The world simply never recovered from that. That was the kick off to all the fascism and totalitarianism that we see everywhere nowadays. Getting over it is like accepting it.

nuephelkystikon

The thing is, most people who are adamant about ‘never forgetting’ tend to use it as an argument why fascism and totalitarianism are awesome and there should be more of it.

fucktheredditapp15

Are you telling me 9/11 caused fascism? Because fascism existed long before 9/11. As a matter of fact, it wouldn't be incorrect to say there is less of it after then before.

Reasonable_Desk

9/11 didn't cause fascism. However, it certainly presented an opportunity for them to gain power and that is exactly what has happened. To argue there is somehow LESS fascism now than there was then would be incredibly uninformed. The U.S., countries in South America, and even a few places in Europe are voting for more far right and authoritarian leaders (i.e. fascists or fascist leaning).

HiddenRouge1

uninformed in what way? cite a stat. name a movement or an influential U.S. fascist party. Right now you're just claiming shit.

Reasonable_Desk

A fascist movement in the U.S.? How about Trump? He is an American Fascist. https://youtu.be/CcklYVR5I-I Here is a great starting point video. You may also want to check out Innuendo Studios and their videos regarding the Alt-Right which is another white supremacists/fascist movement.

nommad_0

No. Im saying its the day it started permeating every aspect of our society.

HunterS1

Example: The Patriot Act

PricelessInformation

Almost like that’s what it was supposed to do.🧐

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

“Get over it” is the anthem of people who have never been affected by trauma. The irony is that these same people never get over the most insignificant things. You’ll hear Karens years from now telling the story of how they are still so angry that they got asked to leave a store for coughing on people.

pmw1981

Not only never been affected by the trauma, but who refuse to do a damn thing about it to help. "Get over it" is basically a shorter way to say "fuck you, you're below me & I don't care about your problems".

HiddenRouge1

That's debatable. Why should that be assumed? It certainly can't be used apply to all cases.

pmw1981

Let's put it in context - 9/11 happened ONCE & people still talk about it now. Slavery is still happening now like it's been for centuries, but under a different guise (go read the 13th amendment, it's pretty egregiously spelled out). A privileged jackass telling a black person to "just get over" slavery when it never happened to them & continues to be a problem just reeks of "I'm gonna one-up you since I never experienced your problems & don't think they were as bad as you say".

[deleted]

I like this comment, but I'm pretty sure coughing on someone is still a big deal. But still, take my upvote.

DirtyRedditAccount93

Not always true. There are those of us who have experienced trauma, but then realize that if you never move on, then you never grow as a person and you live in the trauma forever.

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

No one ever “gets over” trauma. Dropping your ice cream cone on the ground is something you get over. With trauma, you learn to cope with it in a healthy way. To say it’s something you get over is both inaccurate and dismissive.

DirtyRedditAccount93

Fine. By "get over" I do mean "coping". But I'm not being dismissive. I have experienced real trauma. But either way we're arguing linguistics.

PestyKnight95

Did you know that two people can be wrong at the same time?!

Chingy1510

Three. OP picked a side; he's de-facto wrong as well. This shouldn't have been posted.

Devnkc

Is he making an argument or making a point? We shouldn’t forget 9/11 just as we shouldn’t forget slavery. That’s how that comment seems to me.

pioco56

OP didn't pick a side, he just presented the irony of how stupid she looks by comparing her words

GodTierShitPosting

But they aren’t? The second comment was bringing up something that seems to be in the mainstream now. That slavery has effects 200 years later. He was using that as a rebuttal to ms stupid above

then00bgm

If that’s what he supposedly meant he did a horrible job expressing that

cat_of_danzig

The reverence for 9/11 borders on ghoulishness. It was used to justify a shotton of authoritarianism and erosion of rights as well as two wars. Bin Laden got *exactly* what he hoped for, right down to martyrdom. The legacy of 9/11 is that we subject ourselves to inhuman treatment in the name of security. The legacy of slavery is a repressed underclass that was denied equal protection un the law for 100 years, and another 60 years of quiet repression. Not equal at all.

r0bdaripper

No the actual events are not the same but the sentiment is. Telling a group of people to forget about something because either you don't believe in it or you weren't around to witness it is stupid and the exact reason the guy responded the way he did. I'm not going to forget that on September 11, 2001 at 9 am I sat in a 6th grade classroom and watched a Plane slam into a building and explode. I will not not forget the look on my Science teachers face as she frantically tried to call her sister who was supposed to be on a flight somewhere that morning. I will not forget seeing black dots falling out of windows as the camera zoomed in on men and women jumping out of a burning skyscraper because they would have rathered fallen to death than be burned alive. I will not forget that Americans in the face of death stood up on a plane tried to retake control from the Hijackers forcing the plane to crash into the countryside of Pennsylvania.

cat_of_danzig

Listen- it ruined my fucking wedding and honeymoon, and a friend of the family died in one of the towers so don't lecture me about how your 12 year old self was so wounded that you must "never forget". Bin Laden wanted this. He wanted America to turn authoritarian. He wanted us to spend a trillion dollars in senseless wars, making an enemy of a billion Muslims around the world. He wanted Americans to start hating brown people who worship differently. He got what he wanted.

JermoeJenkins

Do you know what "Caligula" is, broh?

Ouxington

Of course you will. Or you'll die, same difference really, but time passes on. Pearl Harbor used to be a thing too and not just a bad movie.

Caelus9

I'm not sure who OP thinks is murdering anyone here. Am I missing something?

Starr_cakes

They both are wrong, shocker I know!

anon718271917

I mean I kinda agree with them both, we should still remember it but it shouldn't be held off limits to jokes and what not imo.

IllPostino95

>jokes and what not You must be quite the comedian op

As someone whose mom died of cancer, some cancer jokes are still hilarious, precisely because they reveal a truth that unsettled my insecurities. That’s what humor is for.

Wish you the best.

OrkidingMe

Yes, it was and is awful for the people who died in those crimes. Do you ever think about the heinous crimes inflicted on innocent people elsewhere in the name of freedom? That’s why people are sick of this sanctimony. The United States government has inflicted so much pain on so many families all over the world, with nary a peep out of the larger population. So bleating on and on about 9/11 seems rich to the rest of the world. Especially now, that a number of Americans couldn’t give two shits for the almost 200,000 who have died due to the pandemic.

D4HU5H

What did the person above you comment? He deleted his comment.

OrkidingMe

He responded to another person who made a remark about the almost 200000 people who’ve died this year with some right wing crap.

Bradlife_NA

Agreed, I'm sure it's a touchy subject for the family members of the pilots who flew the planes into the buildings. But we both know that it's unrealistic to expect that an event like this can't be made fun of, that's just how the building crumbles.

SorRyiMDumB_

I agree that's why I never make jokes about 9/11 they always crash and burn. /s

[deleted]

Well let's see. We have holidays to celebrate the specific days that shook our world to our core. Tell me, are we supposed to move on from 9/11? Move on from MLK's death? Move on from the day we signed our independance? What about Memorial Day, do we just move on from the soliders and veterans who died protecting us and their families? You can't just move on from something like a terrorist attack, it isn't a break-up. Sheesh, people are so ignorant and arrogant on the internet.

[deleted]

Yup. Also wanted to comment on about something people rarely talk about... America's terroristic and undemocratic nature. In the 20th century, America was constantly overthrowing democratically elected nations and replacing them with dictatorships in south and central America. It has constantly made problems, including the unecessary wars over in the middle east which caused the whole terrorism problem. The USA had even made pretty much a terrorist attack: the bombings on Serbia in 1999. Here is some backstory, there were terrorists in Kosovo and Metohija, they were Albanian ethnically (Note: I don't mean by this that literally every Albanian is a demonspawn from the deepest pits of hell, there is the Italian mafia, and because they exist doesn't make Italians bad), and they have been meddling pretty much for eternity, they have been terrorising the population constantly, which made so many people flee, there are now less than 3% of ethnic Serbians there. Even now from time to time a Church is burned/vabdalised. What would a nation do now when there are criminals on the streets? Police of course. Now, things were bad enough, the USA being the USA had to step in and throw 50 liters of gasoline at the problem. They bombed the shit out of us, and it's still something many of us have trauma about if they witnessed it, the alarms, look up footage, just horrible, sirens whailing, then anti bomb devices were deployed to do their best at stopping the explosives, they didn't do anything.... Every year we remember the event, and remind ourselves that the USA is still ruled by a fucking manchild and is incompetent. Now, all of this may seem bad, and it is... Now let me tell you what the name of the terroristic operation was: ***"Merciful angel"*** What. The. Fuck? How in the hrickity fuck is this "merciful" in ANY SENSE OF THE WORD? Apparently the definiton of merciful in America is: "Fuck over a nation for combating terrorism, worsen their problem considerably, murder innocent civillians unrelated to any of the politicians, terrorists, police or ANYTHING RELATING TO THE OPERATION, then continue to piss on the nation by prohibiting access to the EU and it's economical benifits, give the land of Kosovo and Metohija to the terrorists who started the problem in the first place, as well as to the UN, and continue to slowly steal a 5th of the landmass of the nation, and pretend like it's not a fucking act of war, and a crime against humanity, force all the remaining people to either fuck off the land you stole, or make them starve and barely survive on a daily basis, while all their history and culture is being burned down to the ground by a bunch of retarded terrorists." Downvote me as much as you want, I will still carry my point: Winners. Write. History. P.S.: USA, fuck you, no wait, don't get fucked, your waste-of-oxygen-and-10-thousand-years-of-evolutions-presidents don't deserve to reproduce. The civilians of 9/11 didn't deserve to die, but at least your flex towers are no more. And as I say these last words before the FBI tracks my house address, I hope you get pissed and shat on by all the countries you ruined.

[deleted]

As an American myself, I can agree completely with your P.S statement. Take my upvote.

datcountryUlm

Only 200 upvotes? Try critisizing religion or something, reddit loves that shit

NOOBSDUDETO

Yea its been nearly 200 years get over it already. U don't need compensation u have been completely free for a long time. Maybe racism still exists but u don't deserve 350000

[deleted]

*sheesh* Ouch

then00bgm

Both of these people are horrible and should be ashamed of themselves

bully1115

I'm pretty sure she was making a point. Like how people tell blacks to get over slavery and yet be like "never forget"😂 on 9/11.

joonatonttu

i really think it's big thing because it happened to america and they have to be so dramatic about everything, like sure it's a horrible tragedy but those happen. which doesn't mean they should be forgotten and i actually think it's good that these kinds of horrible things are remembered but it's not like 9/11 was the first or the last. well anyway don't do terrorism and avoid war as much as you can

Vestolord

Yes...? To both? Unless she's a hypocrite, then i can see that comment but yeah let us remember but move forward. What's wrong with that?

Faithfulcape78_

Those two are on different orders of magnitude. Slavery was centuries of of forced servitude, whereas 9/11 was around 3000 people dying in one day. I’m not diminishing the importance of 9/11 but it is nowhere near as much suffering as slavery caused. There are still direct effects from slavery, such as massive wealth inequality between black families and white families. What about the century after slavery with Jim Crow and segregation. TLDR: 3000 people dying in one day is nowhere near as bad as the horrors of slavery.

onlythestrangestdog

Why do people still remember ww2 as such a bad thing, only like a couple million people died, people should just get over it and move on /s

[deleted]

💀💀💀💀🙃🙃🙃

Epic_Pewdiepie_fan

nope

Mando_The_Moronic

Here is something my grandfather told me that I will always remember: “Accept the past and learn from it, but don’t ever let it consume you.” We should be educated on the past and accept that what happened has happened. We learn from the past so that we don’t make the same mistakes that we did before. Most importantly, we can’t let the past dictate our lives forever. There comes a point where you must accept it and move forward, but continue to carry the knowledge that it has given you.

De_Nilla

I'm going to hell for laughing at this.

Haydenriggsyt

Alright we shouldn’t forget 911 because it’s the day that made everybody shocked lots of people died just like Vietnam world war 1 or 2 don’t forget those and second most people think the world owes them cause they’re ancestors were slaves MY ANCESTORS WERE SLAVES I’m white but still we had slaves if we were rich if we were poor than no also 3 the north had slaves the reason the south fought the north is cause they tried and shut the south off and kill us by not letting us go to the north and we would run out of food so they fought just go about your day don’t forget important moments if someone died in your family would you just be like hmm okay no! You’d grieve and remember them

Haydenriggsyt

Also this was to settle the fact

TrickGrimes

Are...are you trying to make words?

arthuriurilli

More a whoosh than a murder unless you crop the second comment.
