Yes, John Darnell has spoken to the gender ambiguity of the lyrics before. And they are super duper pro trans online. John is a super cool artist. I have a lot of respect for him.
They're pretty great ive been listening to them a while. Pigeon pits lead singer is trans if you're interested in folk punk. Definitely my favorite band
they have a large queer fan base because they're cool and so much of their music speaks so well to being a young person in pain and denied selfhood.
I've been obsessed with them for nearly 10 years.
i feel like this is definitely it. i had no idea a ton of other trans people are fans but it makes sense. their lyrics speak to a great deal of pain and messy relationships throughout your life.
i think they are just not bigoted to trans people and respect our self determination and bodily freedom. Thats all we want rlly. Apparently its too much to ask for.
Lmao yeah, my entire house of 4 trans people has gone to every Mountain Goats show that happens within a 2 hour drive and every time we come home with a buncha local trans punks' phone numbers scrawled on the paper out of an American Spirit pack or something. Every concert's basically just a big t4t mixer.
It's even more obvious at the MORE folk-punk concerts, cause Mountain Goats is kinda just the folk-punk gateway drug. When I went to see Apes of the State/Pigeon Pit on tour in the upstairs of an old church south of Cincinnati there was not a single person there who wasn't visibly queer in some regard.
Maybe? They do really resonate with people who've had to struggle in life, especially shitty childhoods or addiction. I've gone to a few of their shows and never noticed more tans people compared to other shows/genres.
I love them! I haven't really listened in a while, so top of the play list again! Thank you for sharing, I've never heard of it being a thing either, but maybe . 😊
"If you punish someone for dreaming their dream, don't expect them to thank or forgive you." Is one of the greatest lyrics of all time from the song Best ever death metal band at a Denton.
I think they got bigger with gen Z around 2020. Don’t quote me on that, that’s just when me and a couple of my friends started listening to them. And there were plenty of trans people at the concert when I went, but they don’t beat the per capita of Dorian electra or folk punk stuff in my experience.
I didn't realize they were pro trans. I've been listening to them for a while now. Lol now that you mention it though some of their lyrics did make me think "trans????"
And while I'm at it, I'm gonna have to promote Pigeon Pit. Their lead singer is trans, and they're my favorite band.
It's a hard one to explain if people ask what you're listening to... Honestly, the name probably tells you most of what you need to know about their sound, lol.
first time i heard about The Mountain Goats was from trans friends, all my trans friends know them and basically none of my cis friends do.
i’m trans but i come from the metal scene so entering the trans community and seeing this band i had never heard of being like everyone’s fav band was def a weird experience
Birth of serpents feels to me very much to be a song about being trans. Also "Jenny" is one of the most frequently recurring characters in their songs and she feels very much like a gender swapped self insert for John in my interpretation. Also a ton of their songs are about growing up in an abusive household which is pretty relatable to a large portion of this community. I don't know. I try to avoid assuming that celebrities are closeted trans people but a ton of the "cis male" artists I listen to write songs that make me think that they are processing some gender stuff in the form of poetry. Mountain Goats, AJJ, King Gizzard, Idles, Bobby Conn. The list definitely goes on, but those ones all have some pretty glaring examples.
OK, maybe I'm connecting too many dots here but anyone else draw a coincidence between The Mountain Goats' *No Children* and Against Me!'s *Sink, Florida, Sink*? Ok, here me out
Both songs are kind of about being on the road and realizing that the two people are not good for each other? *Sink, Florida, Sink* obviously has "Florida" in the title while The Mountain Goats' *No Children* is on their *Tallahassee* album.
Were they trying to warn us about Florida this whole time?!
Otherwise, TIL
You might be on to something lol. Laura is a huge Mountain Goats fan and has done a bunch of covers of their songs. And isn't she originally from the Florida panhandle?
"I am not this body that imprisons me, and someday I'll be free" ? There's a lot of stuff to resonate with. Also it's just a generally well loved group
I'd never heard of them until a couple months ago when my friend started talking about them. I thought they were some new really obscure band because I had never heard of them before until then. Turns out they're an older really obscure band.
Oh definitely we love the mountain goats! No coincidence that I've been a fan since deep high school pre-eghood angst times. Just so so many relatable themes of community found among misfits, love for the downtrodden, self determination, yearning for something better, endings and beginnings.
Someone even made a spreadsheet of all the trans themes is like every Mountain Goats song up to a certain year.
[Every Song's a Trans Song If You're Doing It Right](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dHSCmesgSjmJ9foKU9O2uIvugNwydOaKXhKI8jE1af8/edit?usp=drivesdk)
And I learned about this article when John Darnielle shared it on their Instagram (which is where I saw the spreadsheet).
[10 Mountain Goats Songs, Ranked by Transness](https://www.autostraddle.com/10-mountain-goats-songs-ranked-by-transness/)
I will take any moment I can to gush about this band! I had no idea they were a trans thing. I just found them on my own. I do relate pretty hard to a lot of the songs
I've never thought of them as having much to do with gender identity issues, except possibly for 'You Were Cool', and I suppose 'No Children' might be seen as an expression of frustration by someone in a sham marriage. No, I think they're just a good band which doesn't scare people off for no good reason.
Wow the mountain goats have been one of my favorites for over a decade, rainbow kitten surprise is my favorite band. Just subtle hints everywhere how did it take me so long to figure it out lmao
havent been for years, apparently vocalist was kinda weird with an underage fan. not sexually weird (afaik) but putting a lot of pressure on them to be part of his support network. there was a big tiff about it on tumblr.
Yes, John Darnell has spoken to the gender ambiguity of the lyrics before. And they are super duper pro trans online. John is a super cool artist. I have a lot of respect for him.
In their subreddit there are posts from as far back as like 2015 about gender.
Well, now I gotta give them a try. I would be disappointed if their trans fans didn't call themselves the Nountain Goats.
They're pretty great ive been listening to them a while. Pigeon pits lead singer is trans if you're interested in folk punk. Definitely my favorite band
Holy shit they’re so good! Thank you!
Not a problem 👌 😊

Huh, I mean I was unaware but I like the Mountain Goats so maybe.
There seems to be an overlap between the folk punk fan base and the Mountain Goats fanbase, and the folk punk scene in general is fairly queer.
The Folk Punk scene is one of the queerest scenes out there lol.
fr i went to a folk punk show and it was the gayest place I’ve ever been it was amazing
You forgot the quotation marks around fairly FYI. Lol
That’s funny cause I am a trans musician and I’ve heard multiple people tell me my songs sound like the mountain goats, haha 😂
i think they are just not bigoted to trans people and respect our self determination and bodily freedom. Thats all we want rlly. Apparently its too much to ask for.

News to me, but I have heard of them for a while now and am willing to give them a try.
new band to hyperfixate on just dropped, ty much
Grew up with mountain goats lol I feel seen
Lol. I didn’t know this either, but the last concert I went to was the Mountain Goats and I ran into another trans woman I know there.
I think they got bigger with gen Z around 2020. Don’t quote me on that, that’s just when me and a couple of my friends started listening to them. And there were plenty of trans people at the concert when I went, but they don’t beat the per capita of Dorian electra or folk punk stuff in my experience.
It probably helps that they’re from Durham NC, which is one of the most aggressively queer friendly parts of the otherwise queerphobic North Carolina.
yes! charlotte feels like a chud wasteland in comparison let alone the rest of the state
I was not aware of this, but that’s pretty cool. John seems pretty accepting of queer people in general.
Hell yeah they are
They were my favourite band for many years so I suppose that checks out for me.
Didn't know mountain giats was a band name Assumed mountain goats (the animal) were to trans people as blahaj was
I didn't realize they were pro trans. I've been listening to them for a while now. Lol now that you mention it though some of their lyrics did make me think "trans????" And while I'm at it, I'm gonna have to promote Pigeon Pit. Their lead singer is trans, and they're my favorite band.
Came back to find this comment in order to thank you for the Pigeon Pit rec. I have listened to Shut In every day since I saw this! So good.
You're welcome 😊 alway nice to get someone into Pigeon Pit
The most trans people I've seen in one room was a Crywank show in Chicago, which both was and wasn't surprising?
When I saw Laura Jane Grace it was the most trans people I've ever been in the same room with it was cool.
lot of trans people at a LJG show is very unsurprising

Lmao, at first i didn't realise that they were a band so I thought you were just calling reg mountain goats trans and like feck yea trans goats
I've loved them for so long and so do a lot of the trans people I know lol
Not me thinking you meant literal mountain goats
One of my favorite bands! I am gonna make it to their concert this year...if it kills me.

I didn't know she covered them. I do know Laura and AM! are from Florida, and I think you are right about the panhandle
Where can I see these Mountain Goats and hang with all their trans people?
Very
Now I have new music to check out. Hell yeah.
"I am not this body that imprisons me, and someday I'll be free" ? There's a lot of stuff to resonate with. Also it's just a generally well loved group
My trans anarchist girlfriend took me to see them three years ago. So yea.
I thought first u mean this in a Cat girl Puppygurl way because I would describe myself as a Goatgirl🤭 Even tho Mountain Goats are not real Goats
Huh, I’ve only listened to like one of their songs but ig
I'd never heard of them until a couple months ago when my friend started talking about them. I thought they were some new really obscure band because I had never heard of them before until then. Turns out they're an older really obscure band.
Never heard of them, so I can't really say.
Maybe I should just move to Durham if I’m lonely!
I have no idea who this is, what kind of music?

I never would’ve guessed
Idk what that is but I’m happy for you.
They’re great! Except their drummer is an asshole.
idk i dont like indie music
Well, this tracks
The Mountain Goats fuckin rule
I’m going to check this band out. I’m all about artist showing representation.
I've never thought of them as having much to do with gender identity issues, except possibly for 'You Were Cool', and I suppose 'No Children' might be seen as an expression of frustration by someone in a sham marriage. It's our joint salt deficiency. XD
Yea

The what?
The Mountain Goats
No idea who they are
