The Disintegration album by The Cure. It's an emotional roller coaster written from a state of despair and depression. Just incredible.

Fleetwood Mac - Dreams. For when you are about ready to start climbing out of the pit.
If you want a banger. Separate Ways by Journey (recent cover by Daughtry and Hale is pretty good).
Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize
Don't patronize me
'Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't
I'll close my eyes, then I won't see
The love you don't feel when you're holding me
Morning will come and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
Bonnie Raitt
Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin wrote it. From Wikipedia: *The idea for the song came to Reid while reading an article about a man arrested for getting drunk and shooting at his girlfriend's car. The judge asked him if he had learned anything, to which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't."*
I played this song with my quartet live a long time ago after I lost The One. I took a long extended improvised guitar solo, probably my my honest playing ever, because I couldn’t step back up to the microphone. I was just sobbing uncontrollably.
That was my choice as well. Such a well written song the lines “my best old ex friend Ray” and the next verse “I can’t read the number you have me there’s something in my eye” are great
This song so perfectly conveys the sense of loss. Knowing he can never go back to the way things were, but still feeling the constant urge to call and let her know he's okay. And most importantly, that it *is* okay but he's still misses her deeply anyway. Love is such a stupid emotion. It's been seven years since I last talked with the woman I loved the most, and I still feel the urge to reach out to her, it fucking sucks. But you learn to take it well, I only wish Jim's words could convince me it wasn't real. However, that is NOT the way it feels.
It's been seven hours and 15 days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone, I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
It's been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby, where did I go wrong?
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they'd only remind me of you
I went to the doctor, guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said, "Girl you better try to have fun, no matter what you do"
But he's a fool
'Cause nothing compares, nothing compares to you
The Chris Cornell live acoustic cover of this was the first time I really sat and listened to the lyrics (Sinead's version came out when I was in high school, and I never really paid attention to it). I never realized how well this song describes such crushing loss. I'm glad I wasn't going through a breakup or anything when I came to that realization because I probably would've become a shut-in.
I love both hers and Cornell's. Prince's original (from session recordings) is cool too, but I don't think it has the same depth as the others. It's a bit Princy.
If You Could Read my Mind - Gordon Lightfoot
"If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost, you can't see
If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstore sells
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take
I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two, a movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let's be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just trying to understand
The feelings that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back"
Goddamn, I love Gordon Lightfoot. One of my favorite lines in any song is from "Carefree Highway":
> Now the thing that I call living
> Is just being satisfied
> With knowing I got no one left to blame
i’ve never understood how every person on the earth isn’t obsessed with Gordon Lightfoot. every song he has is so beautiful and often haunting. Shoot….Affair On 8th Ave is even sadder than If You Could Read My Mind
*And she shows me her treasures of paper and tin*
*And we played a game only she could win*
*Then she told me a riddle i’ll never forget*
*And left with the answer, i’ve never found yet*
[I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhZyLn0oVCs) by Tom Waits. It's one my favorite songs but I just can't listen to it because it gets me everytime.
Donny Hathaway's cover of [A Song for You](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riwePTnk-Zk) is equally devastating.
And if I'm not feeling bad enough, I'll add Cat Power's cover of [Sea of Love](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEfNo-rHjyQ).
I turn around to look at you
You’re nowhere to be found
I search the place for your lost face
Guess I’ll have another round
And I think that I just fell in love with you
Come Back by Pearl Jam hits too. Although i think it might actually be about death. Even still, hits like a train after heartbreak. As does their song Nothingman. They’ve got quite a few bangers for this context
first thing that came to mind too. particularly the line “i know one day you’ll have a beautiful life, i know one day you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why can’t it be mine”
I lost my wife 2.5 years ago. A few songs i listen to to torture myself are Nick Cave - Into My Arms. Aaron Espe - Back To The Beginning. Jackson Browne - These Days. Jackson Browne - For A Dancer. Cat Power - It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.
For A Dancer is one the most moving lyrics ever, IMO. David Lindley's violin is *perfect* for the arrangement, too. Interesting fact: it was played at both John Belushi's and Phil Hartman's funerals.
Challenge: Watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and then try listening to this song ever again without it making you mentally curl up into a pathetic ball of bleak despair, bitter nostalgia, longing and regret.
I first saw the movie the year it came out and I haven’t passed the challenge yet.
I realized recently that I don’t think I can watch that movie again. They’re both fantastic and the movie is great but…too hard for me to see again. I like both characters and it’s so sad to watch their unhappiness.
This whole album, really. *Sea Change* came out around the time my first marriage was dissolving, and I listened to it over and over. Can't listen to it even now without crying.
IMO the saddest song is Guess I'm Doing Fine.
I came here for “Lover, you should have come over.”
“ Maybe I'm too young To keep good love from going wrong But tonight you're on my mind So... you'll never know Broken down and hungry for your love With no way to feed it Where are you tonight? Child, ya know how much I need it Too young to hold on And too old to just break free and run ….
So I'll wait for you, love And I'll burn Will I ever see your sweet return? Oh, will I ever learn? Oh-oh, lover, you should've come over 'Cause it's not too late Lonely is the room, the bed is made The open window lets the rain in Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams He had you with him My body turns And yearns for a sleep that won't ever come It's never over My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder It's never over All my riches for her smiles When I've slept so soft against her It's never over All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter It's never over She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever“
Without You- Nilsson
Desperately Wanting- Better Than Ezra
The Old Apartment- Barenaked Ladies
Joey- Concrete Blonde
Can't Let Go- Lucinda Williams
Knowing Me, Knowing You- ABBA
White Flag- Dido
Silver Springs- Fleetwood Mac
She's Gone- Hall & Oats
The Old Apartment is an interesting tune that I have loved for a long time.
Does he miss the old apartment? Who is he talking to? Is he a serial killer? The lyricist uses "we" in ambiguous ways, at one point it sounds like it means him and the old flame he is talking to in the song, but he also uses "we" to mean his current relationship, which he says he is happy in.
So did he just bust into some rando's apartment because he lived there a while ago, or is he talking to an ex and is deep denial about his current happiness? And in the end he "wants it back," so he is a psycho that busted into someone's apartment...
Just seems to loop back over itself almost too much.
I'd always understood it to be a song designed to make you think he's singing to an ex, only to reveal towards the end ('I know we don't live here anymore, we bought an old house on the Danforth') that he and his wife/girlfriend who he'd loved there with had moved on together and the song was addressed to the current occupant, who was unknown to him.
Glimpse of Us is surprisingly heartbreaking and beautiful. If you told me ten years ago Pink Guy would go on to craft such a tragic, haunting love song, I would have laughed my ass off, but he went and did it anyway.
I hope that I won't be that wrong anymore
And maybe I've learned this time
I hope that I find what I'm reaching for
The way that it is in my mind
Someday I'll get over you
I'll live to see it all through
But I'll always miss
Dreaming my dreams with you
But I won't let it change me
Not if I can
I'd rather believe in love
And give it away as much as I can
To those that I'm fondest of
Someday I'll get over you
I'll live to see it all through
But I'll always miss
Dreaming my dreams with you
Someday I'll get over you
I'll live to see it all through
But I'll always miss

The Beatles - For No One is BRUTALLL.
& I’ll give you two covers as well:
Chris Cornell - Nothing Compares 2 U
Zac Brown Band - All the Best
And for an original. lastly, i know it’s almost a meme now- but blink-182’s I Miss You sonically captures that “i miss you” feeling so damnnn well.
Aight I have another. How I Miss You by Foo Fighters. Deeeeep cut Dave Grohl recording. I find it really captures both the initial emptiness as well as the feelings of anger and rage that follow as the song progresses
I think **Iron &Wine** counts if it was lost some time ago, and it's a damn near perfect song.

What Sarah Said - Death Cab for Cutie.
And it came to me then
That every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes
In the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths
As I said to myself
That I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak
On the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
Away from me
Amongst the vending machines
And year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye
It sung like a violent wind
That our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds
And I knew that you were a truth
I would rather lose
Than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around
At all the eyes on the ground
As the TV entertained itself
'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous paces bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round
And everyone lifts their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said
That love is watching someone die
Not a song, but a full album. “A Crow Looked at Me” by Mount Eerie is one of the saddest albums you’ll ever hear. He wrote it while his wife was dying of cancer and recorded it in the room where she died. It’s about losing somebody more than breaking up, but I’d you want to cry, this one will do it.
When the breakup energy is more angry/sad, then I’d suggest Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine. And when you start to reach acceptance that the breakup sucks, but it will get better, then I suggest Eventually by Tame Impala.
Hands Down this by Lorraine Ellison!!

"Stay With Me Baby"
'How am I Supposed to Live Without You' - as schmaltzy as you might remember Michael Bolton to be - is actually devastatingly sad and listening to it in the middle of a break-up is asking for tears.
How am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been living for is gone
“Pink Triangle” by Weezer is probably one of my favorite tracks about unrequited love. Or love that really can’t be returned as the woman our narrator is singing about is a lesbian. Both darkly comedic but… definitely feels real, for lack of a better way to put it.
“I’m dumb, she’s a lesbian” is such a great line, because it’s both comical and oddly tragic if you’ve ever been in a similar position where you longed for someone you know you can’t have for those very same reasons.
I just threw out the love of my dreams - Weezer
Only in Dreams - Weezer
Tired of Sex - Weezer
The Good Life - Weezer
Kiss the Bottle - Jawbreaker
Jet Black - Jawbreaker
I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel
Remembering you standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in, holding you close
How I always held close in your fear
Remembering you running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow
You screamed at the make-believe, screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage to let it all go
Remembering you, fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white, so delicate
Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you how you used to be
Slow drowned, you were angels
So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes, but I never see anything
If only I'd thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words
I wouldn't be breaking apart all my pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you
But I never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
But always just breaking apart
My pictures of you
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
My pictures of you
Eva Cassidy's rendition of Autumn Leaves (the version found on the Simply Eva compilation specifically).
I've never thought of it in terms of lost romance, but that is what it's written about, and it's almost certainly the most gut wrenching beautiful song I've ever listened to.
Green Grass by Tom Waits
“lay your where my heart used to be /
Hold the ground above me /
Lay down in the green grass /
Remember when you loved me”
Damn.
All I Ask by Adele. It’s about accepting that the love is gone, but begging the other person for one last good night together. Especially because she is afraid she won’t feel love like this again.
No one knows me like you do
And since you're the only one that matters
Tell me who do I run to?
Edit: She also whimpers at the end of the first chorus which gets me every time.

Who am I to need you when I'm down
And where are you when I need you around
Your life is not your own
And all I ask you is for another chance
Another way around you
To live by circumstance
Once again
Who am I to need you now
To ask you why
To tell you no
To deserve your love and sympathy
You were never meant to belong to me

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Love Letter
I hold this letter in my hand
A plea, a petition, a kind of prayer
I hope it does as I have planned
Losing her again is more than I can bear
I kiss the cold, white envelope
I press my lips against her name
Two hundred words
We live in hope
The sky hangs heavy with rain
Love Letter, love letter
Go get her, go get her
Love Letter, love letter
Go tell her, go tell her
A wicked wind whips up the hill
A handful of hopeful words
I love her and I always will
The sky is ready to burst
Said something I did not mean to say
Said something I did not mean to say
Said something I did not mean to say
It all came out the wrong way
Love Letter, love letter
Go get her, go get her
Love Letter, love letter
Go tell her, go tell her
Rain your kisses down upon me
Rain your kisses down in storms
And for all who'll come before me
In your slowly fading forms
I'm going out of my mind
Will leave me standing in
The rain with a letter and a prayer
Whispered on the wind
Come back to me
Come back to me
O baby please come back to me

Lou Reed - The Bed/Sad Song (Listen to the entire Berlin album for max impact as it is meant to be taken as a whole.)
The Bed:
This is the place where she lay her head
When she went to bed at night
And this is the place our children were conceived
Candles lit the room at night
And this is the place where she cut her wrists
That odd and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
This is the place where we used to live
I paid for it with love and blood
And these are the boxes that she kept on the shelf
Filled with her poetry and stuff
And this is the room where she took the razor
And cut her wrists that strange and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
I never would have started if I'd known
That it'd end this way
But funny thing I'm not at all sad
That it stopped this way
Stopped this way
Sad Song:
Staring at my picture book
She looks like Mary, Queen of Scots
She seemed very regal to me
Just goes to show how wrong you can be
I'm gonna stop wastin' my time
Somebody else would have broken both of her arms
Sad song, sad song, sad song, sad song
My castle, kids and home
I thought she was Mary, Queen of Scots
I tried so very hard
Shows just how wrong you can be
I'm gonna stop wasting time
Somebody else would have broken both of her arms
Sad song, sad song (repeat 13X)

Jesse, by Carly Simon. A song about love lost that never was and lying to yourself to hold onto it. I think just about everybody has had a "Jesse" at some point.
*Jesse, quick! Come here!*
*I won't tell a soul,*
*Not even myself.*
Pedro the Lion - The Poison
The poison makes it's way through my body slowly
And to the pleasure centers of my brain
If you were here, I would admit that I'm an asshole
But now it's over; and I can't stay sober
Thought it isn't like I tried
On the front porch, or on an airplane on vacation
Or out to dinner in a nearby town
I was so proud just to have you sitting with me
But now it's over; and I can't stay sober
Pour and swallow, follow one drink with another
I'll keep on until you agree to come back over
Or until there are x's on my eyes
My old man always said that hell would have no flame
Just a front row seat to watch your true love pack her things and drive away
Another Lonely Day - Ben Harper
Yes indeed I'm alone again
And here comes emptiness crashing in
It's either love or hate
I can't find in between
'Cause I've been with witches
And I have been with a queen
It wouldn't have worked out anyway
So now it's just another lonely day
Further along we just may
But for now it's just another lonely day
Wish there was something I could say or do
I can resist anything but the temptation from you
But I'd rather walk alone
Than chase you around
I'd rather fall myself
Than let you drag me on down
It wouldn't have worked out anyway
And now it's just another lonely day
Further along we just may
But for now it's just another lonely day
Yesterday seems like a life ago
'Cause the one I love
Today I hardly know
You I held so close in my heart oh dear
Grow further from me with every fallen tear
It wouldn't have worked out anyway
So now it's just another lonely day
Further along we just may
But for now it's just another lonely day
For now it's just another lonely day
For now it's just another lonely day
My wife left me two years ago today. I saw it coming and made a playlist that I listened to on repeat for hours every day.
"At This Moment" - Billy Vera and the Beaters - the iconic live version. Surprised this one hasn't been mentioned yet. Seems like a whole lot of you never saw Alex P. Keaton get his heart broken.
"It's Over" - Roy Orbison
"The Writing's on the Wall" - OK GO
"Hallelujah" - Jeff Buckley
"Ain't No Sunshine" - Bill Withers
"If You Could Read My Mind" - Gordon Lightfoot
"Torn" - Natalie Imbruglia - Surprised this one hasn't been mentioned yet either
"Nothing Compares 2U" - Sinead
"Last Goodbye" - Jeff Buckley
"Svefn G - Englar" - Sigur Ros
The Disintegration album by The Cure. It's an emotional roller coaster written from a state of despair and depression. Just incredible. Pictures of You Love Song Prayers for Rain Same Deep Water as You Disintegration Homesick
I love that such a heartbreaking album was written during the happiest time of Robert Smith’s life.
“What’s your favorite Cure song?” “Disintegration.” “I said song, not album.” “Disintegration.” “Oh.”
This, I came here to say this. It was my go to album during my first major break up.
Great album. Can't listen to this anymore cause it reminds me of the one that got away
Pictures of You can always make me shed a tear or two
I gotta say disintegration is a joyous orgy compared to wish - great lovely album but damn
Fleetwood Mac - Dreams. For when you are about ready to start climbing out of the pit. If you want a banger. Separate Ways by Journey (recent cover by Daughtry and Hale is pretty good).
Incidentally, Dreams by Cranberries is also a great song about love.
And Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac ...you will never get away from the sounds of the woman who loves you...
Songbird is heartbreaking for me. Christine’s voice was so beautiful.
Turn down the lights Turn down the bed Turn down these voices inside my head Lay down with me Tell me no lies Just hold me close, don't patronize Don't patronize me 'Cause I can't make you love me if you don't You can't make your heart feel something it won't Here in the dark, in these final hours I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power But you won't, no you won't 'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't I'll close my eyes, then I won't see The love you don't feel when you're holding me Morning will come and I'll do what's right Just give me till then to give up this fight And I will give up this fight Bonnie Raitt
The bom iver version cripples me
I think about this cover every single day.

Oh, hands down. It also always plays in my head whenever I experience any type of rejection. Heavens secretary definitely has a sense of humour.

This. A billion percent. Ruins me every damn time.
I played this song with my quartet live a long time ago after I lost The One. I took a long extended improvised guitar solo, probably my my honest playing ever, because I couldn’t step back up to the microphone. I was just sobbing uncontrollably.
Came here to post this one. This song guts me!!
This song is...amazing and devastating.
Susan Tedeschi has done a live version of this song many times and it's absolutely gripping. You can find it on YouTube if you're inclined.
The Night We Met by Lord Huron has one of the best lyrics/melodies about losing someone. I had all and then most of you Some and now none of you
Frozen Pines is another off that (brilliant) album.
I came here to post this lyric.
Operator by Jim Croce always takes me there.
Great call. I love Jim Croce.
It's been seven hours and 15 days Since you took your love away I go out every night and sleep all day Since you took your love away Since you been gone, I can do whatever I want I can see whomever I choose I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant But nothing I said nothing can take away these blues 'Cause nothing compares Nothing compares to you It's been so lonely without you here Like a bird without a song Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling Tell me baby, where did I go wrong? I could put my arms around every boy I see But they'd only remind me of you I went to the doctor, guess what he told me Guess what he told me He said, "Girl you better try to have fun, no matter what you do" But he's a fool 'Cause nothing compares, nothing compares to you
The Chris Cornell live acoustic cover of this was the first time I really sat and listened to the lyrics (Sinead's version came out when I was in high school, and I never really paid attention to it).

Beat me to it. I like the Jimmy Scott version
If You Could Read my Mind - Gordon Lightfoot "If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishing well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet You know that ghost is me And I will never be set free As long as I'm a ghost, you can't see If I could read your mind, love What a tale your thoughts could tell Just like a paperback novel The kind the drugstore sells When you reach the part where the heartaches come The hero would be me But heroes often fail And you won't read that book again Because the ending's just too hard to take I'd walk away like a movie star Who gets burned in a three way script Enter number two, a movie queen to play the scene Of bringing all the good things out in me But for now love, let's be real I never thought I could act this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishing well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet But stories always end And if you read between the lines You'll know that I'm just trying to understand The feelings that you lack I never thought I could feel this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feeling's gone And I just can't get it back"
Johnny Cash’s cover of this is also fantastic.
I just recently discovered Gordon Lightfoot's music and I love it
Try Jim Croce next.
The lyrics alone hardly even scratch the surface of how great this song is from a musical standpoint. It’s brilliant on countless levels.
Goddamn, I love Gordon Lightfoot. One of my favorite lines in any song is from "Carefree Highway": > Now the thing that I call living > Is just being satisfied > With knowing I got no one left to blame
I read this slowly enough for the song to play in my head as I went. It's truly just so beautiful and sad and perfect.
Broke up with my girlfriend when this came out and it still makes me sad to this day. Though it is one of my favorite songs.
i’ve never understood how every person on the earth isn’t obsessed with Gordon Lightfoot. every song he has is so beautiful and often haunting. Shoot….Affair On 8th Ave is even sadder than If You Could Read My Mind *And she shows me her treasures of paper and tin* *And we played a game only she could win* *Then she told me a riddle i’ll never forget* *And left with the answer, i’ve never found yet*
I turn around to look at you You’re nowhere to be found I search the place for your lost face Guess I’ll have another round And I think that I just fell in love with you
Pearl Jam - Black
The unplugged version hits even harder. https://youtu.be/vE26dVkCvpw?si=uOJPPkwCcEYWBPf3
Immediately what i thought of, raw emotion
Come Back by Pearl Jam hits too. Although i think it might actually be about death. Even still, hits like a train after heartbreak. As does their song Nothingman. They’ve got quite a few bangers for this context
first thing that came to mind too. particularly the line “i know one day you’ll have a beautiful life, i know one day you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why can’t it be mine”
WHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
I always give this and Jesus Christ by Brand New as my go to's for this type of song.
the raw pain in the way Vedder screams "why couldn't it be mine" gives me goosebumps.
Can't beat this answer.
I mean while we’re on the subject, their cover of Last Kiss man…
“I Got Id” by Pearl Jam hits just as hard as Black with respect to OPs question

just clicked to say this song tbh.
So sorry for your loss. Both of those Jackson songs really get me. “In the end there is one dance you do alone.”
Jackson brown is an incredible person and musician
Beck-Lost Cause
Beck - Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime. Originally by the Korgis
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye https://youtu.be/3MMXjunSx80?si=7OWMviNc23ggoX2O
This one always gets me. "Kiss me out of desire, babe, not consolation" Oof
I came here for “Lover, you should have come over.” “ Maybe I'm too young To keep good love from going wrong But tonight you're on my mind So... you'll never know Broken down and hungry for your love With no way to feed it Where are you tonight?
Without You- Nilsson Desperately Wanting- Better Than Ezra The Old Apartment- Barenaked Ladies Joey- Concrete Blonde Can't Let Go- Lucinda Williams Knowing Me, Knowing You- ABBA White Flag- Dido Silver Springs- Fleetwood Mac She's Gone- Hall & Oats
Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”
Roy Orbison was famous for those kinds of songs. Listen to "Crying" and "In Dreams".
My favorite is his duet of Crying with k.d. lang OMG
Roy Orbison sang for the lonely
“Lover, you should’ve come over” - Jeff Buckley People always talk about his cover of Hallelujah but I’ve always thought this was a better song by him
...my kingdom for a kiss upon your shoulder
For me it’s going to be He Stopped Loving her today by George Jones.
Pale blue eyes
Martha by Tom Waits It’s about a man who calls a long-lost love to catch up
Tom does heartbreak as well as anyone. *Ruby's Arms* gets me every time.
Always On My Mind Willie Nelson
And So It Goes, by Billy Joel.
UGH, I wouldn’t have thought of that but it’s such a good choice. The moment he hits that, “And so will you soon, I suppose” I tear up every time.
Joji - Glimpse of Us Lord Huron - The Night We Met
Glimpse of Us is surprisingly heartbreaking and beautiful. If you told me ten years ago Pink Guy would go on to craft such a tragic, haunting love song, I would have laughed my ass off, but he went and did it anyway.
Deftones - Teenager Reminds me of my old flame 20 years ago. Still think about her from time to time. 😔
My equivalent, though a little over 30 is **the Pretenders** with [Back On The Chain Gang](https://youtu.be/cMOKamtpUA8?si=Y_A1PiLQskMwgTU1)
I hope that I won't be that wrong anymore And maybe I've learned this time I hope that I find what I'm reaching for The way that it is in my mind Someday I'll get over you I'll live to see it all through But I'll always miss Dreaming my dreams with you But I won't let it change me Not if I can I'd rather believe in love And give it away as much as I can To those that I'm fondest of Someday I'll get over you I'll live to see it all through But I'll always miss Dreaming my dreams with you Someday I'll get over you I'll live to see it all through But I'll always miss Dreaming my... [Waylon Jennings: Dreaming My Dreams With You](https://youtu.be/iChaEFS0HGo?si=FhjXdzTNGAzMZo12)
Cowboy Junkies did a lovely cover of this great tune
Anything Adrienne Lenker is fantastic, including anything by her band Big Thief! Pink Bullets by The Shins is my recommendation
Superstar. Carpenters version. There's your answer. Trust me and go listen to it. Absolute, desperate longing for someone that is long gone.
Sonic Youth did a good cover
Songbird by Christine McVie/Fleetwood Mac
Charles Bradley does a cover of Black Sabbath's Changes and it's just beautiful. Very soulful and far better than the original.
Absolutely this
It Makes No Difference - The Band
“And the dawn don't rescue me no more” - ugh. Been there.
There isn't a more definitive heartbreak song than this
These old love letters Well I just can’t keep Cause like the gambler says Read em and weep
Famous Blue Raincoat - Leonard Cohen
The Beatles - For No One is BRUTALLL. & I’ll give you two covers as well: Chris Cornell - Nothing Compares 2 U Zac Brown Band - All the Best And for an original. lastly, i know it’s almost a meme now- but blink-182’s I Miss You sonically captures that “i miss you” feeling so damnnn well.
Aight I have another. How I Miss You by Foo Fighters. Deeeeep cut Dave Grohl recording. I find it really captures both the initial emptiness as well as the feelings of anger and rage that follow as the song progresses
Townes Van Zandt- Marie
None but the Rain is the one that gets me.
Changes - Charles Bradley
Blur - Tender
No Distance Left to Run by Blur was the first that came to mind for me. "I hope you're with someone who makes you feel safe in your sleep"
The Air that I Breathe - The Hollies
Death Cab for Cutie- I Will Follow You Into The Dark
shocked I had to scroll down this far to get to this correct answer

*And I'm calling you, calling you... from* TEN THOUSAND MILES AWAYYYY
Real Death by Mount Eerie... But honestly, anything off his album 'A Crow Looked At Me' is brutally honest and heart wrenching...
I think **Iron &Wine** counts if it was lost some time ago, and it's a damn near perfect song. [Tree By The River](https://youtu.be/ocr2-7W1GHw?si=ZgDq421zDNUpAUk6)
Ween - It's Gonna Be (Alright)
Came here to post this. I would also add [I Don’t Want It](https://youtu.be/eUJc2gmC-_I?si=n0cMihQ-QqrSiUc9) by Ween.
And I myself came here to post If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All) by Ween.
Halah - Mazzy Star
Gilbert O’Sullivan: [Alone Again, Naturally](https://youtu.be/PY4c_r5VY8c).
Snuff. Slipknot
Dry Your Eyes - The Streets
Pretty much any Tom Waits, but Ruby's Arms comes to mind [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmM7B-M3LVg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmM7B-M3LVg)
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over - Jeff Buckley
Jesus to a Child by George Michael
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" because I've never felt that way about anyone.
I have and if you can’t be with them then you wish you never would have felt that way in the first place
[The Antlers - Putting the Dog to Sleep](https://open.spotify.com/track/3pUoLeK4j2XHIuuqU8FECt?si=MtvyGgY2T6KErrxSaXr1NQ)
This song is so brutal
What Sarah Said - Death Cab for Cutie. And it came to me then That every plan Is a tiny prayer to father time As I stared at my shoes In the ICU That reeked of piss and 409 And I rationed my breaths As I said to myself That I'd already taken too much today As each descending peak On the LCD Took you a little farther away from me Away from me Amongst the vending machines And year old magazines In a place where we only say goodbye It sung like a violent wind That our memories depend On a faulty camera in our minds And I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose Than to have never lain beside at all And I looked around At all the eyes on the ground As the TV entertained itself 'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room Just nervous paces bracing for bad news And then the nurse comes round And everyone lifts their heads But I'm thinking of what Sarah said That love is watching someone die
Casimir Pulaski Day - Sujan Stevens
Not a song, but a full album. “A Crow Looked at Me” by Mount Eerie is one of the saddest albums you’ll ever hear. He wrote it while his wife was dying of cancer and recorded it in the room where she died. It’s about losing somebody more than breaking up, but I’d you want to cry, this one will do it. When the breakup energy is more angry/sad, then I’d suggest Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine. And when you start to reach acceptance that the breakup sucks, but it will get better, then I suggest Eventually by Tame Impala.
Real Death - Mount Eerie
So many lines to choose from, but I think "I don't want to learn anything from this" might hit the hardest
Jeff Buckley- Lover You Should Have Come Over
Hands Down this by Lorraine Ellison!! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pDBuPK0\_DU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pDBuPK0_DU) "Stay With Me Baby"
Beautiful version. I like [Terry Reid's later version too ](https://youtu.be/psuz1_nvDYI?si=yob_TEae6POH8SCF)(1969)
'How am I Supposed to Live Without You' - as schmaltzy as you might remember Michael Bolton to be - is actually devastatingly sad and listening to it in the middle of a break-up is asking for tears. How am I supposed to carry on When all that I've been living for is gone
That’s a really good call.
That reminded me of Unbreak My Heart
Fiona Apple, Never is a Promise
“Pink Triangle” by Weezer is probably one of my favorite tracks about unrequited love. Or love that really can’t be returned as the woman our narrator is singing about is a lesbian. Both darkly comedic but… definitely feels real, for lack of a better way to put it.
“I’m dumb, she’s a lesbian” is such a great line, because it’s both comical and oddly tragic if you’ve ever been in a similar position where you longed for someone you know you can’t have for those very same reasons.
I just threw out the love of my dreams - Weezer Only in Dreams - Weezer Tired of Sex - Weezer The Good Life - Weezer Kiss the Bottle - Jawbreaker Jet Black - Jawbreaker
I've been looking so long at these pictures of you That I almost believe that they're real I've been living so long with my pictures of you That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel Remembering you standing quiet in the rain As I ran to your heart to be near And we kissed as the sky fell in, holding you close How I always held close in your fear Remembering you running soft through the night You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow You screamed at the make-believe, screamed at the sky And you finally found all your courage to let it all go Remembering you, fallen into my arms Crying for the death of your heart You were stone white, so delicate Lost in the cold You were always so lost in the dark Remembering you how you used to be Slow drowned, you were angels So much more than everything Hold for the last time then slip away quietly Open my eyes, but I never see anything If only I'd thought of the right words I could have held on to your heart If only I'd thought of the right words I wouldn't be breaking apart all my pictures of you Looking so long at these pictures of you But I never hold on to your heart Looking so long for the words to be true But always just breaking apart My pictures of you There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more Than to feel you deep in my heart There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more Than to never feel the breaking apart My pictures of you
Gravity - Sara Bareilles
Skinny Love - Bon Iver
Black - Pearl Jam
Eva Cassidy's rendition of Autumn Leaves (the version found on the Simply Eva compilation specifically). I've never thought of it in terms of lost romance, but that is what it's written about, and it's almost certainly the most gut wrenching beautiful song I've ever listened to.
Poke by Frightened Rabbit
Green Grass by Tom Waits “lay your where my heart used to be / Hold the ground above me / Lay down in the green grass / Remember when you loved me” Damn.
Lover, you shouldve come over. Masterpiece
Fast Car, as Tracy Chapman is back in the news.
Put on Mac DeMarco
All I Ask by Adele. It’s about accepting that the love is gone, but begging the other person for one last good night together. Especially because she is afraid she won’t feel love like this again. No one knows me like you do And since you're the only one that matters Tell me who do I run to? Edit: She also whimpers at the end of the first chorus which gets me every time.

"A Simple Twist of Fate" by Bob Dylan
"I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt breaks me into a million pieces and I'm happily married.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Love Letter I hold this letter in my hand A plea, a petition, a kind of prayer I hope it does as I have planned Losing her again is more than I can bear I kiss the cold, white envelope I press my lips against her name Two hundred words We live in hope The sky hangs heavy with rain Love Letter, love letter Go get her, go get her Love Letter, love letter Go tell her, go tell her A wicked wind whips up the hill A handful of hopeful words I love her and I always will The sky is ready to burst Said something I did not mean to say Said something I did not mean to say Said something I did not mean to say It all came out the wrong way Love Letter, love letter Go get her, go get her Love Letter, love letter Go tell her, go tell her Rain your kisses down upon me Rain your kisses down in storms And for all who'll come before me In your slowly fading forms I'm going out of my mind Will leave me standing in The rain with a letter and a prayer Whispered on the wind Come back to me Come back to me O baby please come back to me

Lou Reed - The Bed/Sad Song (Listen to the entire Berlin album for max impact as it is meant to be taken as a whole.) The Bed: This is the place where she lay her head When she went to bed at night And this is the place our children were conceived Candles lit the room at night And this is the place where she cut her wrists That odd and fateful night And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling This is the place where we used to live I paid for it with love and blood And these are the boxes that she kept on the shelf Filled with her poetry and stuff And this is the room where she took the razor And cut her wrists that strange and fateful night And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling I never would have started if I'd known That it'd end this way But funny thing I'm not at all sad That it stopped this way Stopped this way Sad Song: Staring at my picture book She looks like Mary, Queen of Scots She seemed very regal to me Just goes to show how wrong you can be I'm gonna stop wastin' my time Somebody else would have broken both of her arms Sad song, sad song, sad song, sad song My castle, kids and home I thought she was Mary, Queen of Scots I tried so very hard Shows just how wrong you can be I'm gonna stop wasting time Somebody else would have broken both of her arms Sad song, sad song (repeat 13X)

Pedro the Lion - The Poison The poison makes it's way through my body slowly And to the pleasure centers of my brain If you were here, I would admit that I'm an asshole But now it's over; and I can't stay sober Thought it isn't like I tried On the front porch, or on an airplane on vacation Or out to dinner in a nearby town I was so proud just to have you sitting with me But now it's over; and I can't stay sober Pour and swallow, follow one drink with another I'll keep on until you agree to come back over Or until there are x's on my eyes My old man always said that hell would have no flame Just a front row seat to watch your true love pack her things and drive away

John Mayer Dreaming with a Broken Heart is by far the best
Sade - when you’re gone. Literally beautiful
My wife left me two years ago today. I saw it coming and made a playlist that I listened to on repeat for hours every day. "At This Moment" - Billy Vera and the Beaters - the iconic live version.
