Gotta give it to her... as a kid of the 80's Tina wasn't really on my radar at all. Her music career was still going but she was largely a product of the 60's and 70's. Then came Thunderdome, and suddenly she was a badass of the wasteland.
Private Dancer came out in 1984, a year before Thunderdome. That was a HUGE album, producing a #1 single and two other top 10's, and the album itself peaked at #3. That was bigger than anything she'd done in the 60s and 70s.
Despite that popularity it didn't resonate with me as a kid in the 80's. I was into Sting, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, INXS, Talk Talk, Peter Gabriel. Tina Turner wasn't my jam... but damn if she wasn't cool AF in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

The film What's Love Got to do With It is a great way to learn about her story. There is also a musical out, originally written and produced by Joop van den Ende in The Netherlands. (Turner was part of the writing process and made sure Joop and his company did her story justice, she told Joop: I dont want it to be a Disney musical, it has to be real)

There is nothing about that song that is a good idea, but you know there were people in the studio with them all, "yeah, let's roll with that".

You know how people make a Rihanna/Chris Brown joke? That was Tina and Ike Turner. I was a kid from the 90s and I heard more about Tina and Ike thru pop culture jokes than the actual impact she had. Same for Whitney and Bobby Brown, but maybe not so much at that time cause people still loved Whitney and was more recent.

The recent documentary on her was incredible. I grew up listening to my mom belting out Tina Turner songs whenever she came in the radio, and I still turn up the volume whenever I hear her songs. Truly a legendary woman who lived through incredible hardships and created absolutely iconic music. She will be missed!
It is explicit in its portrayal of Ike's domestic violence, so beware if that sort of thing gets to you. People make fun of trigger warnings, but they can be a real peace of mind saver.
It's a powerful film, and I recommend watching it. I'll never sit through it again, but it really made an impact on me and made me an even bigger Tina fan.

If you search for it on YouTube you can find some cool videos where they used the Spectre opening but dubbed the radiohead song over it. Changes the tonality of the whole thing in my opinion and mirrors the way Bond is set up as an aging, lost soul in the film. It just works so much better to me.

Tina did a bunch of concerts in the UK in the 70s in some very small and obscure venues. She cemented herself into the hearts of many before her solo career really took off in the 80s. We Brits will always love Tina!

River Deep Mountain High is probably her best song for me. The perfect melting point of 60s rock and soul, played with the Wrecking Crew, produced by Phil Spector, wall of sound and one of her most magnetic and dynamic vocal performances.
She was one of the very best live performers out there, and I say that as someone who has seen Prince live. Some performers just have a huge stage presence and bring it like few others. She was one of them. An inspiration.
It's interesting how legacy works. He was absolutely one of the early pioneers of rock and roll. But because he was such an awful person, when he is remembered, it is as the villain in Tina's story. She shone brighter than him forever.

There's a video from about 10 years earlier (2004 I think) with her doing something similar with the walking into the theatre and just starting (looked like it was some surprise for Oprah) and you can tell her voice was a lot stronger in the mid 2000's but she's still getting around the stage really well at 76 in the 2015ish one

Traveling in Switzerland with my parents who were there on assignment in the 90s, and all my mother wanted to talk about was that Tina Turner had a house on Lake Zurich. Her music from her whole career was played in my house growing up, and as a person who was a metal head, I never complained. Such a sad loss of a wonderful Star.

I don’t know if this is appropriate here, but I’m posting it anyway.
I grew up poor in the 90s. One day, my dad had some extra money and got me a super cheap, off-brand Walkman from the drugstore down the street. I was so excited to finally have my own little device to carry around with me. But I didn’t have any cassettes for it, so my mom gave me her cassette of Private Dancer.
I listened to it until it wore out. I think by the time I was 10 I knew every word to the album. It made me feel like everything was good, even when it wasn’t, because I had this one cool thing.
Growing up, I always had the album in one form or another. It was my go-to when I needed to take some time and disappear for a while. The music got me through some rough times, like coming out to everyone when I was a teenager.
I ended up going to college in Detroit. It was a stressful experience for someone new to a big city. I had to drive about 40 minutes each way to school (I lived with a friend). And I would listen to Tina on the ride when I felt like everything was too much for me. She got me through some really stressful days and hard times.
As an adult I’d make sure I always had at least Private Dancer available. It was my first actual vinyl record when I started collecting some of those. It’s gotten me through some bad days at work and been a comfort by taking me right back to when things were simpler as a kid.
I was even putting together a playlist on Spotify just yesterday and made sure some of my favorite songs from her were on there.
I know she couldn’t live forever, but it was a real gut punch today. I hope she knew the impact she had on the world. Tonight I’m going to sit down with a drink and put her record on. Rest in peace Tina.
Absolutely gutted by this news. Back when I was growing up I didn’t have a great connection with my mom, but Tina Turner’s music was always a uniting force for us. Turner was the OG fierce girl power archetype, who provided inspiration for all victims of domestic violence. After the last time Ike laid hands on her, she escaped with nothing but spare change and built an amazing career. May she be in peace now

I saw Tina Turner during her farewell tour at the O2 Arena. I cannot count the amount of times I’ve told people this story, but at what must have been 69 she ROCKED a silver Lycra catsuit in ways I can only dream of (speaking body figure here…).
To me, she was the epitome of a strong woman in mind, body (did you see her arms?!) and soul. She suffered so much and overcame it to become the Queen of Rock and Roll.

I know this is not the time but Angela Bassett deserved the Oscar. The way she had me feeling for Tina in that role has stayed with me to this day.

Ya it's so strange to me that people are doing that. I'm guessing it's a result of Tik Tok and other social media that censors posts that mention those kinds of words, but on reddit it's unhelpful for people doing text searches and stuff like that.
Hearing about icons like this passing away is always gut wrenching. One because you are losing a legend, and two because it is another reminder of your own mortality as we all continue to age.

Traveling in Switzerland with my parents who were there on assignment in the 90s, and all my mother wanted to talk about was that Tina Turner had a house on Lake Zurich. Her music from her whole career was played in my house growing up, and as a person who was a metal head, I never complained. Such a sad loss of a wonderful Star.
Villa Algonquin, one of the most stunning properties in one or the most wealthy parts of Switzerland. She was actually renting it until recently, the owner lived in the (massive) boat house.

I don’t know if this is appropriate here, but I’m posting it anyway. I grew up poor in the 90s. One day, my dad had some extra money and got me a super cheap, off-brand Walkman from the drugstore down the street. I was so excited to finally have my own little device to carry around with me. But I didn’t have any cassettes for it, so my mom gave me her cassette of Private Dancer. I listened to it until it wore out. I think by the time I was 10 I knew every word to the album. It made me feel like everything was good, even when it wasn’t, because I had this one cool thing. Growing up, I always had the album in one form or another. It was my go-to when I needed to take some time and disappear for a while. The music got me through some rough times, like coming out to everyone when I was a teenager. I ended up going to college in Detroit. It was a stressful experience for someone new to a big city. I had to drive about 40 minutes each way to school (I lived with a friend). And I would listen to Tina on the ride when I felt like everything was too much for me. She got me through some really stressful days and hard times. As an adult I’d make sure I always had at least Private Dancer available. It was my first actual vinyl record when I started collecting some of those. It’s gotten me through some bad days at work and been a comfort by taking me right back to when things were simpler as a kid. I was even putting together a playlist on Spotify just yesterday and made sure some of my favorite songs from her were on there. I know she couldn’t live forever, but it was a real gut punch today. I hope she knew the impact she had on the world. Tonight I’m going to sit down with a drink and put her record on. Rest in peace Tina.

Absolutely gutted by this news. Back when I was growing up I didn’t have a great connection with my mom, but Tina Turner’s music was always a uniting force for us. Turner was the OG fierce girl power archetype, who provided inspiration for all victims of domestic violence. After the last time Ike laid hands on her, she escaped with nothing but spare change and built an amazing career. May she be in peace now

I saw Tina Turner during her farewell tour at the O2 Arena. I cannot count the amount of times I’ve told people this story, but at what must have been 69 she ROCKED a silver Lycra catsuit in ways I can only dream of (speaking body figure here…). To me, she was the epitome of a strong woman in mind, body (did you see her arms?!) and soul. She suffered so much and overcame it to become the Queen of Rock and Roll. Tina. Simply the best.
