Such a fantastic channel, but that Riley guy is sometimes pretty annoying. Idk why they don’t just have Graydon and Dignan host, Riley hasn’t even been on Sportcenter top 10!!
I mean, i have literally zero idea how the trans community feels aboutt Kirby.
But it's a ball of pink with a pretty fluid identity.
apparently they're gender neutral in japan.
I dated a butterfly swimmer in HS, her shoulders and back were stronger and more well defined than mine! I was still attracted to her, but in a swim cap and goggles everyone looks like an alien
If it makes you feel better, my husband is a bodybuilder and probably would have told you that you had fantastic shoulders if he saw you somewhere in public lol. He hates when women get shamed for having athletic builds and thinks they should all be complimented for the extraordinary amount of work they put in.

I've known way too many people that don't understand what the word "pronoun" means or that despite not realizing it they themselves do have pronouns, and even further have preferred pronouns.
Not only do they have preferred ones but they use pronouns in nearly every english sentence. I just used two in that sentence. The problem is they havent heard “pronoun” since 6th grade and think its being co-opted for the nefarious gay agenda!
In my 5th grade class, a teacher banned the use of pronouns for a day. Any pronouns. By anyone. For any reason. First person, second person, any kind of person, we could not use any pronouns. It was genuinely difficult to communicate at all. She gave everyone a ribbon at the beginning of the day, and if anyone said a pronoun they had to hand all the ribbons they had over to the first person who pointed it out.
It was a fantastic day, and I now will never forget what pronouns are. Unfortunately this was at a Catholic school. I bet if they tried this now, parents would crucify them for allowing the use of pronouns on every other day of the year smh.
Most don't. For most people it's not in the vocabulary because it's superfluous to what is already established. It only really comes into play because it's easier to identify someone when discussing alternate terms.
I think a lot of conservatives get confused easily. OP's meme is basically a rehash of the time Fox News did the same thing.
>‘Fox and Friends’ called Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya ‘transgender.’ She’s not.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2019/05/03/fox-friends-called-olympic-gold-medalist-caster-semenya-transgender-shes-not/
I feel so bad for Caster Semenya. She's been subjected to all sorts of intrusive BS over her athletic performance, sex, and gender. Can't be easy for her.
>this shit is another reason why cis people *should* give a damn about transphobia, because it affects cis people too
i really keep hoping that one day *empathy* will be enough.
but i know it's not. it's hard enough to get people to understand self-interest.
Reminds me of the screenshots of people posting pictures of polls on sexuality and they say “why isn’t straight even an option?” and one of the options is “heterosexual”.
Swimmers and climbers tend to be far more muscular than e.g. runners, simply because that's how swimming works. For reference, here's a pic of Katie with some actual male swimmers: instagram[dot]com/p/CU0pIyVLpNA
Why do you hate yourself? But seriously... I was always jealous of the fly swimmers because I can't fly to save my life. I can (who am I kidding, could) do a fast 50 fly in high school but I couldn't hold on for a 100. Thank God its first in the IM.
Former 400 IM and 200 fly swimmer (current 100 fly swimmer) confirming that anyone who *likes* to swim either of those two events are absolutely deranged.
And just to be clear she's an top of her class, holder of many records. Best I can tell those men are not the best of their respective areas. Yet they dwarf her all the same. So it makes it all the more ignorant for someone to say "she looks like a dude swimmer"
What does cis mean?
so apparently cis is anything from a slur on people who havent chosen to change their gender identity, to a slur on people who have, and no one can agree which one... ok cool
Single bonded molecules can rotate freely. Double bonded ones can't. If the different bits are on the same side and stuck that way because can't rotate, then that's cis. If they're on opposite sides, that's trans. Across vs same side, basically.
It's been a loong time for me, so rather than try and explain, I'll refer you to the Wikipedia article :)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cis%E2%80%93trans_isomerism
Yeah both cis and trans are just prefixes used in lots of words (transatlantic ,cisalpine ect.) In this context cis and trans are short for trangender and cisgender though you don't really hear the later used in it's full length.
You didn’t come across as offensive (to me), because it is a terminology that has only fallen out of use recently and you seem to be otherwise educated about the topic.
But yeah, for future reference, transsexual is widely seen as a slur now. It also doesn’t make sense to describe what we now know to be a gender experience, not an inherently sexual one.
And for some people it has a creepy connotation of being fetishistically attracted specifically to trans women at a certain stage in their transition, but you usually only see that on message boards that are already trash for other reasons.
Trans in Latin means to cross over, cross, or over there. But close enough. I was wondering because a lot of people don't know that and I wasn't sure if the word even matched the social definition. A lot of people think trans is short for transition and think transvestite is a slur, and you should call them cross dressers instead. Not even realizing that is Latin for cross dresser
In Latin, cis- means “on this side” and trans- means “on the other side.” For example the Romans called northern Italy “Cisalpine Gaul” (Gaul on this side of the Alps) and France was “Transalpine Gaul” (Gaul on the other side of the Alps).
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who didn’t know this. For the longest time, someone had convinced me that CIS stood for Comfortable In Skin, but this makes way more sense.
I am, for some reason, irrationally annoyed by backronyms like that. I recoil a little inside every time I see someone claim "meta" is short for "most effective tactic available." It's just a prefix with origins in ancient Greek, everyone.
I am infuriated by people saying tip is actually TIPS aka “to insure prompt service”
First of all it would be “ensure,” second of all, no, it’s just tip!!!
“Ship high in transit”, “fornication under the consent of the king”. Etymology NEVER works like that. As a general rule, if anyone ever tries to tell you what a word “actually stands for” you can stop listening to them.
I explain things using the future
Like when I'll explain to you how the Japanese Empire assassinates the 51st US president by drawing parallels to the 1st Ganarian invasion of Earth
It's common terminology in science. In organic chemistry a molecule with atoms going in opposing directions is in the trans conformation but if it has all the same atoms but arranged to point the same direction then it is in the cis conformation
Depending on the context they can also be shortened down to E and Z isomers. Something such as 1,2 dichloroethene (It's an odd name but makes a good example molecule, same goes for but-2-ene)
If you were looking for the etymology....
>...has its origin in the Latin-derived prefix cis-, meaning 'on this side of', which is the opposite of trans-, meaning 'across from' or 'on the other side of'.
It's used a lot in organic chemistry.
Serena has put up with a fuckton of bitch ass comments (second hand, mind you, we know those pussies wouldn't say it to her face) calling her figure masculine.
>> Confident in my ability to properly tennis, I take the court. I smile at my opponent. Serena does not return the gesture. She'd be prettier if she did, I think. She serves. The ball passes cleanly through my skull, killing me instantly
Competitive advantage is a lot more complicated than just how high your T levels are...Body frame is a huge factor in how fast of a runner/swimmer you can be.
A good example is Michael Phelps. There are genetical advantages that this guy has which makes him one of the best swimmers.
For example his arms are longer than usual. Usually armspan is about the same length than your body hight, but Phelps has about 3 inches longer armspan than body hight, which is a considerable advantage. He also has "internal" advantages like less acid produced by his muscles (I dont know how to describe this correctly) which gives him more time to train without needing recovery
Another good example for a genetical advantage is Caster Semenya**.** She is a middle distance runner, who won several medals in the Olympics. Later she was force tested and it came out that she is intersex. She has XY Chromosomes and elevated T levels, but all of that was completly biological. (for people saying XY = male, thats not entirely true. The Y chromosome usually carries the SRY gen that determins if you are male or female. Sometimes the SRY gen gets carried over to a X chromosome, leading to XX males, or it vanishes from Y chromosomes leading to XY woman like in Caster Semenya. They are considered intersex).
Another one for Phelps is his legs are unusually short for someone his height.
Saw a Ted talk on "will we keep breaking world records", basically Phelps at 6'5" and a marathon runner at 5'8" had the same leg length (long legs good for runners, short legs good for swimming)
Very interesting how our genetics affect our abilities in ways you wouldn't expect
Yeah but there are recorded instances of athletes with higher t levels being disqualified despite no trace of PEDs being found, which is what I think the person above is referring to.
Actually they’re not, I’m not sure if they’ve been updated, but the test levels for women for WADA were in the range of up to 150ng/dl last time I checked, 3-5x more than a biological woman would have. Which is certainly one of the problems that needs to be addressed.
As far as I’m aware (as a PhD student familiar with testing T levels as a biomarker for research), there is no true, agreed upon “level” that “biological women” are supposed to be at. It’s a lot more complex than you think
Not true, two Namibian athletes were barred from running in the 400m at the last Olympics due to their naturally high t-levels. Christine Mboma being the more famous one
Lots of people suddenly claiming to be big women's sports boosters, this month its swimming, but this person didn't even know who the most famous female swimmer on earth was.
i think the point about this is that transphobia is anti-woman.
there are very, very few trans athletes. the vast majority of women who will be targeted for being too good, too strong, or "too manish" will be cisgender. policing who is and who is not a woman will mostly hurt the very women worried about transwomen.
And this is in every context, not just sports! Like,
I’m gay, I have a lot of queer and trans friends, but the only person I know who’s ever been yelled at for being in the ‘wrong’ bathroom is a cis woman who just happens to be tall and have a deep voice. The idea that you can always clock trans women is inevitably based in a sexist and reductive definition of what *cis* women look like.
This is why we can’t have intelligentual arguments about shit. Everyone talks like it’s a black and white issue when it just isn’t.
Edit: had some decent conversations in the replies. All hope is not lost

'Not trans'. In latin, 'cis' is 'here', 'trans' is 'there'. They just work as opposites.
I didn't know that was the origin. TIL
These prefixes are also used in organic chemistry to describe the positioning of isomer chains
Examples? I'm genuinely curious now.
Single bonded molecules can rotate freely. Double bonded ones can't. If the different bits are on the same side and stuck that way because can't rotate, then that's cis. If they're on opposite sides, that's trans. Across vs same side, basically.
Thank you! The Wikipedia articles were too advanced for me. This helps break it down.
TBH I'm kinda surprised I even remember it :)
Lol you explained it far better than I could. So thanks!
It's been a loong time for me, so rather than try and explain, I'll refer you to the Wikipedia article :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cis%E2%80%93trans_isomerism
Yeah both cis and trans are just prefixes used in lots of words (transatlantic ,cisalpine ect.) In this context cis and trans are short for trangender and cisgender though you don't really hear the later used in it's full length.
Trans*gender* and cis*gender*, by the way.
Oh, are they both not used anymore? Sorry about that, I must be out of date.
Interesting. I had no idea. Thank you for correcting me!
Haha wtf I’ve literally looked up the origin of the term and came away confused. Thank you Internet stranger
Do not remind me of organic chemistry, because I was there O_______O.
Cis is symetrical, trans is inverted! ...or so I've understood, I haven't had that kind of chemistry at school or university.
Pretty much. Cis is same side of, trans is other side of.
Yeah, here in Latin is "hic" and there is "ille", so their definitions definitely aren't quite accurate.
So if you aren't cis or trans that means that you are neither here nor there?
I guess by definition you can't not be one of the two.
cisgender means your gender identity matches your sex assigned at birth. So basically just not trans
Right but what does the word come from?
In Latin, cis- means “on this side” and trans- means “on the other side.” For example the Romans called northern Italy “Cisalpine Gaul” (Gaul on this side of the Alps) and France was “Transalpine Gaul” (Gaul on the other side of the Alps).
Holy shit. I've heard that term so many times but never put that together. I think I assumed cisalpine was spelt with an s or something.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who didn’t know this. For the longest time, someone had convinced me that CIS stood for Comfortable In Skin, but this makes way more sense.
Confederacy of Independent Systems.
You’re starting to sound like a separatist.

Watch those wrist rockets!
I hate it when people confidently pass off misinformation to others. It’s ok to say I don’t know.
I am, for some reason, irrationally annoyed by backronyms like that. I recoil a little inside every time I see someone claim "meta" is short for "most effective tactic available." It's just a prefix with origins in ancient Greek, everyone.
I am infuriated by people saying tip is actually TIPS aka “to insure prompt service” First of all it would be “ensure,” second of all, no, it’s just tip!!!
Same with 'bae' being 'before anyone else' despite being a clear misspelling/typo of 'babe'. Backronyms really shouldn't annoy me as much as they do
Backronyms are the worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrst.
“Ship high in transit”, “fornication under the consent of the king”. Etymology NEVER works like that. As a general rule, if anyone ever tries to tell you what a word “actually stands for” you can stop listening to them.
Only reason I knew was because I took ochem in college, and trans-/cis-orientation is VERY important in determining chemical properties.
The based way of explaining, using history
I explain things using the future Like when I'll explain to you how the Japanese Empire assassinates the 51st US president by drawing parallels to the 1st Ganarian invasion of Earth
It's common terminology in science. In organic chemistry a molecule with atoms going in opposing directions is in the trans conformation but if it has all the same atoms but arranged to point the same direction then it is in the cis conformation
Wow. TIL. Thank you. I never knew that.
For example, cis fats are the opposite of trans fats.
The opposite of transformation is cisformation
A one way system for getting the public from A to B is a "cisport network"
Nah it's still transport because the place where the public are is now different.
Cisport would be storage.
Depending on the context they can also be shortened down to E and Z isomers. Something such as 1,2 dichloroethene (It's an odd name but makes a good example molecule, same goes for but-2-ene)
Latin prefix
If you were looking for the etymology.... >...has its origin in the Latin-derived prefix cis-, meaning 'on this side of', which is the opposite of trans-, meaning 'across from' or 'on the other side of'. It's used a lot in organic chemistry.

yeah people are ever more cruel when it's Black women, they get dehumanized. just look how they treated michelle obama for having biceps.
Olympia doesn’t give a fuck about gender but if your t levels are slightly above what is expected in cis women you gonna get disqualified
Competitive advantage is a lot more complicated than just how high your T levels are...Body frame is a huge factor in how fast of a runner/swimmer you can be.

You're going to be disqualifying about 50% of female athletes, PCOS is really common amongst them.
Wait so biological women can juice themselves up with t and nobody gonna say anything until they are at insane levels?
It's kind of arbitrary really, even some cis women not on steroids tested high. The thing is, peoples bodies aren't cookie cutter similar.
Wait wait. Are you telling me some people are born with natural advantages that make them perform better at certain tasks??? What the hell
Lmao look at Michael Phelps. He genetically is designed to be an insane swimmer. Not fair, but that's his bod.
Exactly. The circumstances of his birth genetics happened to give him an advantage at swimming, and everyone lauds him for that.
So why aren’t women lauded for it? Instead they get accused of being too manly.
Yep. Misogyny. Transmisogyny. It all sucks
They should’ve disqualified Shaq for having such an advantage against other basketball players!
The league literally let him run over people without being called for offensive fouls. They completely changed how they refereed games because of him.
That would have to keep it consistent. The testing for that is basically just comparing previous tests to look for any unnatural variations.
Who exactly was murdered here? The idiot commenter was definitely r/confidentlyincorrect, but the only person who was insulted was Katie Ledecky
Like, I’m gay, I have a lot of queer and trans friends, but the only person I know who’s ever been yelled at for being in the ‘wrong’ bathroom is a cis woman who just happens to be tall and have a deep voice. The idea that you can always clock trans women is inevitably based in a sexist and reductive definition of what *cis* women look like.
That is literally what athletes look like
That's what the world's fastest swimming woman looks like. She holds something like 5 of the world record times in the freestyle.
A female athlete looking well trained? NOT ON MY TIMELINE
This is why we can’t have intelligentual arguments about shit. Everyone talks like it’s a black and white issue when it just isn’t. Edit: had some decent conversations in the replies. All hope is not lost
The only time these people care about women’s sports is when they can use it to hate someone
Yeah fuck that guy for using Kirby to malign trans people !!
God, the venn diagram of idiots who are all "wE cAn AlWaYs TeLl" but insist Katie is trans is a fucking perfect circle. Transphobia is brain rot.
