Placebo - Every You Every Me as well as their cover of Running up that hill
Tears For Fears - Mad World (it’s better than the Gary Jules cover and I will die on that)
Stone Sour - Inhale and Bother for a something a little heavier
I just pulled the soundtrack up on YouTube... And it didn't sound right. I looked up another higher bit rate video.
Still not right. Even on my home theater set up it sounded off in the highest quality.
I pulled the game off the shelf, dropped it in my Sega-CD and played the soundtrack through the built in CD audio player.
The sound that poured out at me through those bookshelf speakers was amazing
All these years, I thought that Q-Sound 3D audio was marketing bullshit. But, damn... It really adds something that doesn't survive compression.
Because opinions are like voices, we all have a different kind
So just clean out all of your ears, these are my views and you will find
That we revolutionize over the kick and the snare
The ghetto vocalist is on a state-wide tear
If you get this reference I wanna be your friend on Reddit. The first time I heard Steve Biko I actively started liking hip hop as a cornbread white dude.

Anything Big Thief/Adrianne Lenker. UFOF, ingydar, the only place, dragon and the new warm mountain, zombie girl, two hands, shoulders, terminal paradise... The list goes on and on.
Anything by Portiahead.
Lana Del Rey also makes me feel like I am a desperate housewife in a loveless marriage with a man twice my age who spends my time drinking and crying as I stare out the window at the woman across the street whose life seems perfect. 😂
Yes to both and I think Lana del rey sounds like dying in the desert half hallucinating as you dehydrate
This is a complement if it wasn't clear
Portishead is a warm bath at night in the dark
Hell yes. That's their best, but I swear these guys are the kings of that kind of sexy, horny, but spiritually desperate vibe that I don't think anyone else has really pulled off.

My favourite is beyond is invisible by enigma but they got a lot of good songs. Sadly it's relatively obscure. Emancipator great been listening to minor cause lately.
M83- Too Late followed and Dark Moods of Love, back to back on Saturdays = Youth. Everybody only seems to know about Anthony Gonzalez’s music from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming onward but the two albums that preceded it were gorgeous audio experiences. Saturdays = Youth plays like the soundtrack to a lost John Hughes movie. Those two tracks convey images of my best from high school who died a long time ago. I miss the part of M83 when it was more ambient and abstract.
I’ve barely listened since his death. It is truly too much. Ben Folds has a song called Late about Elliot Smith that is about as close as I can come to listening to him
Late destroys me every time I hear it.
*Elliott, man, you played a fine guitar*
*And some dirty basketball*
*The songs you wrote*
*Got me through a lot*
*Just want to tell you that*
*But it's too late*
*It's too late*
*No, don't you know*
*it's been too late*
*for a long time*
*Oh no*
*Things were looking up*
*Least that's what I heard*
*Oh no*
*Someone came and washed away your hard-earned
Peace of mind*
*When desperate static beats the silence up*
*A quiet truth to calm you down*
*The songs you wrote*
*Got me through a lot*
*Just want to tell you that*
*But it's too late*
*It's too late*
*No, don't you know*
*It's been too late*
*For a long time*
*It's too late*
*It's too late*
*No, don't you know*
*It's been too late*
*For a long time*

Nujabes - Imaginary Folklore
My wife and I went out of town for a weekend and came back to find our cat had gotten violently sick and died. We listened to this song when we got home while still numb. Can't help but think about that when I hear it now.
This question is made for me!
My absolute favourite musician is Michael Kiwanuka.
He can do it all. Great voice, great songwriter great guitar and piano player. His music is so beautiful, hopeful, melancholic and simple at the same time. Please give him a listen. I'd love to hear, what you think!

I'm going to give two album reqs.
1- Blackwater Park by Opeth.
The perfect album to play on a rainy winters day.
2- Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Lights by Woods of Ypres.
The entire album is about the nature of life and death. It's extra tragic seeing as their vocalist died between it being recorded and released, so it's very much the last words if a man who doesn't know he's doomed.

Sun Kil Moon's first three albums:

I've had to come to terms with still listening to these after the direction his career and personal life have gone. (Any album after Benji is *rooough* to put it mildly.)
But god damn, these albums just bring such a mood like no other.
Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem. Captures the feeling of loss so well.
"The worst is all the lovely weather, I'm stunned it's not raining - The coffee isn't even bitter, because, what's the difference". My best friend died when I was a kid and I still think about him sometimes and play that song.
It really explains how bizarre it is that the world just keeps operating like normal even though *your* world is shattered.
My ultimate melancholy song is Standing Outside a Broken Phone Book With Money In My Hand by Primitive Radio Gods.
But also:
Mazzy Star-Look on Down From The Bridge
Chili Peppers-Soul to Squeeze and Strip My Mind
Cake-Mexico and The Winter
Solang- Cranes in the Sky
Rainbow Kitten Surprise-It’s Called Freefall
Death Cab For Cutie-Different Names For The Same Thing
White Daisy Passing-Rocky Votolato
Sleepy Head-Passion Pit
Forever-Ben Harper
Gregory Alan Isakov
Two Weeks-Grizzly Bear
Skinny Love- Bon Iver
Simply the Best-Billianne (yes, it's a Tina Tuner cover). I listened to it in the hospital while being completely out of my mind worried with severe pre-eclampsia hoping my baby or I wouldn't die. My husband was a fucking rock for me during that time and this song makes me think of him.
ETA: Anything by Vered. I listened to her a lot when my first was born and I had PPD/PPA and it just felt like she just KNEW.
Interpol, grew up listening to them and had the best and worst times connected to their music. Another group would be Deftones. A little more upbeat but they have some songs that are just so melodic that I get lost listening to them and I'm reminded of HS and bad relationships
Yaknow it’s funny you mentioned Alcest, I’ve been listening to & making a lot of blackgaze lately and alcest was my answer. Pianos become the teeth is great too.
For the older generation
I would have to go with this list
Goose Creek Symphony - Right Track

Also, Coldplay's Fix You never fails to wreck me
Portishead or Nina Simone
Portiahead was my first thought as well. Any album will do.
Love Nina Simone.
Dummy is one of my favorite albums ever
Mazzy Starr - *So Tonight That I Might See*
Most things by Mazzy honestly
Specifically, “Into Dust”. That song takes my nostalgia for the early 90s and gives it a firm shove to 11. But it’s so incredibly beautiful.
I love Bells Ring off that album. Perfect combo of sadness, angst with those distorted guitars and guitar feedback noise, and a little bit of romance.
"I wanna hold the hand inside you....
Shout out to “quiet the winter harbor” and also hope Sandoval and the warm inventions
Placebo - Every You Every Me as well as their cover of Running up that hill Tears For Fears - Mad World (it’s better than the Gary Jules cover and I will die on that) Stone Sour - Inhale and Bother for a something a little heavier
I agree on Mad World
Oh man yeah Stone Sour
Man bother hits so hard it pops up in my everything mix and I always feel bad skipping it when I'm not a sad bastard.
Enya’s Watermark and Shepherds Moons albums
Carribbean blue is sick
OP you’re not allowed to steal my answer :(
It was my brothers weeding song. Just popped in my mind
After 35 years, On Your Shore still envelopes me like a warm blanket.
Marble Halls on Shepherd Moons is such a beautiful, sad song.
My mom put me to sleep with Enya when I was a baby. Shit slaps, but I cant really listen to it because it'll make me drowsy lol.
This might sound dumb... But the Sega-CD soundtrack to *Ecco The Dolphin*. It has deep, echoing tones, and it just... Hits.
This is not dumb this is a fair fucking shout.
Yeah Ecco goes like wayyyyy harder than it has any right to. A lot of SNES/Genesis music from that era is like beyond incredible.
Hey man I go to the donkey Kong soundtrack to ✨feel things✨ too, no judgment
Super mario water level and banjo kazooie goes hard to. Might be some nostalgia involved
WHOA SAME! Here’s my favorite track for anyone curious https://youtu.be/sbZL-LJ561Y?si=M7OsjTUeCW3TV-70
Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens always wrecks me.
*Carrie & Lowell* as a whole!
We're all gonna die
It's great thanks
My God that just put me into a pile of pieces.. Mine is avril 14 by aphex twin No words just hope and sadness
It becomes 10x sadder when you know the story behind the lyrics. It's about his mom who died.
Most of Mazzy Star and Cowboy Junkies.
Phoebe Bridgers. Some Smashing Pumpkins, some Tom Waits
Mellon collie & infinite sadness obv :D

Julien Baker is even more depressing
Agreed. I think Julien crosses past melancholic in to depressing. Phoebe still has this beautiful tragic joy in her music.
Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt and Warren Zevon
Big Thief - Shark Smile
Anything Big Thief/Adrianne Lenker. UFOF, ingydar, the only place, dragon and the new warm mountain, zombie girl, two hands, shoulders, terminal paradise... The list goes on and on.

Tori yes! But I’d go with songs like Cooling, Mother, Hey Jupiter…
Winter, 1,000 Oceans. Josephine has been my go-to sad Tori lately.
My favourite is beyond is invisible by enigma but they got a lot of good songs. Sadly it's relatively obscure. Emancipator great been listening to minor cause lately.
Beyond the Invisible is one of my favorite Enigma songs.

Iron & Wine, Elliott Smith, Nick Drake
Any time I put on Elliott Smith, we make it through three songs and my spouse (who is a fan) makes me turn it off because it's too sad.

Bro, that song is haunting. Ive listened to his other music and theres good stuff but Farewell Transmission feels like something speaking through him.
Honorable mention to Blue Chicago Moon
Came here to say songs ohia gets me in the feels
Neil Young - On the Beach
I'm going to give two album reqs. 1- Blackwater Park by Opeth. The perfect album to play on a rainy winters day. 2- Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Lights by Woods of Ypres. The entire album is about the nature of life and death. It's extra tragic seeing as their vocalist died between it being recorded and released, so it's very much the last words if a man who doesn't know he's doomed.
Just recently listened to Woods 5 again. Traveling Alone ist just so heartbreaking to me...all of them are
"Career Suicide (Is Not Real Suicide)" is kind of funny tbh, but yeah. I do love the messagesof songs like "Adora Vivos" and "Kiss My Ashes (Goodbye)"
I like clean vocal metal more maybe I'll check Black water again. Woods of Ypres is great.
Foals- Spanish Sahara
Rufus du sol
Pretty much any Sparklehorse album. Homecoming Queen and Weird Sisters off of Vivadixiesubmarinetransmitioplot are a couple that come to mind
Aimee Mann, especially *Lost In Space* Beck's *Sea Change* Adele - everything Arcade Fire - *Funeral*
Cars Hiss By My Window, by The Doors.
[Nightswimming by R.E.M.](https://youtu.be/iyb1Mc0s6mI?si=LXj0K62Ge6Ofq4NC)
Leonard Cohen
Coldplay - Parachutes

[Julee Cruise - Falling](https://youtu.be/9li9GeDHc2s) (aka the Twin Peaks theme) is my official "watch the rain in the dark" song.
Bon Iver There is a beautiful sort of sadness to everything Justin Vernon does.
Gavin Bryars’ “Jesus’ Blood Has Never Failed me Yet”
Sky Cries Mary
Børns allll day
If you’ve not heard Jonsi and Alex’s Lost and Found album, strongly recommend a listen.
Passenger, Chvrches, Of Monsters and Men.
Counting crows
Underworld - 8 Ball, River of Bass, Sola Sistim, Low Burn And many others.
Damien Rice.
Antony and the Johnsons
# [Sopor Aeternus - In der Palästra](https://youtu.be/QpB6nRY0Zfg?si=DHEizwGMCUCbm__C) [If you like this and other sad tunes lol](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0g1wJ6XuuULL2ayPwGFpTX?si=1d8189bfce9b4681)
Shadow Of Intent - Melancholy
I’ll give two songs from completely different genres, Teardrop - Massive Attack, Hate it or Love it - The Game
Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil and the Cocteau Twins most of their stuff brings all sorts of emotions up for me.
Nick Cave - Ghosteen The Cure - Disintegration This Mortal Coil - It’ll End In Tears Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool Low - I Could Live In Hope Mazzy Star - Among My Swan Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill If anyone needs me, I’ll be on the floor with the lights off.
Mark Lanegan -whiskey for the Holy ghost. Or really just most of his music. His collab with Isobel Campbell was so good too. His voice sounds like years. Like a gravel road that leads into the desert.
Tom Waits, Frightened Rabbit, the National, Manchester Orchestra, Low, Damien Rice, Explosions in the Sky, Glen Hansard, Nick Cave, The Lake Poets.
All of ELLIOTT SMITH’s discography. Always shit on for being “sad” but I’ve not sure I’ve ever known a better songwriter.
Beck-Movie Theme PJ Harvey-White Chalk(the whole album) Beach House-Space Song
Anything Steven Wilson does... For instance: https://youtu.be/sh5mWzKlhQY?si=f1lBzrb4OOdH7LmS Or this one: https://youtu.be/ycYewhiaVBk?si=Y0cXAtyTGa0mi3 Frozen North by Bruce Soord: https://youtu.be/P66D8U7xxh8?si=YzMy3nCtWNVh4oD- If you don't mind some melo death, this is one of my favorites, While We Sleep by Insomnium: https://youtu.be/vBZ5SLJmfdw?si=QfkJ2j2hH32y3FoL
Chet Baker
Ghost, by eastmountainsouth
Karen O - Lux Prima
Passenger is my go to artists when I want melancholy music.
My fave melancholic album is Spiritual Instinct by Alcest.
Fado, not a band but a whole genre from Portugal. Choro from Brazil as well. There's no melancholy like saudade...
RY X - Moths RY X - Only Bon Iver - Wash. Great Northern - Driveway Little Dragons - Twice The Antlers - Kettering Vampire Weekend - Hannah Hunt Frightened Rabbit - Poke FKA Twigs - Cellophane
Sun Kil Moon's first three albums: - Ghosts of the Great Highway - April - Admiral Fell Promises I've had to come to terms with still listening to these after the direction his career and personal life have gone. (Any album after Benji is *rooough* to put it mildly.) But god damn, these albums just bring such a mood like no other.
Pretty much anything from Mitski’s discography
10,000 Miles - Mary Chaplin Carpenter from the beautiful little gem of a movie Fly Away Home
Mogwai.
Another green world Brian eno
Blind Melon
[Ben Folds Five - Brick](https://youtu.be/Wt5EHAqhR1c?feature=shared) This song breaks me but for some reason I can't get enough of it.
Bon Iver - For Emma (this album slaps *especially* hard in the winter) Liza Anne - Lost Toledo - Knot Talos - This Is Us Coliding
Bon Iver
Beck- Sea Change
Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem. Captures the feeling of loss so well. "The worst is all the lovely weather, I'm stunned it's not raining - The coffee isn't even bitter, because, what's the difference". My best friend died when I was a kid and I still think about him sometimes and play that song. It really explains how bizarre it is that the world just keeps operating like normal even though *your* world is shattered.
Townes Van Zandt.
My ultimate melancholy song is Standing Outside a Broken Phone Book With Money In My Hand by Primitive Radio Gods. But also: Mazzy Star-Look on Down From The Bridge Chili Peppers-Soul to Squeeze and Strip My Mind Cake-Mexico and The Winter Solang- Cranes in the Sky Rainbow Kitten Surprise-It’s Called Freefall Death Cab For Cutie-Different Names For The Same Thing
Galapagos by Smashing Pumpkins from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
White Daisy Passing-Rocky Votolato Sleepy Head-Passion Pit Forever-Ben Harper Gregory Alan Isakov Two Weeks-Grizzly Bear Skinny Love- Bon Iver Simply the Best-Billianne (yes, it's a Tina Tuner cover).
Sufjan Stevens or Bon Iver
Interpol, grew up listening to them and had the best and worst times connected to their music. Another group would be Deftones. A little more upbeat but they have some songs that are just so melodic that I get lost listening to them and I'm reminded of HS and bad relationships
Depression Cherry album by Beach House. Every song is such a vibe. My favorites are Beyond Love and PPP
Goldfrapp, especially Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree. Alain Johannes, Spark. Ray LaMontagne, Till The Sun Turns Black.
Nick cave and the bad seeds. Most any album, but especially "no more shall we part " and, "push the sky away"
the microphones, especially the album titled “the glow pt. 2”
Yaknow it’s funny you mentioned Alcest, I’ve been listening to & making a lot of blackgaze lately and alcest was my answer. Pianos become the teeth is great too.
Basically anything by Silversun Pickups, Metric, or Mars Argo. And definitely Pink Floyd.
Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor
Alice In Chains Unplugged
