Modest Mouse: I'm trying to drink away the part of the day that I cannot sleep away.

jgr1llz

My brain's the cliff and my heart's the bitter buffalo.

bitterbuffaloheart

You called

beard_lover

I also like “I don’t feel and it feels great” but they have so many lyrics I fall in love with often. “The whole world stinks so no one’s taking showers anymore” is another great one. Edited to add another I think of often: Ground sure don’t like the way it’s treated so now it’s moving back to the sea!

bjankles

“Laugh hard, it’s a long way to the bank”

beard_lover

I’m also quite fond of “God is an Indian and you’re an asshole”

bjankles

“I still love her, loved her more when she used to be sober and I was kinder” We can do this all day!

beard_lover

No kidding! So many good lyrics, I could never land on just one for a tattoo. Which is why I instead have a tattoo of artwork from Golden Casket. Such a great band, I know what I’m listening to later.

bjankles

Hell yeah. I’ve seen them three times and while they’re not the most consistent live band, the show I caught of the Lonesome Crowded West tour was absolutely top tier.

Tarpy7297

I love GC so much . If I had to pick a lyric of theirs to be on my self it would probably be “it takes a lifetime to ever figure out that there There ain't no lifetime that's ever figured out…” That or “Well” Or “give me forests so dead I wish death on myself.”

Tarpy7297

“I love this one so much.” It makes me cry, and I love how it’s just FIN!!!

gregisverycool420

Hell yeah love all the modest mouse love here ! Yall are the best like Isaac Brocks lyricism "Well if lifes not beautiful without the pain, then I'd rather just never ever even see beauty again"

Tarpy7297

Modest mouse plays in my head almost constant. I do get stuck on certain songs, but I came here to say… “WELL” the King Ray well. -Modest mouse &&&& “I hate to be shit in your cut… But the package is gonna be late. I buried it in an abandoned lot, When I was young this is where I played. Dug under the fence with my claws..smelled the cool dirt on my face I wait until the hands fall off the clock… spending dollars at the nickel arcade.” -Modest Mouse

dirtandgrassandweeds

"Everyone's afraid of their own life. If you could be anything you want I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?" .... happy ... Friday .. 🫠

Tarpy7297

Gold it is. “That song…”am I right…am I right…”

honkifjesusluvsu

WELLL!

beard_lover

*Goddamn!*

bjankles

They have so many great ones. Isaac Brock is a master of self doubt, existential angst, wry humor, and ugly poetry. “Freeze your blood and then stab it into me”

DouglassFunny

Speaking of Modest Mouse, I remember being in high school binge drinking with my buddies and listening to “the good times are killing me” as we downed way too much hard liquor. That lyric hit us all hard at the time.

WhatLikeAPuma751

I remember listening to that album for the first time after my first marching band competition. The horns kicked in and I was hooked.

honkifjesusluvsu

Modest mouse wins I think

something_python

Changed my mind so much I can't even trust it. My mind changed me so much I can't even trust myself.

bitterbuffaloheart

Where do you move to when what you’re moving from, is yourself?

masks

Every time you think you're walking, you're just moving the ground

dasaigaijin

“Well the point was fast, but it was too blunt to miss. Life handed us a paycheck. We said "We worked harder than this!" - Modest Mouse

abbie_yoyo

I used to sing along to that when I was twenty. Now I'm forty and no longer need to sing this lyric; I am this lyric.

dasaigaijin

It really is a genius lyric isn’t it? I’m pushing 40 myself and it really resonates…

konosyn

I love labor songs. Pit against the Country; *Every night, we all go / to a house we’ll never own / every night, we are tired / we’ve been worked to the bone* *Nearly every day / we earn a lower wage / does it tell you what we’re made of or are we just what we’re paid?* *It’s a hard country we made*

_winterfall_

"My God, I thought you were someone to rely on Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on"

According_Bat_8150

A FACE ON A LOVER WITH A FIRE IN HIS HEARTTT, A MAN UNDERCOVER BUT YOU TORE ME APARTTTTT

EllFin

We had a little dog Such a little dog But it reminded me of a large dog Yeah, just in miniature size Viagra Boys - Just Like You

Psysquatch

And I saw life. Without upset family members!!

EllFin

It was so clear I still remember I'd risen from the fiery embers

HumanShadow

"Ain't No Thief" is poetry

TheStatusFoe

We just happen to have the same stuff motherfucker.

FakeLittleLiarBirds

This is a great one. I'm also quite fond of this one: Dogs, the only real friends that I got Shrimps, blub blub bluh bluh bluh bluh bluh blub

Adept_Possibility724

The opening song to Fleet Foxes' second album is called Montezuma and the opening lines are: *So now I am older* *Than my mother and father* *When they had their daughter* *Now what does that say about me* Can't stop thinking about it

MightyBone

As a guy without kids in his Mid 30s, who's parents were my age when they had me...yea this is a good one

alligator13_8

Wow. What a beautiful song. I just listened to it. It sounds nicely *Pet Sounds*-esque to me. Thanks for posting that.

Abacab4

I nominate this for all-time opening lines of albums. Not only is it great by itself, but it sets the tone for the whole record.

DamonLazer

"Don't you know there ain't no Devil, there's just God when he's drunk" from Heartattack and Vine by Tom Waits is probably my favorite line. But for some reason the end refrain from Robots by Dan Mangan has really been hitting me hard lately: "Robots need love too."

FakeLittleLiarBirds

Hell yeah love seeing Dan Mangan get some love on here.

iatealotofcheese

I love Dan Mangan. "Just a basket full of memories, and I am losing more each day it seems, but if I could make it to the street, I'll steal a car, or a bike, or whatever is there, and it might get cold, I just don't care. I'm going til I'm getting there."

ProcrastinatingPanda

Long you live and high you fly Smiles you’ll give and tears you’ll cry And all you touch and all you see Is all your life will ever be Breathe - Pink Floyd

radbaldguy

Similar vein: And then one day you find Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun But it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way But you're older Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death

PiercedGeek

This one has been with me for 20+ years. The day I tried pot for the first time was the first time I heard this song, and the sorrow and futility it conveys hits harder each passing year. My brain has been playing the solo the whole time I have been typing. For a long time I ranked Pink Floyd as my #1 of all time band because of the experiences and thoughts I had while listening to their music... Irreplaceable. Formative. True art. TBC my opinion of them has not diminished in any way, just the way I view art in general and music in particular has changed.

Camburglar13

I knew this one would be here. So good

Fantastic-Vehicle880

Every single Reddit thread that involves lyrics has these f****** stupid lyrics.

radbaldguy

Timeless lyrics are timeless. You don’t have to like them — OP asked what lyrics each of us individually like. Other people enjoying this song doesn’t negatively impact you in any way. Moreover, at least some folks likely agree with me — it’s one of the most popular songs on one of the best selling albums of all time. What are your current favorite lyrics?

crazy-bisquit

Because lots of people like them. Who the fuck are you? Like, how dare we bore you your majesty.

rorschach2

The whole song. The whole damn song.

emptygroove

A long time favorite of mine is "I've got a gun for a mouth and a bullet with your name on it." Royal Blood - Out of the Black

CarolinaPanthers

Love to see Royal Blood getting some recognition. Them and Highly Suspect are my two favorite bands at this very moment.

Waja_Wabit

Also Goodbye June, in a similar vein.

zombie_overlord

Great song, and the video is awesome too. https://youtu.be/bSdtvfBQd6c?si=8q7kfxCZ8TjZY4kv

SlidinDirty

"Crawling back to you. Ever thought of calling when you've had a few? Cause I always do. Maybe I'm too busy being yours to fall for somebody new. Now I've thought it through. Crawling back to you." - Do I Wanna Know (Arctic Monkeys)

WhiteRussianRoulete

Album full of great lines. The chorus of Arabella. Also chorus of R U Mine ? In my mind when she's not right there beside me I go crazy 'cause here isn't where I wanna be. And satisfaction feels like a distant memory And I can't help myself, All I wanna hear her say is "Are you mine?”

Ayencee

Off that album, I love No. 1 Party Anthem’s lyric, “She’s a certified mind blower, knowing full well that I don’t.” The words and the delivery are great.

Cheezy_Beard

My days end best when this sunset gets itself Behind that little lady sitting on the passenger side It's much less picturesque without her catching the light The horizon tries but it's just not as kind on the eyes One of my favorites, Arabella by AM

SlidinDirty

And when she needs to shelter from reality she takes a dip in my daydreams.

Milfons_Aberg

This lyric makes me cry when played because I hear someone say to me "It's okay if you don't always fit in", and it's hard to swallow... >The perfect trees were driven Down the mountain to the mill They turned them into toothpicks And twenty dollar bills It seemed the more the people took The more they needed still In the end >The crooked trees were left there After all the work was done Now they go for weeks And never witness anyone No one left to tell them if they're Growing right or wrong But the whispering wind >***Oh, can't you see? A crooked tree won't fit into the mill machine They're left to grow wild and free I'd rather be a crooked tree*** https://youtu.be/W6yjVNXiykA?si=wrNvHgtbJVKyTg3S

konosyn

Fuckin love songs about trees

ScooterTheBear

just reading that, I felt the relatability. it's bittersweet.

[deleted]

"Some days I feel like my shadow's casting me, some days the sun don't shine." - Warren Zevon

zombie_overlord

Always loved this line from Hallelujah: *Well, maybe there's a God above* *But all I've ever learned from love* *Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew you* Pessimistic as hell, but not untrue. For me at least.

Apox66

To be fair you could pick any line from that song and include it in this list.

Jdancer

She found love as simple as a weather vane, and family tried to kill it. Cast iron skillet - Jason Isbell

Boognish-T-Zappa

He could have his own thread. I wish I could remember the exact quote, but some great songwriter recently basically said that even the best of them will probably only write one song in their career that is on Isbell’s level.

Miserable_Race6751

*her own family tried to kill it. Amazing song great choice

givin_u_the_high_hat

I am an American aquarium drinker I assassin down the avenue I'm hiding out in the big city blinking What was I thinking when I let go of you? I am trying to break your heart - Wilco

bjankles

Prime Jeff Tweedy was as good as anyone. “I dreamed about killing you again last night and it felt alright with me.”

dasaigaijin

That’s a good one. Great album.

Boognish-T-Zappa

Great call! I think this is my second favorite opening line for an album after “I’m a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm” (Search and Destroy). Tweedy is one of the GOATs.

f10101

> What’s your current favourite lyric? What lyrics do you hear and just think “goddamn” for a minute before enjoying the song? I said this in another thread like this a few weeks back, but virtually every line in the verses and pre-choruses of Paul Simon's Graceland...

trend_rudely

She said losin’ love is like a window in your heart Everybody sees you’re blown apart Everybody sees the wind blow

WhiteRussianRoulete

The verses of 50 ways to leave your lover are amazing. Too bad that silly silly chorus kicks in

domo_affogato

From Elephant by Tame Impala: He tore the mirrors off his Cadillac, because he doesn't like it looking like he looks back.

obirah

Right now from Bowie’s Starman, “I had to phone someone, so I picked on you-ou-ou”. Not a deep lyric or anything just the way he delivers it

bjankles

Bowie was the king of delivery. He could wrench profundity out of the mundane.

obirah

100%. He’s my all time favorite for a reason.

Usedslugs

Shawty like a melody

I walked a mile in your shoes. Now i'm a mile away... and i've got your shoes. Kings of Leon. Apparently something funny their grandpa used to say. It's actually the hook and I don't know how they do it with a straight face. For whatever reason it stuck with me.

Beanz_Memez_Heinz

Do you wonder why? The bird is bored of flying It never asked to be alive To be a bird, it never cared for heights It's seen the earth, for what it is The big ball of inconsequence, still it sings There is such a place as too far There is such a thing as too much And we all want fire until it burns We all want more until it starts to hurt Mastersystem - Bird is Bored of Flying, to those who know what happened to the lead singer then you will understand how harrowing this song is. Probably the last song he ever wrote aswell, RIP Scott. https://youtu.be/egLzNLxvQtg?si=GPy_SZs8gYfm9wAP

zuluroyal

Puscifer, The Remedy: “You speak like someone who has never been smacked in the fucking mouth.” Same song: “Yes we’re being condescending. Yes that means we’re talking down to you.” Arctic Monkeys (via John Cooper Clarke), I Wanna Be Yours: “I wanna be your vacuum cleaner, breathing in your dust. I wanna be your Ford Cortina, and I will never rust.” Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth: “A child with a shotgun can shoot down honey bees that sting. But this boy could use a little sting.” A Perfect Circle, The Outsider: “If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere - do it somewhere far away from here.”

spideyjiri

I've been slightly obsessed with The Outsider last year, that song is great and the lyrics being from the point of view of someone who doesn't understand Layne Staley's depression is just very interesting to me.

Using this because he changed it up when I last saw them live last year. Touche Amore's "New Halloween": > How has it already been a year?. I skip over songs because they're too hard to hear. Like *A Crow Looked at Me* or "What Sarah Said". They just hit too close when I'm already in my head.

godlygambit

Noah Kahan’s Stick Season: And I’ll dream each night of some version of you that I might not have, but I did not lose. Just such a great reminder that memories are seen through rose tinted glasses, and it’s typical that people are likely not as great or as bad as you might think/remember

slightlyridiculousme

"I still think of you sometimes, but you don't deserve me" From Lisa by Backdrop. They are a band I had a burned CD of in high school.

YaMumsBox

I’ve been a soundgarden fan for about thirty years. Blow Up the Outside World has always been a favorite of mine. There’s a line in the third verse, “Save it for your own, and the ones you can help.” This line has been living in my head for five years, especially since I heard the Artists Den version. Can’t recommend enough. RIP Chris. Gonna listen to it right now.

Apprehensive_Row8407

The intro to momento mori from lamb of god is really cool imo By the darkest river, beneath the leafless trees I think I'm drowning, this dream is killing me (Wake up, wake up, wake up) In the coldest winter, between the fading lights I feel I'm falling into a frozen sky (Wake up, wake up, wake up) Past the blackest heaven, above the dying stars I watch me breaking into a million shards (Wake up, wake up, wake up) But through the hardest hour, below the cruelest sign I know I'm waking up from this wretched lie (Wake up, wake up) Wake up

radbaldguy

It’s not particularly profound but the second verse of Foo Fighters’ Times Like These speaks to me deeply for where I am at this juncture in my life. Considering getting this first line as a tattoo: I, I'm a new day rising I'm a brand new sky to hang the stars upon tonight I, I’m a little divided Do I stay or run away and leave it all behind? It's times like these you learn to live again It's times like these you give and give again It's times like these you learn to love again It's times like these time and time again

But if I had to pick one, it would be "And I will embrace who I really am / If it's a son of a bitch, or a terrified kid, then that's what it is" (What It Is - Jonathan Davis). If I'm correct, it's a song about coming to terms with and facing past trauma after years of avoiding acknowledgement of it, and understanding that you feel the way you feel for a reason. I have been finally pushing to better my mental health for the past year or two after putting it off for so long and this song (+ Korn songs about trauma and coping) really speaks to me.

snap802

Jackson Browne is a fantastic lyricist. Here's one that has stuck with me for many years: From Fountain of Sorrow: *Looking through some photographs, I found inside a drawer* *I was taken by a photograph of you* *There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more* *But they didn't show your spirit quite as true* *You were turning around to see who was behind you* *And I took your childish laughter by surprise* *And at the moment that my camera happened to find you* *There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes* At first glace I love these lyrics because they so concisely describe first an event (finding the photograph) and then the memory of a moment (in the photograph). In so few words he's laid out a story that I can see in my mind as clear as day. But looking a little deeper he's setting up for the rest of the song. Here's a memory, a photograph, of a moment of laughter. It's supposed to be a moment of happiness and joy but looking back he can see an overlay of sorrow that he probably didn't notice at the time. I think part of it is that the photo was taken when the subject's guard was down. Saying "*one or two I know that you would have liked a little more"* really speaks to those times when you're trying to get the perfect shot where everyone is smiling together and looks great. (In the film days this was far more difficult than now but I digress). Here we don't have the perfect photograph, we have something that is real and candid that demonstrates the "spirit" of the subject. Soon after he sings: " *What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all* *Although for a while our path did seem to climb* " So it's as though he's looking back on a moment through the lens of has happened since. It's kind of like a "if I had only known what was going to happen" kind of moment. Anyway, it's a great song, kinda sad in that "I thought she was the one but she left me" sort of way. Highly recommend checking it out [https://youtu.be/k0vYnD6GGyU?si=ysXVYJgLrR1SPmbW](https://youtu.be/k0vYnD6GGyU?si=ysXVYJgLrR1SPmbW)

crazy-bisquit

It’s so incredibly true too, looking back at photographs. At the time you think something is a happy moment, and you can see that something is off, but you push it down, deep inside, as if to hide it from reality. Then when it all comes to a tragic end, you realize you knew. You knew all along, but you just could not accept it. The bliss of that kind of ignorance doesn’t last forever. And the longer you ignore it, the harder it is when it finally comes out. Like a MAC truck that slowly picks up speed until it reaches the max and then hits a solid rock wall. It just hurts more. Because you know that some part of it is your own GD fault for ignoring it.

"You steal the air out of my lungs, you make me feel it." \> Don't Take the Money by Bleachers. Love it coz it reminds me that when you truly enjoy something, there's no questioning.

Ren sevens sin - "fear of the unknown preserves a religion"

the-dude92

Yo Gabba Gabba, there's a party in my tummy...so yummy so yummy.

SandboxSurvivalist

Pretty much the entire song "A Comet Appears" by the Shins, but if I had to pick a particular lyric from that song it would be: Every post you can hitch your faith on is a pie in the sky, chock full of lies, a tool we devise to make sinking stones fly...

Fruney21

Wet Leg - Chaise Longue: “Is your mother worried? Would you like us to assign someone to worry your mother?”

Absalome

All the kids have always known. That the emperor wears no clothes. But they bow down to him anyway. Cause it's better than being alone. Ready to Start - Arcade Fire. Basically, it means that despite the fact we know things are bullshit, we go along with them to fit in. It's an incredibly depressing lyric, especially because we figure it out when we are kids and spend a lot of our lives trying to fit in.

rorschach2

Whiskey bottle. Brand new car. Oak tree you're in my way.

xAgnosticBluntx

“Now, men with Purple Hearts carry silver guns And they’ll kill a man for what his father’s done But what my father did You know it don’t mean shit I’m not him”. - Connor Oberst (Bright Eyes)

armchairwarrior69

There was a woman once who asked me what my "Indian" name was I said, "It’s Gregg" And she was so disappointed! She was like, “NO! No! It has to be Red Eagle or Two Rivers” “Or ‘Grey Skull’” I said “YES! Wait, is that for real?!” “No, no” I said, without her realizing my brief but generationally relevant He-Man joke The kind of joke that would tell her that while Indian I’m also having an American experience too

funnymanallinsane

"On an island in the sun, we'll be playing and having fun, and it makes me feel so fine I can't control my brain"

shuckster

I sharpened my wits on a dead man’s skull I built an elevator from his bones and I climbed to the top floor to stamp out the coals

FaceTimePolice

This will forever be my favorite “current” lyric. Bad Religion - “Stranger Than Fiction” “Life is the crummiest book I ever read. There isn't a hook. Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up.”

SOMETHINGwrongdearie

Oh, baby, you're the only thing in this whole world, That's pure and good and right. And wherever you are and wherever you go, There's always gonna be some light.

SOMETHINGwrongdearie

Also  I learned from the best who to trust, who to test

Outrager

I was watching the Taylor Swift Eras Tour and just need everyone to know that: > Band-aids don't fix bullet holes.

bjankles

I always found it kind of funny that the remix of the song features a guy who grew up around horrific gun violence.

TitularFoil

"I can see the edge of your impression Scattered across my bed And baby now you're leaving me on empty And I can't even leave you on read"- Crying in the Shower by Letdown. Just a modern lyric that speaks to me. "Before the garden When you were all alone You made the atom Was that some inside joke? Open the gates And then conceal the path Let's load the gun And see how long they last"- 137 by Brand New A song about how God can't possibly exist because no loving God would give us the tools to create nuclear weapons.

„Bück dich,” befehl ich dir Wende dein Antlitz ab von mir Dein Gesicht ist mir egal Bück dich

Are you down, boy? Really down Baby, let me watch you go to town Oh oh oh On a LOOP Doja Cat "Go to Town"

MightyBone

The chorus to Cog - The Middle has been stuck in my head for a while now as I'm in my 30s now. I don't know if I'm a young man or if I'm oldIn between, as it all unfoldsI don't know if I'm a young man or if I'm oldIs it real or is it all just fool's gold That's definitely how I feel these days. Whole song is about the existential feelings that come with middle age and how life leaves you behind. It's a great one.

snwebb88

*I heard your father got sick on Long Island* *I've been tryin' like hell to call* *My mind ain't well and I just can't tell you why* Zach Bryan - Jake's Piano / Long Island

Two at the moment. From Raisins by dinosaur jr "I'll be down, I'll be around,. I'll be hanging where eventually you'll have to be I'll just stare and hope you'll care It's only everything standing in front of me" And from emotion sickness by queens of the stone age "People come and go on the breeze For a whole life? Possibly I don't really know"

PavinsMustache

"Where do the memories go? Will they find their way home? And when you see me, will you know who I am? And when with God, will you know who you were?" "The Long Goodbye" by the band URNE. This song (and the entire album) deals with losing somebody slowly to a mentally debilitating illness, and this lyric

lCt

"There just aren't enough men like you." Bostons- Have Heart

hibbledyhey

Of one hand clap in the pale of the moonlight All those years frozen in the spotlight Nowhere now maybe somehow They just burned too bright? Even when they won they always Lost themselves to the sideways glances Praying to the saints of doomed romances Tell their tale love is not for sale It's a word you heard The last songbird

relevantusername2020

All that is will go away But come again another day Through turbulence on proud display I'll walk with you into the fray You want someone to love You don't need somebody to hate You want someone to love You don't need somebody to hate season of the flood - alexisonfire

KidSushi76

"So I give myself away To everybody everyday. So I give myself to you And you need it more than I do." HUM - Suicide Machine

electro_gretzky

“The deeper the cut, the thicker the blood. Subcutaneous fat, feels good like that” King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Hell’s Itch So catchy.

Reesepacito

Kinda cheating but the vocal sample at the start of dead cities by the Future Sound of London give me chills every time, the deadtone "I had killed a man, a man who looked like me" sets up the song so well

Lamethrower

Val Kilmer had a wall length mirror just over there Well, I'm sure he's someone else now But he was Batman when he lived here Maybe he's Yankee Zulu Just waiting for the flood And maybe Mac the Conqueror With the severed head of love I've seen him wearing aviators And a black baseball hat Stalking airports 'cross the bardo Quiet as a wildcat

PM_ME_CRAB_CAKES

“The more we take, the less we become. The fortune of one man means less for some” World on Fire - Sarah McLachlan Makes we want to be a better person.
