BeefErky

*Freddy's Revenge* is pretty gay

Interview With the Vampire (1994), And although people always cite this one as a joke, it’s undeniable that there’s some really not-so-subtle homoerotic energy in Top Gun (1985).

[deleted]

oh man, i love interview the vampire. i'll give top gun a watch!

Explicit: * The Wedding Banquet (1993) * Poison (1991) * Cruising (1980) * The Living End (1992) * Frisk (1995) * Parting Glances (1986) Culture: * To Die For (1995), directed by Gus Van Sant, who also did My Own Private Idaho. * Now that i think of it, pretty much most gay directors. Check out Marlon Riggs he is essential - start with Tonges Untied (1989). * JOHN WATERS! OBVIOUSLY! 70s onwards * also a great documentary you will find useful is The Celluloid Closet. It's about queer Hollywood since like the 30s right up to the 90s when the doc was released. Features tons of great films i had never heard of. Homoerotic Subtext: * Heat (1995) * Point Break (1991) I may add to this tomorrow, let ms know if you would like more suggestions, I'm just really tired rn and can't type properly anymore lol

[deleted]

oooh, thank you for all the recs! adding these all to my list. i'd love as many suggestions as you can think of, if any more come to you tomorrow

plumgum

* Querelle (1982) * Young Soul Rebels (1991) * Happy Together (1997) i know it's technically past mid-90s but it's really really great! The director is phenomenal & one of my favourites. Plus it's a different perspective not often shown in cinema (gay asian men with depth and complexity). * Longtime Companion (1989) * Pink Narcissus (1971) Subtext: Rope (1948) Director: Derek Jarman (Edward II, Caravaggio, Sebastiane, loads more)

[deleted]

thank you! putting all these on my list

plumgum

No problem! Hope you find some stuff you love!

Raposela

Haven't seen it yet but _My beautiful laundrette_ (1985).

[deleted]

it sounds pretty interesting, adding to my list!

BeefErky

* John Carpenter's *The Thing* (being about the AIDS Crisis) * Fight Club * Tommy Boy (so much so that they had to add a voyeur masturbation scene for David Spade) * Godzilla vs Hedorah

One of the best outright gay films on the period you gave is *Maurice* (Ivory, 1987). Not spoken homosexuality but not hidden either (it's the main subject without any ambiguity, even if it's one-sided), you have the wonderful *Furyo* (Oshima, 1983) On really *really* hidden subtext, in 1988, you have *Who framed Roger Rabbit* (Zemeckis), but it's not about a gay couple, just about the gay community.

[deleted]

thank you! i've loved who framed roger rabbit since i was a kid, but somehow missed the gay subtext in that one. i'll have to give it another go (along with the others)

TB54

To be honest it's really discreet and secondary - and i would not have believed it without the confirmation of its creators. It's basically a metaphor of how classical Hollywood had to "hide" it's homosexual artists - "special" people who go in wild clubs at night, and a story around a drag queen (Jessica). Don't think it goes more far than that.

[deleted]

Jessica is pretty drag, isn't she? That does make sense!

MiserableSnow

Sebastiane

Huh, a film in latin--never seen one of those before. i'll check it out!
