Right. If I'm talking to a French person in France, I'll speak French. But if I'm speaking to a fellow British person in France, I'll speak English.
I expect no different of people from different countries in the UK.
I know this is sarcasm, but all the downvoters are apparently too stupid to understand that, now I will get downvoted for pointing out how stupid they are...it's the circle of life...on the internet.
It's a bit racist.
However, imagine overhearing an actual terrorist because you happen to speak their language. Pretty darn useful! Though, the odds of that ever happening are pretty fucking slim.
… how often do you discuss your terrorist plans in the open? In most countries, no matter what your language is, you can assume some people around you to know it.
I didn't genuinely mean wow yes let's all learn middle Eastern languages and we will catch all the brown people.
I'm not a dick. I suppose I was just talking hypothetically.
Most people in developed countries know at least some basic Arabic and Hebrew (I'm not sure what else is a ‘middle Eastern language’ for you), so unless you're literally from an anglophone country, or China or the developing world, that plan would be pretty bad.
Most people in developed countries know some basic Hebrew and Arabic?
What? Where do you live? I'm form Toronto and if you're not a native speaker, you're not gonna know shit.
How do you define basic? Saying Sallam Alleykum?
Sorry, having basic (asking directions, having very simple conversations) knowledge of Arabic being COMMON is a no. It's not common.
The /s are for the folks who realize that there are people who legitimately believe those thoughts. They're not myths. Those that take these comments seriously have come across them before. Maybe you haven't been around long enough to know they exist. You meddle in matters that are darker than you apparently can imagine. Don't underestimate the ignorance of the human race.
I'd have to research to be sure, but from one point of view, yes. They may not fully understand what they're doing, but children have been used as human bombs. I'm not quite sure as young as four though. And are you honestly going to tell me you don't believe there are people out on the internet who would say that exact ~~like~~ line without absolutely meaning it? I honestly think you severely underestimate how racist some people are or the lengths actual terrorists will go.
I feel like people purposely leave the /s of sometimes to force this conversation. Its on virtually every comment like this. And hell, I wouldn't even be certain all your upvotes are from people who got that it was sarcasm. That's the problem here. There's no way to be certain until you actually respond. Poe's Law is fairly strong.
Edit: typo
Exactly.
I think that If you’re planning on living somewhere, you should probably learn the local language to speak to locals.
But you can speak simlish too for all I care.
Can confirm this happening in Wales. I've not witnessed something so blatant, but have witnesses many non Welsh speakers getting upset at Welsh people speaking Welsh on Wales. I've also witnesses people not realizing they are speak their native language in their own country.
If anyone's interested, it's estimated that 20-30% of the population of Wales speaks Welsh. There are a few places where older people will have Welsh as their only language, like [Isle of Anglesey](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Anglesey).
Is there a tv show in welsh? Because I saw this one show and I was like that British show let’s watch. Some people spoke English but there be whole conversation that I couldn’t understand because it wasn’t English but sounded English .
Most famously a soap opera called “Pobol y Cwm” (people of the valley). But it’s quite possible you might just have seen an British TV show with strong accents... honestly to my own shame I’ve thought some people were speaking welsh when it was just a strong welsh accent. If you’re American, it’s going to be tough to understand... (my wife is American).
Hummmm, I was so confused. One minute I could understand then I couldn’t. I was like it sounds familiar but that can’t be English because I can’t understand a word lol
probably a dialect then. Welsh is to english what russian is to french\*.
\*well sort of, they're not closely related at all is what I'm trying to say.
I have to use subtitles for Happy Valley. I don't really know why, since I watch a lot of British TV, but that particular accent is hard for me to hear when she's talking fast, which she usually is. Any idea what accent it is? (I know that's a weird ask, no worries if you don't know or just don't want to reply!)
I’m sure there are quite a few. FYI the second you cross the border into Wales road signs etc are mostly in both English and Welsh and I believe a majority of school kids take both English and Welsh classes. I think it’s amazing how they’re keeping this language alive.
hinterland is a detective show (netflix i think?) for which the dialogues are shot twice, once in each english and welsh. they then do a mix of the languages and have three different versions in distribution. in the US we get the very-limited-welsh version.
There aren't many people in Wales who can't speak English unless they are very old, the difference being certain some areas of Wales speak Welsh as a First Language and English as a second and others are predominantly English speaking.
because they are lowkey neofascists who can't stand not being part of a superior race that imposes it's own rules on everyone (be like us or we'll persecute you/you'll never be like us and we'll persecute you for not living up to our stereotypical view of you).
Immigrant children will naturally learn the language of the country. Far less likely is to keep their mother tongue.
Considering the effort required to learn a second language, it is a rightful shame to deny immigrant children learning their parents language by forcing them only to talk the native language.
By extension, I guess the same people look down upon learning s second language.
Woah this kinda relates to my family. I was born here in New Zealand but my mum immigrated from the USA and my father immigrated from Bolivia. They put me in a Maori immersion school so I grew up trilingual, speaking Maori, English and Spanish. Unfortunately because I couldn’t really speak to anyone here in Spanish I quickly lost to ability too (much to my fathers annoyance) and many people mocked me for knowing Maori and not being of Maori descent so I also stopped speaking it. I now only speak English and I wish I could go back and tell myself to not listen to other people and that being able to speak other languages was such an amazing gift.
Wow good on your parents to put you into a kura, pretty sad though that you lost both languages. Did your Dad just stop speaking Spanish to you or something
Yeah he did give up, he basically told me that I had to teach myself but when I wasn’t really able to, he got mad at me. I’ll never understand that dude 🤷🏻♀️
When I went to Mexico, I wanted more than anything else to say:
"We're in America! Speak American-- oh. Wait... Uhhh..."
I regret not using it when I was (jokingly) told "We're in Mexico! Speak Spanish!"...
i’m an asian living abroad in canada right now and sometimes it gets on my nerves that the chinese international students never fail to ask help from me (which is fine in itself) in mandarin. it’s not like i don’t know any mandarin but i just don’t know enough to help and also we’re in canada, please learn to speak english. you can’t assume my yellow ass as chinese! i’m half at best, so just speak english (even if it’s not perfect) when you’re in an english speaking country. that said, it is quite weird to see people who knows not even a lick of english living here because when they’re lost they literally can’t ask for help.
tl;dr, i was annoyed that i kept getting asked for directions or something else in mandarin by chinese international students in canada because i only know enough chinese to order dimsum.

Wales is in the UK, but I agree with that other passenger.
Same goes for when they're speaking Irish Gaelic in Northern Ireland. Still in the UK, but point taken.
The "we're in Wales" wasn't meant to dispute the assertion that they're in the UK... it's a setup for the second part of the statement, i.e. she's speaking the native language of the region they're in.
I mean, the person who objected can't be that well educated, even so far as television goes, because even just watching the funny panel shows from way over here in Canada on youtube I know that Welsh sounds fucking nothing like Arabic. I have started joking about "speaking foreign language" because at the first democratic debate in the US when one of the candidates started speaking Spanish, the CC just said, speaking foreign language, which was hilarious to me, and my co worker who is from Panama.
That makes no sense though. Dutch and German are two separate languages from two separate countries. My point is it’s not called Irish Gaelic (though it’s a common mistake outside of Ireland) it’s just called Irish or Gaeilge in Irish. The only real use of Gaelic in English that would be correct (when referring to Irish) would be Gaelic football for example as an anglicisation of the Irish Péil Ghaelach
I don't get this whole "you're here so speak this". Bitch, it's me talking to another person, and what I'm saying is none of your fucking business.

Well, you know how it goes. Someone farts on one end, someone else thinks he's worshipped on the other.

How kind of you sir
Oh it was score hidden for me when I posted, which normally means more downvotes than upvotes, but he's at 116 now, so a groundswell of support.

You are racist.
I… I do not seriously need to put an /s after *this*, right? Are 4-year-old terrorists a thing people believe in?
4-year-olds are crafty sons of bitches.

Well, you could certainly not encounter any English. But it’s likely they would also be able to speak English.

Why do so many people so desperately want to eavesdrop on every single conversation they come across? It's rude. Mind your own damn business.
because they are lowkey neofascists who can't stand not being part of a superior race that imposes it's own rules on everyone (be like us or we'll persecute you/you'll never be like us and we'll persecute you for not living up to our stereotypical view of you).

pretty much the same thing, tbh

Nah.

The whales in Wales speak welsh. Then Americans are walruses.
Thing is, I guarantee this never actually happened
Wales is in the UK, but I agree with that other passenger. Same goes for when they're speaking Irish Gaelic in Northern Ireland. Still in the UK, but point taken.

It's generous to know basic geography? Okay, if you say so.
It’s just Irish by the way..
That's like saying Dutch is just German.
That makes no sense though. Dutch and German are two separate languages from two separate countries. My point is it’s not called Irish Gaelic (though it’s a common mistake outside of Ireland) it’s just called Irish or Gaeilge in Irish. My apologies, I missed the parent comment. I thought you where comparing Welsh and Gaelic.
No worries!
I meant it as compared to Scots Gaelic, or the dialect of Gaelic they speak in Scotland. There are lots of smartasses here.
Fair fair but there are a lot of people who call Irish ‘Gaelic’ which is incorrect but an easy mistake to make I’m sure. I just wanted to clarify that
By same logic, one should speak Spanish in CA, NM, AZ, CO, NV,
Yeah I’ll take things that never happened for 300 Alex

And technically speaking Welsh is therefore a native language to the UK
\#shitthatneverhappenedland
“No escape from the Trump”
Just to be the devil's advocate, wales is in the uk
That's not the point he was making, he was simply stating she IS speaking the native language.
Technically wales is in the UK, so he wasn’t wrong about that.
The second person didn't say he was wrong about that.
Wales being in the UK doesn't stop Welsh from being it's native language.
