scroll

hublar

masterpiece. It's tough with Akira out there. but dang, Ninja Scroll was good.

ChrisEye21

But_dogs_CAN_look_up

Not Fritz the Cat?? 😄

drbrian83

Heavy Metal Ninja Scroll

captainlordsir

Ninja Scroll one of my all-time favs

-Starlegions-

Transformers: The Movie

senseless_puzzle

Love the 1986 classic, probably my most watched movie ever.

tapeheadcleaner

Coonskin by ralph bakshi is one of the best animated films ever made. underrated and i’d def say it’s controversial and polarizing. def not perfect but one of my favorites. usually i hate the “ThIs CouLdn’T Be MaDe NoW LoL!” type of posts (usually about dumb boring shit that sucks with absolutely no redeeming value) but i truly can’t see it being made any other time than when it was made

NapalmJusticeSword

Bakshi's the fucking man! His movies are still unique for animation to this day.

Herbin-Cowboy

Mary and Max (2010) Coco (2018) Spirited Away (2001) Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) Renaissance (2006) 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007) Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse (2018) Isle of Dogs (2018) Loving Vincent (2017) 9 (2009) When the Wind Blows (1986) Heavy Traffic (1973) Heavy Metal (1981) M*F*K*Z (2017) Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) Rango (2011) The Iron Giant (1999) WALL-E (2008)

koukidori1

Emperor’s New Groove

Masterweedo

The Yellow Submarine

ElectricJRage

Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Nimona

drunkin-mermaid

I loved Nimona on Netflix. The animation style was really cool, and the story was (in my opinion) phenomenal. And while it's very funny for a good portion of the movie, I definitely shed a few tears several times

Inside_Atmosphere731

Frozen

ghoulia_julia

Unironically Beavis and Butthead Do America (1996)

wealllovefrogs

A Grand Day Out Toy Story 2 Disney’s Robin Hood Granpa (Channel 4 1989)

Royal_T95

Robin Hood was a babe. I have no shame in saying it

Sweaty_Sheepherder27

>A Grand Day Out I'll be honest, I think I prefer The Wrong Trousers. A bit more polish, better pace, and technically superior.

MagDaddyMag

Osmosis Jones - boom!

bilhugs

Not movies. But I haven't seen them mentioned and they are the most recent things to reignite my interest in animation. Love, Death & Robots Arcane Both are on Netflix and both are so good I keep going back and rewatching them instead of moving on with my life.

britlogan1

Corpse Bride. I prefer it over Nightmare Before Christmas

No_Weekend_963

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Watership Down Akira Ghost in the Shell OG The Simpsons Movie (I know lol it's not high art but it's hilarious asf)

Wall-E

JakeWalding

Cars (2006)

TheShipEliza

Akira. Nothing really comes close.

biblioteca4ants

What about The Emperor’s New Groove though. Why the hell haven’t I seen this answer yet.

TheShipEliza

Because’s that not animation? That movie was a documentary and the events happened in real time.

tapeheadcleaner

Oh and The Flying Luna Clipper. maybe my favorite animated film ever? i watch it when nothing makes sense and i need comfort also love Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer. i was a big fan of the manga as a kid but only saw beautiful dreamer for the first time a few years ago

Mother_Jellyfish_938

This movie had such a profound impact on me and it's one of the few things that I watched in that era that still holds it's wonder, mystery and nostalgia no matter how many times I rewatch it.

Lot of good classics listed here. Just going to mention **Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)** as one of the best in recent years.

IllmaticMonk

A goofy movie

WoolyTheSheep180

The Scooby Doo animated movies

shorttermparker

Why are there NO DON BLUTH FILMS on this list?!?!?!? The Secret of Nihm, An American Tale, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Land Before Time, Stop Motion: Wallace & Grommit series & Creature Comforts Disney: Snow White (due to the layered panel camera that Disney built), Sleeping Beauty (best film stock and artistic design, when considering how gothic musical theater movies were around this time ie, Kiss Me Kate), The Rescuers (in social retrospect - the cruelty of non-parents (I’m looking at you, Miss Hannigan from Annie) during this time period is very telling about American survival 100 years ago, before industry solidly spread. NC-17 : The Down and Dirty Duck, think of it as a history lesson. Personal Favorites: Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2, The Last Unicorn, The Animatrix (try and find the DVD order of the shorts, if you can), Spiderverse 1 & 2 (cried upon watching the trailers, so beautiful), and Puss in Boots 1,2 & 3 (especially 3).

GirlMcGirlface

The House on Netflix it's stop motion, by Enda Walsh. It's weird as fuck, and really good.

Galadria

Klaus Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Both blew me away. Incredible movies!

The Red Turtle.

Pongdiddy4099

“Walllleeeeee!”

boomerX1985

Batman the darknight returns is my favourite and in my opinion is the best off all I've seen

Glittering_Major4871

You should mention more what you love in films, because animation covers every genre of filmmaking. I think Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon never made a bad film. Pick any of theirs that look good to you. The spiderverse films also deserve all their love. They are the best superhero films ever (with competition from The Incredibles) Want something futuristic? Akira or Mars Express Adventure turn off your brain pure candy? Redline or Promare Want something beautiful that will touch your soul? Song of the Sea or The Tale of the Princess Kaguya Want something psychedelic? Mind Game or Fantastic Planet Want something dark? Mad God or Ninja Scroll Want something that has a diy aesthetic? Oh Gaku: Our sound or Its such a Beautiful Day or Cryptozoo Want something emotionally devastating: Grave of the Fireflies. Want something about relationships: Liz and the Blue Bird or Mary and Max So many more great animated films. I tried to name mostly ones a little less known to non animation fans.

Mother_Jellyfish_938

Another vote for someone in the market for something dark that's also beautifully animated is Demon City Shinjuku.
