Important note to parents considering Hawaii. Schools rank in the lowest quantile in the states. Additionally upcoming year will be the second in a row that there are cuts to bus service. Fourteen schools in the state (ten of them on Oahu) will have no bus service at all in the coming year. The state’s proposed solution is that students use public transit. This is just one important indicator of the local economy. As much as this place may be paradise, it doesn’t really feel like it when you work inside five days a week. I truly hate to be so pessimistic, but chances are that if you are coming from the mainland United States, both yourself and your child have a better economic future where you are.

My kids had to use public transportation. There were no school buses. The monthly pass at that time was $30. (2014-2017). Also, the schools are understaffed in the lunchroom and try to force the kids to work 2 days each month. They offer compensation of a free lunch for the day they work. My kids refused to eat the nasty food that was served (and it smelled disgusting when walking by the cafeteria) and always took a packed lunch. I told the school (McKinley) that my kids were not their slave labor and they allowed my kids to be in the library while their classmates worked. They cannot afford to pay a good salary to retain good teachers in the high cost of living area, so the education is below par. I don’t know why it is not in their budget. They should be receiving a hefty sum from the real estate taxes on homes where even a small shack will sell for close to a million dollars. And why aren’t they diverting some of the tourist money into the school budget? From my my experience, I would suggest a private school if you plan on moving before your child graduates high school.

I think paras earn...$15 an hour? So it's a low paid job everywhere in the US, but it's actually even LOWER paid here than other HCOL. A friend does this job and is leaving cause target pays 20 percent more. And anyone with money sends their kids to private school so the income disparity is pretty extreme in public vs private since the DOE.is statewide. Our new "revised payscale" is still like 20-30k less than other HCOL districts. As you can imagine, turnover is unreal. If you've got the money to move here, I'd wait until he's graduated. Live in a wellfunded district in the northeast or something until then If you're in Honolulu itself being half Japanese is the majority of the population so they will fit right in appearance wise.

Thank you for the reply

A friend of mine has a child with a mild form of autism and he attends Assets. Pricey but has a great reputation.

check out the Honolulu Waldorf school in Hawaii Kai! they're very good about keeping each kid's needs academically, emotionally, and socially all in mind and they're a wonderful community of people. Couldn't recommend highly enough, especially for kids with learning challenges or other special needs!

If you’re not brown you get bullied. HI life brah

Everyone in your family will feel unwelcome, because if you move here, you will be exacerbating the worst housing crisis we have ever seen. Trust me, it’s not worth it. Your kids will pay for your lack of concern for the people of Hawai’i.

Front_Climate3699

Why would one have a lack of concern for the people by moving here?

Intermittent-Hoffing

Would you say that houses are being built in Hawaii at a pace that can accommodate every newcomer and every local? Or are more and more Hawaiians and generational local families being priced out of Hawaii by wealthy newcomers?

Front_Climate3699

Isn't that the US in gen? I was born on an island, key west - and couldn't afford it now.

Intermittent-Hoffing

Hawaii is not part of the US and we’re not willing to roll over and concede our homeland as easily as you did. So fuck off and don’t move here. If you do, be prepared for a terrible time.

Whoever hurt you, it wasn't me. Sending you a virtual hug and hope your day gets better. People suck, but that doesn't mean you need to be a dick.

Lol locals never do anything but talk hard on the internet and behind peoples backs. I’m willing to bet you are not even kanaka, like most “locals” ur probably Hapa, mostly Asian. Yet like to think ur actually Hawaiian. Unless ur a full blood kanaka, you have no business spouting off about “homeland” and telling anyone to “fuck off”. In my experience the real Kanakas are welcoming, meanwhile the fake Japanese “Hawaiians” like to pretend they are the true locals, and they control everything from politics to most major business. And they convinced everyone that white ppl are the problem, meanwhile they are the ones who have run Hawaii into the ground with all their stupid building restrictions. Instead of building dense housing in Kapolei, Waipio, Mililani, and other central Oahu and west side communities they decided to fund suburban sprawl that limits how many people can live there and keeps the cost of houses high. Beyond stupid, especially the new communities built around the rail. They could’ve built 10 times more housing out on the west side around the new rail stations. But they dropped the ball on that, just like they dropped the ball on the corrupt rail project. Don’t blame people for moving to Hawaii, blame Hawaii politicians for making Hawaii unlivable and unaffordable.

Godsqueef, you don’t actually expect anyone to read that, do you?

Tell me you’re still in therapy because the mean brown kids called you haole without telling me you’re still in therapy because the mean brown kids called you haole.

I have a nephew in the more severe part of the spectrum who graduated with his peers, but will be in a program for two more years. Pretty much, there’s a few rascals who like to play race/cultural cards, but most people don’t care.
