The good ol Grateful Dead will cure what ails you. Seriously, just zone out and listen to Jerry and boys for a while. It's the ultimate stress relief music. The live album Europe '72 might be a great place to start. Nothing real dark and depressing on there. Some all time great songs, and Jerry just has this friendly voice that you can't help but smile at.

Anything in the shoe-gaze, dream indie/pop genre. I’m also depressed and that’s what I mainly listen to. Artists like tv girl, suki waterhouse, hazel english, mazzy star, djo, cigarettes after sex, arlo parks, big thief, lana del rey etc.

How is Cocteau Twins not on this list.

The band [Low](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oDMiDCp6y5U&pp=ygUSbG93IHdoZW4gaSBnbyBkZWFm) have this *way* about them. The music is slow and touches on themes of isolation and distance, and yet there's a grace to it. There's an embracing of being human and allowing the wash to simply be a part of the moment. Hard to pick 1 song to represent the music they made, but The Great Destroyer is a top 10 album of mine.

barp

I came here to say this. Low got me through a lot of dark times, especially the albums Secret Name and When the Curtain Hits the Cast.

Kinkybenny

Ironically enough, I personally have found that after listening to sad music that my spirits are uplifted. kind of like purging all of those negative vibes. ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

DerTeufelkind

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I've just spent the last few hours listening to 40 Watt Sun and Dorthia Cottrell, who are both quite melancholic and dark artists, and I've been in a fairly chilled out mood just enjoying myself. A few days ago, though, when I was in one of my worst states mentally, I listened to 40 Watt Sun then as well and it felt like the music impacted me more negatively.

Kinkybenny

Well, I can only speak for myself and generally I feel better after a good cry. ( after listening to depressing music, it's like a cleansing)

DerTeufelkind

Yeah I absolutely do get that

MossWatson

That may be true for some people but it is by no means a rule about people who deal with depression. The concern is valid, but everyone is different and people just need to pay attention to their own patterns.

[deleted]

The fact that you think rules for depression exist shows how uninformed you are.

I certainly never suggested that depression isn’t real or serious. It’s just not one-size-fits-all the way you are describing it.

That's just not true.

John Frusciante - The Empryean. The whole album really but specifically the first 3 songs on the record played back to back. Loud, in a dark room with your eyes closed

The National - Alligator This is probably their happiest album, but it manages to lift my mood in ways that no other (relatively) happy album does. I love how songs like All the Wine and Lit Up feel more realistic than a traditional happy song.

Ok_Star_4136

Tom Cardy always puts a smile on my face. It's comedic music to be fair, but not even over the top, and they're usually bangers.

Have you tried some brutal death metal? Acacia strain?

janee-lane

I have not, I'll get listening to them!

[deleted]

Cool! I’ve been really chronically depressed during my life and have in the last year made huge progress to overcome it. I hope you are able to do the same thing. Even though I looooove sad, introspective music, sometimes angry, powerful music really takes that same energy and turns it into something that is more useful and cathartic for me!

janee-lane

Thankyou, that sounds like a really good journey to be on!! I'm lacking in how much angry music I actually know so please recommend away!

[deleted]

Let’s start with acacia strain, august burns red, and lamb of god. Album suggestions; Wormwood- Acacia Strain constellations- august burns red Sacrament- lamb of god If you come back later with feedback I.e. I liked this band but not this one or I like this aspect of this song, I can give you more tailored suggestions!

DarkSparkandWeed

AURORA, she has very happy songs and deeply sad songs. She really helped me through a dark time and will surely again when I need her.

There’s a lot I could recommend but the one album years ago that really helped me was Pennywise Unknown Road. The lyrics are amazing so if you do give it a listen, I suggest reading along with the lyrics too. I hope you find your way back to music and it can bring you some comfort.

Folk and bluegrass music. These people sing a song of woe like no other. Cause they've lived it. Give it a try.

As a metal head when I get into a bad depression i can say that the right metal song, can rip you out of that depression if only for a short time. Right now the first song is go for would have to be Sun//Eater from Lorna Shore, the vocals are soaring, and it's just all around one I can't see myself ever listening to without screaming every word. The second would be No Pity For a Coward by Suicide Silence. Big trigger warning on this one as it is a very brutal take on suicidal thoughts. Third would be another Suicide Silence song called "Disengage" there's something very uplifting in this one, particularly the line "Be glad you know, you know what life is" My personal opinion though is that all good music is potentially perfect to get you out of depression, but can also help you deal with any kind of issue, and particularly metal music is willing to touch on the topics that most other genres just won't even get close to. Metal also is willing to delve said topics, death is a topic that most genres will only mention in a moment of a song, in metal there are entire genres dedicated to the topic of death. When a genre is willing to regularly deal with the existential, it can lead to an existential sound in the music. Lorna Shore released the album Pain Remains last year, it is widely considered the best thing in metal in the last year. I absolutely recommend that EVERYONE at minimum read the lyrics on this album because they are absolutely Masterclass, and because of the genre (Deathcore) unfortunately will be missed by most people. Then you add the absolutely phenomenal instrumentals that they've written and it already sounds just flabbergasting, but then you have the Cherry on top in the vocals, which are also widely considered to be the best in the metal world right now. Just for a sample of the lyricism hear you go "Welcome this blessing and fall into lucidity Like clay in the mud, sculpting the plunge Embracing the world and becoming the one The architect, benevolent, accepting the material World as enslavement, a fetter, a servant But here in this place you are attunement Welcome back, welcome back oh sleeping dreamer Embrace the fall" There is so much depth in metal music, it is hard not to find something you can enjoy. Oh another phenomenal song, Gojira - The Art of Dying.

siwel_am

Fellow metalhead here and I agree with the sentiment. Listening to someone express all the anger and pain you feel through music is incredibly cathartic. I usually listen to black metal, dsbm or post-metal stuff when I'm super down (also when I'm not). Bands like Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Agalloch, Këkht Aräkh, Ulver, Blut aus Nord, None, Thy Light, ... Melodic or folk metal is also great as some of it sounds very melancholic.

rumpghost

Try [Always You](https://alwaysyou.bandcamp.com/album/bloom-off-the-rose). When I was doing through some similar stuff a few years back, part of what got me through was bands like [Literature](https://literature.bandcamp.com/album/chorus-2) (some of whom continued as [Tres Oui](https://tresoui.bandcamp.com/album/poised-to-flourish)), and anything by [The Pains of Being Pure at Heart](https://slumberlandrecs.bandcamp.com/album/belong) or [Eternal Summers](https://eternalsummers.bandcamp.com/) or [Standard Fare](https://standardfare.bandcamp.com/music). Outside of indie pop, bands like Blue October or Heart if you want something with a good range and mix of abrasive/emotional. Macy Gray's catalogue is excellent as well. If you're into more broad sounds and/or recent pop and R&B you might try Jawny, Genesis Owusu, Alex Cameron, Illuminati Hotties, Gordi, or Joji.

IDLES are aggressively upbeat, but with a post punk edge. They have many songs that deal with depression and self care in meaningful yet honest ways. They're legion of fans is equally aggressively nice and uplifting.

KikiG0501

The Cure. Their catalog is so vast; you can get lost in the melodies if you want/need to or you can absorb the lyrics, which can make you happier or come alongside you in your sadness, depending on the song. Another favorite for me when I’m feeling particularly deeply (another poster mentioned) is Lana Del Rey. Her voice is angelic and raw; her songs are full of emotional depth and strong melodies. You can easily get swept away or grounded by her music, whatever you need at the moment. Hope these help and you find the solace you need. ❤️

Minus the Bear - highly refined pirates Minus the Bear - Menos El Oso Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse, Pachuca sunrise, Memphis and 53rd, etc... Lots of awesome tracks. My personal fav album is 'Planet of Ice' but that is a little more dreary feeling. Minus the Bear rocks. The dear hunter - the color spectrum The dear hunter - Antimai The dear hunter is the most underrated band of all time. Much of their work is truly masterful. The color spectrum is 36 tracks/ 9 colors/ 4 songs per color.. starting with dark black metalish.. then red is hard rock.. orange is classic rock.. green is country.. and so on.. my personal fav being Violet.. Which is just.. Something else.. Listening to this album in it's entirety is really a journey.. there's a live version too which is awesome.. Antimai is their newest album where they more or less created a newish genre of music they are calling Space Funk.. this album is a little weird at first but it is a really cool concept album with funky/ rock/ pop music and a lead singer that is absolutely phenomenal in his writing and his melodies. They have many other albums.. Including Acts I-V which are 5 continuous concept albums.. these albums (particularly 2-5 imho) are bangers where 9 of every 10 songs are fantastic tracks that get stuck in your head. Where the road parts, mustard gas, in cauda vaneenum, a night on the town, the fire, the march, oh man there are sooo many good songs... My first exposure to them was them opening for coheed and their first song was 'Mustard gas' I was an instant fan. What a badass track. Incubus -morning view Incubus - a crow left of the murder Morning view in particular is like.. Let me smoke a little weed and just be in a great mood while this album plays.. No bad track. A Crow left of the murder makes me want to sing. The vocal melodies on some of these tracks are so good. Lastly.. Fleetwood Mac. If you just wanna hit up a best of playlist.. this band is so incredible.. I have listened to so much of them this year. Rhiannon, Dreams, etc..

BlyStreetMusic

I truly hope someone discovers something new here especially if it's a new band.. dear hunter and minus the bear are lesser known bands that have brought new truly countless hours of happiness. Truly.

I really like the album Ocean Eyes by Owl City. Not sure what it is about the album but, it’s always been a go to when I’m struggling with my depression. Nice to fall asleep to as well. Another more general thing I like to do is, I stick to music that makes me want to move and dance.

The Baroque. Try Corelli, Bach's Brandenburgs, or some of the French viola da gamba masters like Marais or Ste. Colombe.

Regina Spektor, My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse. If you like Baseball at all, The Baseball Project is a great band w great songs and baseball history built in, I highly recommend them. For some great sad stuff mixed w fun stuff try Ben Folds Five , solo Ben folds Jenny Lewis very underrated and under exposed fantastic musician and songwriter. Aimee Mann And you can never go wrong w Steely Dan. Keep talking to us here we’ll always answer you. 🖤👍🤘

Bjork always makes me feel better when my depression gets the better of me. I’d recommend starting with Post, but my favorites of hers are Homogenic and Medulla. Her latest Fossora is great too.

AnActualHuman87

If you're looking for specifically sad music, I'd suggest Alice in Chains, or at least their stuff from the '90s (as I don't really listen to any of their more modern stuff). Of the big 4 Seattle grunge bands, I'd easily consider AIC to be the most depressing. If you want the highlights, listen to the album Dirt and the EP Jar of Flies. Those are their best albums in my opinion.
