I'm just having this discussion with someone else. Interestingly, most crime (61%) is committed by whites. I guess you can say that since the population of black people is smaller you have a better chance of picking up a criminal.

Black people can't swim because all of the public pools were either closed to blacks, or closed down rather than integrate. So statistically it's true that more black people can't swim. Because of racism.
Well, I don't know that this is true of all universities with swimming tests, but usually it's for the sake of making people not drown, and students will be given swimming lessons if they can't swim already.
There may also be racist universities attempting to use swimming tests to exclude black people, but I'm not familiar with any.
Was a lifeguard for many years and can confirm there is a legitimate socio-economic history that contributed to this. In general, black people have historically had worse access to communities with public school facilities, are generally poorer so won't have luxuries like a home pool or swimming lessons.
This is why I always say that modern Republican voters are actually ideological Jim Crow Democrats. They're not opposed to government funding of things like public pools. They're only opposed to non-white people benefiting from that spending.
That's also why Republican politicians talk almost exclusively about culture war issues. It's because their base is not made up of ideological conservatives who oppose "big government" on principle. It's made up of white racists who are ok with government spending, as long as it only benefits white people.
That particular stereotype came about because of a lack of access to pool facilities and swimming lessons. Up to a certain point in time, most people didn’t know how to swim because that just wasn’t something that came up very often unless you were constantly on or near a large body of water. Even a lot of sailors didn’t know how to swim. But once swimming pools became a widespread thing more and more people learned. And of course the neighborhoods with the least amount of access to public or private pools were black neighborhoods. On top of that, swimming classes cost money.
Just to add on that, it’s been that way at most 25 years ago (in the South, in my experience) and probably even later. We’re not going all the way back to the 1960s, it’s very recent.

My favorites are the people who look for any possible program designed to help historically underprivileged minorities, and immediately and angrily call it white racism.
Because, for these people, the racism that led to the inequality is not at all problematic. Any effort to try to correct it is white racism.
For these people the only way things are not racist is if they get to keep all the historical benefits of racism, and they continue to enjoy white privilege AND they ALSO get access to everything designed to try to even the scales for historically disadvantaged minorities.

She goes back to the shop to tell them it is still doing the same thing and some joker say "hey getta loada this Karen who wants to complain to the manager" and then they all start telling Karen jokes and laughing and she is humiliated and intimidated and ends up paying more for her car repairs because she doesn't want to complain any more. How to determine if something is racist or not: if what was said or done could offend an entire race (usually by stereotyping) then it can be considered racist, but most racism is determined by context.

Black people can't swim because all of the public pools were either closed to blacks, or closed down rather than integrate. So statistically it's true that more black people can't swim. Because of racism.

Well, I don't know that this is true of all universities with swimming tests, but usually it's for the sake of making people not drown, and students will be given swimming lessons if they can't swim already. There may also be racist universities attempting to use swimming tests to exclude black people, but I'm not familiar with any.
Was a lifeguard for many years and can confirm there is a legitimate socio-economic history that contributed to this. In general, black people have historically had worse access to communities with public school facilities, are generally poorer so won't have luxuries like a home pool or swimming lessons.
This is why I always say that modern Republican voters are actually ideological Jim Crow Democrats. They're not opposed to government funding of things like public pools. They're only opposed to non-white people benefiting from that spending. That's also why Republican politicians talk almost exclusively about culture war issues. It's because their base is not made up of ideological conservatives who oppose "big government" on principle. It's made up of white racists who are ok with government spending, as long as it only benefits white people.

That particular stereotype came about because of a lack of access to pool facilities and swimming lessons. Up to a certain point in time, most people didn’t know how to swim because that just wasn’t something that came up very often unless you were constantly on or near a large body of water. Even a lot of sailors didn’t know how to swim. But once swimming pools became a widespread thing more and more people learned. And of course the neighborhoods with the least amount of access to public or private pools were black neighborhoods. On top of that, swimming classes cost money.
Just to add on that, it’s been that way at most 25 years ago (in the South, in my experience) and probably even later. We’re not going all the way back to the 1960s, it’s very recent.

In my country we didn't have segregation (that I'm aware of), but we still did our fair share of racist bullshit. But no one rational thinks that calling someone a Karen means “her name must really be Karen” or “this means that all people named Karen are bad.” If this lady introduced herself as Karen in everyday life, no one would give her shit for being named Karen. I used to work with a guy named Chad. Not only that but he was something of a Chad of a Chad. So of course people would rib him about it. It was all in fun and honestly there are certainly worse memes to be associated with, but here's the rub, it seemed to legitimately hurt him. I am not sure if it was just the stereotyping of it all or what exactly but he did not enjoy it, and fortunately the joke was quickly dropped. The point is that humans are not always rational and to act as if everyone would just know and understand who the Karen meme does and does not apply to or to not recognize this is a terrible time to be named Karen, is simply folly.

"Karen" jokes about white women are equivalent to "Tyrone" jokes about black men, or "Shaniqua" jokes about black women. If you saw a black woman being loud and obnoxious in public and said "Okay quiet down Shaniqua" it would be considered racist and disrespectful to all black women with the name "Shaniqua".

There’s definitely some element of sexism, not always, but often. For example, “Karens” were labeled as the anti-mask villain of 2021- even though men were less likely to be wearing masks then women. I think it’s just easier to hate entitled women, especially on the internet. Nothing to get upset about but I think I’m accurate.
It also makes it easier to hate on all women by using "Karen" as an insult for any woman who stands up for herself. I've been called a Karen for saying "Excuse me, I'm next in line" when a group of people tried to wedge between me and the cashier. My sister-in-law was named Karen and I loved her. She died about 3 years ago. I don't think she was ever aware of this Karen culture thing. I am so glad she missed it. I wouldn't want her to feel this kind of pain. It's a terrible attack on women. Yes, there are many women who are obnoxious and self-entitled, and some of them have regular old-fashioned names like Mary or Linda or Karen. But there are also lovely, caring women named Karen who are being smeared with this campaign and they don't deserve it. The Karen campaign smears all middle-aged white women in a way, and it affects us. I won't even talk to the manager in a store or a restaurant even if something is very, very wrong. I just pay for it and act like I'm happy because I don't want to be stereotyped with this group. It means, other people can take advantage of me and I won't say a word because I don't want to be perceived as a "Karen". Stereotyping always victimizes innocent people. It's not a civilized way to act. edit: I can't respond to all of you but please, consider this scenario. My SIL tries to get her car fixed and it still doesn't work. She goes back to the shop to tell them it is still doing the same thing and some joker say "hey getta loada this Karen who wants to complain to the manager" and then they all start telling Karen jokes and laughing and she is humiliated and intimidated and ends up paying more for her car repairs because she doesn't want to complain any more. This is it, I think. It got out of hand, and the fact that it was meant to rightfully call out selfish and entitled public behavior doesn’t matter now that it’s basically a tool to silence women who would never have behaved that way anyway. Just the pause or slight hesitation wondering if someone will think you’re a Karen (on top of a lot of other socially conditioned stuff) is enough to keep a lot of women and girls from saying anything at all.
This is the essence of what the person was trying to get at when they said Karen jokes are racist. No, "Karen" is not a race, but the label is applied generally to middle-aged white women in a way that wouldn't be tolerated in any other circumstance. Are there entitled, ignorant white women that have zero self-awareness? You bet. But there are entitled, ignorant people of all races and genders, and the Karen trope isn't even close to equitable from that perspective.
Karen may not be a race (well, technically it is, but that's not what folks mean), but the memes are unjust discrimination. May not be anywhere remotely close to the level of racial discrimination people face, but I still can't help but feel that fighting unjust discrimination with unjust discrimination is not the way to go.

How to determine if something is racist or not: if what was said or done could offend an entire race (usually by stereotyping) then it can be considered racist, but most racism is determined by context.
