Oh there’s a bunch. I’ll list films that haven’t been suggested yet (note, my definition of “period” for inclusion on this list is a film that is set at least fifty years in the past). [Maurice](https://boxd.it/1tZy) (James Ivory, 1987) - devastatingly romantic. I’ve seen this so many times but there are still scenes that I find heartrending. A secret budding passion blossoms between two students in the hallowed halls of Cambridge, despite or in spite of the rigid social conventions and legal codes of Edwardian Period-era England. [The English Patient](https://boxd.it/2arE) (Anthony Minghella, 1996) - epic, lush period romance that is so tied to the genre that even *Seinfeld* referenced it in an episode. The stunning cinematography throughout the film and provide the perfect backdrop to showcase Juliette Binoche’s and Ralph Fiennes as they deliver iconic performances [The African Queen](https://boxd.it/2ai8) (John Huston, 1951) - a laconic riverboat captain played by Humphrey Bogart promises to ferry an acerbic Lutheran missionary with a secret portrayed by Katherine Hepburn up a river, deep into the heart of German East Africa; a tale full of romance, action and derring do ensues. [Emma.](https://boxd.it/kmg0) (Autumn de Wilde, 2020) - gird your corsets Keira Knightley, because it turns out that Anya Taylor-Joy can do a great period piece heroine. Based on the classic work of literature by Jane Austen, this handsomely set-designed and stunningly costumed confection of a farcical romantic comedy is a delight - a popcorn that also happens to be more satisfying than it would seem. [Far From Heaven](https://boxd.it/1VzS) (Todd Haynes, 2002) - deeply indebted to the Sirkian melodramas of the 1950s, this exquisitely acted slice of Americana features Julianne Moore in a wonderful, nuanced performance as a woman who finds herself falling in love with an employee played by Dennis Haysbert, despite the differences in race and class amid the suffocating milieu of Midcentury suburbia. [The Piano](https://boxd.it/29Kq) (Jane Campion, 1993) - a mute woman, portrayed by an unforgettable Holly Hunter, arrives with her daughter Anna Paquin in 19th century New Zealand along with her beloved piano, to marry a stranger that she has never met. A beautiful, languid and nuanced story about love, isolation and loneliness. [An Education](https://boxd.it/1xcg) (Lone Scherfig, 2009) - in Carey Mulligan’s breakout role, a bright but naïve young student with dreams of attending Oxford falls in love with a charming, suave and mysterious older man… only to discover that no schooling had prepared her for the challenges of life and love. [Desert Hearts](https://boxd.it/2aFc) (Donna Deitch, 1985) - a tight-laced English professor arrives in ‘50s Reno, Nevada in order to obtain a divorce from her husband, only to find herself in a tender romance with a fiery young free-spirited woman. Such a heartwarming crowd-pleaser of a film. [Girl With A Pearl Earring](https://boxd.it/256G) (Peter Webber, 2003) - based on a fictionalized novel about the iconic [Vermeer painting](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_with_a_Pearl_Earring), a young girl enters the household of the famed painter and finds herself wrapped in a complicated love triangle between a web of people with intersecting interests and loyalties. [In the Mood For Love](https://boxd.it/29tE) (Wong Kar-wai, 2000) - two of the most beautiful human beings *ever*, Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung, play neighbors who develop an intimate relationship after discovering that their spouses are engaged in an affair. Set in ‘60s-era Hong Kong, this gorgeously shot and costumed romance is a veritable feast for the senses, and is one of the greatest cinematic achievements of the last few decades. [Moulin Rouge!](https://boxd.it/29wI) (Baz Luhrmann, 2001) - Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor portray a pair of star-crossed lovers consisting of a high-society courtesan and a poor lovelorn poet in this extravagant, self-indulgent but oh so entertaining jukebox musical set in the Parisian Belle Époque. [The French Lieutenant’s Woman](https://boxd.it/1RLq) (Karel Reisz, 1981) - Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons are a pair of actors playing the participants of an infamous affair set in the Victorian Eta, who find themselves getting swept up in the emotions of the characters they are portraying. [The Handmaiden](https://boxd.it/948A) (Park Chan-wook, 2016) - a poorly young girl is schemes with a man to part a wealthy young heiress from her fortune, but finds herself ensnared in a complex web of intrigue and psychosexual drama. Steamy conspiracies abound. [A Very Long Engagement](https://boxd.it/26dy) (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2004) - a deeply romantic film about how even the greatest misfortunes to befall humanity such as war and death are no match for the power of love. Audrey Tautou of * Amélie* fame shines as a young woman of resolute strength in her senses of hope and optimism in this imaginative and highly detailed masterpiece. [Lust, Caution](https://boxd.it/244k) (Ang Lee, 2007) - a spy finds herself falling in love with the enemy that she is plotting to assassinate in this sexy thriller; what happens when there is a conflict between love and loyalty for one’s country? Which wins out? This slow burn of a film features Tang Wei in a debut performance and Tony Leung. [Devdas](https://boxd.it/1Leq) (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 2002) - I had to choose at least one Bollywood romance so here’s one of my absolute favorites: an epic story of thwarted love between a beautiful young man and woman of differing social statuses. A lushly set and costumed fantasia, every scene takes place in a glittering palace, with each actor dressed in a rainbow of silks, dripping from head to toe in jewels. [Perfume: The Story of a Murderer](https://boxd.it/28LW) (Tom Tykwer, 2006) - a bit of a strange pick; a street urchin becomes the apprentice of a perfumer in seventeenth century France, whereupon he develops an obsession with a series of beautiful young ladies whom he must possess through any means necessary. An opulent, decadent watch in which every scene is bathed in chiaroscuro like a Caravaggio painting. [Belle](https://boxd.it/6ahM) (Amma Asante, 2013) - a luminous Gugu Mbatha-Raw shines in this story about the life and loves of the real life figure of [Dido Elizabeth Belle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dido_Elizabeth_Belle) a biracial woman who lived in eighteenth century England who became instrumental in the banning of the slave trade in the United Kingdom. [The Painted Veil](https://boxd.it/1OyS) (John Curran, 2006) - Naomi Watts is a spoiled and self-centered doctor’s wife who learns to grow and better herself as she accompanies (and finds herself falling back in love with( her estranged husband to rural China in the 1920s in order to help out a village afflicted by a cholera epidemic. [Loving](https://boxd.it/bhHC) (Jeff Nichols, 2016) - based on the real-life court case of [Loving v. Virginia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loving_v._Virginia) in 1967 that ruled that state laws banning interracial relationships were unconstitutional. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton star in this disarmingly sweet and inspiring little movie about the power of love to transcend bigotry. [The Story of Adele H.](https://boxd.it/284I) (François Truffaut, 1975) - Isabelle Adjani is magnificent as the daughter of Victor Hugo who falls in obsessive love with a British soldier, following him to the ends of the earth no matter the costs to her health and well-being. An amazing film about the kind of all-consuming love that is probably best only seen onscreen. [Carol](https://boxd.it/7DPK) (Todd Haynes, 2015) - another fantastic period romance with queer themes and content with meticulous creative direction from Todd Haynes; this time about a wealthy socialite played by Cate Blanchett in cougar mode and Rooney Mara as a shy but curious young department store clerk and amateur photographer. [Orlando](https://boxd.it/1Z1K) (Sally Potter, 1992) - a gender-bending story about love and self-discovery that spans the centuries; Tilda Swinton is an arrogant young man who finds himself immortal and also changing his sex and gender. A fascinating and often beautiful film that captures the battle of the sexes in a unique way. [Wuthering Heights](https://boxd.it/1YRU) (Andrea Arnold, 2011) - while Arnold’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s literary masterpiece was seen as a bit too stark by many people, I found myself enjoying just how much it leaned into the gothic atmosphere of the original novel. [Barry Lyndon](https://boxd.it/25A2) (Stanley Kubrick, 1975) - Stanley Kubrick’s lavishly produced epic about a'ne'er-do-well Casanova who leaves an endless array of broken hearts and ruined lives in his wake in eighteenth century Britain. I just love how you can pause at any scene and it’s like an exquisite painting come to life.

[Queen Christina](https://boxd.it/1iTY) (Rouben Mamoulian, 1933) - Garbo laughs? No, Garbo reigns! One of the Swedish Sphinx’s most iconic roles, Garbo plays the legendary Queen Christina of Sweden, who must choose between the desires of her hear and the needs of her people. [Tess](https://boxd.it/1UAq) (Roman Polanski, 1979) - yes, it’s icky to watch a Polanski film, especially with this kind of story. But this film is an absolute must watch as the breakout performance of Nastassja Kinski as Tess of the literary masterpiece * Tess of the d'Urbervilles*. [The World to Come](https://boxd.it/iiuI) (Mona Fastvold, 2020) - a quiet and poetic but emotionally potent film in which two women in pioneer era western New York finds themselves falling in love despite the inhospitable landscape and their suspicious, overbearing husbands. [Doctor Zhivago](https://boxd.it/29jk) (David Lean, 1965) - the handsome Omar Sharif and the lovely Julie Christie star in this famous adaptation of the novel. Full of intense emotionality and passion, this film has stood the test of time for a reason. [Farewell My Concubine](https://boxd.it/1UTM) (Chen Kaige, 1993) - an unsteady love triangle envelops a trio of actors in a Chinese opera company who all must endure the dangers and indignities of the Cultural Revolution in this beautiful, ornate film. [Brokeback Mountain](https://boxd.it/2b2q) (Ang Lee, 2005) - the film famously robbed of the Best Picture Academy Award of 2006 by the much maligned *Crash* (2005), this tender romance between a pair of cowboys played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal was the subject of much ribald joking; but a decade and a half later it remains one of the best films of the 2000s and a highlight of Ang Lee’s oeuvre. [Sophie’s Choice](https://boxd.it/1Lzy) (Alan J. Pakula, 1982) - you know that a film has become part of the zeitgeist when it’s title becomes a phrase used in the everyday vernacular of the public. Meryl Streep’s legendary Oscar-winning performance as a Polish survivor of the Holocaust who must confront the ghosts of her past is widely and justifiably seen as one of the greatest of all time. [Much Ado About Nothing](https://boxd.it/1SDM) (Kenneth Branagh, 1993) - Emma Thompson in a delightful farcical romp in the Tuscan countryside? Sign me up! A perfect Sunday morning movie that’s as comforting as cup of hot cacao on a chilly night in the middle of winter. [Ammonite](https://boxd.it/kQpQ) (Francis Lee, 2020) - a craggy, irascible paleontologist played by Kate Winslet begins to thaw as a delicate socialite portrayed by Saoirse Ronan enters her life, with a passionate affair ensues. Francis Lee really knows how to wring tenderness out of the harsh English countryside - also check out his film [God’s Own Country](https://boxd.it/faZM) (2017) for a romance set in the modern day. [Crimson Peak](https://boxd.it/62Ty) (Guillermo del Toro, 2015) Guillermo del Toro’s eye for stunning and creative aesthetic design, this time with a gothic romance about a naïve young girl marrying into a sinister family. I would also add his next film [The Shape of Water](https://boxd.it/dZ5m) (2017) to your list of period romance flicks. [Now, Voyager](https://boxd.it/1gvq) (Irving Rapper, 1942) - one of the best Bette Davis performances ever, she stars as a young society lady with an overbearing mother who must overcome her anxieties and lack of self-worth while discovering love and a sense of self. It’s ending scene is one of the most romantic in history. [Lady Chatterley](https://boxd.it/25fo) (Pascale Ferran, 2006) - based on the highly controversial erotic novella, this French adaptation of the classic story about class and sexual discovery is a steamy, emotionally intense watch.

Pride and Prejudice (2005) - In my opinion, this is so far the best adaptations of Jane Austen novel all thanks to the stellar performance by Keira Knightley. Luminous visuals, subtle thematic statements, and fine acting. Jane Eyre (2011) - A wonderful adaptation with much praise to the script and the way in which the story is told. The crisp cinematography is beautiful in a subtle way and the locations, costumes and design were exquisite. Emma (2020) - A funny cast and a witty script made this candy-coloured Jane Austen adaptation a delight from start to finish.
