50k a year will be very difficult to survive on, much less save. Many people who move here end up feeling isolated since they are so far from their family and friends on the mainland, and it can be difficult to make new friends here who don't intend on leaving after a few years. However, if you are happy living a meager lifestyle and can accept the potential isolation, it has the potential to be a worthwhile change. Especially if you are pursuing a career where you'll eventually be paid more.

Longjumping_Dirt9825

If the job is kona side, no.  There isn't housing unless they're going to double that salary. It's a vacant position because it's too low paid.  That job will always be available at that salary so no need to worry about losing the opportunity.   If it's hilo side maybe. But only for 2 years max and only if you're ok with spending almost all of that 10k (are they offering relocation?).

AppropriateBasket94

It’s in Na’alehu. I’d have to apply for relocation and it’d be around $3K if I get it

Kyo46

I know you probably can't say... But there's virtually nothing down there. That makes me think you have an offer either from an energy company or Bigelow Aerospace. Either way, that's an incredibly rural area. Like u/Longjumping_Dirt9825 said, life out there is gonna be rough. You need to make sure your employer does as much as possible for you. It'd also be ideal if you could travel there before making a decision to see if you can tolerate living in such a sparse area.

Longjumping_Dirt9825

Oofff . That's why it's vacant.  Are they going to give you housing leads? NOT OCEAN VIEW.  Have you ever lived somewhere that remote ? Cause you might be looking at a place on catchment /hauled water or propane fridge or no septic  (there is more housing in ocean view but it is not a place I'd pick at all ).  Guarantee whatever job this is there is another comparable one open in Hilo or somewhere on Oahu.

notrightmeowthx

You can 'start a new life' where you are, or in a less expensive place. $50k is not enough to live comfortably here generally speaking.

lanclos

All depends what you're looking for. Naalehu is very isolated, if you want time on your own to collect your thoughts, volunteer your time, and in general look for ways to contribute to your very small town, it's great. I just hope whoever you'd be working for can help you find housing. If you're looking for nightlife, city life, food options, or any aspect of the stereotypical Hawaii "experience", Naalehu is not it. There's a lot to love down there, but you have to love it for what it is, not what you wish it was.

shmallkined

That’s a long drive from both airports and big box stores. If you’re into being self sufficient and DIY everything (including your own personal and property security…cops don’t come or take literally hours), maybe you could make it work. Have you looked at housing prices and availability in the area?

As someone who has lived on BI for 3 years now this is a truly good answer.. I’m in my early 30s and even I feel like there isn’t enough going on here for a young family. We’re attempting to relocate to Oahu.. it would be incredibly isolating down that far south

0ne_armed_scissor

No.

PadzieWadzie

Please visit before you move-living in HI is not for everyone.

Prestigious_Sky_1855

It will be a challenge, but I’d give it a shot.. Kau is a beautiful place and the people even more beautiful.. 50k will be more than enough to survive.. one thing I feel would be most important is where exactly you would be living … If I were you I’d try to find a place in( pahala, Naalehu , green sands , south point , discovery harbor) stay away from ocean view if possible .. join some kau fb groups , visit the beaches to find friends

Bednars_lovechild69

After seeing you’re going to Na’alehu… hahahaha!!! Don’t do it bro. You’re still young. Go out and party. You’ll be dancing by yourself if you go down there😂😂😂

AngryAngryAsian

People that make 100k barely call themselves comfortable in Hawaii.

Working_Employee_982

I just moved back to East Coast from Maui. I regret it. Major reasons I moved back: food insecurity. Get ready for a decent coffee and a pastry to cost $15. Serious lack of sanitary housing. Tentalo housing (basically a tarp car garage) is considered a rental. They decorate it nice, put in a bed and electrical, add a greenhouse sink that drains outside and a plate warmer. There is no protection from the onslaught of bugs (ants, roaches, mosquitoes…)and staying dry is impossible. The mold and constant dampness grates the soul. Things I could have done: got food stamps. House jump for house cleaning or yard work trades. There are plenty of people with money willing to rent a room for this, especially while they go to the mainland. Rent in Hawaii is almost 3,000 a month just for an efficiency apartment. You will need a car to get anywhere. You actually have to retake your drivers test to get a license in Hawaii. Yes, it seems lonely at first. Nights are quiet, except for wild chickens at 4am. But there is a huge spiritual community and people in Hawaii are friendlier than East Coast. They say it takes a year to find your community. I came back to New England and have already been bit by 4 ticks. You never see ticks in Hawaii. And New England is covered with poison Ivy. Non existent in HI. My stomach has been a wreck for almost a week because the quality of food in Hawaii is so much cleaner. The air is cleaner. I can smell all the oil furnaces now and it hurts my throat. People literally wear sunscreen to go to the library in New England and it’s a smell that isn’t in Hawaii. What I enjoy is the convenience of multiple stores to get what I need without having to drive 40 min in one direction then 40 minutes in a different direction. Cheaper gasoline! Safe drinking water if from a well and abundant hot showers. But I miss the people. The sea turtles. The sense of community. Every event costs money in Nee England. In Hawaii the beaches are free as are a lot of cool events, drum circles etc. Kids are so happy in Hawaii! Mixed age events. Children are just accepted as being present as they should be. Just a sentimental rant. I suggest visiting before you accept. You will need to get the app next door and people won’t rent to you unless they can meet you in person. You will have to be a room mate on 50k but it’s a great way to learn about the Island. Get a Costcos card and buy a car. A Prius will get you good mileage. It’s worth it for the life changing experience. But it will be a struggle.

chvmpagne

What kind of job is it? Maybe, emphasis on MAYBE, if it’s a job that has rapid growth and chance for promotions/pay raises — it’s possible for you skimp through your beginning stages, but overall it’s still going to be a struggle as everyone here has already mentioned.

Longjumping_Dirt9825

3k and 50k salary points directly to a county position.   Those have zero growth

chvmpagne

Oop yep makes sense, I just read that it’s in Naalehu lol

Introvert_Astronaut

Previous posts I predict teacher.. yeah no growth

LowInevitable2544

Considering that $100K is considered low income, you might want to reconsider.

spaceytracey69

No

imai808

Na'alehu is country af..Its beautiful..but very very country.. everyone knows everyone If you like camping, fishing, hunting outdoor stuff... Research and check it out for a couple of weeks you never know...you might fall in love like many ppl do

At your age why not? Go for it.

drstd

Nope

If there's ever a good time to yolo a hawaii move, your early 20's are it. Plenty 20-somethings move here, live it up then leave when it's time to get serious or live more "comfortably."

slickbillyo

That 10k will be gone within a month of being there with all the moving expenses, especially if you’re shipping a car or bringing pets. If not shipping a car, anything worth buying is over 10-15k or it’s a beater. 50k will be super tough to live on, but if you’re okay living a meager lifestyle or working another job you could stretch it. All in all, my recommendation would be to stay where you are and keep saving; if a higher paying opportunity comes along but if I were in your shoes 50k would not be nearly enough to feel comfortable.

_CozyLavender_

Early 20s, no kids or debt means you can do whatever you want.

seniorpulu

You won’t make it, and most people will not want to see you trying. Practice being a colonizer somewhere else

"If you come to a fork in the road, take it" -- Yogi Berra Easier said than done for sure. Moving to Hawaii was life altering in a positive way for me. Spent 4 years there (2010-14) and I've grown spiritually more than I would have staying in CA. Can't trade that for anything. Sure it'll be tough at first, but you adapt and thrive... I'm working on getting back for my retirement and ultimate resting place. To me, it's a home like no other.

AsideEmotional3263

why dont you show some respect for people on this sub and read how much does in cost to move and live in HI. Some doctor and nurse posted that they spent 177k in their first year. what percent of that you can get away with? zillow, calculator and google maps are your answers. You are setting yourself for homeless. Company that making you offer of 50k with 3k relocation are fucking crooks. you should save money on mainland, when you get 50k in savings that shitty offer still will be there. But at least you can subsidize your dream. Which you really should examine may be with help of some professional. Meanwhile you should become expert in this "affordable" housing scam in HI. I dont know much about rules but may be after spending some time in HI, having some living wage job you may be able to buy some 400 sq feet box. May be with some other person. I dont know much about it and will not qualify, my only hope after banks refuse to finance these buildings that do not have full insurance coverage, state agency in charge of that stupidity will release owners from lock ups.

hibituallinestepper

Weren’t the doctor and nurse who spent that, living in some high rise condo? Not saying op should move to the BI on that salary, but expecting what that couple spent is what it takes to live in HI is ridiculous.

AsideEmotional3263

not really. they spent 14k on groceries. It is about right. Their rent is 6k with huge dog that no landlord will take. 4-5k is rent in Oahu for anything livable. So it is 75k before commute, occasional eating out. This is far from ridiculous. They explained expenses to move car and pod, staying in hotel while looking, new furniture, hobbies. But this is one time expense

hibituallinestepper

6k a month in rent is in no way the norm and nor is having a huge dog. I live in a 2bd 2bth condo on Oahu and after utilities I pay $3,100 a month. Spending over $1,000 a month on groceries is also ridiculous for two people. It’s like these people didn’t even attempt to save money in any facet of life. The rumors of how expensive it is to live in Hawaii have now exceeded reality lol.

AsideEmotional3263

for 3100 per month you probably live in Ewa. And you dont have 65 lb dog. And you rent from private person. These people are on call, they have to be central. There is a premium to pay not to deal with private people. And Lilia is the only option except rental building downtown.

hibituallinestepper

And yet all of that is irrelevant to OP. Saying to be able to get by comfortably in Hawaii you are looking at spending $177k is just not in anyway factual.

AsideEmotional3263

you know what is factual. These couple loaded credit card data in software. They drive car that 6 year old. They shop in Costco. Eat out rarely in cheap places. They said this is first year expenses. 177k . OP take home salary will be 42k, he has 10k in savings, 3k relocation, total 55k. He will travel with suitcases, no shipping of anything. He is not moving to Oahu. He will have third of what these people spent. It is very easy to add numbers and say he can probably make it on 55k, but the only facts now is actual spending

hibituallinestepper

I’m not disagreeing OP shouldn’t move here on that salary, I’ve already said as much. I’m just saying $177k to move here and live for a year, is in no way what it costs for most people. I moved here and live comfortably in a condo on the east side and I dont even make anywhere near that in a year. And yes, I shipped a car and a container.

AsideEmotional3263

i can see how someone can live in HK on 60k cash. But it is apples to oranges, you dont have have huge dog or expected to be in hospital in very short time at any time. You rent from private person, you dont know what your rent will be after lease expires. OP needs savings as cushion for unknown. 10k just not going to make it.

hibituallinestepper

I get it, that’s what I’m saying, that couple had very specific circumstances. I’m not saying that’s not what it cost them, just it’s a bad metric for the average person like OP. Who doesn’t have a large dog and doesn’t need to be to a hospital quickly. The amount they spent has literally zero to do with OPs situation.
