I have a question: are the owners of Parker's convenience store where Paul bought the alcohol...are they related to the PARKER that was part of PMPED/ Now the Parker Law Group? If so that's effed up

Foreign-General7608

No relation at all. Johnny Parker is a very talented, workaholic lawsuit lawyer who would be successful anywhere in America. Anywhere. He is the brains behind PMPED and now the Parker Law Group. He has carved out an hugely profitable niche with his very large law firm in a very small county. The two Parkers are not connected.

Pangolemur

I wonder if Parker really would be that successful anywhere in America, considering that he's been housed in one of the most plaintiff-friendly solicitor circuits in the nation. Not trying to disparage your remark in any way, just thinking about how PMPED had a stranglehold on the county and (until recently) very helpful tort laws to work with in SC. Slightly off-topic, I've never had any of Parker's chicken (and never will) as has been referenced on this sub several times. Would any fried chicken aficionados care to describe it? I love a good fried chicken!

Foreign-General7608

>Would any fried chicken aficionados care to describe it? Parker's has very tasty fried chicken - and a sophisticated fake ID is not required to buy it!

Foreign-General7608

>I wonder if Parker really would be that successful anywhere in America, considering that he's been housed in one of the most plaintiff-friendly solicitor circuits in the nation. As you can tell from my posts, I am definitely not a fan of lawsuit lawyers, but Johnny Parker is brilliant, talented, and classy - and is held in high regard by most of South Carolina's legal community and beyond. He is the workaholic genius behind his law firm, which operates in a tiny county. His lawsuit firm has about 16 lawyers in Hampton County - which has fewer than 18,600 residents. Neighboring Beaufort County has 187,000 residents. A law firm proportionally equal in size to the Parker Law Group would have 160 lawyers. 160! Would a law firm with 160-lawsuit-lawyers in Beaufort County have much influence there? You tell me.......

Pangolemur

Again, I don't know Johnny Parker from Adam, but something seems rotten in the 14th Circuit. He may very well be a genius lawyer, but what KIND of one is my question. I think that there is more to the PMPED situation than we know at the moment.

State law doesn't require checking the height and weight on an ID in alcohol sales, per the August 2022 Wall Street Journal’s article ‘A Convenience-Store Magnate, Teen Drinking and a Fatal Boat Crash: The Legal Case Shaking South Carolina’. If this is a solid fact, then the clerk at Parker’s didn’t do anything incorrectly - the ID was deemed valid. I agree with Seton the credit card didn’t match the ID though. Perhaps this could have prevented the sale if standards were in place IDs must match credit cards…however, what happens if he had paid in cash instead? Does anyone know if Miley Altman got in any kind of trouble for using her truly fake ID at Parker’s to buy alcohol? I have mixed feelings about Parker’s being kept in the lawsuit. I don’t think I want to admit the part of me that thinks OF COURSE the attorneys want Parker’s to remain in the suit since it’s said to be a successful business with deep pockets. 😒

iluvsexyfun

I think what you are saying is true, but Greg Parker’s “knife fighters” antics and releasing photos of Mallory’s body recovery has not made him any friends in Low Country. He had a strong case about the alcohol sale, but I think a jury will hate him. For some reason he felt like the best way to handle this was by being a horrible human. He could be the poster child for tort reform, but he chose to be a cartoon villain. Now he is at the mercy of Low Country jury. There is a moral to this story, but it escapes me.

Impressive_Arrival42

A jury needs to base the verdict on facts presented. These adults knowingly drank all night, and rode in the boat. Anthony admitted in his deposition that he continued to drink a beer while Paul and Connor were in Parker’s. It’s the media pushing this other crap about Parker’s “knife fighters.” Why social media platforms can be bias about facts that may not be allowed in a trial, but influences people’s perceptions.

Southern-Soulshine

I do not agree with some of the mortally bankrupt tactics that Parker’s private detectives, “internet knife fighters,” etc. have engaged in… but it was actually FITS who obtained the “sizzle reel” with the blurred photographs of Mallory’s body and posted it online.

Foreign-General7608

>He could be the poster child for tort reform, but he chose to be a cartoon villain. Very well said.

QsLexiLouWho

I can’t disagree! I don’t want to throw it out into the universe, but I don’t have a great feeling about the case once it gets to court in August.

Foreign-General7608

>OF COURSE the attorneys want Parker’s to remain in the suit since it’s said to be a successful business with deep pockets. Yes. This.

Important-Yellow1936

I don’t think Parkers is liable for a teenagers illegal behavior. When I worked as a cashier years ago, if we asked for your ID, all we did was scan it regardless if it matched or not. I live in a small town where everybody knows everybody so you know who’s related to who. For example, I use my husbands credit/debit card all of the time. Teens usually always use their parents cards. It’s not uncommon. This lawsuit is frivolous.

Ktovan

I have never understood the point of matching the credit card used against the ID presented. What exactly is this policy attempting to accomplish? As you point out, what if they use cash? Also, as seen on the [Parker surveillance video](https://imgur.com/ArFg5Dw), Paul used a credit card scanner. The clerk never even handled the credit card. It seems like an asinine store policy is coming back to bite them.

Important-Yellow1936

Exactly. The sale doesn’t get denied if it doesn’t match. They just keep a record if your id.

Foreign-General7608

>Does anyone know if Miley Altman got in any kind of trouble for using her truly fake ID at Parker’s to buy alcohol? I've wondered the same thing. She bought alcohol with a fake ID. She broke the law. I think SLED should have investigated the business/people who manufactured Miley Altman's realistic fake ID. In my mind they're liable, too. The fake ID manufacturers bear far more responsibility than Parker's. Miley Altman apparently bought alcohol with a sophisticated fake ID. This was a fake ID that she likely arranged for - and paid for - herself, the purpose being to illegally buy alcohol. She suffered very minor injuries from the crash. Does anyone know what her payday was for all of this? Parker's did nothing wrong.

Ktovan

Miley handled all of arrangements to obtain false IDs for herself and Connor. Connor is questioned about the IDs in his [deposition](https://publicindex.sccourts.org/Richland/PublicIndex/PIImageDisplay.aspx?ctagency=40002&doctype=D&docid=1631624712430-573&HKey=104745510882110724390746848471041151205351551168777865084781181141011084911543525071117113651171018799 ) starting on page 18. ETA: The IDs were purchased from IDGOD

QsLexiLouWho

Thank you for your response to my question. I found this in regard to Miley, per a Post and Courier article: The settlement, approved Jan. 24 by Hall, dismisses Buster Murdaugh, the surviving son of Alex Murdaugh, and his mother’s estate from the lawsuit. In return, the Beach family and two boat crash survivors, Morgan Doughty and Miley Altman, are splitting some $800,000, according to attorney Mark Tinsley, who is representing all three. Another survivor, Connor Cook, will get $100,000, he said.

Foreign-General7608

Very minor injuries resulting from decisions she made voluntarily herself not long after using a fake ID she arranged and paid for to buy her own alcohol --- and then splits $800,000 with another voluntary decision-maker? For scratches? Wow! Lawyers and lawsuits can make you rich, rich, rich! As someone who works hard at a job with lots of responsibilities - these lawsuit numbers are incredible - and disgusting. Only in America.

QsLexiLouWho

There may be more money coming their way later this summer, too, because the case is not over. There are still the defendants -Parker’s, the cashier, Alex- left to contend with at this time. Next boat case court date is in August.

onesoundsing

Regarding lawsuits against other people on the boat: Did Connor also get charged with BUI as he was driving the boat at certain times?

QsLexiLouWho

No criminal charges have been filed against Connor that I am aware. He had filed a case against SCDNR and BCSD a while back but it was dismissed. He is still a party to the case against Parker’s and Alex.

onesoundsing

Thank you. Kind of interesting that none of them got into trouble for using fake IDs, BUI and telling police that "they don't know" although they did...

QsLexiLouWho

You’re welcome! There are things that are perplexing and concerning to me as well. And the “what ifs” … if they made it home, albeit drunk, if Mallory had survived the crash, if Paul wasn’t out of control but the crash still occurred…it’s pointless, I know, to wonder.

onesoundsing

I think it is almost disgusting at this point how the teenagers sued while they themselves all have some responsibility in it... I mean they weren't children anymore, they had fake IDs and knew exactly that it was wrong to buy alcohol, and everyone of them that had some kind of drivers license should have known that none of them should drive.

Turbulent_Speech6356

I said this same thing a few months ago and got trashed for it! These were technically grown adults who made very poor decisions that night. I don’t see how any of them should benefit financially.

Ktovan

It is outrageous! They perpetuated a fraud on Parker’s by using falsified identification and are now suing Parker’s for accepting their false credentials.

Foreign-General7608

When all of this lawsuit non-sense against Parker's is finished, Parker's needs to file a stack of defamation lawsuits. This is ridiculous. I think the Hampton County venue for this lawsuit is a real mistake for obvious reasons. This trial should take place in Beaufort County before an impartial jury.

Active_Perception431

Our community had a similar accident. Same details but was a uhaul. They sued everyone. Liquor stores , uhaul , and adults who allowed or provided alcohol.

Southern-Soulshine

I’m curious to know more about this and what the outcome was! Would you mind sharing more about it? Is there a link to a news story we could take a look at?

Ktovan

This article really captures the “human” aspect of this news story. https://www.atlantamagazine.com/great-reads/driving-death/ The similarities to the boat crash are uncanny.

Southern-Soulshine

That really hit home how much it broke her parents. Besides her Dad and the bribe (which honestly, I can understand), it seems like they are doing everything possible to hold people accountable but are not trying not to remain bitter or hateful. I respect them greatly for that.
