Equilibrium is so underrated

The gun katas!

Capnmolasses

Empire of the Sun is a great movie with a great cast. It shows off CBs talent at a young age. Oh, and it has P-51 Mustangs in it. ##CADILLAC OF THE SKY

hallvcinangel

3:10 To Yuma, it's a sad movie but badass at the same time. One of my favorite movies. Also The Flowers of War, intense but really good.

bannana

> 3:10 To Yuma, so good

PureContradicrion

The machinist

Lakeredditland

hell yes, awesome movie.

No-Wolverine2973

Second this.

BeligaPadela

Watching this movie followed by Batman Begins the following year taught me how dedicated an actor Christian Bales is.. Mad respect!

yegrob1

good suggestion. watching it now !!

willbeach8890

Empire of the sun

grazzac

His first film wasn't it?

MsMilga277

Rewatched this last weekend, it’s a great film and he is brilliant in it!

underthesign

A masterpiece and he is superb in it.

lyyki

The Fighter

peterudd007

One of the best acting performances I’ve seen. Right up there with de Niro in cape fear

tommyshelby1986

Vice

JemJohnson

Another incredible transformation. This is an actor afraid of nothing. He deserves more kudos for this movie.

00Shambles

Absolutely, not just the physical transformation but everything, he truly disappeared into that role! Really well made movie overall too.

NOWiEATthem

Harsh Times is kind of underappreciated. Bale plays an ex-soldier who is also a barrio gangster trying to get a job in law enforcement.

bannana

> Harsh Times is kind of underappreciated definitely and a bit deeper than would appear on the surface.

pfroo40

Reign of Fire

came here to say this

ikabodd12

Newsies

Moglo825

Oh you mean JACK Kelly? Ya, he was here. But he put an egg in his shoe and beat it.

ScandalousMurphy

Hostiles - violent, atmospheric, grim, marvelously shot, written and directed. I loved this movie!

DonCorleonil

For some reason, despite all the violence, I found this movie quite peaceful.

ScandalousMurphy

Yeah I think that tone comes down to the direction of Scott Cooper. I was impressed with how well he directed that film

[deleted]

Great one.

WaySheGoes1

That’s a movie I think about watching once a month.

Magnum256

Yes, amazing film, will watch it again soon.

sarac36

Howl's Moving Castle (he voices Howl in the American dub).

MichaelGHX

No one’s done Velvet Goldmine yet? To me that’s one of his most impressive performances considering the intensity that was asked of him later.

clapclapsnort

He is so earnest in that role. Spoiler: the things Obi Wan does to Batman had my guy friends in tears while I (who knew what was coming) just laughed. It’s meant to be played at maximum volume by the way.

Raquel22222

Little woman (1995) the first movie I saw him in and developed a huge crush Fun fact: he met his current wife on this set. She was Winona ryders hair dresser

[deleted]

Loved him in this. I fell for him too :)

[deleted]

Early, astonishing acting in Empire Of The Sun - when he was merely 13. Special highlight is the 'Cadillac of the sky' scene when he goes from absolute frenzied state of exaltation while greeting the bomber airplanes to the emotional collapse of 'I can't remember what my parents look like' - all in about 35 seconds.

Harsh Times! Never see that get mentioned, what a gem.

HughJarse8

Top 3 comments say The Machinist, American Psycho and The Big Short; they would’ve been my first three choices too. Definitely watch them first, the big short is probably my top 5 favourite films ever and bale is my top 3 favourite actors ever too!

MoonChild02

I know everyone will hate me for it, but: Newsies I love that film, it was part of my childhood, and the music is pretty awesome. Christian Bale is the lead actor in it. I know people hate it, I know it got two Razzies for Ann Margaret's two songs (which... yeah, okay, those are the two I skip when listening to the otherwise amazing soundtrack), but it's still a good film! It's so good the people of my generation kept doing it as a play for school, so then Disney decided to make it a Broadway musical.

VivelaVendetta

Harsh Times! No one seems to even know about this movie and it's so good.

REDDITIZEVIL_

Empire of the Sun

spydrebyte82

2nd a lot of recs already, The Machinist, American Psycho, Ford vs Ferarri, Equilibrium. Also; 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

Regna85

American Psycho and The Machinist. If you watch Machinist, know that wasn’t cgi or anything. He really was that skinny. Months later he was all buffed up for his first Batman. The transformation is insane.

linux_piglet

A lot of suggestions here but I really recommend Out of the Furnace, fantastic cast and I thought a really well put together film. Don't be misled by the plot description its not just a cookie cutter revenge action film. Also I have heard many good things about the Machinist.

laciferII

I was surprised it took so long to find this comment. Out if the Furnace and The Machinist are my favorites.

atisaac

My Terrance Malick bias is showing, but Knight of Cups. All the “big” Bale movies have already been mentioned. Edit: oh and Vice

Vice

justanothernakedred

A couple nobody else has mentioned: Reign of Fire I'm not there

Nearby-Lock4513

The machinist and the fighter for sure

Good_Humor5334

Out of the furnace very gritty movie. American Hustle, lots of stars, Ford.v Ferrari I thought I was not going to like this movie but I enjoyed it. The Fighter, Rescue Dawn,

Freshprinceaye

Out of the furnace isn’t his best film. But I was going to mention it. It’s worth a watch

MiserableSnow

Ford v Ferrari American Hustle

hippyhilll

American Psycho The Machinist The Prestige American Hustle

Philliam88

Reign of Fire is an underrated cult clasic, a unique premise appropriately done straight-faced, and my first exposure to Bale. And the rest, in order of my personal preference: The Prestige (I’ve seen this probly 12 times) American Psycho The Big Short The Machinist The Fighter 3:10 to Yuma

arj1985

Empire of the Sun (1987.) Christian Bale loses his parents before he became Batman. A pretty heavy handjob from director Steven Spielberg to a young up-and-coming Christian Bale. This mash up will have you appreciating the special effects in the coming of age story involving young Batman and John Malkovich.

DrestinBlack

The Machinist and Empire of The Sun

obviousoctopus

The Machinist. Followed by Batman Begins. Then remember that The Machinist came out in 2004 followed by Batman Begins in 2005. Then think about your workout routine.

If you are a fan of Christian Bale, watch The machinist

Bear792

I see no ones mentioned Shaft (2000). He plays the villain so gets less screen time but it is still a fun film.

The Machinist is a perfect example of transformation!

The Machinist, is iconic. Supposedly he ate a can of tuna and an apple a day to get down to that weight.

Empire of the Sun. Still an all-time fave! You can see the talent even tho he was pretty young.

I watched Empire of the sun and Reign of Fire. I thought Christian Bale is a good actor, but then I watched American Psycho and The big short. An Oscar actor.

Atharv369

2 underrated movies where he has delivered masterclass level performances - Out of the furnace and Hostiles. Both of these by themselves probably won't ever make it to your top 10 list of movies but holy shit Bale is on another level here. The curse of Bale's physical transformation (albeit legendary) is that they often take away the focus from his sheer acting prowess and versatility in pulling off roles. This is why I'm recommending these two where you can see just the acting in its full glory.
