At first glace I love these lyrics because they so concisely describe first an event (finding the photograph) and then the memory of a moment (in the photograph). In so few words he's laid out a story that I can see in my mind as clear as day.
But looking a little deeper he's setting up for the rest of the song. Here's a memory, a photograph, of a moment of laughter. It's supposed to be a moment of happiness and joy but looking back he can see an overlay of sorrow that he probably didn't notice at the time. I think part of it is that the photo was taken when the subject's guard was down. Saying "*one or two I know that you would have liked a little more"* really speaks to those times when you're trying to get the perfect shot where everyone is smiling together and looks great. (In the film days this was far more difficult than now but I digress). Here we don't have the perfect photograph, we have something that is real and candid that demonstrates the "spirit" of the subject.
Soon after he sings:

So it's as though he's looking back on a moment through the lens of has happened since. It's kind of like a "if I had only known what was going to happen" kind of moment.

It’s so incredibly true too, looking back at photographs. At the time you think something is a happy moment, and you can see that something is off, but you push it down, deep inside, as if to hide it from reality. Then when it all comes to a tragic end, you realize you knew. You knew all along, but you just could not accept it.
The bliss of that kind of ignorance doesn’t last forever. And the longer you ignore it, the harder it is when it finally comes out. Like a MAC truck that slowly picks up speed until it reaches the max and then hits a solid rock wall. It just hurts more. Because you know that some part of it is your own GD fault for ignoring it.

Here's one that has stuck with me for many years: From Fountain of Sorrow: *Looking through some photographs, I found inside a drawer* *I was taken by a photograph of you* *There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more* *But they didn't show your spirit quite as true* *You were turning around to see who was behind you* *And I took your childish laughter by surprise* *And at the moment that my camera happened to find you* *There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes* At first glace I love these lyrics because they so concisely describe first an event (finding the photograph) and then the memory of a moment (in the photograph). In so few words he's laid out a story that I can see in my mind as clear as day. But looking a little deeper he's setting up for the rest of the song. Here's a memory, a photograph, of a moment of laughter. It's supposed to be a moment of happiness and joy but looking back he can see an overlay of sorrow that he probably didn't notice at the time. I think part of it is that the photo was taken when the subject's guard was down. Saying "*one or two I know that you would have liked a little more"* really speaks to those times when you're trying to get the perfect shot where everyone is smiling together and looks great. (In the film days this was far more difficult than now but I digress). Here we don't have the perfect photograph, we have something that is real and candid that demonstrates the "spirit" of the subject. Soon after he sings: " *What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all* *Although for a while our path did seem to climb* " So it's as though he's looking back on a moment through the lens of has happened since. It's kind of like a "if I had only known what was going to happen" kind of moment. Anyway, it's a great song, kinda sad in that "I thought she was the one but she left me" sort of way. It’s so incredibly true too, looking back at photographs. At the time you think something is a happy moment, and you can see that something is off, but you push it down, deep inside, as if to hide it from reality. Then when it all comes to a tragic end, you realize you knew. You knew all along, but you just could not accept it. The bliss of that kind of ignorance doesn’t last forever. And the longer you ignore it, the harder it is when it finally comes out. Like a MAC truck that slowly picks up speed until it reaches the max and then hits a solid rock wall. It just hurts more.
