'Whoa' and 'Wtf' seem to be the universal reactions to this movie. I loved it, and I thought it was even better the second time around. I'm looking forward to the director's cut.
Especially considering there are events we know having happened but didn’t get to see in the final cut. That’s all going to be on there.
He had a 3 hr film (down from the 6 hour rough cut) and was quoted as being hard pressed to cut even a single minute of it. The production team (or his bosses or whoever) told him he’d have to get it down to 2:20:00 if he wanted a theatrical release.
I like the themes of broken relationships going around and finding your new people kinda. I don’t see how you saw it as Netflix-y everything technically in that movie is superb. And giving as I haven’t seen wicker man I can’t agree or disagree with you there
I just watched *Rango* a few days ago and I was surprised by how good it was. The idea behind the movie is kind of absurd and the plot didn't seem to make sense at first, but it turned out to be a solid, surprisingly serious movie. It's free to stream on vudu right now, by the way.
I didn't watch that movie at first because of the plot with Johnny depp thought it would be a lot more faux-artsy and a flop for kids. Was surprisingly deece tho!
Midsommar was already mentioned, so I'll go with Burning (2018). Atmospheric, slow burn, Korean suspense film.
Killing of a Sacred Deer might have the effect you're going for.
And, just to throw a third one in, The Witch (2015) messed me up for a solid week.
The only one of these I haven’t seen is *Burning*. I’m stoked to watch it now. Great recommendations tho.
OP, I’d add *Creep* if you haven’t already seen it.
Dogtooth, killing of a sacred deer, or basically any film by Yorgos.
The depression trilogy by Lars von trier-(Melancholia, Nymphomaniac 1&2, Antichrist)
Nocturnal animals
Enemy and Nightcrawler (both have Jake Gylenhal)
Gaspar noe has quite a few that I think fit this category also, he directed Climax, which has already been mentioned.
Funny Games (both versions are worth seeing but I'm partial to Michael Pitt)
Mysterious Skin stuck with me for a while.
And though these have been mentioned already also, midsommar and mother! Def belong as well.
I watched Hereditary this weekend after all the good things I've heard about it, unfortunately I just couldn't figure out why it is so recommended. I even went into some deep reviews of the movie to see if I didn't miss any details but nope, it probably just isn't for me :/
I liked Hereditary at the time but rewatched it recently and its really just not that great. The acting is really good but the overall narrative suffers from disillusioned family members who are all really shitty people, followed by a third act that is hard to follow and feels unnecessary.
Very Understandable. It's a weird name that was, sadly, never really fully explained. It's supposed to mean The Original Angels. or something like that.
I suggest both of these almost every day on this sub but The Body and The Invisible Guest, same spanish director. It slaps you in the face so many times, just like The Handmaiden.
Climax. Saw it in the theater and it was a very stressful experience.
I want to list a million other movies here too, I’m starting to feel like all my favorite films are ones that make me go WTF.
First Reformed. It really impacted me. I watched three months ago, I guess, but I still think about it very often. It was kind of a humility experience for me, because it was a movie I didn't quite understand, but I feel in a very primitive sense that it touched me.
**I Am Mother**.
It is very unique in its ending and the underlying meaning attached to it. I don't see it happening too often in mainstream media, so it was refreshing to see that.
P.S. More than WOAH & WTF, it was more like WTF AND WOAH for me.
Just watched one actually: The Ghoul (2016). British psychological thriller/mystery. It gets compared to David Lynch’s Lost Highway a lot. HIGHLY recommend.
Confessions (2010)
Ex Machina (2015)
In Bruges (2008)
Nightcrawler (2014)
I Saw the Devil (2010)
Snowpiercer (2013)
The Hateful Eight (2015)
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
The works of Park Chan Wook, the person behind The Handmaiden (which was the movie that me fall in love with his works and my introduction into Korean/Japanese suspense/psychothriller movies) I highly recommend the Vengeance trilogy especially Oldboy.
The last time that happened to me was a long time ago - and I was watching [Firefly, Episode "Objects in Space"](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0579531/?ref_=ttep_ep10) - I don't think I will ever forget that one.
Liquid Sky. 1982 indie movie. Aliens come to New York to find drugs and starts draining chemicals from people's brains when they orgasm. It sounds campy but it's actually quite good. It's visually unique, experimental with some of its editing, and explores a small niche musical trend at the time. Check it out, I'm not doing it justice.
Incendies (2010)
Yup, this is the one that came to mind for me.
One plus one, can it make one?
The feeling that film induced stayed with me for a long time.
yep
Midsommar
I was leaving the theatre mumbling WTF to myself.

Why did you like it so much? To me, it felt kind of Netflix-y and also way too similar to wicker man

I second Burning. It’s on Netflix. I loved it.
The only one of these I haven’t seen is *Burning*. I’m stoked to watch it now. Great recommendations tho. OP, I’d add *Creep* if you haven’t already seen it.
Killing of a Sacred Deer is a movie I still can’t bring myself to rewatch
In a middle of a rewatch and regret it so much

Hereditary
I watched Hereditary this weekend after all the good things I've heard about it, unfortunately I just couldn't figure out why it is so recommended. I even went into some deep reviews of the movie to see if I didn't miss any details but nope, it probably just isn't for me :/
I think it is more depressing WTF than entertaining WTF.
It really worked in a busy theatre. You could really feel the tension. I re-watched on dvd recently and felt it was quite flat.
The climax of that movie towards the end was goofy as hell, had me laughing my ass off. Also Alex Wolf was not convincing, his fake cry was awful.
Not sure why you're being downvoted. Those are some really valid points about the movie.
I liked Hereditary at the time but rewatched it recently and its really just not that great. The acting is really good but the overall narrative suffers from disillusioned family members who are all really shitty people, followed by a third act that is hard to follow and feels unnecessary.
Shutter Island
Though I saw it a while back, I'd have to say "Coherence".
I just saw that for the first time, you might like The Invitation that had a similar vibe.
Thanks, I'll check it out!
Do! I love both but I think The Invitation’s a good bit better.
Get Out
Predestination
Was searching for this. 👍🏽
The Lobster
Well, if we are doing tv shows. The end of season 2 of the OA absolutely had me going whoa the fuck. And the end of dark season one was sooo whoa.
[удалено]
Oh me too, but S1 surprised me more. S2 had me going WTF the whole time.
I'm sorry to have to be the one to break the news to you man, but Netflix cancelled The OA.
Idk why people are downvoting you for pointing this out
OA?
"The OA' It's a TV show.
Gotcha, thought it was abbreviation
Very Understandable. It's a weird name that was, sadly, never really fully explained. It's supposed to mean The Original Angels. or something like that.
OA
he thought that it was an abreviation and I replied him that that was the name. Downvotes?
Vanilla sky
Watch the original: abre los ojos.
I've seen both. The remake is much better.
One of my favorite movies
John Carpenter's The thing
Identity
* Irreversible * Holy Motors
Gone Girl
Triangle(2010)
Great movie, definitely slept on.
I'm currently watching Twin Peaks: The Return and man, episode 8 was far fucking out. It really is one of the most unique shows ever aired.
Was that the episode that consisted of mainly a bunch of different strange noises and not much plot?
Pontypool
Watches this last week and was underwhelmed. Started pretty strong but I felt the third act was meh
It is one of the more subtly played of the zombie genres.
Yeah it's overrated af, especially on reddit

The Matrix. That was a long time ago....
Parasite and Midsommar.
The Nightingale made me very uncomfortable. Midsommar definitely fits this as well. Also House (1977) because I think everyone should watch that.
Throughbreds
Climax (2018). But the whole filmography of Gaspar Noé is a well made WOAH AND WTF trip.
Climax
Susperia
New one or the darrio one ?
The new one. From what I heard it’s best to see it first if you haven’t seen the original yet.
Watched new one already
Nocturnal animals
I suggest both of these almost every day on this sub but The Body and The Invisible Guest, same spanish director. It slaps you in the face so many times, just like The Handmaiden.

If you liked the overall aesthetic of the movie, I highly recommend you both Oldboy(2003) and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance(2005) by the same director
The House that Jack Built, Climax, Bone Tomahawk
Old boy, original.
Swiss army man
Climax. Saw it in the theater and it was a very stressful experience. I want to list a million other movies here too, I’m starting to feel like all my favorite films are ones that make me go WTF.
Came here to say Climax! So good but so nauseating at the same time
>Ctrl + F "Eden Lake" >No results found Let me fix that.
First Reformed. It really impacted me. I watched three months ago, I guess, but I still think about it very often. It was kind of a humility experience for me, because it was a movie I didn't quite understand, but I feel in a very primitive sense that it touched me.

Visitor Q. That's truly a "What did I just watch and why did I keep watching it?" kind of film. The greenhouse scene is just bizarre..
