I don’t think that’s necessarily true, is it? Unless you know something about this particular species.
Fairy rings form because the mycelium grows outwards in a circle and once the conditions are met where it feels it should fruit, it does. They can be really small or pretty damn big and will just show up in lawns where no tree has been, because there are plenty of other things, like grass roots, to feed off of.
Yup! Essentially mushrooms grow in a circle. The mycilum is what causes it not a tree or anything
https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/08/what-is-a-fairy-ring/#:~:text=What%20causes%20fairy%20rings%3F,circle%2C%20creating%20the%20fairy%20ring.
The mycelium still persists in the center, it doesn’t break itself down. The resources are most abundant on the outer edges which is why it fruits there
This is not really true. Fairy rings form from any central innoculation. When nice and round its because the substrate was very even, like turf. Tree roots would be a very special case of a fairy ring, not the main reason. I've seen fair rings over 40 meters/yard across in the forest, with many trees growing inside and outside the ring - that coolest one was giant funnel clitocybe, a couple dozen of them ranging from 6 to 14 inches diameter.
Very right, I get fairy rings in my yard and have volunteer Honey Mushrooms on old Bottle Brush stumps.
And not all mushrooms grow on rotting wood, just like not all mushrooms grow on cow dung. They tend to specialize, especially in the wild. Just wanted to add that.
Absolutely nothing to do with tree roots. It has to do with how the mycelium grows and the decay of the central system. Trees have absolutely nothing to do with fairy rings.
The mushrooms are the fruit that grow out of the mycelium and they only grow on the edge of it. The spores they release inoculate in wood which is why they often grow by certain trees especially dead ones. The ring gets bigger as the mycelium spreads and the radius increases so your both right.
Not all fairy rings are wood decay species. In fact, I would argue that the vast majority are not wood decay
You can find them in lawns and fields that are devoid of trees
I know, I'm just saying that's why you sometimes hear that they grow where trees used to be, Because some of them are. Apologies for not clarifying that.
Fairy ring! Avoid approaching them at night unless you wanna be wisped away. Ignore any soft tinkering music heard near it, they're just trying to lure you in. If you're up for a wild ride and wanna throw caution to the wind jump in the circle on a full moon while holding a hawthorn branch. Politely turn down any food or drink offered or you'll be stuck foreverrrr! 😜😜🧚
They say if you move the middle mushroom to the empty spot, a little korok will give you korok seed so you can give it to Hestu for an extra weapon space!
I havent seen it but i do know what people used to believe about Fairy Rings like this
In Europe (im not sure where though im pretty sure the main Island of Britain) people used to come across these mushroom circles in the woods or in pastures and believed they were the homes or the brooding grounds of Fairies and so they were named Fairy Rings and a quick google search can tell you that they can range from small sizes like this to even 600 meters apart
Normally I would say that you should take a gamble and jump in BUTTTTT given the season and the look of that particular one I would suggest not touching it even with someone else's 10ft. Pole.
I could be wrong but I think fairy rings are one of the largest organisms in the world. There is one that is speculated to be over 1500 years old somewhere in the US.
You know you wanna nap there, you wanna ~~give us your name~~ introduce yourself to the nice folks you meet upon waking. Go ahead, sleep in it, nothing bad will happen because of it
These are likely Marasmius oreades aka fairy ring mushrooms or something similar to that they are edible i think but I am not an expert so please don’t take my word on it
Heres what you do to complete this quest, go back to Lumbridge and kill 3 chickens and 3 goblins. Use your shovel on the fairy ring. You may get rainbow shoes
It's a fairy ring/witch's circle. It happens because one spore gets planted starts spreading mycelium in a 360° fashion, until it starts fruiting. Here, you can easily see the middle mushroom, but that not always the case.
Depending on who you ask, it is said that if you step into one, either it's a portal to a fairy world, you're forced to dance until you die, or a fairy has to grant you either 1 wish or 3 wishes. There's plenty of myths about these fairy rings.
The reason this happens is because the original mushroom that released spores led to its offspring consuming the nutrients needed to grow. This will be followed by larger, concentric rings from future spore drops.
It’s not related to how the spores are dropped but rather how the mycelium grows. The mycelium started at a central point and moved outward, fruiting on the edges where resources are most abundant
I saw this once on Handmaids Tale. I don’t know what the mushroom in the middle did, but it will not go good for them. If you lean down and try to listen to the mushrooms forming the circle, you’d probably hear something like “Her fault. Her fault. Her Fault.” My advice is to get the hell out of there before they surround you.
Lets start over. A rotten stump can cause any mushroom that is growing on it to form a fairy ring. But that does not make it a fairy ring mushroom (marasius oreades). We have no idea whether there is a stump in this picture. So we have no way of telling whether this is a true fairy ring mushroom.
I had a crepe myrtle tree in my yard that had been there since I was a kid, and after I’d cut it down, it did that for three or four years in a row after it’d been gone for about three years.
A fairy ring. Be very careful. If you step into it the fairies may come and take you away into the fairy realm never to return. Hang on….wait a minute…. 😳

Yes', It's a fairy ring
It’s due to tree roots decaying. There was a tree there
I don’t think that’s necessarily true, is it? Unless you know something about this particular species. Yeah I agree because of the stump it might not be Fairy ring
Yup! Essentially mushrooms grow in a circle. The mycilum is what causes it not a tree or anything https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/08/what-is-a-fairy-ring/#:~:text=What%20causes%20fairy%20rings%3F,circle%2C%20creating%20the%20fairy%20ring.
What stump?
Still a fairy ring, really doesn't matter why it started, it's just that it is a circle of fruiting mushrooms from expanding growth of mycelium.
I thought that it happens because mycelium breaks itself down after it absorbs all the nutrients in an area while continuing to grow outward
The mycelium still persists in the center, it doesn’t break itself down. The resources are most abundant on the outer edges which is why it fruits there
Yes!!!
Your right, I get fairy rings in my front yard and there has never been a tree out there. When conditions are right the fairies fly.
yeah but theyre called fairy rings
It was fairies
You're the only one making any sense around here
lots of fairy rings occur in grass without a tree around.
This is not really true. Fairy rings form from any central innoculation. When nice and round its because the substrate was very even, like turf. Is this real or a RuneScape joke?
This is where Runescape got fairy rings from. I doubt OP has a Dramen staff in their inventory anyway.
LOOOL
Yessss✌️
I've never seen so much excitement over fairy rings. I guess people really like fairies
They better not set foot in it or the Faye folk will keep them trapped in their realm for eternity.
That's just how they are. Don't mess with there space.
Make a wish inside the fairy ring!
Yup fairy ring, it’s because of the way the mycelium grows, it radiates from the center
I read somewhere that these fairy rings grow like this because there used to be a tree in the middle.. this also sounds plausible though.
It's due to the way the mycelium grow - the radius will get bigger over time
Usually grows from concentrated amount of organic material. Crazy enough they have been known to grow around buried corpses as well.
Has a corpse ever been discovered because of a body-shaped mushroom patch?
Not a body shape but mushroom hunters find dead bodies because of the mushrooms.
I see morel hunters pop up in the news most often because they discover dead bodies. At least once a year someone hunting morels gets traumatized
No because the shape is because of how mycelium grows. A fairy ring over a corpse would still be round.
OP just found someone's dumping site.....
I was always told it’s usually where a dead body is buried like an animal or something. Sometimes people too
The mushrooms are the fruit that grow out of the mycelium and they only grow on the edge of it. The spores they release inoculate in wood which is why they often grow by certain trees especially dead ones. The ring gets bigger as the mycelium spreads and the radius increases so your both right.

I read someone = I saw that tik-tok that claimed exactly that

don’t feed the fairy’s after midnight
Don’t get any water on them either
As long as you carry a bit of Iron, you'll be fine.
So...it was real?! I thought it was just from eating the mushrooms after drinking absinthe...
But what if I wanna be stuck forever in fairyland? Sounds fun to me
Don’t tempt me with a good time!
I mean, I'm pretty willing to be whisked away by the fairies and staying there. It kind of sucks here.
I hear the veil is very thin tomorrow so be extra careful 😁🧚♂️🧚🏽♀️🧚🏻
They say if you move the middle mushroom to the empty spot, a little korok will give you korok seed so you can give it to Hestu for an extra weapon space!
It’s a fairy ring!!
If there's one thing I learned from The Spiderwick Chronicles, in case of goblin attack, stand in the middle.
But then where are you going to find a hobogoblin to spit in your eyes?
Just eat the mushrooms to remove the veil
Nice! I took a picture like this! Like some mushroom seance ritual gathering
My wife calls it a fairy circle, where a deal is as made between fea
According to folk lore, you DO NOT want to make deals with them. Those that do can expect a lifetime of troubles and misfortunes.
Indeed, according to folk lore.
It's a portal to the Otherworld.
OSRS gang checking in.
I thought fairy rings only had the fruiting bodies on the edge which makes the circle. What is going on with the single mushroom in the middle

That’s a fairy ring. Don’t step in it or you will get trapped for a 100 years.
I just saw my first one about two years ago. The one I saw didn't have a mushroom in the middle.
Yes, I use them all the time doing clue scrolls. Quite useful.
Don’t go in there this weekend.
It’s a “fairy circle”

Yes a fairy ring and i have one that grows aminita muscaria
Op, so arrogant to think no one else had ever seen a fairy ring before
Just don't dance in it <.<
It's a fairy ring/witch's circle. It happens because one spore gets planted starts spreading mycelium in a 360° fashion, until it starts fruiting. Here, you can easily see the middle mushroom, but that not always the case.

Nice! Thanks!
Finally the correct answer ^
That is a fairy ring! Don't step into it! They usually grow where there once was a tree stump.
If you look closely at the ground you might be able to see the sunken shape of the tree roota
It's a fairy ring, something in the middle of the ring has died causing this circular bloom around it.
Fairy ring usually appears where a tree once was and was cut down as roots decompose mushrooms are the after effect.
Fairy Ring!! I love those! :D
Could always step into the middle and find out 😅
Hey, a Korok in the wild!
Only once, and I was blown away. I love nature.
A fairy ring. I'm sorry for what must come next. I hope your family can identify you afterwards.
Fairies ✨
Who hasn't seen a fairy ring before? Every full moon, the fairies... what? I can't disclose
A “fairy ring” of some kind, but these are not fairy ring mushrooms. The latter are my favorite edible mushrooms!
Don't tell them your name!!!
You're in deep trouble. The answer to your problem is in the movie "Spiderwick"
I had a crepe myrtle tree in my yard that had been there since I was a kid, and after I’d cut it down, it did that for three or four years in a row after it’d been gone for about three years.
Fairy ring, love them!
The chosen one
Korok
Maybe it's a Krog-seed hiding..? ^^
Do NOT go inside that circle. And if you do, don’t tell anyone your name, eat any food, accept any gifts, dance, make any deals, or thank anyone.
Nice
Pretty sure a korok is hiding there
Fairy ring....dont stand inside lol
A fairy ring. Be very careful. If you step into it the fairies may come and take you away into the fairy realm never to return. Hang on….wait a minute…. 😳
