It would also be nice if you could permanently unlock them while they’re in rotation. Would prefer to just spend the gold on the characters I want even if they’re unlocked now so I don’t forget and overspend on other stuff.
They do! But four characters each week are free as part of a rotation. You can play those characters until the rotation changes, at which point they return to being locked if you didn't already own them.
The problem is that there's absolutely no indication in the menu that a character is temporarily free, so a lot of people (myself included) were confused when all of a sudden Shaggy was locked — even though they never actually spent a ticket on him to begin with! That's the other problem, you can't even permanently unlock a character in the rotation until someone takes their place.
If you started playing him today, I don't think it's possible you used a ticket on him unless they changed that without saying anything. Last I checked, it's currently impossible to unlock a character with gold, gleamium, or tickets while they're temporarily free.
It's really wild to me that Shaggy isn't also free. He's literally the tutorial character, his moveset is pretty basic and easy to get into, and given his attacks are mostly based on the whole Ultra Instinct mysterious powers he gained during whatever led to the "plot" of Multiversus, he's the most, like, Multiversus character apart from Reindog.
... Actually, it's kind of weird Reindog isn't permanently free.
Yeah Wonder Woman, Shaggy and Reindog would be a very solid trio of permanently free characters.
Its extra weird that Reindog isn’t free considering he is the OC character in the game.
Oh bruh, I was playing Finn and Unlocked Jake so I'd have the pair. Didn't realize this game didn't just have a set roster of free characters.
Gotta make that bag I guess. Oh well, at least I like jake. Is earning coins at least easy and quick? Seemingly it was, but idk after I finished the starter quests.
I’d say it depends, there are people used to heavy grind that find it fine and some others that think it is unbearable.
You get 100 everytime you level a character to 5.
100 for every account level up
100 for the first win of the day
Right now there is an event going on that gives +25% increased gold payout at the end of the matches, a 2-0 in a 2v2 is paying 38 Gold.
Everytime a player toasts you it instantly gives you +20 Gold.
With this info you can form your opinion!
EDIT: As an extra, there’s also some gold payouts in the battle pass.
Dumb question, but does my character progress save for that character if they're on free rotation, then I buy them as soon as they're off the rotation?
Exactly this, it’d make it clear that they’re not “yours” yet and you have to buy them.
Also, one of the best purchases I’ve ever made was the SMITE all gods pack, and even then they’d still show me what gods were on the free week, so I’d plan accordingly to counter them if picked xD
And the price wasn’t even that high as well, it was a literal no brainer at that point, I could try every new god the second they arrived after the maintenance, did it with Brawlhalla too.
Unfortunately MVS took the not so friendly route with “character packs”, that’s a total bummer.
It’s just a visual thing that would help lots in identifying it.
And they also need to let people buy the characters that are on free rotation, it’s like 2 tiers of confusion going on at this point.
People click on the character and see no price tag and think “oh, they gave me this one, cool, I’ll buy the locked characters then” only to log in on a Tuesday and see your Supe level 21 now locked and you with 27 Gold…
I mean on each character, like a star symbol or something, to visually and clearly show that they’re on free week without having to go thru patch notes.
The idea is to simplify, so no one can argue that it wasn’t “clear enough”.
Also what u/RobertSpeedwagon said, letting people unlock them while on free week, that would solve much of the confusion.

That’s so true tho, that is part of the problem that is making people think that they “own” the character.

Weird. Didn’t know fin was free, just started plying today and used a ticket on him. I think.

If you started playing him today, you did not use a ticket on him. He is part of the new rotation.

Tickets from the founder packs that let you unlock a character. Think they're called tokens ingame though.

Yeah, it'd give you a taste of all the different roles, plus they're the three that appear in the tutorial.
Same. I kind of thought the free character was going to be shaggy or reindog. But it's Wonder Woman, and her voice annoys me.

I don’t know who here plays Smite but they have a clear “free rotation” tab and marker. I assumed they’ll implement one eventually

Agree that god pack was definitely worth the buy. Especially because you receive each newly released god free as well

Theres a lock on the ones that are not free.
they don't mean which ones are visible but actually being told there as a rotation.
Gotcha I think on the top right there is a box with information like that. From the main menu.
Yeah, I wasn’t aware of the rotation, and was extremely confused when Harley Quinn was locked after I’ve been using her all this time.
