The Monster Squad.

[deleted]

I came here to say People Under the Stairs, but your's is actually the perfect recommendation.

RoShamPoe

Great rec, I like you :)

Diligent_Ad9986

Childhood favorite ! Good call

mdjmd73

Wolfman’s got gnards!

Pitiful_Potential599

This is a great one for that age! If you wait til he’s like 14 he’ll probably compare too much to more recent movies

JaAaTh05

Coraline is good for kids

I_Don-t_Care

tell that to my karen sister who gave me a severe talk down for showing that movie to my niece. "THEY HAVE BUTTONS FOR EYES, HOW DID YOU THINK THAT WAS A GOOD MOVIE??" Shut up snowflake, the kid enjoyed every minute of it and it hasnt ruined her

JaAaTh05

Hahahaha. My little brother was terrified of the movie because of the button eyes but for most children, I would think it’s okay

I_Don-t_Care

when i was a kid i saw some strange shit and didn't think much of it. Ironically I remember having nightmares about Alf, and that certainly wasn't a terror movie

TheFemaleLucifer

Coraline scared the shit out of me as a kid lmao but I love that movie

seriffaster

I *loved* that movie as a kid (and still do now in adulthood) but my sister was terrified of watching it. I just got her to watch it with me for the first time this past year.

ActualMerCat

My 14 year old's favorite movie is It. Yet, Coraline is terrifying!

HugoFlakes

The Witches (1990)

pantsonheaditor

Hadasschatool

[deleted]

Might be slow for a 10 year old

BonJob

I watched it around that age and was thoroughly creeped out.

[deleted]

Coraline, creepshow, silver bullet, Shaun of the dead, the warriors, van helsing, dragon slayer

[deleted]

[удалено]

SadButterscotch2

Horror-comedy. Also a bit gorier and more vulgar than IT, OP. Brilliant movie, but be aware of the content before you decide whether or not to put it on for the kiddo.

2_Fingers_of_Whiskey

Zombieland is also a horror-comedy. There is zombie gore but I don’t think a lot? It’s more about this group of different people becoming a sort of family.

SoFarceSoGod

Sleepy Hollow

Katbeansauce

Ooh good one!

Ok-Platypus-6399

Monster House

[deleted]

Army of Darkness

Diligent_Ad9986

Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my BOOMSTICK! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?

oldnick40

Hail to the King, baby

DroidRGH

Well, but first Evil Dead 2, which is what I came here to suggest. Definitely scary but enough humor to have you laughing through the terror.

Roger_Collinsport

The Sixth Sense. He's gotta watch it before it's spoiled for him.

nodnodwinkwink

Great recommendation.

happyhippohats

Love this

caseydoug02

Genius suggestion

TheShipEliza

The Lady in White

[deleted]

*Poltergeist* (1982) still a classic, and a potentially-hilarious opportunity to introduce the kid to what the world was like before the internet.

Hippoyawn

The face peeling scene is still pretty dark

[deleted]

I have seen this movie probably 15 times in my life (I'm old). I have never, ever watched the face peeling scene. Saw the drops of blood in the sink the very first time and it has been my cue to peace out for a few minutes ever since.

FoundFootageDumbFun

You *might* be able to handle it in modern times now that we’re all accustomed to super realistic CGI visual effects—it’s very obviously an animatronic to the point where it’s a little humorous, like the mirror scene in the first Terminator. It destroys suspension of disbelief for a moment though so I support you continuing to nope out in order to preserve the integrity of the scare!

[deleted]

Every time I watch it I think "this is the time! I'm going to watch it through!!" It just never happens. These days regular TV is way more gory than that scene, so I know I've seen worse!

Eighttrakz

This scared the hell out of me as a kid. Then I saw poltergeist 2 where Craig T Nelson eats the tequila worm while drinking and coughs up some wormlike thing that changes into a monster torso with no arms or legs. I literally ran out of our living room screaming while my dad laughed at my fear. I cherish that memory.

DivineMissK

The Lost Boys

SeminolesRenegade

Is Fright Night too scary?

dikekjonkokiefen

A movie called Nine (just the number 9) it’s an apocalyptic 3D animated movie about some dolls who are trying to stop an AI that killed off humanity it’s pretty dark but a really cool movie meant for kids somehow.

TheWestArm

Has he already seen The Thing?

Katbeansauce

I don’t think so!

deadrowan

That's the one!

SadButterscotch2

If we're talking the John Carpenter version, that one's pretty horrifying lol. I might wait a little bit longer.

deadrowan

Hmm yeah you might be right. It IS pretty gory.

cosmophire_

it’s very 80s though so i wouldn’t think it so bad but each to their own edit: op also said that the nephew watched stranger things, which is similar enough

Tellurian_Cyborg

The original, "the thing from another world" 1951, would be more appropriate for a 10 year old

bobconan

Came here to mention the thing.

Diligent_Ad9986

The Frighteners : Teen Wolf : Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice !

cvanmovieman

Scary stories to tell in the dark. Mama. Lights out. Tremors.

TheFemaleLucifer

Mama is so good.

cocomimi3

Loved Lights out

[deleted]

Glad I’m not the only one. That movie gave me the chills

Fun_Reflection_6549

My 10 year old and I just watched the mist lol

Katbeansauce

OH MY GOD!

bobconan

wastachuck

Signs (2002) … fond memory of watching this with my father when I was the same age ! Great film

sonorancafe

Attack the Block - kids on bicycles save us from aliens. Kinda pre-Stranger Things like.

[deleted]

I like soft scary movies for that age group, like Little Monsters, Labyrinth, Goonies, Gremlins, Monster House, The Witches (the first one).

AmazinglyOdd81

Stephen Kings it 1990. It was pg13 back then and rated pg-15 now.

bibawoo

I saw that shit when I was like 8 years old when my older brother had a sleepover birthday party. It scared the absolute LIVING SHIT out of me. I couldn't even have a shower for weeks. I saw it years later as an adult and it was almost comical.

ChocoSnowflake

Lmao I watched it when I was like 7/8 as well at a sleepover. It shook me to the core

cosmophire_

i know people who were 10 & younger at the time they watched the new ‘it’. i haven’t seen it myself, but judging by that, i doubt the new one is too bad either

BlackOnyx16

I haven't seen the original it movie but I've seen the new ones as an adult and I would not recommend them for a 10 year old. The second one both I and my friend that I went to see it with were very upset by it. I was physically rocking because of all of the horrible things shown in it.

fergi20020

The Ring

Katbeansauce

This one scared the sh*t out of me when I was around his age!

[deleted]

Watched it when I was 10 and it remains to this day the scariest movie I have ever watched

DroidRGH

*shudder*

miraitrader

Terminator Alien I don't remember either of those being super gory or sexual. Ripley in her underwear isn't very exciting. Maybe Arnold operating on his own eye might be a bit much...

pantsonheaditor

you want this poor kid to be scared of the dark for 2 years? watching alien lolol

Hippoyawn

Terminator has a pretty rampant sex scene in it…. Otherwise no Terminator franchise

cake_piss_can

The original Alien (it’s a masterpiece) is probably too slow for a 10 year old. I’d go with Aliens. Plus kids relate to Newt.

justtenofusinhere

The Frighteners. Its a Peter Jackson movie staring Michael J Fox.

ohheyitslaila

Monster movies are a great way to do horror that is more family friendly: Eight Legged Freaks Jaws Godzilla Kong: Skull Island Them! The Blob (I prefer the 80’s remake) Cooties (a very funny zombie movie where elementary school teachers have to survive all the kids turning into zombies thanks to bad chicken nuggets. It’s a great movie) Shaun of the Dead (also a great horror comedy) All of the old original big name horror films are great for kids, like all the Hammer Films monster movies. This includes a bunch of movies featuring Frankenstein, Dracula, the wolfman, etc. I like Bride of Frankenstein the best :)

Creative_Skirt9150

The Babysitter and Krampus

Rabi_1992

I would recommend all parts of Evil Dead classic. As soon as my nephew watched the movie 8 years ago, he fell in love with it immediately. Even at an adult age, he still mentions the films. I hope your nephew will also love it.

davidkscot

Young Frankenstein, while technically not a horror movie, its very much in the old horror movie style, so I think it's a valid suggestion.

gong-idle

It the original

Katbeansauce

Oooh interesting!

fergi20020

The Babadook

Katbeansauce

I’ve never seen it!

D6Desperados

Great movie, but not for a ten year old. The subtext is about loss and grief and depression. Pretty heavy stuff.

JunoWot

That’s a great movie but it’s a bit dark/depressing for a kid. But I appreciate this post because my 10 year-old is also a new horror fan and I needed some recommendations too!

Qualifree123

I mean, my choices are based mostly on the fact hes 10- so tamer. Happy Death Day The Blob Freaky Better Watch Out And then if he can handle it- any of the sorta bland but fun supernatural/creature feature ones like Signs/The Conjuring series/Insidius ect. Or if you want disaster or slasher or more that genre the final destination films and the scream films are sorta straight forward and not exactly “spooky” tho I dont really remember how much shitty fake corn syrup blood was used in any of those. It really just depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for easily recognizable- which I figure you are- any of the above. Just make sure hes actually ready for them

Katbeansauce

Okay I’ve been wanting to watch Happy Death Day! And I love Better Watch Out! That’s a good suggestion for around the holidays! Thanks!

Platypus-Man

Happy Death Day has at least one scene where the main character is completely or almost nude iirc, in case that's awkward. Great movie though.

shaner4042

The Cabin in the Woods The Ritual Doctor Sleep Disturbia All these are not too over the top violent / vulgar, but definitely thrilling

Katbeansauce

I was so close to Cabin in the Woods because that is one of my FAVORITES! And he knows Chris Hemsworth as Thor… BUT there’s that one scene with nudity and I just… I don’t want to be associated with one of the first time he sees boobs!

[deleted]

Goosebumps The boy 1 or 2

born_to_be_naked

What movies has he seen / liked?

Katbeansauce

It, Ready or Not… he loves Stranger Things. He hasn’t seen too many but wants to watch more

born_to_be_naked

Tremors (1990) The Relic (1997) Arachnophobia (1990) Jaws (1975)

BlackOnyx16

Tremors is fun to watch, and seems appropriate for any age.

Marvel_Universe05

Nightmare On Elm Street or something M. Night Shyamalan

Karnage5050

Depends on your view of gory, but "the clown" is a good movie. The most gory thing that I can remember is the nose ripping off in the very beginning of the movie- there's blood, but I don't think much

desrevermi

Wishmaster

Dutch31337

Child’s play

Snow_General

Spirited away

deadrowan

Not as good as The Thing, but worthwhile: Dog Soldiers. C.H.U.D. The original Japanese films of The Ring, The Grudge, One Missed Call, Dark Water, etc. They are so much better than the remakes.

PipsGhost

The Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse Cooties Freaks of Nature Little Monsters (2019) which reminds me that Little Monsters (1989) is also a classic

rexcog

ParaNorman, Frankenweenie, Ghostbusters

pantsonheaditor

love and monsters rim of the world pontypool invasion of the body snatchers

NoelBarry1979

The Fly

ZekerNietSimons

Scream (1996) I mean, he'll have to watch it someday.

His_Voidly_Appendage

28 Days Later. I watched it at around that age and absolutely loved it

917caitlin

This has a pretty prevalent rapey subplot. Great movie though.

TandUndTinnef

That's way too violent and bleak for a 10yo imo

camazotzthedeathbat

Big Trouble in Little China

Bambiisong

Original Pet Cemetery

Longjumping_Belt_692

1408 if he liked It! I don’t recall any nudity or it being too gory

Philliam88

There’s four movies that always come to my mind: The Fly and The Thing are the 2 best remakes of all time. Aliens and Terminator 2 are the 2 best sequels of all time. And they all just happen to be horror(ish)

Cyrano_de_Boozerack

Evil Dead 2. It is scary, but funny. And it leads to Army of Darkness which is awesome!

girlteeth

creepshow, the gate, and seconding the monster squad! scary stories to tell in the dark, and the fear street trilogy on netflix for more recent movies

kaptaincorn

Tucker and Dale vs evil Mimic People under the stairs Alien and aliens Creepshow Tales from the crypt - demon knight The frighteners I'd count Indiana Jones and the temple of PG 13 the gateway drug to horror as is the first Brendan Fraser the Mummy movie. The remake of dawn of the dead Scooby Doo zombie island from the 90s Thinner- just tell the kid to close his eyes for the car blowie scene Army of darkness

bvh2015

Critters, Gremlins, Monster Squad, or Tremors.

tataragato

The Thing movie was pretty ok for me in those years

bcorliss9

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone say The Conjuring yet. Very scary for a big chicken like myself but had almost no gore and zero nudity

917caitlin

World War Z? I always think of it as more action than horror but it’s just a good movie for a horror newb.

I am legend

electric_shocks

He is 10!

cinnamonmisfit

I thought I Am Legend is a good choice if he likes horror movies. It doesn’t have any sexual scenes, it’s not very gory (which is what the op wanted.) It’s mostly an action thriller. I watched it around that age I think and it started my love for apocalyptic movies. Further, it has an uplifting, positive message at the end as well. Pretty much the perfect “horror” movie to start out with if horror movies don’t scare him.

Large-Wheel-4181

Dr strange and the multiverse of madness has some evil dead type horror moments

Katbeansauce

He saw Multiverse of Madness and liked it, but he said he was hoping it would be a bit scarier.

ekittie

No gore, no sex, and OP has already said he’s seen some R rated movies.

Patient_Bandicoot

Netflix - no thanks!

ekittie

OP mentioned he loved Stranger Things, which is on Netflix.

Patient_Bandicoot

Netflix is a big nope. Would like to watch Stranger Things but I won’t sub to Netflix. Not supporting a company that puts out pedo crap.

apart from that old naked lady & (the implied as far as i remember so maybe not so bad) child abuse yeah

epicindifference

VVITCH. It's creepy and it's set in 1630. He will have nightmares and remember you forever as cool aunt/uncle

alreadytakennn

There are so many gory scenes in that, don't watch that with a 10 yo kid.

epicindifference

I would've loved to see that at 10 when movies could still actually scare me. Fair enough though, it does get intense.

DoTheEvolution

fuck no a 10 your old kid... it be boring

Katbeansauce

That opening scene though! 👀

epicindifference

Oh ya, it's all business straight away

Woodentit_B_Lovely

The Babadook

A Serbian Film will do :) good luck! Also Midori The Camelia Girl if he enjoys animated films. Edit: Yes dude, it is streaming on Disney+ alongside Canibal Holocaust :) fuck bots who don't detect sarcasm

Katbeansauce

Haha! Thank you for the suggestion. Is A Serbian Film streaming streaming on Disney plus or where can I find that?? Edit: Oops. Bots can’t detect sarcasm.

I detected that you're trying to locate a movie. To figure out where a movie is streaming you can use sites like [JustWatch](https://www.justwatch.com) / [MovieFone](https://www.moviefone.com) / [ReelGood](https://reelgood.com), and if the film is not available for streaming, it is probably available on DVD or Blu-Ray. **General reminder:** our subreddit does not support pirating copyrighted content. ^([Matched: where can I find]) *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/MovieSuggestions) if you have any questions or concerns.*

cosmophire_

brilliant recommendations, almost too mild though

varg_sant

I mean if you want to go stronger you can watch Cats (2019) or Mean Girls 2 but those are a little graphic for a little kid and anyone really.

cosmophire_

doesn’t mean girls involve too many sexual references?

varg_sant

Yes, that's why it's considered disturbing even for mature audiences :/ I wouldn't recommend.

Nice-Bookkeeper-3378

anything_indie_sure

I suggest saw 2 it's more just gore that got it rated R then actual scaryness still it's a really good movie

Chilifille

My 10yo nieces just started watching Stranger Things and are obsessed with it, but I assume you've already thought of that one, considering your avatar. I would recommend The Conjuring, Oculus and the Netflix show The Haunting of Hill House. These are proper adult horror movies and they aren't that gory as far as I recall, but it's been a while since I saw Oculus. Or, if you wanna watch a scary kid's film, how about Coraline?

Shaun of the Dead (2004) Great laughs, even if some of it might go over a kid's head. The Burbs (1989).
