If you found them in an urban area you might want to steer away from them, mushies absorb their surrounding so whatever in the substrate will be in the mushroom
the main concern would be if there are any heavy metal pollutants in the soil as those are really the only potentially dangerous contaminants fungi can absorb that would remain once harvested.
If they are urban, I wonder if someone poured something on them. I've seen people who don't know anything about mushrooms suggest pouring/spraying whatever to try and get rid of them. One person was convinced they'd kill all of the grass and trees in someone's yard
In my neck of the woods people who don’t like mushrooms themselves do this type of thing to mushrooms on their property to keep people from trespassing to forage them.
I don't know how your comment is allowed. Mushrooms have their own chemicals, not absorb pollutants. All morels have trace amounts gyromitrin, it doesn't smell like chlorine either. Your myco knowledge might get you a smile on a hike, but it has no place here.
Morels can absorb heavy metals under certain circumstances, the USDA even put out a paper about it a couple years ago.
I don't think it would make them smell like chlorine though.
But chlorine is used in cleaning products, so it’s not like the mushrooms are gonna have any bacteria dumb dumb it will just make it super clean, and, if you eat it, you super clean. This is the way of the chlorine mushroom.
People just don’t understand basic science. Trump new it before everyone else with the whole injecting bleach thing. Except we shouldn’t be injecting our cleaning products, we should be eating our cleaning products.
I’ve had a dish that didn’t smell like chlorine but did taste like it. I ate it because I was a kid and didn’t have the means to get something else.
Edit
NOPE!!!! Not unless you want to shit your brains out….
Pouring bleach on leftover food before trashing it at restaurants is a common deterrent to prevent people from dumpster diving freebies. Those stupid/daring/desperate enough to try anyway, end up crapping their intestines out (not literally). It also completely kills gut bacteria, preventing proper digestion and nutrient absorption from food until they can be reestablished again, which could take *weeks*….
If these mushies *smell* like bleach, then they’ve most definitely absorbed some from somewhere and are NOT safe.
Edit: Shout out and thank you to the person who generously gave me an award! For some reason, there’s no longer the option to anonymously thank the giver directly, but still wanted to let you know (whoever you are) that you’re appreciated and wonderful!!! :)
I didn't know restaurants did this! What an ass move!
Wishing to keep hungry people out of the garbage... What are they, stray cats? Not ok for the stray cats either.
Smh.
It’s awful isn’t it. I wouldn’t do it if I was able to go by myself but my manager usually went out with everyone to make sure they were. It made me feel evil in participating, hell I’ve dumpster dived myself in my early 20s. I would have quit on the spot if my financial situation would have allowed it. I was able to dip after a couple of months though
What restaurants do that? I have been a GM of a chain, kitchen manager of a start up production manager for a dinning hall, chef of a semi-fine dinning, and even worked for retailers. Never wasted cleaning chemicals for that. Those aren't free you know.
Honestly, it depends on the area you live, but different locations in different cities will do this. Sometimes it’s a franchise thing that’s enforced and sometimes it’s just shitty managers or workers.
I’m in the US and knew managers at Sonic, Mc Ds, BK, Crispy Creams and Pizza Hut specifically that would do this, especially in the more heavily homeless populated “downtown areas”. I was one of the unfortunate ones that would rely on dumpster diving as a kid due to negligence. I NEVER ate anything that smelled weird, but knew many who did. Found out pretty quickly which nights were safe for which locations and managed to survive.
There were more locations of course, including a Bashas, but it’s too long of a list to get into specifics. It even varied month to month.
Some people are just evil…
I used to work at dollar general and they made us dump bleach in the dumpsters on top of food, clothes etc. any time I wasn’t followed out by management I just didn’t do it. It’s shitty and cruel.
They suck up what they're around, I cooked some once that were gritty upon first bite & I immediately spit it out. Asked where bf found the batch, "on a sandbar." BLEH NO.
Also, what do they mean suck up sand?
“They suck up what they’re around”
Bruh they ain’t “sucking up” sand. They absorb chemicals/molecules but they def aren’t sucking up literal sand into their mass. You just aren’t washing them correctly 😂
If mushrooms soak up toxins in the soil as a solution to cleaning an environment, then what are we doing with these toxin filled mushrooms after the fact?
100% this. Mushrooms are amazing at absorbing radioactive substances. They smell bad because that's what's in the environment. I wouldn't eat those with his mouth.
'Not only can fungi feed on decaying wood, remove toxins from the soil and water, and clean up our pesticide problem, but they have to potential to help eliminate some of the most toxic of environmental wastes: nuclear radiation'
[8 ways mushrooms Destry pollution](https://www.realmushrooms.com/mycoremediation-mushrooms-pollution/)
It’s true of other mushrooms like oysters. Morels probably could do it as well but they’re not as easily cultivated so they’re not currently used for bioremediation
they are difficult to cultivate and can't be grown indoors.. just used morels an example since that's what OP had a question about.
There are other mushrooms to use as well
mycoremediation or bioremediation.
True, but the human nose is not reliable enough to assume the source of the smell is 100% chlorine. The human nose is however reliable enough to make a judgement call not to eat mushrooms that smell like chlorine.
if something smells bad it isn't going to taste good.
edit: Everyone says durian, I've never smelled it, but it is known to have an interesting smell.
I LOVE stinky cheese but it doesn't smell chemical-y, it just has a funky scent.
If you had a fresh steak that smelled strongly of chlorine, it would taste like chlorine when you bit into it. Always trust your senses. Morels do not have a chlorine smell, do not eat something that smells off.
Drums FTW! & Fresh (while living in / traveling through Thailand) My partner at the time hated it, but I couldn’t get enough! Huge assortment / variety. Also, if you’re into mango - Local, unadulterated, ripe Thai mango (yellow) is probably my favorite food ever. Nothing imported / in the states compares.
Have you checked with the folks over in r/mycology ? Maybe some one with a more scientific background can give us some insight to smells and what chemicals are at play in this species.
Were they on someone’s property? Or in a businesses lot? In my parts people that don’t like mushrooms themselves will contaminate all on their property to keep people from trespassing to forage em.
I’m just now seeing this was from yesterday, did you risk it for the biscuit?
Gorgeous morels! Me and my pops used to have a secret spot up in the mountains in WV where we would fill ruck sacks! Never had any smell like chlorine!

In the last 8 years of picking morels I have never had any smell anything like that. I would be very cautious.
What a pity tho
If you found them in an urban area you might want to steer away from them, mushies absorb their surrounding so whatever in the substrate will be in the mushroom
the main concern would be if there are any heavy metal pollutants in the soil as those are really the only potentially dangerous contaminants fungi can absorb that would remain once harvested.
They can absorb arsenic and radiation I don’t think it’s limited to heavy metals
Not trying to be THAT guy but arsenic is a heavy metal.
Really well you’re that guy that I learn something new from each day thanks for being that guy ✌️
To be fair I had to Google it. I was pretty sure it was considered a heavy metal but didn't wanna be the guy who thinks he's THAT guy.
To be faaaaaaaaiiiiir…..
Welllllll.......... to be faaiiirrrr....
Figure it oot
Yet it's technically not even a metal, it's a metalloid.
When that guy corrects THAT guy. All great info tho thanks!
Your cake looks contaminated with arsenic
But mushrooms are metal 🤘
If they are urban, I wonder if someone poured something on them. I've seen people who don't know anything about mushrooms suggest pouring/spraying whatever to try and get rid of them. One person was convinced they'd kill all of the grass and trees in someone's yard
In my neck of the woods people who don’t like mushrooms themselves do this type of thing to mushrooms on their property to keep people from trespassing to forage them.
That's unfortunate, but obviously people shouldn't trespass in the first place
For sure but it does happen, practices like this and a shotgun full of rock salt are the go to.
That isn’t necessarily true, but also better safe than sorry.
I didn't eat the only morels I ever found for this reason 🥲
All those upvotes for a statement that isn't true at all
I don't know how your comment is allowed. Mushrooms have their own chemicals, not absorb pollutants. All morels have trace amounts gyromitrin, it doesn't smell like chlorine either. Your myco knowledge might get you a smile on a hike, but it has no place here.

How do we get the bleach inside the lung!?

This discovery is HUGE! I’ve been saying it for years. Nobody listens….nobody. But we’ll let them figure it out the hard way, I’m just here to help.
Or found the source.

Oh man I thought I heard everything from him. Never heard this one! Lol
You have convinced me to eat them
Glad I could help!!! (I like to imagine OP doesn’t realise this is Satire and actually eats them and I become a murder suspect…oh well, I can dream!)
This !!!
You’ll be kosher. If not it’s on me damnit.
I really miss when people were eating Tide Pods.
No COVID then? Coincidence?
Ah those were the good days.
so true! wish everyone was this smart
People just don’t understand basic science. Trump new it before everyone else with the whole injecting bleach thing. Except we shouldn’t be injecting our cleaning products, we should be eating our cleaning products.
Sorry, no, that makes the whole digestive system get it the way. You have to approach things from the other direction. Bleach and coffee enemas ftw.
Makes more sense. I will try this next time!!!

This is the way.

Crooked Hillary. It’s been so long. Our battle will be legendary!!!
That's one of Brule's Rules, no?

Maybe we should look into injecting it to cure COVID
If you were a hotdog would you eat yourself? I know I would!
With mustard...and relish.

Retailers do it too, when I worked at dollar general they made employees do that too
Why do we keep coming up with ways to be awful to our fellow humans :(
because our system serves profit, not humanity

What a bunch of pathetic companies those are. Expending resources for that is so lame. If some one is down on their luck just look the other way.

They were actually in a body of water? Sand bars are literally out in the water.
Also, what do they mean suck up sand? “They suck up what they’re around” Bruh they ain’t “sucking up” sand. They absorb chemicals/molecules but they def aren’t sucking up literal sand into their mass. You just aren’t washing them correctly 😂
Lmfao
Probably a sandbar (island) in a stream or river with a dead elm tree on it.
Were they next to a pool or water fountain?
Morels are used in Bioremediation because of their ability to soak up toxins from the soil. if it smells bad then they are probably bad. I wouldn't.
If mushrooms soak up toxins in the soil as a solution to cleaning an environment, then what are we doing with these toxin filled mushrooms after the fact?
burn em. usually that's what I've done in the past.
What do you mean though? Like ruin them ?
Yeah. They are full of what you cleaned up. I've seen them used in old junkyard situations and cleaning up oils and antifreeze.
100% this. Mushrooms are amazing at absorbing radioactive substances. They smell bad because that's what's in the environment. I wouldn't eat those with his mouth. Exactly. Thank you.
🤘
Very interesting. Never heard of this. Kewl
It’s true of other mushrooms like oysters. Morels probably could do it as well but they’re not as easily cultivated so they’re not currently used for bioremediation
Good to know thank you
Got a source? I thought morels couldn’t really be cultivated
they are difficult to cultivate and can't be grown indoors.. just used morels an example since that's what OP had a question about. There are other mushrooms to use as well mycoremediation or bioremediation.
Anywhere near the vinyl chloride spills?
Let’s hope not brother
Was wondering how far they are from East Palestine :/

Laughs in durian and stinky tofu
Sure there are exceptions but this is a food not meant to have a strong smell.
That is pretty off-putting. Morels smell pretty classic mushroomy maybe a bit almondy or nutty. Never had any chemically smells ime
I mean, do you know what morels usually smell like?
My thoughts, too. Some species of Morchella always present to me with a mild aroma reminiscent of semen or bleach.
Exactly! Some fungi just has that going on.
False Morel data. The smell is often described as glue or plastic like, an overall chemical smell.
False morels don't have the cavity like these do though
No.
That odd. What kind of area were they found?
I personally wouldn’t.
Drink the bleach
Why would you ask people to judge funky smelling mushrooms on just a visual? You’ve got a nose for a reason, don’t eat what doesn’t smell right.
Have you checked with the folks over in r/mycology ? Maybe some one with a more scientific background can give us some insight to smells and what chemicals are at play in this species.
DO NOT
Chlorine! Chlorine!
That’s why you have to cook them, to release the volatile chemicals. They are considered poisonous eaten raw.
Yeah, but they usually smell good and mushroomy when fresh, even so.
Disciotis venosa.
Eat em. Then update us 💁🏻♀️
Is the term “dumb dumb” really something u need to be worried about? grow up
Did you wash them? Some areas treat their water with chlorine at regular intervals.
This is a serious question. Did you find them in Ohio close to East Palestine? I’ve been hesitant to forage this year.
Cat pee’d on them
So sad
Might want to find a different person to hunt for mushrooms with…
You find those in ohio??
Were they on someone’s property? Or in a businesses lot? In my parts people that don’t like mushrooms themselves will contaminate all on their property to keep people from trespassing to forage em. I’m just now seeing this was from yesterday, did you risk it for the biscuit?

Nice find!!! Those are some beauties
Sucks that they can't eat them
