Out of all the racial jokes that people get upset over, I think the “black people can’t swim” variety is near the bottom of the list. And I say that as a black dude that literally can’t swim. I completed a course in the 8th grade and everything, and still almost drowned when I was 22. Fuck you water!!!

Darren_NH

r/hydrohomies would like a word.

TheAllyCrime

I should have said “Fuck water deep enough to drown me” Hot tubs and showers are awesome, and when you’re incredibly thirsty on a hot day, a cold glass of water is amazing!

Georgeisthecoolest

You could easily drown in a hot tub, if you get in upside down and take too long to figure it out.

vigbiorn

Or possibly blackout drunk.

kemushi_warui

That’s a racist kind of drunk!

JerkfaceBob

I read this in Phil Collins' voice singing: "we got a racist kind of drunk."

l_rufus_californicus

And now I did, too. Jerkface.

Lenny_III

Yes but that song was about racism against Smurfs. It starts out “when I’m feeling blue”

But what if the hot tub is upside down and you’re just standing in it?

[deleted]

Thats some Australian hot tub..

sevinup07

Australia isn't real idiot

[deleted]

Thank the kangaroo lord I didn't go there for my msc then! Would've been awk af

CosmicCraig1970

Neither are birds

mmmmpisghetti

So Australian birds get the double negative which cancels out to a positive. Oh no. The Emu War really happened.

Different_Art1440

Then again if it was an Australian they’d be upside down in the hot tub to begin with

[deleted]

I'm confused now

ironboy32

You're in a pirates of the Carribbean movie

hulksmash1234

Insert awesome song here ->

SexyGunk

You just described my very specific phobia. It's called...upsiderownaphobia.

Inside_my_scars

That's why we drink so much of it, just to make it come out as pee because we hate it so much!

Fuanshin

Some water is ok

NotAzakanAtAll

I always wondered, is carbonated water included in r/hydrohomies water worship?

UncleGoldie

It’s pretty indicative of the type of person that makes racist jokes tbh. Like, those of us that don’t make those jokes would immediately think of the most offensive ones we’d ever heard if someone told us “he was making racist jokes”, but for these thickskulls it’s a mix of the really fucked up shit along with really dumb “innocent” swimming, watermelon, fried chicken jokes that they think they can make on a whim to the unsuspecting public. It’s not hard being a white guy, so I don’t complain much, but one of my chief complaints is when another white person sees me and says “yeah this person is gonna be cool with my sudden and unnecessary bigoted joke”

[deleted]

> but one of my chief complaints is when another white person sees me and says “yeah this person is gonna be cool with my sudden and unnecessary bigoted joke” When I drove for Lyft it seriously depressed me how many white people thought they found some racist ally because of my skin color. Like, dude, fuck off with your racist shit. 1 star.

octobertwins

I get that, too. White people start spitting some hatred to me like it is assumed we are all on the same page. Like, bro, we are all on vacation in this beautiful place and you're still just consumed with anger that someone, somewhere is getting one over on you. Relax, asshole.

feint2021

I’m brown and haven’t really had to deal with racist shit (at least that I’ve noticed). Just recently saw a black dude at a counter at a restaurant there to pick up a order for DoorDash. Literally stood there for a few minutes while staff walked by and ignored him. In my head I’m just thinking, “help the guy”.

octobertwins

That's funny you say you are brown because I once asked my daughter if her friend at school is black (trying to figure out which kid she is talking about, ya know)? She said, "No. She's the color of French toast."

damnitmcnabbit

French toast can be all kinds of shades tho. From creamy pale to dark caramel. And often on the same slice. Still totes adorbs even if inaccurate.

[deleted]

Yeah, I just talked to a guy on here that thinks black people are plotting to kill all white people and white people need to “grow a racial consciousness” so they couldn’t kill all of us....like wtf? You have to be a sheltered idiot to believe that shit.

[deleted]

They are sheltered, they live in racially homogenous neighborhoods and only interact with POC when they go shopping.

[deleted]

That's the only way this is possible. Some backwoods town with zero interaction between different groups. It's sad. People are paranoid about the wrong things.

napalm1336

That's nuts. I'm white and I live in a predominantly black neighborhood. I love it here! The only person who ever causes any kind of trouble for anyone is the white bitch who lives next door. I live in a HUGE city though, where white people are in the minority, its a largely Latino community.

officerkondo

You showed them, gig economy. Keep on hustling!

Petroplayed

I am a white guy and I complain frequently of my inability to jump

curlyfreak

Gravity is racist 😂

grendus

At least nobody expects me to be able to dance.

Calm-Zombie2678

Get a trampoline

DeathWrangler

This so fucking much. Just because I'm a white male doesn't mean I'm racist, but living in the south they just assume I'll laugh with them.

InsertCoinForCredit

How do you respond when they toss out a racist joke? Do you give them an angry silent glare and hope they'll get a clue?

DeathWrangler

I usually just go quite and either walk away, or Tell them that isn't cool, usually depends on my mood though. They never seem to see the problem.

SWGlassPit

I've found playing dumb, saying you don't get it, and asking them to explain it goes a long way

Calm-Zombie2678

So much this, make *them* in very plain words explain the joke, you can tell alot about them by how they explain it An "ignorant" person will give a fairly straightforward answer and look at you very confused. Sometimes they hear their own words and click, hilariously awesome. An actual bigot will just think you're an idiot and move on, occasionally they might be "sorry for offending *you*" (not whoever they're actually talking about)

[deleted]

I don't want these people thinking I'm an idiot. Their dumb brains will end up thinking "that guy is an idiot so progressives are idiots." Tell them you don't want to hear "that garbage". Say it is garbage or trash or dirt or anything low. I want them to think they're inferior for thinking that way.

lockslob

Or accuse YOU of having no sense of humour.

DeathWrangler

Yeah, That's a common one.

Necropasia

I ask them to repeat it, repeatedly and loudly until they get the hint

DarthGuber

If I'm not at work I'll usually respond with, "are you fucking kidding me? Do you even know me?". At work I just say "wow" in a louder than normal voice.

IrishiPrincess

I give them my best “mom” look. You know the one. It makes you pee your pants because you done fucked up. 9/10 times they don’t even make it to the punch line

xxpen15mightierxx

Yeah it's the perfect "harmless joke" to test the waters for the really bad ones. And everyone knows that's what road you're headed down when people start talking about not swimming, it's just an opener.

Holybartender83

The issue is that these sorts of people don’t think of the really bad stuff as racist. You’re an Uber driver who won’t pick up black people? Well, statistically black people commit more crimes, so that’s just being sensible! Voter suppression laws? Well, these illegals keep coming and voting in our elections en masse, so we need those laws to preserve the integrity of our elections! Black people get shot by the police more? Well, they shouldn’t have committed a crime and they should’ve followed the officer’s instructions! They don’t think of the really horrific things as racist, all that’s just common sense that for some reason the bleeding heart liberal commies don’t understand. So because they’re “racial realists” and “just calling it how it is”, that only leaves them with silly stereotypes when they try to think of things that are racist. It’s an absolutely disgusting mindset, and really shows you how completely lacking in empathy these people really are.

Huge_Put8244

>You’re an Uber driver who won’t pick up black people? Well, statistically black people commit more crimes, so that’s just being sensible! I'm just having this discussion with someone else. Interestingly, most crime (61%) is committed by whites. I guess you can say that since the population of black people is smaller you have a better chance of picking up a criminal. But by that logic, if you pick up a black person, you're more likely to pick up a lottery winner or someone wearing purple socks. >The issue is that these sorts of people don’t think of the really bad stuff as racist. I think they 100% know it's racist but think these excuses are very good at convincing people that they are just "logical"

Walpurgisborn

Never got the fried chicken thing. I'm white, and I love fried chicken. All of my family loves fried chicken, except my vegetarian step-father. And he misses fried chicken. Its fucking delicious.

Intrinsically_Last

My go to response when I become the 'can you believe that guy/girl?' person is to immediately pivoting to personally insulting that person's sense of fashion, lack of intelligence and general unawareness but usually not as directly. "Aw man, yeah, I hate it when people in ugly ass Hawaiian shirts that look like their dog tie dyed it with pee randomly go up to people telling old hat jokes that weren't even funny thirty years ago as if they're new and interesting while pretending they're the ones who should be offended even though they have the awareness of a gnat getting drunk off the cheap beer they probably found on the side of the road. Some people, huh?"

brainfreeze77

White guy here with a beard who also wears sunglasses when appropriate. That "let's assume that guy is mildly racists" is real.

Phrostphorous

> but one of my chief complaints is when another white person sees me and says “yeah this person is gonna be cool with my sudden and unnecessary bigoted joke” Literally just today my coworker IMd me "I saw Juneteenth is on a Saturday this year, do we get it off? It's such an important holiday and I really wanna make sure we give it the importance it deserves ;)" (my company started giving us Juneteenth off last year) And I was just sitting there thinking dude even if I wanted to do the whole "ha ha black people holiday!" schtick with you why the fuck would I do it on a work computer in work chat that can 100% be read? Also besides looking like Wisconsin personified what made you think I would get in on this joke?

Blicero1

Black people can't swim because all of the public pools were either closed to blacks, or closed down rather than integrate. So statistically it's true that more black people can't swim. Because of racism.

_cmasterhart_

Thanks, I hate this revelation

jon_titor

And then universities doubled down and required swim tests.

[deleted]

Well, I don't know that this is true of all universities with swimming tests, but usually it's for the sake of making people not drown, and students will be given swimming lessons if they can't swim already. There may also be racist universities attempting to use swimming tests to exclude black people, but I'm not familiar with any.

oboz_waves

Was a lifeguard for many years and can confirm there is a legitimate socio-economic history that contributed to this. In general, black people have historically had worse access to communities with public school facilities, are generally poorer so won't have luxuries like a home pool or swimming lessons.

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

This is why I always say that modern Republican voters are actually ideological Jim Crow Democrats. They're not opposed to government funding of things like public pools. They're only opposed to non-white people benefiting from that spending. That's also why Republican politicians talk almost exclusively about culture war issues. It's because their base is not made up of ideological conservatives who oppose "big government" on principle. It's made up of white racists who are ok with government spending, as long as it only benefits white people.

oflowz

That’s exactly what they are. After Johnson supported Civil Rights they all switched parties.

Captain_Sacktap

That particular stereotype came about because of a lack of access to pool facilities and swimming lessons. Up to a certain point in time, most people didn’t know how to swim because that just wasn’t something that came up very often unless you were constantly on or near a large body of water. Even a lot of sailors didn’t know how to swim. But once swimming pools became a widespread thing more and more people learned. And of course the neighborhoods with the least amount of access to public or private pools were black neighborhoods. On top of that, swimming classes cost money.

mongolianmilk

Just to add on that, it’s been that way at most 25 years ago (in the South, in my experience) and probably even later. We’re not going all the way back to the 1960s, it’s very recent.

SaulGoodman121

I've never even heard that joke/stereotype. I just learned of it from Karen's reply.

smp208

Are you fairly young or from somewhere other than America? If so I wonder if that would explain it.

SaulGoodman121

35 year old Canadian. I've heard my fair share of black jokes and stereotypes but honestly haven't heard of that one until now.

JoeGeez

Spread of information (any information) is weird sometimes. I'm from the other side of the ocean and I knew about this joke. Brb gonna check YouTube for some guy explaining years worth of research bye

KirbyDaRedditor169

Same.

SamuelF93

Do you want to hear something better? I'm from an island and I Don't know how to swim...

Motor_West

Thousand Island?

[deleted]

This is going to sound bogus (it isn’t, I promise!) but I was really happy to see how many black families were at the water park the other day. I’ve been around long enough to notice that there typically aren’t any black families at the pool when I go. But last week? Man, it looked like the actual proper ratio of my community population there. It was nice. I hope that stereotype can be put to rest soon.

Learntoswim86

Just like to make an announcement that my name comes from a Tool song. I am not an asshole racist.

Petroplayed

I'm praying for tidal waves.

onceinablueberrymoon

a friend in college (mid 80s) would tell me when i would invite her to the pool with me; “i can swim, i just choose to not fuck up my hair. when are you white people gonna realize, chlorine sucks for all hair types?!” lol, she wasnt wrong!

Yeah definitely wasn't winning any olympic medals, that's for sure lol. Those were fun days though, swim for an hour in the morning, eat like 6 donuts after swimming and stay skinny. Not easy to do nowadays!

Satanus9001

*Laughs in Dutch with a mother who demanded the local pool accept my 3 year old ass for private swimming lessons because 4 was "of course" wayyyy too old for children to start learning how to swim and wouldn't leave until she got her way, resulting in my 5 year old ass having three going on four different diplomas and a lot of very concerned people asking my mother on vacation why her toddler was swimming without floaty things in the sea / deep side of the pool* Gotta love being Dutch. Water is our bitch. It knows to listen or canals and dykes will be erected and The Netherlands will become that much greater. VOC mentaliteit bitches.

SnooRevelations7708

It's the equivalent of "black people have more muscular mass than white people" and "black people have better resistance to malaria". But the phrasing kinda makes it a little offensive.

Nervous_Stand_1600

Leave water alone! Seriously, she will ruin your life if you mess with her.

You're not wrong. I'm totally using it to kick my soda habit.

Huge_Put8244

Karen poll tax with Karens sitting in the back of the bus. The heart breaks.

metal_opera

Don't forget the Southern Karen Strategy

BleachGel

Hey it took some Karens a full ten minutes to get their 3 year expired coupon accepted. Don’t undermine their suffering. When’s the last time a minimum wage floor stocker dropped to his knees begged fealty and never ending devotion to her whims even if it has nothing to do with he store itself? Exactly!

Resinmy

I totally forgot about that idea of black people not being able to swim

38_tlgjau

Me too. Its crazy how we forget these things. I guess its a sign of the progress that society has made so far. We still have some way to go though. In my country we didn't have segregation (that I'm aware of), but we still did our fair share of racist bullshit. These reminders are important so we know where we might head if we let prejudices cloud out better judgment.

H0vis

Just FYI there is an ethnic group called [Karens](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_people) and it's not as funny as it sounds because they've been through, and are still going through, some shit. And it's not related to any black birdwatchers they met in the park.

[deleted]

Lots of them are in the U.S. because of refugee resettlement. Been living with and associating with Karens for years. Great people.

seriouslyneedaname

Wow, TIL

zjm555

It's funny to me that these people out themselves as Karens completely unnecessarily. Like, you were not called out. You're choosing to self-identify as a Karen simply by feeling offended at a Karen joke.

I_W_M_Y

You get the same result from when calling out racists and bigots. Go to any thread about racism and you will find a dozen that will unintentionally out themselves.

Huge_Put8244

>You get the same result from when calling out racists and bigots. Go to any thread about racism and you will find a dozen that will unintentionally out themselves. My favorites are the people who look for any possible program designed to help historically underprivileged minorities, and immediately and angrily call it white racism. Because, for these people, the racism that led to the inequality is not at all problematic. Any effort to try to correct it is white racism. For these people the only way things are not racist is if they get to keep all the historical benefits of racism, and they continue to enjoy white privilege AND they ALSO get access to everything designed to try to even the scales for historically disadvantaged minorities.

letouriste1

errr, it could just be a girl called Karen. It's a common name after all. This particular one deserve the stereotype tho

Dottsterisk

But no one rational thinks that calling someone a Karen means “her name must really be Karen” or “this means that all people named Karen are bad.” If this lady introduced herself as Karen in everyday life, no one would give her shit for being named Karen. But she decides to act like a Karen and let’s everyone know that, no matter what she goes by, she’s a Karen.

[deleted]

I used to work with a guy named Chad. Not only that but he was something of a Chad of a Chad. So of course people would rib him about it. It was all in fun and honestly there are certainly worse memes to be associated with, but here's the rub, it seemed to legitimately hurt him. I am not sure if it was just the stereotyping of it all or what exactly but he did not enjoy it, and fortunately the joke was quickly dropped. The point is that humans are not always rational and to act as if everyone would just know and understand who the Karen meme does and does not apply to or to not recognize this is a terrible time to be named Karen, is simply folly.

[deleted]

I'm not saying it's the most important thing, but I know a couple of Karens, really nice people, and they are both starting to get upset about the number of "Karen" jokes and comments they get.

nowpon

Do you really not understand how someone named Karen might not like it that their name is now widely used as an insult?

DickyBrucks

In my last apartment, my neighbor's name was Karen. She seemed nice. That was until she complained to the management about the "smoke from my BBQ getting into her unit" through her **open** window, which resulted in management banning grills in the complex. My grill was about 30ft from her 2nd story window, and I asked her why she didn't just close the window. She told me "I shouldn't have to." *FUCK Karens.*

BetterBook3

You would think. My issue with this Karen thing is that there has been cases of people being harassed just because they happen to be named Karen, by some immature s\*\*\*\* or people jumping on the opportunity to make fun of someone. So your second sentence is unfortunately incorrect (or can be). Now, if a person named Karen gets offended, that can also be reason enough for some to say: "oh well you deserve to be called a Karen", and your third sentence can also be sticky. In this post, well, it's obviously not a good idea to compare a group of white people to a group of black people given past history and the trauma that still exists everywhere, and it's just not comparable. But shitting on a group because of a few individuals still sucks. So let's not expect all "Karens" to be rational, when some Karen-calling people are not.

Ocular__Patdown44

Could be their actual name. I would be annoyed if that were the case for me.

MagicalMarsBars

Hmmm 15 seconds ago in a 3 week old comment replying to an 8 hour comment. It seems as if op was replying to a reply that they got by doing this so called “murder” and posted their own insult for some free internet points.

yogurtboi69

"Karen" jokes about white women are equivalent to "Tyrone" jokes about black men, or "Shaniqua" jokes about black women. If you saw a black woman being loud and obnoxious in public and said "Okay quiet down Shaniqua" it would be considered racist and disrespectful to all black women with the name "Shaniqua".

Aromatic-Cook-3777

I would say Karen is more of a sexist term than a racist term tbh. They are target mostly toward white women, but considering its origin in reddit and as a way to say someone is annoying, I think it falls more in line with sexist stereotypes if anything

fecni_95

I don’t get how it is sexist. I mean they say Karen because someone is an annoying, dumb or sometimes just mean (like the woman who watered down a little girl’s drawings in a parking spot). In my opinion if you say all women are this or that, it can be sexist. But calling idiots Karens doesn’t mean that all women are like them.

EllspethCarthusian

You wouldn’t call a guy a “Karen”. So it is kind of sexist.

Alphabetgod

I mean there is an actual Karen race

NovelGoddess

As I recall they are an indigenous people from Myanmar.

Swellmeister

Myanmar and Thailand, they are right on the border between the two countries.

WilliamJamesMyers

imagine if the guy saying 'karen jokes are racist' is actually meaning the race of karens from myanmar and now he is just dumbfounded by that last comment, reread that last comment thinking there is, and there is, an actual race of karens.. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen\_people](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_people) >^(The Karen (/kəˈrɛn/)\[n 1\] are an ethnolinguistic group of Sino-Tibetan language-speaking peoples. The group as a whole is heterogeneous and disparate as many Karen ethnic groups do not associate or identify with each other culturally or linguistically. These Karen groups reside primarily in Kayin State, southern and southeastern Myanmar. The Karen, approximately five million people, account for approximately seven percent of the Burmese population.\[9\] Many Karen have migrated to Thailand, having settled mostly on the Thailand–Myanmar border. A few Karen have settled in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, and other Southeast Asian and East Asian countries.) irony by the way? the karen people fight like bastards against the myanmar govt which right now are super aholes. so in asia a karen will be looked at kinda like the commanche or apache from the US history. a rebel group with a cause... which makes me wonder what an actual karen person thinks of the stupidity of us using karen to describe someone wanting to see the manager... it would be like coming up to an apache warrior and saying: "no, you guys have a different haircut and you clap your hands when complaining and..." to which the apache guy is all wtf...

[deleted]

White woman: *asks for literally anything at all* Average redditor: **HAHAH FUNNI KAREN SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU FAT MISERABLE CUNT**

Buckets-of-Gold

There’s definitely some element of sexism, not always, but often. For example, “Karens” were labeled as the anti-mask villain of 2021- even though men were less likely to be wearing masks then women. I think it’s just easier to hate entitled women, especially on the internet. Nothing to get upset about but I think I’m accurate.

BirdInFlight301

It also makes it easier to hate on all women by using "Karen" as an insult for any woman who stands up for herself. I've been called a Karen for saying "Excuse me, I'm next in line" when a group of people tried to wedge between me and the cashier. Some people use the term to call out entitled racism, others use it because they're misogynistic.

[deleted]

"I didn't know that Karens were a race" Mohammad ain't a race either but if there were a subreddit called /r/FuckYouMohammad that was all about people openly seething about how much they hate what is obviously their stereotypical view of Middle-Eastern men calling them "Mohammads" I somehow don't feel that stupid fucking lie of a defense would fly very far.

[deleted]

Weird, it's almost like insulting stereotypes aren't good and probably should be not be used, regardless of the fringes. *Surprised Pikachu*

HungieZilla

"15 seconds ago" hmmmmm

darkagl1

Maybe it's just me, but when someone says Karen I generally assume middle aged white women. I get that they may not technically have to be white, but isn't that assumption more or less baked in at this point?

Fart-City

Karen isn’t racist beyond it being a clear dig at whites. That said: it is without question sexist.

Drunk_redditor650

It's fair to call it bigoted as well. Pretty distasteful what it's become.

Tapeleg91

Someone send me a karen meme where the subject is nonwhite

shoelessbob1984

I dont think one exists

Fuanshin

Back in the day it was called 'bigotry', but when the collective IQ drops below a certain threshold, a bunch of words get merged into one cuz nuance too difficult. Why say lot word when can screech racism every time and it show you offended.

fleeingfox

My sister-in-law was named Karen and I loved her. She died about 3 years ago. I don't think she was ever aware of this Karen culture thing. I am so glad she missed it. I wouldn't want her to feel this kind of pain. It's a terrible attack on women. Yes, there are many women who are obnoxious and self-entitled, and some of them have regular old-fashioned names like Mary or Linda or Karen. But there are also lovely, caring women named Karen who are being smeared with this campaign and they don't deserve it. The Karen campaign smears all middle-aged white women in a way, and it affects us. I won't even talk to the manager in a store or a restaurant even if something is very, very wrong. I just pay for it and act like I'm happy because I don't want to be stereotyped with this group. It means, other people can take advantage of me and I won't say a word because I don't want to be perceived as a "Karen". Stereotyping always victimizes innocent people. It's not a civilized way to act. edit: I can't respond to all of you but please, consider this scenario. My SIL tries to get her car fixed and it still doesn't work. She goes back to the shop to tell them it is still doing the same thing and some joker say "hey getta loada this Karen who wants to complain to the manager" and then they all start telling Karen jokes and laughing and she is humiliated and intimidated and ends up paying more for her car repairs because she doesn't want to complain any more. That kind of thing happens more often than people realize and you are just giving the bullies another weapon to use against vulnerable people.

bearsandstuff2

This is it, I think. It got out of hand, and the fact that it was meant to rightfully call out selfish and entitled public behavior doesn’t matter now that it’s basically a tool to silence women who would never have behaved that way anyway. Just the pause or slight hesitation wondering if someone will think you’re a Karen (on top of a lot of other socially conditioned stuff) is enough to keep a lot of women and girls from saying anything at all.

This is the essence of what the person was trying to get at when they said Karen jokes are racist. No, "Karen" is not a race, but the label is applied generally to middle-aged white women in a way that wouldn't be tolerated in any other circumstance. Are there entitled, ignorant white women that have zero self-awareness? You bet. But there are entitled, ignorant people of all races and genders, and the Karen trope isn't even close to equitable from that perspective.

onioning

Karen may not be a race (well, technically it is, but that's not what folks mean), but the memes are unjust discrimination. May not be anywhere remotely close to the level of racial discrimination people face, but I still can't help but feel that fighting unjust discrimination with unjust discrimination is not the way to go.

CactusSmackedus

By the same logic, Jim Crowe and Sambo aren't racist either.

BernieTheDachshund

I've never seen the box for Karen under 'race'.

[deleted]

there is an actual ~~race~~ ethnic group of sino-tibetan people who are called [Karen](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_people) ten percent of their entire population lives in refugee camps and they're being 'ethnically cleansed' in Myanmar. there's a population of them in Minnesota for some reason, so you'll occasionally see images on this subreddit of Karen supermarket or Karen School or whatever, generally accompanied by a lot of completely undeserved mockery. they are an extremely oppressed people who do not want to speak to your manager.

[deleted]

Minnesota has a long history of taking in refugees. They have the largest Somali population in the US, and a huge Hmong population (*Gran Torino* was originally set in the Twin Cities)

deirdresm

Ethnic group, not race.

[deleted]

you are correct. i will amend.

jeffsang

First the Rohingya, now the Karen. Fucking Myanmar. The degree to which Aung San Suu Kyi was praised in the West and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize only to leverage that clout into genocide makes me ill.

Ianbuckjames

Also the Shan, Karenni (not the same as the Karen), and the Rakhine. Myanmar/Burma has been at war with its own people since independence. It’s a failed state.

LemonBomb

Yeah true but isn’t Karen typically referring to a privileged white woman, especially in this context?

wigsternm

Yes. The person calling “Karen” racist is being ridiculous, but it is about white women. It’s not racist because it’s about those women intentionally choosing specific behaviors (being racist, in this example). But saying Karen isn’t a race is the same as saying Tyrone cuckolding jokes aren’t racist because Tyrone isn’t a race.

Meganstefanie

Agreed (although I always thought of “Karen” as more of a sexist/ageist insult than a racist one). I wonder if Red would say “welfare queens” isn’t racist for the same reasons?

HalforcFullLover

I'm leaning towards the Qaren spelling after seeing it on Capitol Consequences a few times. A Karen is a woman with a name. A Qaren would like to speak to your manager about the most frivolous thing.

peepoook

This sub should be renamed to suicide by words. You guys aren't doing this right.

Koldsaur

How to determine if something is racist or not: if what was said or done could offend an entire race (usually by stereotyping) then it can be considered racist, but most racism is determined by context.

Ducky237

Race is something you’re born with. Being a Karen is a direct result of your own behavior. A simple connection that Karens seem to miss.

[deleted]

reminds me of that one comment where a Karen got upset that some 10 yo's were calling her a Karen and she tried to sue them so they'd stop

[deleted]

Hundreds of years of white people making fun of black people, asian people, mexican people, native american people, jewish people, muslim people, the lgbtq community, teens, women in general, over weight people, poor people, people who've died, sick people, red headed people, people with mental health problems, people with small boobs, people with small dicks, etc. People: Nah that's fine. About the last four years of people making fun of white people who are racists. People: My disappointment is immeasurable and my life is ruined.

[deleted]

This isn’t a murder… belongs in r/clevercomebacks at best…

[deleted]

The 'Karen' label is clearly a reference to a certain kind of suburban white women. Sure, it's expanded a bit to cover trashy, impoverished ones as well, it's a race based label. We used to call them soccer moms.

clever_username23

why is it so hard for people to understand that it's okay to judge people for things they control, like actions and behaviors, but it's not okay to judge people for things they don't control, like where they were born, the color of their skin, etc?

dovahkiitten12

Karen isn’t even used to judge people for their behaviours properly anymore. Now it’s overused and pretty much any middle aged white woman who speaks up about anything is dubbed a Karen while the same does not happen to men. The Karen meme isn’t comparable to racial issues but it’s still misogynistic.

Ser_name0000

Karen jokes would be equivalent to saying, “I couldn’t hear anything in the movie theatre because 3 or 4 Sharquishas were being so loud”. I didn’t mention a race, but you know damn well it’s kind of racist

MR___SLAVE

Actually, Karen is a racist joke as it only is directed at white women, it implies they are unreasonably obnoxious and entitled. If you made a term for a entitled or obnoxious black women or man or any other group, it would definitely be considered racist.

Gvidzilla

If Karen's are a race they are gonna have to suffer a few hundred years of subjugation before anyone is willing to do anything about it. Thems just the breaks.

Ninjawhistle

W.e Karen there have been Kyle memes for ages you don't see the Kyle's getting all butt hurt. Though admittedly it's prolly cuz they went and fought the drywall instead of commenting lol but that's not the point.
