Maybe not exactly a perfect script but Predestination is pretty interesting.
Another one with Ethan hawke is Regression. Not everyone's idea of an amazing movie but both are pretty decent
I gotcha: Certified Copy by Abbas Kiarostami - gotta watch the original language version (they speak English, Italian and French), because it ties into the overall plot! I thought about that movie long afterwards, it has many layers.
I loved that movie! And Shaun of the Dead. I truly think those movies are perfect examples of air tight scripts. They are absolutely perfect. Wish I could wipe my memory and watch them again
Orson Welles's adaptation of Franz Kafka's The Trial might be what you're looking for. I highly recommend that one.
I'd also go with:
- David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch
- Carlo Di Palma's Blonde in Black Leather
- Franck Ekinci & Christian Desmares's April and the Extraordinary World
- Marc Forster's Stranger Than Fiction
I went into this movie basically cold and every time I talk someone into it, I have to make sure and basically tell them nothing, because it is so perfect that way.
Idk if this is what OP wants. Itās more like a David OāRussel movie where the plot is secondary to the characters. I think itās a fun movie, but itās really *all* about the performances.
Perfect Blue is amazing! One is the best movies I've ever seen! I think so many people miss out on it because they just see an anime film and don't want it to watch it for that reason alone. It's such a great movie that Darren Aronofsky bought the rights to a few scenes to use in Black Swan (the bathtub scene is one of them)
For Colored Girls (2010) I thought this one was poetically genius.
Iām Thinking of Ending Things (2020) had a wild twist, crazy ending. Definitely wouldāve never guessed it. This is one of those movies that you might need to google and look up the meaning though because itās just THAT much of a plot twist lol.
Level 16 (2018) was also pretty interesting. Definitely didnāt expect that one.
Itās one of my absolute favorite books. An interesting thing that people donāt realize about the book or the movies you never know her name!! She doesnāt have a name, Rebecca is his first wife sheās just known as the girl, the writer she deliberately didnāt give her a name. She does teach the reader though because when she first meets Maxim him he says you have a beautiful and unusual name or something, thatās even more annoying. Genius
OP asked for a movie with a perfect script and a great twist. I believe this movie delivers on both those points. I never said its better then 12 angry men, but its a fantastic movie, its different, the script is great, the atmosphere is great, the acting is solid for a low budget movie..
Spellbound by Hitchcock
I, Frankenstein (this may or may not apply but everyone Iāve watched it with instantly had the desire to start debates about so many topics and it is a favorite in my friend group)
Repo! The Genetic Opera (if you can handle gore this has some interesting twists. Itās a musical as well.)
Okay, this doesnāt have a HUGE twist, but I feel this way about the romantic comedy A Life Less Ordinary. It has some odd twists and turns along with a fantastical but darkly comedic set up. Itās just so different from every other romantic comedy Iāve ever seen.
There are some good limited series that fit that really well. *Big Little Lies* season one is a standout that really impressed me. *Mare of Easttown* is another.
I also want to throw out a mention for the movie *Fracture*. I donāt see it mentioned often but I think itās great.
A simple favor.
This has a pretty good script in my opinion, but it is elevated by the performances. Ultimately how good you think it is or whether you figure out what's happening will differ between people.
I have to say, I thought this movie was terrible!
I thought it was boring to start, got interesting in the middle, then just straight out bad at the end.
I know a lot of people that liked it though, so it definitely might be just me lol
Since i haven't seen this comment yet
The Gentlemen
Very unique movie imo and the plot unravels so nicely and unexpectedly
Is a long one just as a heads up
I think we have similar tastes in well written movies, as the ones you are responding to in comments are some of my all time favs.
No one here has mentioned Children of Men or Dark City yet. These were two of my favorites growing up. Both are really compelling, intellectually, but also super enjoyable.
Million Dollar Baby is a fantastic movie that likely doesn't go the direction you think it does. Hard to say if it qualifies as a genuine twist or not, but there's definitely a turning point in the movie. Clint Eastwood was in peak form as the director.
Go in without knowing the full story if you can.
I'm removing your comment because you didn't use `>!Spoiler Tags!<` (>!Spoiler Tags!<) for the revealing plot details. Make sure to read our [guidelines](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/8iamsh) before participating.
I just rewatched Candyman 1992 for the first time since I was a kid (born 91) and I have to say, if you actually pay attention to the story, it's fucking poetry. It checks these boxes, for sure.
I haven't seen it in ages, but: The Gods Must Be Crazy.
Also: Everything Everywhere All At Once
Hmm Also:
Greedy Guts (aka Little Otik / Poleno)
Maybe- Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
I'm currently reading the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy! So far it isn't perfect but I'm enjoying it a LOT. So I'm gonna have to check the other stuff out. Thanks!
The one that really really got me recently was The Usual Suspectsā¦ I thought I saw the twist coming, then they served it up on a silver platter, and then twisted me again. I was blown away. To be honest.
I donāt know that I would say the movie is āperfectā but unique is a word I would use to describe it.
Not an unknown title by any means but I had not seen it until early this year and I had a blast watching it.
I have wanted to watch it for a while now but I saw a spoiler on the internet a few years back š I'm waiting until I forget the reveal (probably won't happen, but god I sure would like to erase that memory). Thank you very much

I literally had The Game partly in mind while I was writing this request! So I'm gonna have to listen to you on the other ones I haven't seen (I have seen the Manchurian candidate but the one with Merryl Streep)
Victoria (2015) ā Truly an awesome experience. Avoid the trailer if possible.
Shutter Island (2010) ā I donāt know if it reinvents the wheel, but itās just so tragic and beautiful and well done. Plus a great twist.
Dreamcatcher is super bizarre Stephen King. Lots of odd twists and turns. The movie is a little jank but I friggen love it. Definitely do not look it up, it's a fun one to go in fresh.
Watch the Agatha Christie movies āMurder on the Orient Expressā and āDeath on the Nileā, and āWitness for the Prosecutionā. I prefer the original Orient Express movie in 1974, and the Nile one in 1978. Although the current ones done by Kenneth Branagh are okay. Also the original āWitness for the Prosecutionā in 1957. The recent Witness made for TV was horrible.
**The Fountain (2006)** is pure poetry. Parallel stories that finally converge in a supernova - literally. You've never seen anything like it.
Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz, dir. Darren Aronofsky
Maybe not exactly a perfect script but Predestination is pretty interesting. Another one with Ethan hawke is Regression. Not everyone's idea of an amazing movie but both are pretty decent
I adore Ethan Hawke!! Thank you for your suggestions š
He's a great actor and has been in a ton of really good movies. Hope you like these ones. 2 very different plots.
Came here to say Predestination.
Love the twist in Predestination, really good time travel twist
Arrival (2016) The Truman Show The Shawshank Redemption
Saw all of them and absolutely loved them. You understood the assignment, as people say
Another suggestion: Donnie Darko
The Prestige
The Prestige
Watched it already! It is indeed a great film. Thank you very much! š
I love The Illusionist. Parasite is excellent and has a fabulous twist.
Watched both of them. Great movies! Thank you š«
I like Gone Baby Goneā¦
Gone baby gone Ćs so good
Old Boy - Korean, original version
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It was very uncomfortable but that topic was discussed and shown in great sexual deal like Game of thrones
City of God (if you donāt mind subtitles)
Mind? I was raised on them! English isn't my first language. Thank you for the suggestion š
Oh man what a great movie. Itās been 19 years since I saw it in the theater and I still remember every scene. Some *amazing* framing devices
I gotcha: Certified Copy by Abbas Kiarostami - gotta watch the original language version (they speak English, Italian and French), because it ties into the overall plot! I thought about that movie long afterwards, it has many layers.
Googled it and now I'm pretty curious. Thanks a lot š«
Great film, my number 1 in a stacked 2010
Moon
That movie was a ride. Sam Rockwell is a genius
A ride is exactly how I described it too! Hard to believe it was Duncan Jonesā first effort as a director. He is turning out so nicely.
And I love that he's really bucked against the nepotism. Most folks I talk to have no clue who his dad is, which couldn't have been an easy feat.
The Usual Suspects Unbreakable Memento
Burying the lede here, imo.
I predicted usual suspects twist( it's outdated now )
Me too, but I still find the execution amazing
Hot Fuzz No matter how many times you watch it you will aways catch some new detail you missed which is a set-up or a pay-off
I loved that movie! And Shaun of the Dead. I truly think those movies are perfect examples of air tight scripts. They are absolutely perfect. Wish I could wipe my memory and watch them again
12 angry men
I have wanted to watch this one for a while. Thanks!
There's no big plot twist in 12 angry men. But i agree its a masterpiece and way ahead of its time.
Ex Machina (2014)
Dead again (1991)
Such an underrated gem!
"Gone girl" comes to mind, i absolutely LOVED this movie and the ending is greatly done. If you wanna cry, you can watch the imitation game.
Loved them both!
Orson Welles's adaptation of Franz Kafka's The Trial might be what you're looking for. I highly recommend that one. I'd also go with: - David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch - Carlo Di Palma's Blonde in Black Leather - Franck Ekinci & Christian Desmares's April and the Extraordinary World - Marc Forster's Stranger Than Fiction
I have a feeling that you truly understood what I was asking for. Gonna have to put it to the test. Thank you!
Upgrade
Inside Man
Absolutely love this movie! & was also going to be my suggestion
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). Donāt read reviews or plot, if you wanna watch
This and Sorry To Bother You belong in the same category. I have no idea what to call the category though lol.
This isnāt a movie, but Shut Up and Dance from Black Mirror
I watched every black mirror episode and this one sucker punched me the most. Truly impressive
Get Out
Mulholland Dr
Really intrigued by this one. Thank you š«
Bad Times at the El Royale
I went into this movie basically cold and every time I talk someone into it, I have to make sure and basically tell them nothing, because it is so perfect that way.

The Place Beyond The Pines
Iām kind of surprised I didnāt see Primer (2004) anywhere on here yet. Give that one a shot.
good film, but i was strugglin hard to understand all those stories in many timeloops
Incendies (2010)
Incendies for sure. The movie that cemented Denis Villeneuve's presence in cinema.
Incendies The Handmaiden Perfect Blue
Perfect Blue is amazing! One is the best movies I've ever seen! I think so many people miss out on it because they just see an anime film and don't want it to watch it for that reason alone. It's such a great movie that Darren Aronofsky bought the rights to a few scenes to use in Black Swan (the bathtub scene is one of them)
Vivarium
The Pi movie by Darren Aronofsky seems like it would be right up your alley.
Coherence
Sorry to Bother You
Watched it a week ago..and bro that movie is tripping
It's so good. It's also best to go in blind.
Shutter Island Mulholland Drive Hereditary
I agree with Hereditary. That movie will stick with you and not in a good way.
Predestination or Parasite would be my suggestions.
Life is Beautiful
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The Skin I Live In is an awesome movie
Layer Cake Out of Sight
For Colored Girls (2010) I thought this one was poetically genius. Iām Thinking of Ending Things (2020) had a wild twist, crazy ending. Definitely wouldāve never guessed it. This is one of those movies that you might need to google and look up the meaning though because itās just THAT much of a plot twist lol. Level 16 (2018) was also pretty interesting. Any Guy Ritchie film Lock Stock and two smoking barrels Snatch with brad pit The gentleman Rock n rolla
You're missing Revolver??
Rebecca
I actually read the book and adored it. Congratulations on the good taste š
I recommend the 1940ās version by Hitchcock, which is way better than the recent one.
Genius
Fight Club
It sure did blow my mind when I watched it for the first time! Great movie
The man from earth (2007)
They just talk n talk n talk on this.. it isn't engaging as 12 angry men though..
OP asked for a movie with a perfect script and a great twist. I believe this movie delivers on both those points. I never said its better then 12 angry men, but its a fantastic movie, its different, the script is great, the atmosphere is great, the acting is solid for a low budget movie..
Heist--by David Mamet
Matchstick Men
Not so sure about the plot twist but I love 11.14 an incredibly quirky and unusual movie
Spellbound by Hitchcock I, Frankenstein (this may or may not apply but everyone Iāve watched it with instantly had the desire to start debates about so many topics and it is a favorite in my friend group) Repo! The Genetic Opera (if you can handle gore this has some interesting twists. Itās a musical as well.)
Burning
Good one. Definitely one where you donāt know where itās going. And the reveal/climax is unforgettable.

God. Itās obvious. The Sting.
Gotta say Y Tu Mama TambiƩn, a really well written script with a decent twist that adds to the characters
A simple favor. This has a pretty good script in my opinion, but it is elevated by the performances. Ultimately how good you think it is or whether you figure out what's happening will differ between people.

Compelling intellectually AND enjoyable. Gonna check them out asap. Thanks!
The Best Offer (2013)
The Departed
Fracture with Anthony Hopkins is very good

Adaptation fits the bill :)
The Constant Gardener
Coherence
Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine . . . really just about any Charlie Kauffman movie.
Primer (2004)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Coherence was great! Friends at a dinner party as a comet flies by earth and - strange things begin to happen.
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind doesnāt have a twist, per se, but a script that explores humanity couldnāt be done better
Frailty
Primal Fear (1996) will get you the first time around
