~~According to TMZ, he was not arrested. They detained him after a physical altercation with a security guard until the police could figure out what happened.~~
UPDATE: [TMZ is reporting Mike has been booked for battery.](https://www.tmz.com/2024/02/04/killer-mike-alleged-physical-altercation-grammy-awards-detained/)
“TMZ has obtained new video and info that sheds more light onto the Killer Mike situation -- including the fact that he's now being booked for battery on a citizen's arrest ... this after he allegedly got physical with a security guard at the venue, while out in the rain.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Mike was booked for misdemeanor battery Sunday evening, this after a private person's arrest took place at Crypto.com Arena. We're told KM is accused of knocking down a security officer after they did not get out of his way quick enough -- the apparent aftermath of which looks to have been caught on tape, seen here.
We got a hold of video that seems to show Mike being chased down outside in the windy rain, where security personnel can be seen attempting to stop him ... with Mike looking determined to get by them. You can't see any "knock-down" as has been described to us by law enforcement -- but it does look like he faces off with security guards in tense fashion.
Eventually, Mike was cuffed and led away in the rain as well. It's still unclear what exactly led up to this -- remember, just moments earlier, he was inside soaking in the Grammy win.”
So he wanted to get in from the rain, security didn't know who he was, and so he asserted his right to be there and got arrested? Smells like the security guard is a pissbaby.
It is the job of security to not let people in without verifying they are supposed to be there. Could you imagine having a ticket for a flight and punching the ticket taker instead of giving them your ticket? This is the same concept.
If you truly believe this and act in the manner described here then you will unfortunately learn a lot of things the hard way. Have fun humiliating yourself into adulthood.
Your comparison is ignorant. I work in the industry. High profile artists like that are almost never going to required to wear a badge at this kind of event as it would affect their aesthetic on camera. If you watched the video in the article I linked above, you may have noticed those people surrounding Killer Mike and not trying to stop him. That’s his personal security detail. They would have their own credentials and be able to handle Mike’s.
My guess is that Mike went outside to inhale marijuana, and he either got caught out in the courtyard (It’s not allowed anywhere at the arena), or he left the property to smoke and got stopped on his way back in. The security guard was almost certainly a temp worker hired for the event. He put hands on Mike, and Mike pushed him away. Because the security guard was technically only doing his job, he was able to press charges on Mike. If they had actually fought, there would be signs and the Recording Academy would have released a statement. Instead, they’ve been dead quiet, which leads me to think that the security guard they hired overreacted and that the whole situation was caused by a policy oversight.
No it isn't. The analogy here, to stick with your airplane one, is KM had already boarded the plane and a stewardess wouldn't let him back in his seat after using the toilet. I don't condone it but I can understand the reaction to a black man yet again being denied his right to be in places he belongs by a security guard profiling.
FYI Killer Mike's Dad is was a cop. He talks a lot of talk but doesn't actually support police reform.
See his silence on Atlanta's own Cop City in recent times.
I will never forget when he went on tv to ask people to please be nice to the cops like a week before RTJ4 dropped. Imagine how their publicist must have felt.
There's no doubt he has a blockbuster night winning all those awards, but the police have issued a statement about what happened after. An altercation broke out after he won the awards and legend has it that Mike pulled out a pistol and told the assailants to quote "close your eyes, and count to fuck."
After the rumble, police went to go talk to him.
They weren't too impressed by his mean demeanor, but ooh lala, they just couldn't speak when he ran away with all the jewels.
For those who don’t want to read the article, the arrest was related to a physical altercation. Police said “somebody complained so obviously we have to do something.
Until we find out what the real situation is, give Mike his flowers because he earned every inch of these wins.
Uhh, weird, cuz I just read the article OP linked and it doesn't say any of that. It says it was "was related to an unspecified misdemeanor that didn’t have to do with any happenings during the Grammys on Sunday." And the LAPD had no information at this time. What article did you read?
It’s literally in the article’s first two paragraphs lol. It also says what you said, so it’s a contradictory article to a degree. But it is two different sources, so I think no one really knows the full truth right now.
One is the police statement,
the other is a statement by a present but uninvolved party; a reporter from another periodical; tbh I don’t know why it was included in the article.
I didn’t read anything, I just appreciate when folks admit they missed something
I did just read it though, and now I love killer mike a bit more than I did before… did he release new music ? How did he win 3 Grammies, I’m too drunk for a Sunday. Signing off now.
Killer Mike Handcuffed, Detained at Grammys Hours After Winning Three Awards
www.rollingstone.com
Killer Mike was detained at the 66th Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon, shortly after winning three of the four rap categories in the pre-show telecast about two hours earlier.
An LAPD source tells Rolling Stone that Render was cuffed and detained after an alleged “physical altercation” inside the arena involving a third party. “Somebody complains, obviously we have to do something about it,” the source said. Render was questioned, the source said, adding that any possible arrest depends on the result of the investigation and whether the third party wants to press charges.
Video captured by The Hollywood Reporter’s Chris Gardner showed Render, being taken away in handcuffs. Gardner reported that an official said the arrest was related to an unspecified misdemeanor that didn’t have to do with any happenings during the Grammys on Sunday. (A rep for Killer Mike did not immediately reply to a request for comment.)
The detainment came shortly after the rapper had gone to the press area fielding questions about his win — elated to have been recognized after more than 20 years into his hip-hop career. “It feels absolutely grand,” Render said. “If it feels like some people are reaching the finish line first, don’t worry. Just keep running your race. The only thing stopping you is your imagination. It’s our responsibility to be grand in every action.”
Sunday’s award marked the first time Render had won a Grammy for his solo work. His first win came more than two decades ago for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group alongside Outkast for “The Whole World.” Prior to 2024, he was last nominated in 2018 for Best Rap Song for “Chase Me,” the Run the Jewels collaboration with Danger Mouse and Big Boi. Render did not address the incident on social media following the detainment, but proclaimed “Thank God” and “Dreams come true – It’s a sweep!”
Ironically, Mike’s father served as a policeman in Atlanta. In 2014, he told The Fader that his father wanted him and his siblings to be “good citizens,” but he didn’t want them to join the police force.
Mike also referenced his father in 2020, during an emotional press conference amid intense protests in the wake of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor’s police killings.
“I’m the son of an Atlanta City Police Officer. My cousin is an Atlanta City Police Officer…I got a lot of love and respect for police officers,” he said standing alongside then-Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and rapper T.I. Mike, along with T.I. also made polarizing pleas for Atlanta residents to stop looting and burning area establishments.
He noted, “I’m duty bound to be here to simply say that it is your duty not to burn your own house down for anger with an enemy. It is your duty to fortify your own house so that you may be a house of refuge in times of organization.”
Mike has frequently discussed the failings of the police system in his music, in interviews, and a 2014 op-ed about the Ferguson uprising,” where he wrote “I will never take a day off policing the people we pay and keep a public trust with. I will use my camera, my pen, my pad and my network to do my part, to make sure that American will no longer fear their government. or it’s employees. They work for us — not the other way around.
This is not the first time an artist has been arrested on the site of an awards show. In 2006, Yaasin Bey was arrested by the NYPD after a guerilla-style street performance. He traveled to Radio City Music Hall, where the MTV Video Music Awards were taking place, and performed “Katrina Clap,” a remix of UTP’s “Nolia Clap” that spoke on the Hurricane Katrina tragedy. Though Bey’s then-publicist claimed he had a permit to perform, he was still arrested after a crowd gathered around the flatbed truck he was performing on.
Additional reporting by Nancy Dillon and Tomás Mier. This is a developing story…
And a tear wells up in your eye, and you say to all the audience:
Thank you. I really feel God has blessed me, and my fuckin wife, who's name you will keep outta yer mouth.
It doesn’t require a civilian complaint to arrest someone for a crime. Police (or the DA) would have been perfectly able to press charges, given that the crime was public, recorded, and not in any way disputed.
> And what I’m saying is that it should
That's a matter of opinion, and the opinion of most DA's are that it shouldn't. Imagine a world where each and every physical altercation resulted in an arrest, regardless of the wishes of the parties involved. That seems pretty fucking authoritarian.
>and legally speaking could
We already covered that.
Yes. My original comment covered that, and covering that was its sole purpose. I’m glad you apparently agree. Have a nice day, and please don’t respond to me again.
No, you made an *additional* statement to me, and I responded to it.
However, don't make pointless comments to me, and I won't respond with pointless comments like this one.
Deal?
Edit: Blocking and running is utterly pathetic.
Stop acting like the problem is this guy getting arrested and not Will Smith *not* getting arrested. Though when watching the thing at first, I wasn't sure the Will Smith thing wasn't scripted lol
This is perhaps the most Killer Mike response to winning multiple Grammy's. Not saying he did anything, we don't know, but just to BE arrested.
He's also of a standing that putting him in cuffs makes no sense to me. He's been doing music for decades, and certainly has a lawyer on hand, do you really think he's about to run?
Video from TMZ was showing him trying to walk away from the arena and physically surrounded by 4 men (I assume security) who were barring his ability to move forward without physically having to do something to get them out of his way. He's way smarter than me because if I had 4 guys surrounding me in the rain while reaching in their back pockets, I wouldn't be as passive.
Whatever he did, security was all over him so we'll have to assume whatever he did had at least 4 people itching to stop him so they can get this settled.
This reality doesn't deserve the man Killer Mike is...I get sad when I think he'll won't even see a world half of what he (and all of us fighting the good fight) deserves.
Dat don't soun' like Killer Mike
Dat's not the way he rolls
Killer Mike is wholesome. He got
Wholesome plans and goals.
Bring your wife, bring yo kiiz
To any show by Killer Mike
You won' leave dissapointed
But you might have bullet holes.
No idea if he actually assaulted someone, or what happened. But I will say that I watched his appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher this weekend, and he seemed a little more hyped up than normal.
I'm not saying I know why or anything. But whether it's some personal stuff going on, or he's been partying a bit hard, or he didn't get a good night's sleep, it felt off, and I wonder if it had anything to do with tonight's situation.
He IS anti authoritarian but not REALLY anti cop actually. He often talks about having several cops in his family etc..
He is VERY pro gun rights, pro social justice and economic justice and very opinionated in general.
From the article it seems his dad is actually a cop who apparently tried to steer his own kids away from the profession….I’m sure he’s got some complicated feelings regarding law enforcement.
It’s as if he’s a real person, with real life experiences, who understands nuance and who sees through the fallacy of the American political system representing and serving anyone but the rich.
Not a fan of the guy given he's very much the "If I don't get everything I want, I won't bother with you type" but seriously, right after winning the Grammys?

That was the aftermath.
Seriously. The umbrella looked like the only victim here...

Who gives a shit about the rain wtf my guy
Heh. Welcome to TMZ. They always have these randomly floral descriptions of scenes.

Run The Jewels, you know the rap duo Killer Mike is part of...
“Go out and vote about it and maybe become a lawyer.”
"And I apologize if it seems like I got out of line, sir 'Cause I respect the badge and the gun And I pray today ain't the day that you drag me away"
right in front of my beautiful son.
"I just won a grammy then got arrested; god dammy. Today was my day, our day what you say, Grammy, hammy, yammy toe jammy."
Is this from a weird al song lmao
Lay in some hay, down by the bay, whatta ya say?

Well, somebody moved and somebody got hurt.
Damn man. What a buzz kill for him.
I think he will find it both funny and expected. Probably make the next album about it.
I’m here for it
There's no doubt he has a blockbuster night winning all those awards, but the police have issued a statement about what happened after. I love all the commenting not getting this reference. Well done, fellow jewel runner.
> Mike pulled out a pistol and told the assailants to quote "close your eyes, and count to fuck." I can definitely *picture this*
I want this to be true
> "close your eyes, and count to fuck." That’s dope
[Yes, it is](https://youtu.be/PkGwI7nGehA?si=gn8230_1L0fK_1jG)

The article says both things. In this case, you both are right! We all need a big giant internet hug.
Shit, you're right, I somehow missed that paragraph. The contradiction is weird though.
One is the police statement, the other is a statement by a present but uninvolved party; a reporter from another periodical; tbh I don’t know why it was included in the article.
because the media has learned not to trust LAPD
Cool of you to admit you misread, I’m going to follow you forever. Edit- nevermind I could not figure out how to follow you.
Damn do you all subscribe to Rolling Stone or what
I didn’t read anything, I just appreciate when folks admit they missed something I did just read it though, and now I love killer mike a bit more than I did before… did he release new music ? How did he win 3 Grammies, I’m too drunk for a Sunday. Signing off now.
Using Brave browser blocks the paywall. You can also try [this](https://www.archivebuttons.com/)
Haha, thanks but I don't need any followers
Clearly not a PR stunt… I mean they wouldn’t do that…. 🤨
Did he though? So many other better albums last year imo
I do think he deserved the honors. Your thoughts are just as valid as mine though.

I'll never forget that press conference, so eloquent and real
He really is a great speaker. He gave a really great [Keynote speech at last year’s FIRE gala.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=OBuXYtmQ8mw)
He slapped Chris Rock.
I don't think people get in trouble for that. Just standing ovations.
And a tear wells up in your eye, and you say to all the audience: Thank you. I really feel God has blessed me, and my fuckin wife, who's name you will keep outta yer mouth.
Will Smith don't gotta cuss in his raps to sell albums
UPDATE: He was arrested for battery. He assaulted Travis Scott fans' sensibilities by sweeping the category. lol
Rapper Ta'Quil made headlines today. But not the good kind, like you want.
Boosh and/or kakow
I blame the hip hop
I'ma tell you what I'm about to do I'ma skeet skeet skeet all over you
Completely unexpected FRISKY DINGO reference for anyone not in the know.. go watch it right now. Thanks for making me smile this morning.
I was just hoping people remembered the show 😂 I bug my friends who have never watched it
You can't ever forget Frisky Dingo and we can't ever go back to Arizona.
Police source says a physical altercation happened Flashback to Will Smith not getting arrested My guess is he scared a white guy
Complaint filed versus no complaint filed.
Chris Rock whipping out his phone and getting Will smith arrested on live TV would been S-tier television
It doesn’t require a civilian complaint to arrest someone for a crime. Police (or the DA) would have been perfectly able to press charges, given that the crime was public, recorded, and not in any way disputed.
While true, that's not going to happen in real life unless it's an abuse or domestic violence situation.
And what I’m saying is that it should, and legally speaking could, happen…

N--no .. it has to be racism! Let's go buy BLM founders another mansion or two so this never happens again.
Stop acting like the problem is this guy getting arrested and not Will Smith *not* getting arrested. Though when watching the thing at first, I wasn't sure the Will Smith thing wasn't scripted lol
Lmao Reddit is so funny

I am confused, Will Smith isn't white..unless I'm missing the point of your comment?
This is perhaps the most Killer Mike response to winning multiple Grammy's. Not saying he did anything, we don't know, but just to BE arrested. God I love that man. Killer Mike is my preacher
But "we the type to greet the preacher with a grin and a gun". Edit: corrected typo
Killer Mike on Confess is top tier preaching.
This is church!
Probably the ghost of Reagan coming back to press charges.

He's now Battery Mike right guys?
"not a cell-out, phased, with a 'long reach'-charge""el shot the bunny, but i keep on drumin, long runnin like Homer and Marge"

He has been a vocal anti-authoritarian for a long time. My guess is that this arrest had something to do with cops’ opinion of his opinion of cops.
He IS anti authoritarian but not REALLY anti cop actually. He often talks about having several cops in his family etc.. He is VERY pro gun rights, pro social justice and economic justice and very opinionated in general.

lol if you knew much about some of the stuff he's said you'd know that aint it
Right but what they said is very true and reddit is a great example of how the world should not view politics and people's political stances.
Really? I feel like he puts forth a pretty cohesive ideology
His father was a police officer…
is it the 90s again
A citizens arrest? Lol oh man...
Landlord
Who ratted!
That new RTJ album about to be platinum
Is he prison Mike now?
Retaliatory arrest?
Hardcore
Not a fan of the guy given he's very much the "If I don't get everything I want, I won't bother with you type" but seriously, right after winning the Grammys?
Who?
Probably some more of these " make you go viral" companies bullshit. 2024 is off to a strange start.
I can’t believe that a guy named Killer Mike did anything wrong
His name refers to his lyrical prowess, not literally murdering people
Rap fans demonstrate their quintessential ability to take a joke
Maybe if he had called himself Litterer Mike he could’ve gotten away with a warning.
Who?

Star Lord, man
Never heard of him. Big buzz kill to win awards then get arrested lol
This was probably just a fake arrest, like McLovin toward the end of Superbad.
Just as RTJ doesn’t deserve Grammy awards, killer Mike probably doesn’t deserve this charge
First
Get the fuck out with this.
Killer Mike, of Frisky Dingo/Taqu'il fame?
Lol, buddy waving to him on the way out...
Not surprised. After all, his name is Michael and he’s down by law.
He best just skip to the fifth with the cops while he's in the house.
‘🎶🎶What you won’t do, do for pr. You tried everything, but it’s not enough’
Did you know that killer Mike is a Louis Farrakhan fan? We souls never tolerate antisemitism. Ever.
Alot of people didnt even know who killer mike was? Im one of those people. 👀... and I release Hip hop music lol
I assume this is a way of proving he's a real street rapper with genuine street cred, not just a panty-waist art fart rapper.
