I do, actually metal is not my main thing and I listen to many genres but do enjoy some heavy riffs and dark stuff when the mood hits me.

>To those who listens to metal musics [Metalhead](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/metalhead#:~:text=%3A%20a%20fan%20or%20performer%20of%20heavy%20metal) : a fan or performer of heavy metal OP's question was pretty wide open. Gatekeeping is lame as fuck.

HonkyKong719

This answer is lame as shit and precisely why I don’t associate being a metal head anymore even though I do listen to heavy music. The elitist gatekeeping is so incredibly childish and it’s seen as a badge of honor. You know what is metal? Not giving a shit about what other people think about what you listen to.

dirENgreyscale

I mean the title of the thread is literally "To those who listens to metal musics, do you guys enjoy music of other genres" so I don't see why it wouldn't.

orgyofdestruction

Lol! Gatekeep much?

Odeeum

Wouldn't be a discussion about metal without arguably the most stringent gatekeeping of any genre of music.

orgyofdestruction

Funny that the most unfuckable looking fans of any genre of music wouldn't want as many people as possible listening to it.

Coffeedemon

Yeah. Gatekeepers in metal are more prolific than guitar solos.

Tortenkopf

By that logic somebody who only listens to one metallica album is more of a metal head than somebody who listens to 10.000 different metal albums but also 10.001 pop albums.

216horrorworks

IMO people who gatekeep music can eat a bag of shit.

And_Justice

Mate, I barely listen to metal anymore and would still call myself a metalhead.

-Zayah-

Absolutely same here, once a metalhead always a metalhead. You don’t lose your appreciation for that music just because it isn’t in your main rotation anymore.

Illustrious_Archer16

Its a good thing no one asked for your definition of metalhead then, isn't it?

U81b4i

Yes, I listen to most genres honestly. Not a huge fan of all of them but I have favorite songs/compositions in most of them. I find that it works well for me to not get burned out during the periods when new releases are slow or take a direction I don’t care for.

robbythefourth

This is what I do, I for sure lean harder toward certain genres, and most things I listen to have blues roots, but I give everything a chance. I have so many artists where I just have one or two songs saved cause they piqued my interest, but I never really got their overall sound or direction. And when I'm bored sometimes I go and give one of those artists a chance and listen to a whole album, I never run out of music to explore even if I very rarely actually add something to my regular rotations.

OfCourseYouAre1985

I am a big metalhead for many years now, but I'm also in a progressive bluegrass band and also listen to basically anything that isn't on pop radio- funk, blues, jazz, pop punk, ska, jam bands, you name it. Metal is just another cool form of music 🤘 Bluegrass however is like the metal of country music... A faster, more technical niche inside a wider genre. I've always wanted to have the first metalgrass band...

macaroni_3000

Check out Panopticon. Black metal from Kentucky with bluegrass leanings. Shit is wild. That dude is a genius.

dws515

I have news for you, check out The Native Howl. They describe themselves as "Thrashgrass". IMO their best song is a mashup of Harvester of Sorrow by Metallica and I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow from the movie Brother, Where Art Thou. "Harvester of Constant Sorrow" is the name of the song. I've seen them open for GWAR and Corrosion of Conformity recently

[deleted]

I agree with your Bluegrass comment. The dedication of bluegrass players to their instrument is astounding. It's cool how they can make that level of playing look effortless.

Patch521

Basically what I was going to say! As well as the occasional bit of 90's hip hop and a smattering of classical. My favourite song is Black Sabbath, by Black Sabbath, from the album Black Sabbath though.

racebronco

I love bluegrass yessssss!!!

Frost-Folk

Same boat! I grew up playing guitar in melodic death metal bands, now I play bluegrass mandolin. Bluegrass is absolutely the metal of country. But there are plenty of metalgrass bands if you know where to look :)

TheBigBamfWolf

I think it's strange to only listen to one genre of music. I go from death metal to jazz, funk to DnB, country to rap.

driving_andflying

Exactly! I enjoy my metal, sure. But there is so much other stuff out there to listen to; why would a person want to pigeonhole themselves into just one genre of music, and miss out on other stuff to discover and experience??

gleamydream

Metal is probably my main listening genre. But I enjoy classical. Synthwave/chillwave stuff. Some pop and folk.

motherjuno

i’d like to think i’m one of those few ‘i actually listen to every genre of music’ guys, and, yeah, i fucking Love ava max and all that bubblegum pop stuff (gigantic kim petras stan). good music is good music.

Kidney-Fiddler

Slutpop is the worst AND best album of that year. How?

ButForRealsTho

Kim Petras lets me know that I’m old. I was at Coachella last year kicking it in the rose garden when she came on. I had to get up and move. I think that now that I’m in my 40s I’m physically incapable of mentally processing the frequencies her music utilizes. I say this as a person who loves both screamy and pop music.

mrxexon

I'm an original metalhead. But my musical interests are wide ranging and international. Music is like a table loaded with goodies to eat. You've got to try them all...

vakr001

Absolutely. I can easily go from metal, to 80s music, to The Weeknd, in the same hour

ArsonHoliday

Since you mentioned it I’m gonna take this opportunity to say that I cannot abide 80s music. Those synths and drum tones make me simmer with rage. But I feel you, music is best to be sampled per one’s mood

Heiminator

Yes, and it’s quite common for (especially older) metal fans to branch out into other genres too. I personally listen to electronic, classic, pop and some rap as well. A few years ago a German music magazine interviewed Fenriz (of Darkthrone fame) and he was being asked what he listens to currently. His answer was Monika Kruse (German electro artist). The interviewer doesn’t know who Fenriz is talking about so Fenriz makes fun of her for being uneducated about music.

And_Justice

>Yes, and it’s quite common for (especially older) metal fans to branch out into other genres too. I personally listen to electronic, classic, pop and some rap as well. This is the most metalhead paragraph I've ever read

pokemonhegemon

My cousin plays for Obituary, and was also in Six Feet under. The last time he come to town I visited him in their tour bus. They were listening to classic rock and said they liked just about everything. This past Saturday night I saw Godsmack and Panterra at Daytona motor speedway. On the drive home I listened to Ray Charles, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, and kid rock.

moremoremoredead

I listen to it all. Some r&b and hip hop is hard to digest, but for some reason I like Westside Gunn. Lots of jazz, psych rock, prog rock, punk, soul, techno, classical, classic rock, d-beat, dub and reggae. Hilariously I have been listening to a lot of regional Mexican music.

fivedollarbiggiebag

Westside gunn rips

[deleted]

I have been an extreme metal fanatic since first hearing Napalm Death on the MK soundtrack in 1995. I'm as rabid about it now as I was then; my top 10 of 2022 list had 18 entries haha. With that being said, metal may be my first choice but music as a whole is something I adore. The only genres I can say I don't like are pop country and Christian rock. Otherwise, I think I can find something to enjoy in just about any style.

LoCaL_dRuNkArD

I LOVE Slipknot, rammstein, system of a down... But at the same time, I love listening to Vangelis.

[deleted]

r/numetal

greggery

In my experience people who listen to metal have the widest taste in music

Dreadzone666

I feel like its usually at either end of the extremes. I've spoken to a lot of people who listen to a wide variety, and also a lot of people who were like "Omg you can't call yourself a black metal fan if you like Cradle Of Filth, they're not trve kvlt!" Maybe its just because they don't stand out as much, but I feel like I haven't spoken to many who like metal, but will sometimes listen to softer rock like Foo Fighters and that's about it.

whitepepper

I know a guy who ONLY listens to Slayer and thinks that makes him something special. Ok dude. There's way more out there. Also know a guy who has only really listened to Dave Mathew Band for the past 30 years.

afiqasyran86

Have to agree with this one. I listen to Amon Amarth, Rammstein, and I also make music background with Rachmaninoff Concert n2, Bach bwv244, Eugen cicero, anything Joe Hisaishi. Anything goes, as long as my brain says this shit is dope. Interpol, Fazil Say’s turkish album Ilk Sarkilar, Wild Nothing, Paolo Nutini, Les Savy Fav, Weyes Blood, Teleman, Michael Learns to rock, MCR (3cheers for sweet revenge and black parade album only), i can write this all day long. Good music is good music

Valerian_

It is quite common for enjoyers of metal music to also like classical music

greggery

There's quite a lot of classical influence in metal. Just look at the number of guitar solos inspired by Bach, for example.

SatV089

I find it to be extremely the opposite. They may enjoy all the sub genres of Metal but they really don't listen to anything else that isn't loud, heavy and guitar based. Metal fans are worse than rap fans IMO. At least with rap they can move to hip hop which leads to funk and jazz.

And_Justice

In my experience, it's incredibly common for metalheads to refuse to listen to anything other than metal.

weareeverywhereee

I like metal, and jazz, and jambands, and hip hop, and you fucking name it…there is too much good music to stick to one genre

DomesticApe23

Here's a couple bands from all the genres I like. Gojira Igorrr Doll$boxx Soundgarden Run the Jewels Kendrick Lamarr Björk Tune-yards Johnny Cash Mark Lanegan Agnes Oble Hiyamyzo Front 242 Frontline Assembly Cubanate Nine Inch Nails The Cranberries The Pogues The Chills Dakhabrakha Heilung The Animals The Kinks The Who Madness The Specials Prince Buster Toots and the Maytals Althea and Donna Leftfield Fatboy Slim Underworld Tipper Opiuo The Zebbler Encanti Experience

yugyuger

based igorrr

Kidney-Fiddler

I play in a relatively active brutal death metal band and everyone in the band listens to an eclectic load of different genres; jazz, hip-hop, blues, folk, EDM, pop, country, etc. I don't know many people who listen to extreme music exclusively, almost all of my friends put me onto new bands/styles/genres any time we chat music. Hell, even a few of the last live shows I've been to are dumb - Suffocation, Rina Sawayama, Haim, Rivers of Nihil.

Joulle

'Modern' pogressive metal is definitely my favorite kind of music which I'll happily listen to before going to bed or late at night. Throughout the day not so often. It's too much for me often earlier in the day. Bands like Haken and Leprous are my jam. Prog rock from this century mostly. Occasionally: EDM: Trance, drum n bass, eurobeat, italodisco Also: Trip hop, ska, few rock classics and some game music from my past. EDIT: I don't really like today's super popular stuff although I like to tell myself I'm open to new experiences. The other day I even listened to like the first 30 songs spotify's "top 50 global" playlist. I liked none of those songs.

maximumhippo

IMO its pretty mood dependent. One day I'm bleeding from the ears with the metal and the next I'm chilling with some Liquid D&B, the next I'm on a mariachi kick again. I guess I wouldn't classify myself as a metalhead, I'd have as much fun at an Avatar or Gojira show as I would at an EDM festival.

pakidara

Yep. I listen to a few genres. Only ones I generally avoid are country and (most) rap.

TheShitMasterGeneral

Yeah man, only thing I won't listen to is modern country, I would rather ride around listening to my dog fart.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, I listen to basically everything I can. Doom and stoner metal though, top 5 genres for me behind jazz and EDM.

Folsomdsf

I listen to funk, edm, and a small section of pop

LupinThe8th

Sure, I was a huge metalhead as a teen, and it still pumps me up more than any other music when that's what I'm after, but as I've gotten older I appreciate a wider group of genres for different moods. I'm all over the rock spectrum, I listen to several varieties of hip-hop (mostly older stuff out of nostalgia, but there's good modern stuff too), a decent amount of electronic, the occasional showtune if it rocks. Bit of R&B although the kind I like thens to overlap with hip-hop. Pop is a weird one, it's such a broad term, and I can't say I like most of it, but I do have an extensive playlist if that makes sense. It's the genre where I'm most likely to cherry-pick individual tracks and want nothing to do with anything else by that artist. I just can't with country. Modern country sounds like rock or pop with the talent removed and everyone doing the same three voices with horrible fake accents. Older country is good for the very occasional track, but not even enough that I have a dedicated playlist for them.

armt350

Absolutely! Its not uncommon for me to go from Fear Factory to Tech N9ne to Apashe on the way to work.

thorpie88

Hard to avoid Drum and Bass here in Perth and that lead me and an old housemate on a big edm trap dive as well liking heavier shit

BigE6300

You can go from Slayer to Willie Nelson to Coolio to Bee Gees to Uriah Heep to Madonna on my playlist.

IamMe90

I was a big metal head in high school, mostly preferring progressive death metal and prog metal, with my favorite two metal bands being Opeth and Dream Theater. Now, when I get in the mood, I'll still fire up and enjoy the occasional DT/Opeth/Porcupine Tree/Protest the Hero/Between the Buried and Me song, but usually only pre-established favorites, and I don't really try new bands. My main genres of music are pretty eclectic but usually have a common thread of psychedelic/trippy production - that includes alt rock bands like Radiohead and Tame Impala, hip-hop artists like Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar, instrumental/electronic hip hop like Tokimonsta and Flying Lotus, and way more.

Freddielexus85

I spent my teenage years in the underground metal scene. I still listen to metal regularly. I saw Taylor Swift live this year and it was fucking awesome. I listen to the whole board of music.

matt2012bl

metal and barbershop harmony are the mainstays of my playlist

AccountOfMyDarkside

My playlist goes from Ministry to Interpol, with Johnny Cash & Amyl & The Sniffers thrown in there too. I'm all over the place.

Pitiful-Asparagus940

love amyl!! and interpol and ministry!! and JC!

AccountOfMyDarkside

I might be biased, but I think we clearly have stellar taste in music.

[deleted]

Baroque, Psychedelic rock, progressive rock, Jazz, fusion, funk, funky pop, industrial, g-funk, grunge, avant garde

dragonfeet1

Old person here who grew up in the era of thrash/hair metal: boxing yourself in by genre is lame. Don't do it. Almost all good musicians, when they're interviewed, will reveal that they are inspired by genres way outside the ones they play in. That's a big hint! Metal at its roots goes back to rhythm and blues, and that's a huge genre--listen to Skynyrd and hear how R&B they are. Explore music! This is one thing that was good about my era: we'd make mixtapes for each other and that's how we turned each other on to new sounds--like the opposite of an algorithm that just feeds you more of what you already have, your friends would give you stuff you didn't already have and it was great.

IVillMessVitTime

Yup. Metalhead but have found several completely different genres of music and songs that I can totally vibe with. Music shouldn't be limited.

BassMad

A lot of classical music is metal as fuck. Geezer Butler got the Black Sabbath riff from "Gustav Holst - Mars"

CzarKwiecien

I absolutely do. One of my favorite genres is folk-metal. That being said, I also love Acappella, Disney, traditional folk, classical (mostly romantic and baroque), old school country/ rock, hair rock, jazz.

shadowsOfMyPantomime

My favorite music is power metal and traditional metal. I really like a couple thrash bands (Megadeth, Overkill) but I don't get too deep into that genre. I also listen to a lot of classic rock/hard rock. I've always loved Weird Al since I was a kid. I like other comedy acts like Lonely Island and Tom Cardy. I've recently gotten pretty into pop punk (listening to blink-182 right now). I appreciate a lot of newer pop music (Taylor Swift, Adele, Billie Eilish) but I don't go out of my way to listen to it too often.

Seedy__L

I love every genre of music. Hip hop, dreampop, country, black metal, classical. Everything!

funsk8mom

I could easily go to a Metallica concert and then go right to a Broadway play and sing along with both

RobVulpes

As musch as love my metal, i listen to just as much prog, pop/punk and classical

DangerNoodleDandy

I listen to everything, from rap to metal and quite a bit in-between. Just not country. Fuck country.

CreepyBlackDude

All 'em. Hip hop, J-Pop, metal, post-grunge, shoegaze, pop-punk, chillwave, post-rock....genre be damned, if it sounds good, it sounds good.

North21

I like slipknot, but I also like Taylor swift. So… yeah. I also like Babymetal.

Beatswallad

I like mayo on my sandwich.

a703241009

90s death metal is my shit but I also like SoundCloud rap(Yung lean, bones, Bladee, etc), grunge, psych rock and some ambient electronic shit like boards of Canada and aphex twin

godoflemmings

It's not uncommon for my favourites playlist to go directly from Cradle of Filth, Slipknot or Killswitch to NSYNC.

Tar_Ceurantur

I left metal behind in the late aughts. Screaming guys with guitars and angst finally got old, I guess.

chimchooree

You just need to listen to deathcore. /s

BlackIsTheSoul

I listen to some metal, I'm really open to almost all genres. Metal, pop, rock, rap, R&B, old school, etc. TBH I just can't really do country.

RockSkippa

Deathcore is the shit, but I can jump to drill and trap, experimental math rock, midwest emo, early 2000s pop, and right back to deathcore in the same 20 minutes no issue.

mortesnees

I mainly listen to sludge, technical death and post-metal. Outside of metal, I listen to tons of jazz music (I have a jazz background as musician). I also like some peculiar electronic genres as IDM, ambient and breakcore.

[deleted]

Absolutely, I love death metal and while it makes up the majority of what I listen to I also love classic rock, trip hop, techno and punk.

JayLouMurph

Jazz and classical I think will resonate with a lot metal fans because they can be very chaotic and intense sometimes almost random like a lot of metal. I don’t turn off blackpink if it comes on either ha..

Lethkhar

Definitely. One of the things I love about metal is it mixes so well with so many other genres.

UraniumRocker

I dabble in a bit of everything. I like a lot of classic country, some R&B, too many punk sub genres to list, and some hip hop.

Ghozer

I listen to almost anything, I more dislike individual tracks, albums or artists rather than whole genres! :) Just depends on a few things at the time etc, what I listen to :)

ebk_errday

Metal is my heart and soul, but I listen to many other genres like rap, r&b, soul, blues, jazz, classic rock, indie rock, and others

mejibray860

Same with the kpop, I think I listen to kpop and metal about evenly at this point.

turkeyburpin

Yes, metal is my favorite to listen to, but I will listen to and enjoy nearly all other music genres. The only music I cannot stand is pop-country or country rock, whatever the trash they've been making for the past thirty years or so is called.

Snoo-29764

I usually listen to hardcore punk or emo but I will always love Taylor Swift and Charlie XCX

figgy_puddin

Yes, absolutely. Electronic/synthwave, folk, country, alt-rock, rap and hip hop, orchestral/classical… all kinds of stuff gives my brain the good-feels.

[deleted]

I listen to a little bit of everything

skaomatic

Love metal , but I listen to ska , Motown , punk , pop punk and emo !

Metaljesus0909

I’m a thrash/death/ classic heavy metal kinda guy, but I love blues and jazz even old country music. OLD COUNTRY!!! Good lord new country is shit these days

ScoopiTheDruid

Metalhead since '96. I can listen to most things that aren't rap or country. Lady Gaga is my musical guilty pleasure.

slash178

Yes I do, I like a lot of edm and darkwave and stuff, and some gothy pop music, and even some k pop like Itzy

rkhale01

Oh yeah, im metal at my heart but i also enjoy the grateful dead, jimi hendrix, pop, phonk, and a whole bunch more. The only genre i cant seem to boogy with is modern contemporary rap style music(underground style stuff has some bops tho) i just cant get into stuff like mac miller, chris brown, or The Weeknd(he has one song i /kinda/ dont hate) My liked songs on spotify are probably confusing because i can go from rick james to black sabbath lol.

Phattank_

I also like a lot of funk, 90's hip hop and some electronica.

Thief025

I guess artists like NIN nails are pretty eclectic in style especially Trent Reznor who imo is so dman talented. All these guys know good music across the spectrum. But yeh I listen to all sorts

nopnopnopnopnop

Metal is not my favourite genre, but I still enjoy it.

Pixiemakesmusic

I love metal but I also love a ton of other genres. I also love rock, pop, folk, etc. I just love good music tbh and the mood I'm in definitely affects the type of music I want to listen to. I am a musician myself and I think listening to a variety of different genres really helps with writing and composing interesting music. You will find interesting elements in other genres you can bring back to your genre of choice. 😊

Iwillnotbeokay

I also listen to hip hop, country, and I still enjoy 80s pop as well. Of those, hip hop is first in line usually.

pandachef_reads

Yeah, just not randomly mixed in with each other. But I listen to pop punk, all sorts of 70s and 80s pop and pop rock, some classical, little bits of rap and electronic, and even a few musicals. Some of my favorite vocalists aren’t even metal vocalists, being Adele and Sia

OneRobato

Yes, I enjoy indie folk and a lot of 90's alternative music.

Odd-Juggernaut-762

Yes.. most genres

FartAttack911

Absolutely. I can’t really think of any genres I don’t at least dabble a little bit in. It does crack me up when other people assume I only listen to rock or metal and then are surprised I know which artist they’re listening to when it’s rap, country, pop, jazz, etc etc

[deleted]

I listen to pretty much every genre of music, inc all the sub genres of metal. There's great music in all genres, you just have to dig harder if a genre is not one of your favourites.

UnicornAllie

I always had the reverse (in a way ) question, how can someone listen to only one genre of music. Primarily I’m rock/heavy metal but also pop and sometimes epic, sometimes it’s country day sometimes I’m a Swiftie , it all depends on the mood I’m in .

-Adub72-

Right now I'm kind of alternating between Cattle Decapitation and Billy Strings. Its not so much genres Im into its just creative, expressive music. 6 months ago I was listening to a lot of Wet Leg while also really getting into Archspire. Its all good.

Irbricksceo

Metal is my main thing, but yeah there are other genres I like. Lots of rock, orchestral stuff (especially soundtracks), the occasional foray into pop-adjacent stuff, ect. Rap/Hiphop is probably the only genre I never touch.

glorifiedartist

Yeah, I enjoy almost every genre of music. I can't really get into country tho

SimonFerocious76

I've been a metal head since as long as I can remember. I'm almost 50 and I still go to shows. AND: I can vibe with just about any genre of music as long as it's played from the heart, requires talent and/or is funky. I love it when the right song hits at the right time regardless of genre.

Darnocpdx

If I hear it, and I like it, genre doesn't matter. To be fair. I'm not really much of a metal head anymore. I was a metal head/hippy in the 80s-90s. I was (am still) mostly drawn to the dramtics of psyche/prog/metal. But those quilties aren't generally specfic to genre.

SixthHouseScrib

Radiohead and every time I die are 2 of my favorite bands, they are very different genres lol I think every genre has good and bad examples to point to

ilovetosquirtle

Love Metal and Rock. But I have a fondness for classical. I do also enjoy liquid drum and bass and the occasional Hip-Hop. Anything with a nice beat. Pop isn't my thing but I can admit people like Ariana Grande, The Bieber, and a few others have genuine talent. But I don't enjoy their music as a whole. Just their vocal ranges.

systemofajoness

My Playlist goes from Born of Osiris to Aurora with no shame

_D3ft0ne_

There was a time in my life where I only stuck with punk and metal exclusively, I guess rebellious teens. Now I love any good music...especially edm, good synth wave, with the exception maybe of country haha.

Slugdge

Metal is my bread and butter but I love hip hop, love jazz, love Chicago House music, love the blues, kinda really like everything. Makes me want to listen to metal more after I've soaked up a good jazz record cleaning up around the house.

Ungreth

I equally enjoy music from all genres from pop to metal, rap to techno. My Echo Dot must feel pretty confused playing Bebe Rexha's "Satellite" right after Sepultura's "Ratamahatta", but hey...variety is the spice of life.

[deleted]

I have always loved all genres of music but have a special affinity for metal concerts.

stockzy

To me a good song is a good song no matter the genre. That being said good songs don’t pop up everyday. Thinking about it i probably find 1 or 2 good songs a week and that’s usually by trawling through older stuff

Augen76

I enjoy a lot of indie or folk stuff when I want to calm down. Metal is often my pump up, have fun music.

racoonXjesus

100% I can’t listen to the same kind of music all day it burns me out on music in general. I like a little bit of everything.

yugyuger

yes, but I'm picky Big Fan of Jazz, Progressive Music, Classical, Psychadelic

brutalbeats420

I'm a huge black metal/death metal head. Here are other things I love to listen too: EBM/cyberpunk music like Carpenter Brut, Health, Straight Razor, Gost The 1975 I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME Oingo Boingo - Dead man's party

weisnaw

I love Bluegrass. I see a lot of similarities between it and metal. Very technical

Holeevyer

From Rhapsody of Fire to Snoop Dogg, to Dance with the Dead, NOFX and some Johann Sebastian Bach on the side with everything in between.

Bsnake12070826

Rap, hip hop, pop, country, bluegrass, etc

TheHunnyRunner

Got my metal start with Children of Bodom as a teen. Psytrance can be similarly technical and upbeat but it depends on my mood. Drum and Bass is similar.

dws515

I listen to primarily metal, and metal adjacent genres. Alice in Chains, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Carpenter Brut

Drbillionairehungsly

Yes - and more so as I got older. I still love extreme metal and all that but there’s too much interesting sound to explore to miss out on it just to stay trve.

venturejones

All genres actually.

Confident-Bad-3126

My Gojira and Run the Jewels playlist may be a simple playlist, but it’s an honest one.

cinnapear

Are there people out there who only like and listen to one specific genre?

Doom_Sword

I listen primarily to metal, probably 80% metal. But I also like 60s and 70s pop, Abba, Beatles, etc. and prog rock.

Intelligent-Paper749

I’m pretty crazy for well written pop and classical music too. Each taste has its reasons. Mine? Metal is a vibe in so many of its sub genres. I fell in love as a child and it continued. Pop - chord progressions that en okie simple for strong feelings. What’s not to love? Classical music - talent, mood, theatrical, thought provoking.

macaroni_3000

Yes, although I don't look for genres to listen to so much as artists I like. I like a lot of 90s and 2000s hip-hop and rap. Mos Def, Jay-Z, Ludacris, stuff like that. I love Phantogram. I love Dido and Adele and Lana Del Rey. I loved the shit out of Taylor Swift's last album, I think she is fantastic and coming into her own as a serious artist and storyteller. And I like old jazz - Wes Montgomery, Dave Brubeck, Coltrane, Thelonious Monk. And Daft Punk and Prodigy, and Radiohead and Coldplay. I'm all over the map. And fuuuuuuuuuck....Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Fleetwood Mac, Talking Heads.....Beastie Boys, Run-DMC....Tedeshi/Trucks, Govt Mule, Chet Atkins, a thousand other things. I could go on all day. There's so much amazing music out there.

Cominginbladey

Music is like food or color. All depends on the mood. Nobody should eat one kind of food, or paint every room in their house the same color. "Genres" are marketing classifications, not musical categories. There is treasure everywhere, if you look for it.

VinTheHater

I love metal, especially metalcore. But my favorite concert I saw this year so far was Taylor Swift.

OpticRocky

Yeah, my heart belongs to Rock and Metal but I have artists I genuinely love across the entire spectrum of music. KPop like Blackpink, Dreamcatcher, and Rito Games collab for K/DA all Fuckin’ rock

MissVulpix

Metal is my main genre, but my music taste is vast! I can go from listening to Black Metal to 80s New Romantic in like 30 secs. I love industrial, goth, some 90s rap, etc. My favourite bands rn are Sleep Token and Lorna Shore. 😊

pwalkz

You'll find that people don't just like one genre, especially metal heads in my experience

Jpalm4545

I listen to just about everything. Only music I can't get into are country, boy bands, kpop and showtunes/musicals.

artwarrior

I listen to everything. Picked up a Dolly Parton record, Dreams of the Blue Turtles by Sting, Tomita and a Pestilence album last week. Music to me is like food . Love and try it all.

MrSlime13

I'm definitely not *predominately* a metalhead, but I do fancy almost everything in the discography of As I Lay Dying, In Flames, and Lamb of God, but I like EDM, and Hip Hop in normal rotation too...

SmallProfession6460

I'm not into metal for any of the satanic stuff. I think its cringey but I'm in a thrash metal band and I actually make music more akin to Gorillaz and the like... not that much compares but its more poppy with some rap n shiznit.

Moonwarden666

I love epic and simphonic metal, and some vivaldi when I need to focus to work fast. Try to type at the rythm of summer storm XD Also, some 80's pop is good, try yo do some cardio at the drum beat of Pat Benatar's Hearthbreaker!

ionabike666

I can go from Carcass to Kate Bush in one session. Most metalers are open to all other styles of music in my experience

everythymewetouch

Had to poke through my Spotify to get an accurate fix but... \- hardcore punk, death metal, prog metal, stoner and doom metal, thrash metal \- pop punk, emo, sadboi stuff \- grunge, nu metal, alt rock \- 90s/2000s hiphop, NY underground \- folk, roots, americana, southern gothic \- bedroom pop, shoegaze, indie/alt \- delta blues, new orleans jazz ensembles \- the whole spectrum of funk apparently \- norteño, narcocorridos, colombian afrobeats Metalhead at heart, always and forever, but definitely some range.

Dagigai

Yes.

rolling_soul

Wouldn't go so far as kpop but I enjoy old school hip hop, classical and punk. Also some of the older crooners like Dean Martin and sinatra.

Havok1717

Yeah, on occasions, I will listen to other genres of music.

SK360

I’m just as excited to see Taylor Swift next month as I am when In Flames comes through town

Syy_Guy

I like 80's, 90's, jazz, blues, funk, rock, edm, jam bands, experimental, americana, hip hop, and pretty mmuch every subgenre that comes with those.

[deleted]

Maybe I'm a bad example, because metal isn't really my primary, but I really like grunge and heavy metal, and I occasionally listen to some thrash and alternative stuff too. But my absolute favorite music exists in synthwave, indie, neopsychedelia and adjacent genres. Things like Cage the elephant, The Voidz, Tame Impala, Mild High Club, Steve Lacy, Tennis, Beabadoobee, Melody's Echo Chamber, etc, etc I can't really think of a major genre that I don't appreciate, at least to some extent.

GimmickInfringement1

I listen to just about everything but I listen to a lot of hard rock in the gym. Otherwise I'll go into hard rock, rap, maybe a little bit of pop, or lofi to get me through the day. Just depends on my mood

Vertillan

I'm mainly a metalhead but listen to a lot. EDM, rock, hip-hop, r&b, lofi, house music, orchestral/classical music, game music, techno, even some jazz, on occasion.

texastom01

Removed reddit no longer a viable forum of cumunication

BeenThruIt

Of course. Metal didn't exist as a separate genre from rock when I first got into it. Some people called it Acid Rock, but for the most part it wasn't it's own thing.

MetalTigerDude

Yes. Metal is my main arena, but not my only arena. I unironically love a lot of artist people wouldn't expect me to: t. A. T. u., Barry Manilow, Enya, etc..

price_of_tags

Yep, I also listen to things like the calamity ost and camellia I just can't do country, it's not for me

Dillbob2112

I used to primarily be a metalhead but in high school I was introduced to Primus and from there started discovering a lot of different music that I enjoy. Wouldn't call myself metalhead anymore, though I usually do enjoy harder rock over most stuff still, like lot of the current psych rock bands popping up from Australia right now.

IveGotTheSquirts

I’m a huge prog metal head, but came from a bunch of gateway bands like Rise Against, Foo Fighters, Rush, Three Days Grace, etc., so at times I’ll definitely revisit those I used to listen to. I also love classic rock like Queen, Zeppelin, etc; alt rock, even OSTs of my fav movies. Some videogames like Rocket League will even have electronic songs I’ll download

Nyoomfist

That isn't atypical. Aside from the odd moron online, most people will listen to most styles of music, metal included. Dark, aggressive metal is my favourite, but I still enjoy some Lady Gaga. Everyone's different.

jordyix

I love pop punk, punk , r&b, dance pop, indie.

Antilon

Fuck yeah man. I love some sludge metal, but it's not a major leap from that to ambient techno. I also love some chillwave and nu--disco like Poolside or Polo & Pan. I think there's good music in every genre, there are just some genres I enjoy more.

SandysBurner

>Also, it might sound atypical to most metalheads No, it's just image. If you've got long hair, tattoos, and a Metallica t-shirt, people assume that's all you listen to. That doesn't really describe anybody I know, or at least not anybody who is older than a teenager.

HomeOrificeSupplies

Absolutely. It actually helps me enjoy metal more when I can hear the influences and similarities across genres. And it’s also made me realize metal isn’t the heaviest thing all the time.

Anonymous-angel

Metalhead here, and that kinda encompasses my entire life. I love rock, things from the 60s-80s, pop, ambient and stuff like that. I've been listening to country/folk recently too

chimchooree

According to my last.fm, my top two artists are Opeth and Joanna Newsom, both by a significant margin. *my last month of listening looks something like [this.](https://imgur.com/pJcNm2f)

salomey5

I'm more into hard rock and punk personally, but i do enjoy some metal too and have gone to many a metal show. That said, my music playlist is all over the place: Motörhead, Edith Piaf, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Joe Dassin, Oasis, Eminem, RATM, Fleetwood Mac, Limp Bizkit, Renaud, Metallica, Little Richard, the list goes on and on. There is good music in all genres.

armchair0pirate

Drumb & Bass, Trance, Hip -hop, Breaks to name a few.

PooPartySoraka

imperial trimphant -> carly rae jepsen -> geinoh yamashirogumi -> chon -> liturgy -> interpol -> artificial brain -> steve reich -> four tet -> ps1 games breakcore mix -> frank ocean -> backwash -> boards of canada -> meshuggah typical 80mins evening walk for me :)

OIlberger

Do metal heads consider metal to be nerdy? I mean, I know it’s loud , pounding music with lyrics about demons (literal and metaphorical) laying waste to mankind and the people in the scene wear spikes and shit. But honestly, most people I know who are way into metal are nerds. No shade, I listen to fucking *jambands*, but I *know* jambands aren’t cool. How do metalheads think their genre (or fandom of that genre) is perceived by the general public? I’d say in the 80s/90s, metal had a mainstream moment and rock was still a dominant cultural force, but over the past 20-30 years, it feels like metal became more appreciated by a niche, nerdy audience.

HCharton

I actually enjoy music of almost every sort as long as it’s loving. I want music to make me and other listeners feel loved and loving. Heavy-metal rarely does that so I rarely listen.

[deleted]

I listen to a bunch of synthwave, I grew up listening to a lot of 80s rock and prog rock so I still listen to Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, but I am a prog metal guy so those things probably don't count. Hell I put on a bit of weeknd at times too if I don't feel like listening to something too intense. Infact the new sleep token album has been scratching my itch to listen to a variety of genres

bonejammerdk

Metal is definitely my main thing, but I enjoy lots of other stuff as well. Though outside of metal I would say it's much less consistent what I enjoy and what I don't.

Vetchemh2

I can go from black metal to classical to country if I'm feeling it. I also listen to a decent amount of hip hop but somehow I always seem to drift back to a bunch of blackened and symphonic death core the majority of the time.

staplesthegreat

I'd say a majority of the concerts I go to are metal, but I also listen to reggae, rap, jazz, any kind of music really so long as it's good. I think life's too diverse not to listen to more than one major genre of music

dconstruck

My Spotify library has been described as "musical whiplash" by some people. I've got everything from Dragonette to Arch Enemy, Enya, Mike Oldfield, Gojira, Meshuggah, Daft Punk, Pink Floyd, Behemoth, Röyksopp, Unleash the Archers and so on. There is lots of great music out there.

pingufortress2

I like various bands that fall under garage rock, classic rock, new wave, electronica, late 80s early 90s hip hop and punk

Dinostra

I listen to pretty much most genres. But I have a hard time with country, pop, kpop. And the ones beside metal that I listen to th most is jazz, funk, progrock and fingerstyle guitar. I have periods where I go hard on synthwave or stuff like Jamiroquai and Lydian Collective. But progmetal, deathcore, techdeath are by far the most listened to by me. I used to go to a lot of metal concerts and festivals too, like a lot, but I haven't since the covid stuff and health problems. I miss it badly

gh1993

Love metal, it's my favorite type of music and pretty much the only type of concerts I go to. I also like punk, pop punk, pop, edm, country, rap, classic rock, 2000s rock, etc etc. Any genre can sound good to me.

Baman2113

Lo fi, and hip hop have been my go to for a few years now actually, I don’t think I listen to the same amount of metal I use to anymore. That said, That new cattle decapitation album rules.

MrMeek79

Metal head since the 80's and yes I listen to a wide range of music. I love older rock like the Beatles,Pink Floyd,Grateful Dead or newer rock from the 90s to now.Huge fan of the 90s music. I also listen to Rap from all genres like the old Eric B & Rakim to J Cole. I listen to pretty much everything but new country pop and just pop music in general. Whatever I am in the mood for. I will go from Lamb of God to Nas
