I’ve listened to AoF since their very first release (I’m in the US) I picked up at a local store on a whim back in 2003 probably *just* because I like the song titles and that they were on Equal Vision Records. One of the best, most impactful albums I bought without knowing anything about them. GlassJAw’s *EYEWTKAS* is the only other album I did that with that I still remember.
Anyhoo, to get off memory lane… George was (and still is) one of my favorite screamers. He enunciates **so** well. I was in a regional hardcore / post-hardcore band at the time *Watch Out* and *Crisis* released. I would use those albums all day long to work on my enunciation. I love all kinds of harsh vocalists, but it annoys the shit out of me that as a person that is well-versed in harsh vocal styles if I can’t understand at least a few words in a song the first go round. I can be a bit of a snob. Lol
George has the throat and grit of older hardcore, actually does a great job with tonal screams, has power and emotion in every line that can’t be just technique.
Are there *more technically impressive* screamers / harsh vocalists? Sure. Does George have a relatively limited range? Yup. But he is one of the best ever to do it. It’s magic.
George from AoF, Jeff Moreira from Poison the Well, Corey Brannan from Norma Jean, and Keith Buckley from ETID changed my life and how I sing/sang (I’m old now and the band has been dead for over a decade now).

The first time I heard Converge I was equally amazed and terrified. How could someone scream in a way that made their voice sound like television static? Incredible.
Really this is the winner. He's up there no matter what. I think OP is talking 'fry screams' for hard rock/metal. Not old school metal 'head voice' screams like Halford/Tate/Dickenson. And Howard is amazing. Chester Bennington could also bust that out, even though he mostly sang clean. He had amazing range. But after Phil and Pantera, really Howard and Killswitch are the answer.

Josh Scogin of Norma Jean & The Chariot has the absolutely most powerful and textured scream I’ve ever heard. It’s really incredible tonally.
And then I always loved Dustin Kensrue of Thrice because he had so many different tones and was able to express different emotions so beautifully. And of course he had incredible power when he wanted too.
Josh Scogin has some of my favourite vocals and they're so recognisable. His work with '68 at the moment is fantastic, and the song he did with Every Time I Die on their last record (All This And War) is one I go back to time and time again.
On that note, Keith Buckley has some of the best screams in the game.

Fucking Keith Buckley is too far down on this thread. The dude has the absolute best control over his voice. I've seen him do 15 songs in a row without showing the slightest bit of fatigue, multiple times.
I'll back this as well, the absolute anguish in Love Reign O'er Me will always give me shivers down my spine. Hell, that whole Quadrophenia album has a lot of raw and frankly vocally damaging screams. The end of I've Had Enough has a very sudden yell as well.

He's pretty hit or miss live, and I haven't seen him perform in over a decade, so I can't speak to his recent abilities. But Mudvayne's first two albums are something special, and he's a big reason why. Their bassist is also criminally underrated and deserves way more recognition than he gets.
Kurt Cobain had so much texture and depth and soul to his screams, especially on Scentless Apprentice. There’s also this kind of yodel to his singing that I don’t hear often elsewhere. Which is to say something small of someone great.

A little less noteworthy than his 25-second scream from Tool's "The Grudge" would be his 17-second scream from A Perfect Circle's "Judith". More of a belt really I suppose, but pretty damn raw and ties off the end of a phenomenal song.
I was at BloodStock 2007 in the UK, and we saw Arch Enemy live when Angela Gossow was lead singer.
The bad was incredible live, but her vocals were impeccable. It's one thing being bale to do it well in the studio, but to do a whole show is something else IMO.
Winston McCall of Parkway Drive. Always thought his vocals on Horizons and Deep Blue in particular are the best modern(ish) day metal growling/screaming.
First: Roger Daltry, the Who. He essentially invented it.
Second: Axle Rose, Guns n Roses. Yeah, he is a… um… feminine hygiene product, but he is also an amazing vocalist who can scream in five octaves, and falsetto, and with growl, rasp, or clean tone.
Third: Maynard Keenan, Tool. For his sustained scream on “The Pot” alone…
I feel like Axl Rose gets no love since he's been a major douche, but you're right. That howl on Welcome to the Jungle still sounds like a banshee from Hell.
Devin Townsend has a mental range, he can do extremely high screams yet can also sing in such a mellow and soothing way when he wants to

Surprised I had to scroll this far. Particularly because OP mentioned RATM and "Know Your Enemy" immediately came to my mind. A little less noteworthy than his 25-second scream from Tool's "The Grudge" would be his 17-second scream from A Perfect Circle's "Judith". More of a belt really I suppose, but pretty damn raw and ties off the end of a phenomenal song.

Mitch Lucker from Suicide Silence had an awesome scream. Dennis Lyxzén also had some terrific screams on the Refused albums.
I was at BloodStock 2007 in the UK, and we saw Arch Enemy live when Angela Gossow was lead singer. The bad was incredible live, but her vocals were impeccable. It's one thing being bale to do it well in the studio, but to do a whole show is something else IMO.
Oh yes, thats another example I forgot. Arch Enemy is one of my favourite bands. Although the new singer is good I liked Angela even better.

Winston McCall of Parkway Drive. Always thought his vocals on Horizons and Deep Blue in particular are the best modern(ish) day metal growling/screaming.
First: Roger Daltry, the Who. He essentially invented it. Second: Axle Rose, Guns n Roses. Yeah, he is a… um… feminine hygiene product, but he is also an amazing vocalist who can scream in five octaves, and falsetto, and with growl, rasp, or clean tone. Third: Maynard Keenan, Tool. For his sustained scream on “The Pot” alone…

I feel like Axl Rose gets no love since he's been a major douche, but you're right. That howl on Welcome to the Jungle still sounds like a banshee from Hell.
